We investigated the optical properties of single crystals of one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, which shows high thermoelectric performance below room temperature. Optical conductivity estimated from reflectivity spectra indicates the presence of a small energy gap of 0.1-0.15 eV at the Fermi energy. At the lowest energy, optical conductivity along the Ta4SiTe4 chain is an order of magnitude higher than that perpendicular to this direction, reflecting the anisotropic electron conduction in Ta4SiTe4. These results indicate that coexistence of a very small band gap and anisotropic electron conduction is a promising strategy to develop a high-performance thermoelectric material for low temperature applications.

The aging world population requires a sustainable and high-quality healthcare system. To examine the efficiency of medical cooperation, medical provider and physician networks were constructed using patient claims data. Previous studies have shown that these networks contain information on medical cooperation. However, the usage patterns of multiple medical providers in a series of medical services have not been considered. In addition, these studies used only general network features to represent medical cooperation, but their expressive ability was low. To overcome these limitations, we analyzed the medical provider network to examine its overall contribution to the quality of healthcare provided by cooperation between medical providers in a series of medical services. This study focused on: i) the method of feature extraction from the network, ii) incorporation of the usage pattern of medical providers, and iii) expressive ability of the statistical model. Femoral neck fractures were selected as the target disease. To build the medical provider networks, we analyzed the patient claims data from a single prefecture in Japan between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019. We considered four types of models: a model using node strength and linear regression to a model using feature representation by node2vec and regression tree ensemble, which is a machine learning method. The results showed that a stronger medical provider reduces the duration of hospital stay. The overall contribution of the medical cooperation to the duration of hospital stay extracted from the medical provider network using node2vec is approximately 20%, which is approximately 20 times higher than the model using strength.

Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital order caused by the distortion of WO6 octahedra, and the formation of a spin-singlet pair in a regular-triangle trimer. Electronic instability due to the unusual three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces and the localized nature of the 5d electrons characteristic of the pyrochlore oxides were found to play important roles in this unique charge-orbital-spin coupled phenomenon.

We have performed dielectric measurements and neutron diffraction experiments on the double perovskite In2NiMnO6. A ferroelectric polarization, P ~ 30 μC/m2, is observed in a polycrystalline sample below TN = 26 K where a magnetic phase ransition occurs. The neutron diffraction experiment demonstrates that a complex noncollinear magnetic structure with "cycloidal" and "proper screw" components appears below TN, which has the incommensurate propagation vector k = (ka,0,ks; ka ~ 0.274, ks ~ -0.0893). The established magnetic point group 21' implies that the macroscopic ferroelectric polarization is along the monoclinic b axis. Recent theories based on the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effect allow us to specify two distinct contributions to the polarization of In2NiMnO6. One of them is associated with the cycloidal component, p1 ~ rij x (Si x Sj), and the other with the proper screw component, p2 ~ [rij (Si x Sj )]A. The latter is explained by coupling between spin helicity and "ferriaxial" crystal rotation with macroscopic ferroaxial vector A, characteristic of the B-site ordered perovskite systems with out-of-plane octahedral tilting.

The inversion and volume effects on magnetism in a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and its gallium-substituted system, CoAl2-xGaxO4, were investigated. Magnetically frustrated Co2+ with spin S = 3/2 on the tetrahedral site formed a diamond lattice in CoAl2O4 located in the vicinity of the magnetic phase boundary between Neel and spin-spiral states. In the Ga-substituted system, the number of Co ions, the so-called inversion h dominating the octahedral site, increased with increasing x. From comprehensive crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal measurements, increments of both volume and inversion strongly reduced the Neel point, while the latter also induced a spin-glass state above the critical value of hc = 0.09. In the spin glass state, h > hc, the orbital degree of freedom of Co2+ ions in the octahedral site appeared in the magnetic entropy, which couples strongly with that of spin, even above the magnetic transitions. Above h ~ hc, the field-induced quenched magnetic moment appeared above the transitions. Therefore, a short range ordered state emerged among the paramagnetic, antiferromganetic, and spin-glass states in the magnetic phase diagram.

We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Through magnetic linear dichroism spectroscopy, the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes has been extracted and found to be 2-4 times greater than values for semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. This large anisotropy is consistent with our calculations and can be understood in terms of large orbital paramagnetism of electrons in metallic nanotubes arising from the Aharonov-Bohm-phase-induced gap opening in a parallel field. We also compare our values with previous work for semiconducting nanotubes, which confirm a break from the prediction that the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy increases linearly with the diameter.

To elucidate the underlying nature of the hidden order (HO) state in heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2, we measure electrical transport properties of ultraclean crystals in a high field/low temperature regime. Unlike previous studies, the present system with much less impurity scattering resolves a distinct anomaly of the Hall resistivity at H*=22.5 T well below the destruction field of the HO phase ~36 T. In addition, a novel quantum oscillation appears above a magnetic field slightly below H*. These results indicate an abrupt reconstruction of the Fermi surface, which implies a possible phase transition well within the HO phase caused by a band-dependent destruction of the HO parameter. The present results definitely indicate that the HO transition should be described by an itinerant electron picture.

Recent cyclotron resonance experiments in n-type CdS at ultra-high magnetic fields have revealed a pronounced maximum of the electron cyclotron mass as a function of temperature. In order to interpret these data, we calculate the magneto-absorption spectra of polarons in n-CdS using the arbitrary-coupling approach. We show that in high magnetic fields the polaron effects beyond the weak-coupling approximation clearly reveal themselves in the magneto-optical absorption even at relatively small values of the Froehlich coupling constant. In particular, those effects result in a non-monotonous behaviour of the cyclotron mass as a function of temperature. We extend the theory to take into account a combined effect of several scattering mechanisms on the magneto-absorption spectra. The extended theory allows us to interpret quantitatively the experimentally observed behaviour of the cyclotron mass in CdS.
