We present proof-of-principle experiments of stroboscopic time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction in long pulsed magnetic fields. By utilizing electric double-layer capacitors, we developed a long pulsed magnet for neutron diffraction measurements, which generates pulsed magnetic fields with the full widths at the half maximum of more than $10^2$ ms. The field variation is slow enough to be approximated as a steady field within the time scale of a polychromatic neutron pulse passing through a sample placed in a distance of the order of $10^1$ m from the neutron source. This enables us to efficiently explore the reciprocal space using a wide range of neutron wavelength in high magnetic fields. We applied this technique to investigate field-induced magnetic phases in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_2$ ($x=0, 0.035$).

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on a superconducting single crystal FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ to examine the ${\bf Q}$-dependent enhancement of the dynamical structure factor, $S({\bf Q},E)$, from ${\bf Q}$ = (0, 0) to ($π$, $π$), including ($π$, 0) in the superconducting state. In most of iron-based superconductors, $S({\bf Q},E)$ is enhanced at ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0), where the "magnetic resonance mode" is commonly observed in the unfolded Brillouin zone. Constant-$E$ cuts of $S({\bf Q},E)$ suggest that the enhancement is not uniform in the magnetic excitation, and limited around ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0). This result is consistent with the theoretical simulation of the magnetic resonance mode due to the Bardeen$-$Cooper$-$Schrieffer coherence factor with the sign-reversing order parameter of s$_{\pm}$ wave.

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

We investigated the low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by the high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. We observed a spin resonance with energy of $\hbarω_\text{res}=0.56$~meV centered at a characteristic wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_\text{res}=(0.3, 0.3, 0.5)$. The resonance energy corresponds well to the superconducting gap $2Δ=0.56$~meV estimated by the tunneling spectroscopy. The spin resonance shows the $L$ modulation with a maximum at around $L = 0.5$. The $L$ modulated intensity of the spin resonance and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the quasi-one-dimensional $α$ and $β$ sheets at the Fermi surfaces have the horizontal line nodes. These results may set a strong constraint on the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We also discuss the implications on possible superconducting order parameters.

Magnetic excitations and magnetic structure of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), neutron diffraction, and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below the superconducting transition temperature $T_\text{c}=36.5$~K, the INS spectra exhibit the neutron spin resonances at $Q_\text{res}=1.27(2)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$ and $1.79(3)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$. They correspond to the $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5,0.5,1)$ and $(0.5,0.5,3)$ nesting wave vectors, showing three dimensional nature of the band structure. The characteristic energy of the neutron spin resonance is $E_\text{res}=17.7(3)$~meV corresponding to $5.7(1)k_\text{B}T_\text{c}$. Observation of the neutron spin resonance mode and our RPA calculations in conjunction with the recent optical conductivity measurements are indicative of the $s_\pm$ superconducting pairing symmetry in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. In addition to the neutron spin resonance mode, upon decreasing temperature below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\text{N}=15$~K, the spin wave excitation originating in the long-range magnetic order of the Eu sublattice was observed in the low-energy inelastic channel. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice is $\mathbf{k}=(0, 0, 0.25)$, representing the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. Linear spin wave calculations assuming the obtained magnetic structure with the intra- and inter-plane nearest neighbor exchange couplings of $J_1/k_\text{B}=-1.31$~K and $J_c/k_\text{B}=0.08$~K can reproduce quantitatively the observed spin wave excitation. Our results show that superconductivity and long-range magnetic order of Eu coexist in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ whereas the coupling between them is rather weak.

Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

Molecular based spin-1/2 triangular lattice systems such as LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ have attracted research interest. Distortions, defects, and intersite disorder are suppressed in such molecular-based magnets, and intrinsic geometrical frustration gives rise to unconventional and unexpected ground states. Li$_2$$A$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($A$ = In or Sc) is such a compound where spin-1/2 Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ clusters in place of Mo ions form the uniform triangular lattice. Their ground states are different according to the $A$ site. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes conventional $120^\circ$ long-range magnetic order below $T_\text{N}=12$~K whereas isomorphic Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits no long-range magnetic order down to 0.5~K. Here, we report exotic magnetisms in Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ investigated by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopies using polycrystalline samples. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ show completely different behaviors observed in both $μ$SR and INS measurements, representing their different ground states. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits spin wave excitation which is quantitatively described by the nearest neighbor anisotropic Heisenberg model based on the $120^\circ$ spin structure. In contrast, Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes short-range magnetic order below 4~K with quantum-spin-liquid-like magnetic fluctuations down to the base temperature. Origin of the different ground states is discussed in terms of anisotropies of crystal structures and magnetic interactions.

Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. The magnetic structure and spin-wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$ were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the $ab$ plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c$ axis where the magnetic propagation vector is $\mathbf{k}=\left(0,0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$. The ordered magnetic moments are estimated to be $0.54(2)μ_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{5+}$ ($4d^1$) ions and $1.07(3)μ_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{4+}$ ($4d^2$) ions at 4 K, which are about half of the expected values. The inelastic neutron scattering results display strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy along the $c$ axis due to the spin-orbit interaction in Mo ions evidenced by the spin gap at the magnetic zone center. The model Hamiltonian consisting of in-plane anisotropic exchange interactions, the interlayer exchange interaction, and easy-axis single-ion anisotropy can explain our inelastic neutron scattering data well. Strong Ising-like anisotropy and weak interlayer coupling compared with the intralayer exchange interaction can explain both the high-temperature magnetoresistance and long-time magnetization decay recently observed in La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$.

The nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The refined nuclear structure is distorted to a trigonal space group of $R\bar{3}$. The highest-energy dispersion extends up to 86 meV. The observed dispersions are reproduced by a simple model with three nearest-neighbor-exchange integrals between 16$a$ (octahedral) and 24$d$ (tetrahedral) sites, $J_{aa}$, $J_{ad}$, and $J_{dd}$, which are estimated to be 0.00$\pm$0.05, $-$2.90$\pm$0.07, and $-$0.35$\pm$0.08 meV, respectively. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $q$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $χ$"($E$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $χ$"($E$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single polarization mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

On the other hand, in Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$CrO$_{2}$ and CuCr$_{0.85}$Al$_{0.15}$O$_{2}$ the flat components are much reduced, the low-energy parts of the excitation spectra become intense, and additional low-energy diffusive spin fluctuations are induced. We argued the origins of these changes in the magnetic excitations are ascribed to effects of the doped holes or change of the dimensionality in the magnetic correlations.

Abstract:
By performing time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on a large amount of single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we studied detailed structure of the imaginary part of the dynamic spin susceptibility over a wide range of phase space. In the normal state at T=5 K, strong incommensurate (IC) peaks were clearly observed at around $\mathbf{Q}_\text{c}=(0.3,0.3)$ up to at least $\hbarω=80$ meV. In a…

In addition, our data also show strong magnetic fluctuations that exist on the ridges connecting the IC peaks around the $(π,π)$ point rather than around the $Γ$ point. Our results are consistent with the semi-mean-field random phase approximation calculation for a two dimensional Fermi liquid with a characteristic energy of 5.0 meV. Furthermore, the IC fluctuations were observed even at room temperature.

Abstract:
We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2Å^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electr…

The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation.

We report the results of the X-ray diffraction study of B2O3 glass in the pressure interval up to 10 GPa in the 300-700 K temperature range, the results of in-situ volumetric measurements of the glass at pressures up to 9 GPa at room temperature, and first-principles simulations data at pressures up to 250GPa. The behavior of B2O3 glass under pressure can be described as two broad pressure-overlap** transitions. The first transition starts at P > 1 GPa and proceeds without any changes in thecoordination number of the boron atoms; the other one starts at P > 5 GPa and is accompanied by a gradual increase of coordination number. The second transition is completely reversible; the residual densification of the B2O3 glass after decompression is associated with the incomplete reversibility of the first transformation. The fraction of boron atoms transferred to the 4-coordination state in the glass at P < 10 GPa is much smaller than was assumed from indirect experimental data [4], but is considerably larger (by tens of times) than was previously suggested by the classical molecular dynamics simulations [5,6]. The observed transformations under both compression and decompression are quite broad, contrary to the assumption in Ref. [7]. On the basis of ab-initio results, we also predict the one more transformation under higher pressures to a super-dense phase, in which B atoms become 5- and 6-fold coordinated.

Inelastic neutron scattering data from a twinned single-crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.95 are presented that show a distinct a-b plane anisotropy in the oxygen vibrations. The Cu-O bond-stretching type phonons are simultaneously observed along the a and b directions due to a 4 meV splitting arising from the orthorhombicity. The present results show the bond-stretching branch along b (parallel to the chain) has a continuous dispersion, while the branch along a is discontinuous, suggesting a possibility of short-range cell-doubling along a. Furthermore, the LO mode along a is split in en-ergy from its TO partner at non-zero q-vectors, while the b mode is not. These results imply strong anisotropy in the electronic screening and a one-dimensional character in underlying charge fluctuations.
