Varying gauge couplings and collider phenomenology
Abstract: In this paper we investigate a natural extension of the Standard Model that involves varying coupling constants. This is a general expectation in any fundamental theory such as string theory, and there are good reasons for why new physics could appear at reachable energy scales. We investigate the collider phenomenology of models with varying gauge couplings where the variations are associated wit… ▽ More

Towards solving the proton spin puzzle

Nucleon parton distributions from hadronic quantum fluctuations

The hadronic fluctuations, here developed in terms of hadronic chiral perturbation theory, occur with high probability and generate sea quarks as well as dynami… ▽ More

Minimal anomalous $\mathrm{U}(1)$ theories and collider phenomenology
Abstract: We study the collider phenomenology of a neutral gauge boson $Z'$ arising in minimal but anomalous $\mathrm{U}(1)$ extensions of the Standard Model (SM). Hard color singlet BFKL exchange and gaps between jets at the LHC
Abstract: We explore the perturbative QCD dynamics of hard parton-parton scattering through the exchange of a color singlet two-gluon ladder as described by the BFKL equation, resulting in a rapidity gap between two high transverse momentum jets. Implementing this in a complete Monte Carlo event simulation that also accounts for additional QCD processes at softer scales provides dynamical modeling of gap su… ▽ More

The 750 GeV excess from photon-photon and quark-quark processes
Abstract: The observed excess in the diphoton mass spectrum around 750 GeV at the 13 TeV LHC possibly indicates the presence of a photonphilic resonance. We show that the excess can be explained by a scalar of the type involved in Bekenstein's framework for varying electromagnetic coupling theories. The scalar, in our model, couples dominantly to photons and is mainly produced by the quark-quark fusion at t… ▽ More

Differences of up to an order of magnitude occurs, although the different models all describe the Tevatron data on high-pT charmonium. An important point is here the treatment of higher order perturbative QCD effects. We also discuss the… ▽ More

Soft and hard QCD dynamics in hadroproduction of charmonium
Abstract: Both hard and soft QCD dynamics are important in charmonium production, as presented here through a next-to-leading order QCD matrix element calculation combined with the colour evaporation model. Observed $x_F$ and $p_\perp$ distributions of $J/ψ$ in hadroproduction at fixed target and $p\bar{p}$ collider energies are reproduced. Quite similar results can also be obtained in a more phenomenolog… ▽ More

Soft Colour Interactions and Diffractive Hard Scattering at the Tevatron
Abstract: We make a brief presentation of the soft colour interactions models, the Soft Colour Interaction and the Generalised Area Law, and summarise the results when they are applied to p-pbar scattering. The models give a good description of the Tevatron data on production of W, bottom and jets in diffractive events, as well as jets with two rapidity gaps, alternatively leading particles. We also give… ▽ More

Hard colour singlet exchange and gaps between jets at the Tevatron
Abstract: The new kind of events with a rapidity gap between two high-E_T jets, observed in high energy ppbar collisions at the Tevatron, is found to be well described by the exchange of a colour singlet gluon system in the BFKL framework. This requires going beyond the conventional asymptotic Mueller-Tang approximation, which results in qualitatively different features of the basic parton-parton scatteri… ▽ More

Hard colour singlet exchange at the Tevatron from the BFKL equation
Abstract: We study rapidity gaps between jets in ppbar collisions at the Tevatron by a novel solution of the nonforward BFKL equation including nonleading effects through the consistency constraint and running coupling. Results differ from earlier calculations based on the asymptotic Mueller-Tang formula, but agree with D0 data when including full event simulation using PYTHIA to model the gap survival pr… ▽ More

Soft Color Interactions and Diffractive Hard Scattering at the Fermilab Tevatron
Abstract: An improved understanding of nonperturbative QCD can be obtained by the recently developed soft color interaction models. Their essence is the variation of color string-field topologies, giving a unified description of final states in high energy interactions, e.g., diffractive and nondiffractive events in ep and ppbar. Here we present a detailed study of such models (the soft color interaction… ▽ More

Hard and soft QCD in charmonium production
Abstract: We show that both hard perturbative and soft non-perturbative QCD effects are important in hadroproduction of charmonium. Observed $x_F$ and $p_\perp$ distributions of J/psi in fixed target experiments can be well described by our Monte Carlo model based on perturbative QCD and the Color Evaporation Model.

Soft remnant interactions and rapidity gaps
Abstract: Soft colour exchange models give a unified description of both diffractive and non-diffractive events, such that e-p and p-pbar collider data with and without rapidity gaps are well reproduced. We show that these models also describe the new Tevatron data on diffraction based on observed leading antiprotons, which provide new information on how to treat the beam particle remnant in the Monte Car… ▽ More

Rapidity gaps at HERA and the Tevatron from soft colour exchanges
Abstract: Models based on soft colour exchanges to rearrange colour strings in the final state provide a general framework for both diffractive and non-diffractive events in ep and hadron-hadron collisions. We study two such models and find that they can reproduce rapidity gap data from both HERA and the Tevatron. We also discuss the influence of parton cascades and multiple interactions on the results.
