We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the entropy rate of the system to be zero under any system-environment Hamiltonian interaction. We call the class of system-environment states that satisfy this condition lazy states. They are a generalization of classically correlated states defined by quantum discord, but based on projective measurements of any rank. The concept of lazy states permits the construction of a protocol for detecting global quantum correlations using only local dynamical information. We show how quantum correlations to the environment provide bounds to the entropy rate, and how to estimate dissipation rates for general non-Markovian open quantum systems.

We detected the CO emission from two sources, IRAS 16342-3814 and IRAS 18286-0959. The IRAS 16342-3814 CO emission exhibits a spectrum that is well fit to a Gaussian profile, rather than to a parabolic profile, with a velocity width (FWHM) of 158+/-6 km/s and an intensity peak at VLSR = 50+/-2 km/s. The mass loss rate of the star is estimated to be ~2.9x10^-5 M_sun/yr. Our morpho-kinematic models suggest that the CO emission is optically thin and associated with a bipolar outflow rather than with a (cold and relatively small) torus. The IRAS 18286-0959 CO emission has a velocity width (FWHM) of 3.0+/-0.2 km/s, smaller than typically seen in AGB envelopes. The narrow velocity width of the CO emission suggests that it originates from either an interstellar molecular cloud or a slowly-rotating circumstellar envelope that harbors the water maser source.

This paper discusses the no-cloning theorem in a logico-algebraic approach. In this approach, an orthoalgebra is considered as a general structure for propositions in a physical theory. We proved that an orthoalgebra admits cloning operation if and only if it is a Boolean algebra. That is, only classical theory admits the cloning of states. If unsharp propositions are to be included in the theory, then a notion of effect algebra is considered. We proved that an atomic Archimedean effect algebra admitting cloning operation is a Boolean algebra. This paper also presents a partial result indicating a relation between cloning on effect algebras and hidden variables.

In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework to construct matching algorithms for any biometric authentication systems. Conventional matching algorithms are not necessarily secure against strong intentional impersonation attacks such as wolf attacks. The wolf attack is an attempt to impersonate a genuine user by presenting a "wolf" to a biometric authentication system without the knowledge of a genuine user's biometric sample. A wolf is a sample which can be accepted as a match with multiple templates. The wolf attack probability (WAP) is the maximum success probability of the wolf attack, which was proposed by Une, Otsuka, Imai as a measure for evaluating security of biometric authentication systems. We present a principle for construction of secure matching algorithms against the wolf attack for any biometric authentication systems. The ideal matching algorithm determines a threshold for each input value depending on the entropy of the probability distribution of the (Hamming) distances. Then we show that if the information about the probability distribution for each input value is perfectly given, then our matching algorithm is secure against the wolf attack. Our generalized matching algorithm gives a theoretical framework to construct secure matching algorithms. How lower WAP is achievable depends on how accurately the entropy is estimated. Then there is a trade-off between the efficiency and the achievable WAP. Almost every conventional matching algorithm employs a fixed threshold and hence it can be regarded as an efficient but insecure instance of our theoretical framework. Daugman's IrisCode recognition algorithm proposed can also be regarded as a non-optimal instance of our framework.

We discuss the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) quantum key distribution protocol in the light of quantum algorithmic information. While Shannon's information theory needs a probability to define a notion of information, algorithmic information theory does not need it and can assign a notion of information to an individual object. The program length necessary to describe an object, Kolmogorov complexity, plays the most fundamental role in the theory. In the context of algorithmic information theory, we formulate a security criterion for the quantum key distribution by using the quantum Kolmogorov complexity that was recently defined by Vitányi. We show that a simple BB84 protocol indeed distribute a binary sequence between Alice and Bob that looks almost random for Eve with a probability exponentially close to 1.

For a unified analysis on the phase estimation, we focus on the limiting distribution. It is shown that the limiting distribution can be given by the absolute square of the Fourier transform of $L^2$ function whose support belongs to $[-1,1]$. Using this relation, we study the relation between the variance of the limiting distribution and its tail probability. As our result, we prove that the protocol minimizing the asymptotic variance does not minimize the tail probability. Depending on the width of interval, we derive the estimation protocol minimizing the tail probability out of a given interval. Such an optimal protocol is given by a prolate spheroidal wave function which often appears in wavelet or time-limited Fourier analysis. Also, the minimum confidence interval is derived with the framework of interval estimation that assures a given confidence coefficient.

A limitation on simultaneous measurement of two arbitrary positive operator valued measures is discussed. In general, simultaneous measurement of two noncommutative observables is only approximately possible. Following Werner's formulation, we introduce a distance between observables to quantify an accuracy of measurement. We derive an inequality that relates the achievable accuracy with noncommutativity between two observables. As a byproduct a necessary condition for two positive operator valued measures to be simultaneously measurable is obtained.

We have made multi-epoch VLBI observations of H2O maser emission in the massive star forming region IRAS 06061+2151 with the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) from 2005 May to 2007 October. The detected maser features are distributed within an 1\arcsec$\times$1\arcsec (2000 au$\times$2000 au at the source position) around the ultra-compact H {\small\bf II} region seen in radio continuum emission. Their bipolar morphology and expanding motion traced through their relative proper motions indicate that they are excited by an energetic bipolar outflow. Our three-dimensional model fitting has shown that the maser kinematical structure in IRAS 06061+2151 is able to be explained by a biconical outflow with a large opening angle ($>$ 50\degr). The position angle of the flow major axis coincides very well with that of the large scale jet seen in 2.1$\:μ\rmn{m}$ hydrogen emission. This maser geometry indicates the existence of dual structures composed of a collimated jet and a less collimated massive molecular flow. We have also detected a large velocity gradient in the southern maser group. This can be explained by a very small (on a scale of several tens of au) and clumpy (the density contrast by an order of magnitude or more) structure of the parental cloud. Such a structure may be formed by strong instability of shock front or splitting of high density core.

We investigate a state discrimination problem in operationally the most general framework to use a probability, including both classical, quantum theories, and more. In this wide framework, introducing closely related family of ensembles (which we call a {\it Helstrom family of ensembles}) with the problem, we provide a geometrical method to find an optimal measurement for state discrimination by means of Bayesian strategy. We illustrate our method in 2-level quantum systems and in a probabilistic model with square-state space to reproduce e.g., the optimal success probabilities for binary state discrimination and $N$ numbers of symmetric quantum states. The existences of families of ensembles in binary cases are shown both in classical and quantum theories in any generic cases.

We present a distance measurement for the semiregular variable S Crateris (S Crt) based on its annual parallax. With the unique dual beam system of the VLBI Exploration for Radio Astrometry (VERA) telescopes, we measured the absolute proper motion of a water maser spot associated with S Crt, referred to the quasar J1147-0724 located at an angular separation of 1.23$^{\circ}$. In observations spanning nearly two years, we have detected the maser spot at the LSR velocity of 34.7 km s$^{-1}$, for which we measured the annual parallax of 2.33$\pm$0.13 mas corresponding to a distance of 430$^{+25}_{-23}$ pc. This measurement has an accuracy one order of magnitude better than the parallax measurements of HIPPARCOS. The angular distribution and three-dimensional velocity field of maser spots indicate a bipolar outflow with the flow axis along northeast-southwest direction. Using the distance and photospheric temperature, we estimate the stellar radius of S Crt and compare it with those of Mira variables.

Based on astrometric monitoring for 13 months, we successfully measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.88 +/- 0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.14 +0.11/-0.09 kpc. This is the most accurate distance to VY CMa and the first one based on an annual parallax measurement. The luminosity of VY CMa has been overestimated due to a previously accepted distance. With our result, we re-estimate the luminosity of VY CMa to be (3 +/- 0.5) x 10^5 L_sun using the bolometric flux integrated over optical and IR wavelengths. This improved luminosity value makes location of VY CMa on the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) diagram much closer to the theoretically allowable zone (i.e. the left side of the Hayashi track) than previous ones, though uncertainty in the effective temperature of the stellar surface still does not permit us to make a final conclusion.

Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we derive an annual parallax of IRAS 22198+6336 to be 1.309$\pm$0.047 mas, corresponding to the distance of 764$\pm$27 pc from the Sun. Although the most principal error source of our astrometry is attributed to the internal structure of the maser spots, we successfully reduce the errors in the derived annual parallax by employing the position measurements for all of the 26 detected maser spots. Based on this result, we reanalyze the spectral energy distribution (SED) of IRAS 22198+6336 and find that the bolometric luminosity and total mass of IRAS 22198+6336 are 450$L_{\odot}$ and 7$M_{\odot}$, respectively. These values are consistent with an intermediate-mass YSO deeply embedded in the dense dust core, which has been proposed to be an intermediate-mass counterpart of a low-mass Class 0 source. In addition, we obtain absolute proper motions of the H$_{2}$O masers for the most blue-shifted components. We propose that the collimated jets aligned along the east-west direction are the most plausible explanation for the origin of the detected maser features.

[Context] Water fountain stars are very young post-AGB stars with high velocity water maser jets. They are the best objects to study the onset of bipolar jets from evolved stars due to their young dynamical ages. [Methods] We use the Arizona Radio Observatory 10m telescope to observe the CO J=2-1 line and compare the line parameters with that of masers. [Results] We report the detection of 12CO and 13COJ=2-1 lines from IRAS 16342-3814. The inferred 12CO mass loss rate is an order of magnitude lower than the infrared and OH mass loss rates, indicating a very cold and thick O-rich circumstellar envelope around the star. We also find a 12CO expansion velocity of Vexp = 46 +- 1 km/s that is too high for an AGB wind and confirm the systemic velocity of 44 +- 1 km/s. In addition we measure a very low 12CO/13CO line ratio of 1.7. [Conclusions] The first detection of CO lines has provided a new way to investigate the water fountain stars. Given the high expansion velocity of the CO gas and its relation to maser velocities, we infer that the CO emission region is co-located with the OH mainline masers in the warm base of the optical bipolar lobes, while the high velocity OH1612MHz and H2O masers are located in the side walls and at the farthest ends of the bipolar lobes, respectively. Further observations are highly desired to understand the very low 12CO/13CO line ratio.

We successfully detected a trigonometric parallax of 0.355+/-0.030 mas, corresponding to a source distance of 2.82+/-0.24 kpc. Our direct distance determination of NGC 281 has resolved the large distance discrepancy between previous photometric and kinematic studies; likely NGC 281 is in the far side of the Perseus spiral arm. The source distance as well as the absolute proper motions were used to demonstrate the 3D structure and expansion of the NGC 281 superbubble, ~650 pc in size parallel to the Galactic disk and with a shape slightly elongated along the disk or spherical, but not vertically elongated, indicating the superbubble expansion may be confined to the disk. We estimate the expansion velocity of the superbubble as ~20 km/s both perpendicular to and parallel to the Galactic disk with a consistent timescale of ~20 Myr.

We present proper motions of water masers toward the Onsala 1 star forming region, observed with the Japanese VLBI network at three epochs spanning 290 days. We found that there are two water maser clusters (WMC1 and WMC2) separated from each other by 1".6 (2900 AU at a distance of 1.8 kpc). The proper motion measurement reveals that WMC1 is associated with a bipolar outflow elongated in the east-west direction with an expansion velocity of 69+-11 km/s. WMC1 and WMC2 are associated with two 345 GHz continuum dust emission sources, and located 2" (3600 AU) east from the core of an ultracompact HII region traced by 8.4 GHz radio continuum emission. This indicates that star formation activity of Onsala 1 could move from the west side of ultracompact HII region to the east side of two young stellar objects associated with the water masers. We also find that WMC1 and UC HII region could be gravitationally bound. Their relative velocity along the line of sight is 3 km/s, and total mass is 37 Mo. Onsala 1 seems to harbor a binary star at different evolutionary stage.

This object was identified as a K-type supergiant in 1970s, which was unusual as a stellar maser source. The spectrum of H2O masers consists of 5 peaks separated roughly equally by a few km/s each. The H2O masers were spatially resolved into more than 15 features, which spread about 50 mas along the east--west direction. However, no correlation was found between the proper motion vectors and their spatial distributions; the velocity field of the envelope seems random. A statistical parallax method applied to the observed proper-motion data set gives a distance of 1.0+-0.4 kpc for this object, that is considerably smaller than previously thought. The distance indicates that this is an evolved star with L~5800 Lsun. This star shows radio, infrared, and optical characteristics quite similar to those of the population II post-AGB stars such as RV Tau variables.

With phase-referencing interferometry referred to the radio continuum source Sgr A*, accurate positions of masers were obtained for three detected objects: IRS 10 EE (7 epochs), IRS 15NE (2 epochs), and SiO 6 (only 1 epoch). Because circumstellar masers of these objects were resolved into several components, proper motions for the maser sources were derived with several different methods. Combining our VLBA results with those of the previous VLA observations, we obtained the IRS 10EE proper motion of 76+-3 km s^{-1} (at 8 kpc) to the south relative to Sgr A*. Almost null proper motion of this star in the east--west direction results in a net transverse motion of the infrared reference frame of about 30+-9 km s^{-1} to the west relative to Sgr A*. The proper-motion data also suggests that IRS 10EE is an astrometric binary with an unseen massive companion.

Recent VLBI observations of H2O maser sources have revealed that some of the spatio-kinematical structures of H2O maser sources exhibit stellar jets with extremely spatially and kinematically high collimation. Such stellar H2O maser jets, so-called "water fountain" sources, have been identified in about 10 sources to date. Here we review recent VLBI observations and relevant observational results of the water fountain sources. They have revealed a typical dynamical age and the detailed kinematical structures of the water fountains, possibility of the existence of "equatorial flows", and the evolutionary status of the host stars. The location and kinematics of one of the water fountain sources in the Galaxy is also revealed and shown here.

We have carried out phase-referencing VLBI astrometry and measured an annual parallax of the maser features in SVS 13 of 4.25+/-0.32 mas, corresponding to the distance of 235+/-18 pc from the Sun. Our result is consistent with a photometric distance of 220 pc previously reported. Even though the maser features were detectable only for 6 months, the present results provide the distance to NGC 1333 with much higher accuracy than photometric methods. The absolute positions and proper motions have been derived, revealing that the H2O masers with the LSR (local standard of rest) velocities of 7-8 km s-1 are most likely associated with VLA4A, which is a radio counterpart of SVS 13. The origin of the observed proper motions of the maser features are currently difficult to attribute to either the jet or the rotating circumstellar disk associated with VLA4A, which should be investigated through future high-resolution astrometric observations of VLA4A and other radio sources in NGC 1333.

This is the smallest parallax ever measured, and the first one detected beyond 5 kpc. The source distance as well as proper motions are used to constrain the outer rotation curve of the Galaxy, demonstrating that the difference of rotation velocities at the Sun and at S269 (which is 13.1 kpc away from the Galaxy's center) is less than 3%. This gives the strongest constraint on the flatness of the outer rotation curve and provides a direct confirmation on the existence of large amount of dark matter in the Galaxy's outer disk.

It gives a nontrivial bound for summation of their maximum values. We give a generalization of this bound (weak version of the Landau-Pollak uncertainty relation). Using the VLBA, we have observed H2O maser emission in the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 19134+2131(I19134), in which the H2O maser spectrum has two groups of emission features separated in radial velocity by ~100 km/s. We also obtained optical images of I19134 with the HST to locate the bipolar reflection nebula in this source for the first time. The spatio-kinematical structure of the H2O masers indicates the existence of a fast, collimated (precessing) flow having a projected extent of ~140 mas and an expansion rate of ~1.9 mas/yr on the sky plane, which gives a dynamical age of only ~40 yr. The two detected optical lobes are also separated by ~150 mas in almost the same direction as that of the collimated flow. The good agreement between the extent and orientation of the H2O maser outflow and optical lobes suggests that the lobes have been recently formed along the collimated fast flow. The positions of all of the detected maser features have been measured with respect to the reference source J1925+2106 over one year. Therefore we analyzed maser feature motions that consist of the combination of an annual parallax, a secular motion following Galactic rotation, and the intrinsic motions within the flow. We obtain an annual-parallax distance to I19134 of D~8 kpc kpc and estimate its location in the Galaxy to be (R, theta, z)=(7.4 kpc, 62 deg, 0.65 kpc). From the mean motion of the blue-shifted and red-shifted clusters of maser features, we estimate the 3-D secular motion of I19134 to be (V_{R}, V_{theta}, V_{z})=(3, 125, 8) [km/s]. From the height from the Galactic plane, z, and the velocity component perpendicular to the Galactic plane, V_{z}, we estimate a rough upper limit of ~9 M_{sun} to the stellar mass of I19134's progenitor.

The distance to Orion KL is determined for the first time with the annual parallax method in these observations. Although this value is consistent with that of the previously reported, 480+/-80 pc, which is estimated from the statistical parallax method using proper motions and radial velocities of the H2O maser features, our new results provide the much more accurate value with an uncertainty of only 4%. In addition to the annual parallax, we have detected an absolute proper motion of the maser feature, suggesting an outflow motion powered by the radio source I along with the systematic motion of source I itself.

We have conducted multi-epoch phase-referencing observations of the maser source with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) over a monitoring period of 6 months since May 2006. We find that the H2O maser features in NGC 281 West are systematically moving toward the southwest and further away from the Galactic plane with a vertical velocity of ~20-30 km/s at its estimated distance of 2.2-3.5 kpc. Our new results provide the most direct evidence that the gas in the NGC 281 region on the HI loop was blown out from the Galactic plane, most likely in a superbubble driven by multiple or sequential supernova explosions in the Galactic plane.

We also found a group of stars that does not follow to the Galactic rotation. This feature appears in the Galactic disk at l~ 27 deg, and extends more than 15 deg in Galactic latitude, like a stream of tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy.

In addition to the known coincidence of some Voronoi diagrams for one-qubit pure states, we will show that even for mixed one-qubit states, as far as sites are given as pure states, the Voronoi diagram with respect to some distances -- the divergence, the Bures distance, and the Euclidean distance -- are all the same.
As to higher level pure quantum states, for the divergence, the
Fubini-Study distance, and the Bures distance, the coincidence of the diagrams still holds, while the coincidence of the diagrams with respect to the divergence and the Euclidean distance no longer holds. That fact has a significant meaning when we try to apply the method used for a numerical estimation of a one-qubit quantum channel capacity to a higher level system.

It is known that Tardos's collusion-secure probabilistic fingerprinting code (Tardos code; STOC'03) has length of theoretically minimal order with respect to the number of colluding users. However, Tardos code uses certain continuous probability distribution in codeword generation, which creates some problems for practical use, in particular, it requires large extra memory. A solution proposed so far is to use some finite probability distributions instead. In this paper, we determine the optimal finite distribution in order to decrease extra memory amount. By our result, the extra memory is reduced to 1/32 of the original, or even becomes needless, in some practical setting. Moreover, the code length is also reduced, e.g. to about 20.6% of Tardos code asymptotically. Finally, we address some other practical issues such as approximation errors which are inevitable in any real implementation.

Let us consider two quantum systems: system A and system B. Suppose that a classical information is encoded to quantum states of the system A and we distribute this information to both systems by making them interact with each other. We show that it is impossible to achieve this goal perfectly if the strength of interaction between the quantum systems is smaller than a quantity that is determined by noncommutativity between a Hamiltonian of the system A and the states (density operators) used for the information encoding. It is a consequence of a generalized Winger-Araki-Yanase theorem which enables us to treat conserved quantities other than additive ones.

The maser spatio-kinematical structure has well persisted since previous observations, in which the masers are expected to be associated with a highly-collimated bipolar jet and an infalling-rotating disk in the northern and southern clusters of H2O maser features, respectively. We estimated a jet expansion speed of ~100 km/s and re-estimated a dynamical age of the whole jet to be 5.6x10^4 yrs. We have investigated the spatial distribution of Doppler velocities during the previous and present observations and relative proper motions of H2O maser features in the southern cluster, and a relative bulk motion between the two maser clusters. They are well explained by a model of an infalling-rotating disk with a radius of ~1000 AU and a central stellar mass of 5-10 M_sun, rather than by a model of a bipolar jet perpendicular to the observed CO outflow. Based on the derived H2O maser spatio-kinematical parameters, we discuss the formation mechanism of the massive young stellar objects and the outflow development in G192.16-3.84.

For one-qubit pure quantum states, it is already proved that the Voronoi diagrams with respect to two distances -- Euclidean distance and the quantum divergence -- coincide. This fact is a support for a known method to calculate the Holevo capacity. To consider an applicability of this method to quantum states of a higher level system, it is essential to check if the coincidence of the Voronoi diagrams also occurs. In this paper, we show a negative result for that expectation. In other words, we mathematically prove that those diagrams no longer coincide in a higher dimension. That indicates that the method used in one-qubit case to calculate the Holevo capacity might not be effective in a higher dimension.

The presence of an additive conserved quantity imposes a limitation on the measurement process. According to the Wigner-Araki-Yanase theorem, the perfect repeatability and the distinguishability on the apparatus cannot be attained simultaneously. Instead of the repeatability, in this paper, the distinguishability on both systems is examined. We derive a trade-off inequality between the distinguishability of the final states on the system and the one on the apparatus. The inequality shows that the perfect distinguishability of both systems cannot be attained simultaneously.

In this paper we explore further the connections between convex bodies related to quantum correlation experiments with dichotomic variables and related bodies studied in combinatorial optimization, especially cut polyhedra. Such a relationship was established in Avis, Imai, Ito and Sasaki (2005 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 38 10971-87) with respect to Bell inequalities. We show that several well known bodies related to cut polyhedra are equivalent to bodies such as those defined by Tsirelson (1993 Hadronic J. S. 8 329-45) to represent hidden deterministic behaviors, quantum behaviors, and no-signalling behaviors. Among other things, our results allow a unique representation of these bodies, give a necessary condition for vertices of the no-signalling polytope, and give a method for bounding the quantum violation of Bell inequalities by means of a body that contains the set of quantum behaviors. Optimization over this latter body may be performed efficiently by semidefinite programming. In the second part of the paper we apply these results to the study of classical correlation functions. We provide a complete list of tight inequalities for the two party case with (m,n) dichotomic observables when m=4,n=4 and when min{m,n}<=3, and give a new general family of correlation inequalities.

We present the first direct measurements of the magnetic field strength and direction in a collimated jet from an evolved star on its way to become a planetary nebula. Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the linear and circular polarization of the water masers in the collimated jet of W43A reveal a strong toroidal magnetic field, indicating that the jet is magnetically collimated. The magnetic field strength in the jet extrapolated back to the stellar surface yields a surface field of several Gauss, consistent with the measurements of maser polarization in a large sample of evolved stars. The origin of the magnetic field is yet unknown, although the jet precession might point to the existence of a heavy planet or stellar companion. This is the first direct observational evidence for magnetic collimation in the jets, that likely play an important role in sha** planetary nebulae.

1-qubit quantum states form a space called the three-dimensional Bloch ball. To compute Holevo capacity, Voronoi diagrams in the Bloch ball with respect to the quantum divergence have been used as a powerful tool. These diagrams basically treat mixed quantum states corresponding to points in the interior of the Bloch ball. Due to the existence of logarithm in the quantum divergence, the diagrams are not defined on pure quantum states corresponding to points on the two-dimensional sphere. This paper first defines the Voronoi diagrams for pure quantum states on the Bloch sphere by the Fubini-Study distance and the Bures distance. We also introduce other Voronoi diagrams on the sphere obtained by taking a limit of Voronoi diagrams for mixed quantum states by the quantum divergences in the Bloch ball. These diagrams are shown to be equivalent to the ordinary Voronoi diagram on the sphere.

Moreover, comparison of muSR spectra between GN-S and GN-R suggests that they are a pair of complete optical isomers in terms of both crystallographic and magnetic structure. Possibility of magnetic chirality in such a pair is discussed.

Planetary nebulae often have asymmetric shapes, which could arise due to collimated jets from evolved stars before evolution to the planetary nebula phase. The source of jet collimation in these stars is unknown. Magnetic fields are thought to collimate outflows that are observed in many other astrophysical sources, such as active galactic nuclei and proto-stars, although hitherto there are no direct observations of both the magnetic field direction and strength in any collimated jet. Theoretical models have shown that magnetic fields could also be the dominant source of collimation of jet in evolved stars. Here we report measurements of the polarization of water vapour masers that trace the precessing jet emanating from the asymptotic giant branch star W43A at 2.6 kpc from the Sun, which is undergoing rapid evolution into a planetary nebula. The masers occur in two clusters at opposing tips of the jets, ~1,000 AU from the star. We find direct evidence that the magnetic field is collimating the jet.

The cut polytope of a graph arises in many fields. Although much is known about facets of the cut polytope of the complete graph, very little is known for general graphs. The study of Bell inequalities in quantum information science requires knowledge of the facets of the cut polytope of the complete bipartite graph or, more generally, the complete k-partite graph. Lifting is a central tool to prove certain inequalities are facet inducing for the cut polytope. In this paper we introduce a lifting operation, named triangular elimination, applicable to the cut polytope of a wide range of graphs. Triangular elimination is a specific combination of zero-lifting and Fourier-Motzkin elimination using the triangle inequality. We prove sufficient conditions for the triangular elimination of facet inducing inequalities to be facet inducing. The proof is based on a variation of the lifting lemma adapted to general graphs. The result can be used to derive facet inducing inequalities of the cut polytope of various graphs from those of the complete graph. We also investigate the symmetry of facet inducing inequalities of the cut polytope of the complete bipartite graph derived by triangular elimination.

The measured annual parallax is 0.489 +/- 0.017 milli-arcseconds (2.04 +/- 0.07 kpc), where the error is dominated by a systematic atmospheric contribution. This distance is consistent with photometric distances from previous observations and with the distance determined from CH3OH maser astrometry presented in a related paper. We also find that the source driving the H2O outflow, the ``TW-object'', moves with a 3-dimensional velocity of > 7 km/s relative to the ultracompact HII region W3(OH).

We report Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 43 GHz v=1, J=1-0 SiO masers in the circumstellar envelope of the M-type semi-regular variable star VX Sgr at 3 epochs during 1999 April-May. These high-resolution VLBA images reveal a persistent ringlike distribution of SiO masers with a projected radius of ~3 stellar radii. The typical angular size of 0.5 mas for individual maser feature was estimated from two-point correlation function analysis for maser spots. We found that the apparent size scale of maser features was distinctly smaller than that observed in the previous observations by comparing their fractions of total power imaged. This change in the size scale of maser emission may be related to stellar activity that caused a large SiO flare during our observations. Our observations confirmed the asymmetric distribution of maser emission, but the overall morphology has changed significantly with the majority of masers clustering to the north-east of the star compared to that lying to the south-west direction in 1992. By identifying 42 matched maser features appearing in all the three epochs, we determined the contraction of an SiO maser shell toward VX Sgr at a proper motion of -0.507 mas/yr, corresponding to a velocity of about 4 km/s at a distance of 1.7 kpc to VX Sgr. Such a velocity is on the order of the sound speed, and can be easily explained by the gravitational infall of material from the circumstellar dust shell.

We show that some two-party Bell inequalities with two-valued observables are stronger than the CHSH inequality for 3 \otimes 3 isotropic states in the sense that they are violated by some isotropic states in the 3 \otimes 3 system that do not violate the CHSH inequality. These Bell inequalities are obtained by applying triangular elimination to the list of known facet inequalities of the cut polytope on nine points. This gives a partial solution to an open problem posed by Collins and Gisin. The results of numerical optimization suggest that they are candidates for being stronger than the I_3322 Bell inequality for 3 \otimes 3 isotropic states. On the other hand, we found no Bell inequalities stronger than the CHSH inequality for 2 \otimes 2 isotropic states. In addition, we illustrate an inclusion relation among some Bell inequalities derived by triangular elimination.

We establish a relation between the two-party Bell inequalities for two-valued measurements and a high-dimensional convex polytope called the cut polytope in polyhedral combinatorics. Using this relation, we propose a method, triangular elimination, to derive tight Bell inequalities from facets of the cut polytope. This method gives two hundred million inequivalent tight Bell inequalities from currently known results on the cut polytope. In addition, this method gives general formulas which represent families of infinitely many Bell inequalities. These results can be used to examine general properties of Bell inequalities.
