We study the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(κ)$ generated by the Koopman representation $κ=κ^μ$ of a locally compact groupoid $G$ acting on a measure space $(X,μ)$, where $μ$ is quasi-invariant for the action. We interpret $κ$ as an induced representation and we prove that if the groupoid $G\ltimes X$ is amenable, then $κ$ is weakly contained in the regular representation $ρ=ρ^μ$ associated to $μ$, so we have a surjective homomorphism $C^*_r(G)\to C^*(κ)$. We consider the particular case of Renault-Deaconu groupoids $G= G(X,T)$ acting on their unit space $X$ and show that in some cases $C^*(κ)\cong C^*(G)$.

Investigation techniques based on tip-enhanced optical effects, capable to yield spatial resolutions down to nanometers level, have enabled a wide palette of important discoveries over the past twenty years. Recently, their underlying optical setups are beginning to emerge as useful tools to modify and manipulate matter with nanoscale spatial resolution. We try to contribute to these efforts by reporting a method that we found viable to modify the surface refractive index of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), an acrylic polymer material. The changes in the refractive index are accomplished by focusing a femtosecond pulsed near-infrared laser beam on the apex of a metalized nano-sized tip, traditionally used in scanning probe microscopy (SPM) applications. The adopted illumination strategy yields circular-shaped modifications of the refractive index occurring at the surface of the PMMA sample, exhibiting a lateral size <200 nm, under 790 nm illumination, representing a four-fold increase in precision compared to the current state-of-the-art. The light intensity enhancement effects taking place at the tip apex makes possible achieving refractive index changes at low laser pulse energies (<0.5 nJ), which represents two orders of magnitude advantage over the current state-of-the art. The presented nanoimprinting method is very flexible, as it can be used with different power levels and can potentially be operated with other materials. Besides enabling modifications of the refractive index with high lateral resolution, this method can pave the way towards other important applications such the fabrication of photonic crystal lattices or surface waveguides.

The current research regarding the Riemann zeros suggests the existence of a non-trivial algebraic/analytic structure on the set of Riemann zeros. The duality between primes and Riemann zeta function zeros suggests some new goals and aspects to be studied: {\em adelic duality} and the {\em POSet of prime numbers}.
The article presents computational evidence of the structure of the imaginary parts $t$ of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ρ=1/2+it$, called in this article the {\em Riemann Spectrum}, using the study of their distribution.
The novelty represents in considering the associated characters $p^{it}$, towards an algebraic point of view, than rather in the sense of Analytic Number Theory. This structure is tentatively interpreted in terms of adelic characters, and the duality of the rationals.
Second, the POSet structure of prime numbers studied, is tentatively mirrored via duality in the Riemann spectrum. A direct study of the convergence of their Fourier series, along Pratt trees, is proposed.
Further considerations, relating the Riemann Spectrum, adelic characters and distributions, in terms of Hecke idelic characters, local zeta integrals (Mellin transform) and $ω$-eigen-distributions, are explored following.

We analyse extensions $Σ$ of groupoids $G$ by bundles $A$ of abelian groups. We describe a pushout construction for such extensions, and use it to describe the extension group of a given groupoid $G$ by a given bundle $A$. There is a natural action of $Σ$ on the dual of $A$, yielding a corresponding transformation groupoid. The pushout of this transformation groupoid by the natural map from the fibre product of $A$ with its dual to the Cartesian product of the dual with the circle is a twist over the transformation groupoid resulting from the action of $G$ on the dual of $A$. We prove that the full $C^*$-algebra of this twist is isomorphic to the full $C^*$-algebra of $Σ$, and that this isomorphism descends to an isomorphism of reduced algebras. We give a number of examples and applications.

In this letter we report and investigate the temperature dependency of various radio frequency parameters (RF) for a fabricated reconfigurable bandstop filter with vanadium dioxide (VO2) switches measured up to 55 GHz. Here the insulator to metal (ITM) and metal to insulator transition (MIT) hysteresis of the VO2 thin film influence on the RF characteristics of the filters is analyzed from 25 °C and 120 °C in heating and cooling. The resonance frequency and maximum insertion loss (IL) stability and sensitivity with temperature variations are explored. It is noticed that increasing the temperature with 50 °C from 25 °C (or decreasing it with 50 °C from 120 °C) will result in a less than 1% fractional frequency shift in respect to the off and on resonance frequencies. The sharp DC conductivity levels variations of the VO2 thin film around the transition temperatures translate into sharp effects on the resonance characteristics of the filters. On the contrary, the maximum IL levels are less sensitive to the DC films sharp conductivity changes around the VO2 transition temperature. Last, we see that the RF parameters in heating and cooling at 80 °C, above (but close to) the DC transition temperatures of VO2 exhibit completely different resonance frequencies. The RF results reported close to the transition temperatures for the VO2 thin films can diverge in heating and cooling, thus of a more insightful understanding of VO2 reconfigurable RF devices has to include temperature dependent measurements at various temperatures below MIT and ITM in the RF ranges too

The article proves first that the constant quality factor (Q) contours for passive circuits, while represented on a 2D Smith chart, form circle arcs on a coaxal circle family. Furthermore, these circle arcs represent semi-circles families in the north hemisphere while represented on a 3D Smith chart. On the contrary we show that the constant Q contours for active circuits with negative resistance form complementary circle arcs on the same family of coaxal circles in the exterior of the 2D Smith chart. Also, we find out that these constant Q contours represent complementary semi-circles in the south hemisphere while represented on the 3D Smith chart for negative resistance circuits. The constant Q - computer aided design (CAD) implementation of the Q semi-circles on the 3D Smith chart is then successfully used to evaluate the quality factor variations of newly fabricated Vanadium dioxide inductors first, directly from their reflection coefficient, as the temperature is increased from room temperature to 50 degrees Celsius (°C). Thus, a direct multi-parameter frequency dependent analysis is proposed including Q, inductance and reflection coefficient for inductors. Then, quality factor direct analysis is used for two tunnel diode small signal equivalent circuits analysis, allowing for the first time the Q and input impedance direct analysis on Smith chart representation of a circuit, including negative resistance

In this paper, an analytical predictive model of the negative capacitance (NC) effect in symmetric long channel double-gate junctionless transistor is proposed based on a charge-based model. In particular, we have investigated the effect of the thickness of the ferroelectric on the I-V characteristics. Importantly, for the first time, our model predicts that the negative capacitance minimizes short channel effects and enhances current overdrive, enabling both low power operation and more efficient transistor size scaling, while the effect on reducing subthreshold slope shows systematic improvement, with subthermionic subthreshold slope values at high current levels (0.1 {\textmu}A/{\textmu}m). Our predictive results in a long channel junctionless with NC show an improvement in ON current by a factor of 6 in comparison to junctionless FET. The set of equations can be used as a basis to explore how such a technology booster and its scaling will impact the main figures of merit of the device in terms of power performances and gives a clear understanding of the device physics. The validity of the analytical model is confirmed by extensive comparisons with numerical TCAD simulations in all regions of operation, from deep depletion to accumulation and from linear to saturation.

Obtaining ISFETs with a steep slope transfer characteristics is extremely challenging. In this paper we combine the merits of traditional ISFETs with the performance boosts offered by the insertion of a Negative Capacitor in series with the Gate contact. In the proposed tests with NC PZT capacitors, we demonstrate experimentally a reduction of the SS by 44%, combined with a current efficiency improvement of more than two times. Recently, the field of Metal-Insulator-Transition (MIT) materials has emerged as an unconventional solution for novel energy efficient electronic functions, such as steep slope subthermionic switches, neuromorphic hardware, reconfigurable radiofrequency functions, new types of sensors, teraherz and optoelectronic devices. Designing radiofrequency (RF) electronic circuits with a MIT material like vanadium dioxide, VO2, requires the understanding of its physics and appropriate models and tools, with predictive capability over large range of frequency (1-100GHz). Here, we develop 3D Smith charts for devices and circuits having complex frequency dependences, like the ones resulting by the use of MIT materials. The novel foundation of a 3D Smith chart involves here the geometrical fundamental notions of oriented curvature and variable homothety in order to clarify first theoretical inconsistencies in Foster and Non Foster circuits, where the driving point impedances exhibit mixed clockwise and counter-clockwise frequency dependent paths on the Smith chart as frequency increases. We show here the unique visualization capability of a 3D Smith chart, which allows to quantify orientation over variable frequency. The new 3D Smith chart is applied as a 3D multi-parameter modelling and design environment for the complex case of Metal-Insulator-Transition (MIT) materials where their permittivity is dependent on the frequency. In this work, we apply 3D Smith charts to on Vanadium Dioxide (VO2) reconfigurable Peano inductors. We report fabricated inductors with record quality factors using VO2 phase transition to program multiple tuning states, operating in the range 4 GHz to 10 GHz. Finally, we fabricate new Peano curves filters used to extract the frequency-dependent dielectric constant of VO2 within 1 GHz-50 GHz for the accurate design of RF electronic applications with phase change materials

The duality between primes and Riemann zeros, expressed traditionally as the Riemann-Mangoldt exact equation, is further used to investigate from a statistical point of view, the correspondence between the POSet structure of prime numbers and this yet unknown structure of R-Spec.
Specifically, the statistical correlation coefficient $c(p,q)=<X_p,X_q>$ is computed, noting "resonances" at the generators $q$ of the symmetry group $Aut_{Ab}(F_p)$ of finite field $F_p$.
A program for further studying the Riemann zeros from a pro-algebraic point of view, is presented.

Boltzmann tyranny poses a fundamental limit to lowering the energy dissipation of conventional MOS devices, a minimum increase of the gate voltage, i.e. 60 mV, is required for a 10-fold increase in drain-to-source current at 300 K. Negative Capacitance (NC) in ferroelectric materials is proposed in order to address this physical limitation of CMOS technology. A polarization destabilization in ferroelectrics causes an effective negative permittivity, resulting in a differential voltage amplification and a reduced subthreshold swing when integrated into the gate stack of a transistor. Recent demonstrations of negative capacitance concerned mainly n-type MOSFETs and their subthreshold slope. An effective technology booster should be capable of improving the performance of both n- and p-type transistors. In this work, we report a significant enhancement in both digital (subthreshold swing, on-current over off-current ratio, and overdrive) and analog (transconductance and current efficiency factor) FoM of commercial 28nm CMOS process by exploiting a PZT capacitor as the negative capacitance booster. Accordingly, a sub-thermal swing down to 10 mV/decade together with an enhanced current efficiency factor up to 10$^5$ V$^{-1}$ is obtained in both n- and p-type MOSFETs at room temperature. The overdrive voltage is enhanced up to 0.45 V, leading to a supply voltage reduction of 50\%.

In the THz range, graphene displays strong Faraday rotation; unfortunately, it is limited to frequencies below the cyclotron resonance. Here we show experimentally that in specifically design metasurfaces, magneto-plasmons can be used to circumvent this limitation. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment and provide new physical insights and predictions on these phenomena. Finally, we demonstrate strong tuneability in these metasurfaces using electric and magnetic field biasing.

We apply our results to a groupoid determined by a locally finite cover of a space $X$ and a cocycle provided by a Čech 1-cocycle with coefficients in the sheaf of germs of continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued functions. We prove that the $C^*$-algebra of the resulting twist is continuous trace and we compute its Dixmier-Douady invariant.

We study the $C^*$-algebras associated to upper-semicontinuous Fell bundles over second-countable Hausdorff groupoids. Based on ideas going back to the Packer--Raeburn "Stabilization Trick," we construct from each such bundle a groupoid dynamical system whose associated Fell bundle is equivalent to the original bundle. The upshot is that the full and reduced $C^*$-algebras of any saturated upper-semicontinuous Fell bundle are stably isomorphic to the full and reduced crossed products of an associated dynamical system. We apply our results to describe the lattice of ideals of the $C^*$-algebra of a continuous Fell-bundle by applying Renault's results about the ideals of the $C^*$-algebras of groupoid crossed products. In particular, we discuss simplicity of the Fell-bundle $C^*$-algebra of a bundle over $G$ in terms of an action, described by the first and last named authors, of $G$ on the primitive-ideal space of the $C^*$-algebra of the part of the bundle sitting over the unit space. We finish with some applications to twisted $k$-graph algebras, where the components of our results become more concrete.

A natural partial order on the set of prime numbers was derived by the author from the internal symmetries of the primary finite fields, independently of Ford a.a., who investigated Pratt trees for primality tests.

The gate-controllable complex conductivity of graphene offers unprecedented opportunities for reconfigurable plasmonics at THz and mid-IR frequencies. However, the requirement of a gating electrode close to graphene and the single `control knob' that this approach offers for graphene conductivity limits the practical implementation and performance of graphene-controllable plasmonic devices. Herein, we report on graphene stacks composed of two or more graphene monolayers separated by electrically thin dielectrics and present a simple and rigorous theoretical framework for their characterization. In a first implementation, two graphene layers gate each other, thereby behaving as a controllable single equivalent layer but without any additional gating structure. Second, we show that adding an additional gate --a third graphene layer or an external gate-- allows independent control of the complex conductivity of each layer within the stack and hence provides enhanced control on the stack equivalent complex conductivity. The proposed concepts are first theoretically studied and then demonstrated experimentally via a detailed procedure allowing extraction of the parameters of each layer independently and for arbitrary pre-do**. These results are believed to be instrumental to the development of THz and mid-IR plasmonic devices with enhanced performance and reconfiguration capabilities.

In this work, we report the simulation of C4+ irradiation and its significant effects towards the enhancement of the critical current density in BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals. BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals with and without the C-implantation were characterized by magneto-transport and magnetic measurements up to 13 T over a wide range of temperatures below and above the superconducting critical temperature, Tc. It is found that the C-implantation causes little change in Tc, but it can greatly enhance the in-field critical current density by a factor of up to 1.5 with enhanced flux jum** at 2 K. Our Monte Carlo simulation results show that all the C ions end up in a well defined layer, causing extended defects and vacancies at the layer, but few defects elsewhere on the implantation paths. This type of defect distribution is distinct from the columnar defects produced by heavy ion implantation. Furthermore, the normal state resistivity is enhanced by the light C4+ irradiation, while the upper critical field, Hc2, the irreversibility field, Hirr, and Tc were affected very little.

Using the sub-Gaussian estimates of the heat operator we prove that our operators have kernels that decay and, in the constant coefficient case, are smooth off the diagonal. Our analysis can be extended to product of fractals. While our results are applicable to a larger class of metric measure spaces with Laplacian, we use them to study elliptic, hypoelliptic, and quasi-elliptic operators on p.c.f. fractals, answering a few open questions posed in a series of recent papers. We extend our class of operators to include the so called Hörmander hypoelliptic operators and we initiate the study of wavefront sets and microlocal analysis on p.c.f. fractals.

This result relates Fredholm modules and topology, and refines and improves known results on p.c.f. fractals. We also discuss weakly summable Fredholm modules and the Dixmier trace in the cases of some finitely and infinitely ramified fractals (including non-self-similar fractals) if the so-called spectral dimension is less than 2. In the finitely ramified self-similar case we relate the p-summability question with estimates of the Lyapunov exponents for harmonic functions and the behavior of the pressure function.

This new class of nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) combines the unique mechanical and electronic properties of SWNTs with an integrated siliconbased motion detection. Its electrical response exhibits a clear signature of the mechanical resonance of SWNTs arrays (120-150 MHz) showing that these thin horizontal arrays behave as a cohesive, rigid and elastic body membrane with a Young modulus in the order of 1-10 GPa and ultra-low mass. Is "Gravity" a deformation of "Electromagnetism"? Deformation theory suggests quantizing Special Relativity: formulate Quantum Information Dynamics $SL(2,C)_h$-gauge theory of dynamical lattices, with unifying gauge ``group'' the quantum bundle obtained from the Hopf monopole bundle underlying the quaternionic algebra and Dirac-Weyl spinors. The deformation parameter is the inverse of light speed 1/c, in duality with Planck's constant h. Then mass and electric charge form a complex coupling constant (m,q), for which the quantum determinant of the quantum group $SL(2,C)_h$ expresses the interaction strength as a linking number 2-form. There is room for both Coulomb constant $k_C$ and Newton's gravitational constant $G_N$, exponentially weaker then the reciprocal of the fine structure constant $α$. Thus "Gravity" emerges already "quantum", in the discrete framework of QID, based on the quantized complex harmonic oscillator: the quantized qubit. All looks promising, but will the details backup this "grand design scheme"?

The generalized Effros-Hahn conjecture for groupoid C*-algebras says that, if G is amenable, then every primitive ideal of the groupoid C*-algebra C*(G) is induced from a stability group. We prove that the conjecture is valid for all second countable amenable locally compact Hausdorff groupoids. Our results are a sharpening of previous work of Jean Renault and depend significantly on his results…

A simple and fast process for micro-electromechanical (MEM) resonators with deep sub-micron transduction gaps in thin SOI is presented in this paper. Thin SOI wafers are important for advanced CMOS technology and thus are evaluated as resonator substrates for future co-integration with CMOS circuitry on a single chip. As the transduction capacitance scales with the resonator thickness, it is important to fabricate deep sub-micron trenches in order to achieve a good capacitive coupling. Through the combination of conventional UV-lithography and focused ion beam (FIB) milling the process needs only two lithography steps, enabling therefore a way for fast prototy** of MEM-resonators. Different FIB parameters and etching parameters are compared in this paper and their effect on the process are reported.
