Sharp Inequalities of Bienaymé-Chebyshev and GaußType for Possibly Asymmetric Intervals around the Mean
Abstract: Gauß(1823) proved a sharp upper bound on the probability that a random variable falls outside a symmetric interval around zero when its distribution is unimodal with mode at zero. For the class of all distributions with mean at zero, Bienaymé (1853) and Chebyshev (1867) independently provided another, simpler sharp upper bound on this probability. For the same class of distributions, Cantelli (192… ▽ More

Study of the behaviour of proliferating cells in leukemia modelled by a system of delay differential equations
Abstract: For the model of periodic chronic myelogenous leukemia considered by Pujo-Menjouet, Mackey et al., model consisting of two delay differential equations, the equation for the density of so-called "resting cells" was studied from numerical and qualitative point of view in several works. In this paper we focus on the equation for the density of proliferating cells and study it from a qualitative poin… ▽ More

Abstract: Some errors contained in the author's previous article "An example of Bautin-type bifurcation in a delay differential equation", JMAA, 329(2007), 777-789, are listed and corrected. Original abstract: In a previous paper we gave sufficient conditions for a system of delay differential equations to present Bautin-type bifurcation. On the computation of the third order terms of the series defining the center manifold for systems of delay differential equation
Abstract: When studying a general system of delay differential equation with a single constant delay, we encounter a certain lack of uniqueness in determining the coefficient of one of the third order terms of the series defining the center manifold. We solve this problem by considering a perturbation of the considered problem, perturbation that allows us to remove the singularity. The result generalizes a… ▽ More

Numerical investigation of the Bautin bifurcation in a delay differential equation modeling leukemia
Abstract: In a previous work we investigated the existence of Hopf degenerate bifurcation points for a differential delay equation modeling leukemia and we actually found Hopf points of codimension two for the considered problem. If around the parameters corresponding to such a point we vary two parameters (the considered problem has five parameters), then a Bautin bifurcation should occur. In this work we… ▽ More

Hopf points of codimension two in a delay differential equation modeling leukemia
Abstract: This paper continues the work contained in two previous papers, devoted to the study of the dynamical system generated by a delay differential equation that models leukemia. Here our aim is to identify degenerate Hopf bifurcation points. By using an approximation of the center manifold, we compute the first Lyapunov coefficient for Hopf bifurcation points. We find by direct computation, in some zo… ▽ More

Structural results on convexity relative to cost functions
Abstract: Mass transportation problems appear in various areas of mathematics, their solutions involving cost convex potentials. Fenchel duality also represents an important concept for a wide variety of optimization problems, both from the theoretical and the computational viewpoints. We drew a parallel to the classical theory of convex functions by investigating the cost convexity and its connections with… ▽ More

On the Bautin bifurcation for systems of delay differential equations
Abstract: For systems of delay differential equations the Hopf bifurcation was investigated by several authors. The problem we consider here is that of the possibility of emergence of a codimension two bifurcation, namely the Bautin bifurcation, for some of such systems.

On the computation of the term $w_{21}z^2\bar{z}$ of the series defining the center manifold for a scalar delay differential equation
Abstract: In computing the third order terms of the series of powers of the center manifold at an equilibrium point of a scalar delay differential equation, with a single constant delay $r>0,$ some problems occur at the term $w_{21}z^2\bar{z}.$ More precisely, in order to determine the values at 0, respectively $-r$ of the function $w_{21}(\,.\,),$ an algebraic system of equations must be solved. We show th… ▽ More

Invariant Representative Cocycles of Cohomology Generators using Irregular Graph Pyramids
Abstract: Structural pattern recognition describes and classifies data based on the relationships of features and parts. Topological invariants, like the Euler number, characterize the structure of objects of any dimension. Cohomology can provide more refined algebraic invariants to a topological space than does homology. It assigns `quantities' to the chains used in homology to characterize holes of any di… ▽ More

Image Segmentation by Discounted Cumulative Ranking on Maximal Cliques
Abstract: We propose a mid-level image segmentation framework that combines multiple figure-ground hypothesis (FG) constrained at different locations and scales, into interpretations that tile the entire image. The problem is cast as optimization over sets of maximal cliques sampled from the graph connecting non-overlap**, putative figure-ground segment hypotheses. Potential functions over cliques combine… ▽ More

Stability of equilibrium and periodic solutions of a delay equation modeling leukemia
Abstract: We consider a delay differential equation that occurs in the study of chronic myelogenous leukemia. After shortly reminding some previous results concerning the stability of equilibrium solutions, we concentrate on the study of stability of periodic solutions emerged by Hopf bifurcation from a certain equilibrium point. We give the algorithm for approximating a center manifold at a typical point… ▽ More

New results concerning the stability of equilibria of a delay differential equation modeling leukemia
Abstract: The paper is devoted to the study of stability of equilibrium solutions of a delay differential equation that models leukemia. The equation was previously studied in [5] and [6], where the emphasis is put on the numerical study of periodic solutions. Some stability results for the equilibria are also presented in these works, but they are incomplete and contain some errors. Our work aims to comp… ▽ More

A new modified Galerkin method for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations
Abstract: We present a new type of modified Galerkin method. It is a construction with several (inductively defined) levels, that provides approximate solutions of increasing accuracy with every new level.
