Within the paradigm of non-perturbative Einstein gravity we study continuous manifolds which possess de Sitter interiors and Kerr exteriors. These manifolds could represent the spacetime of rotating gravastars or other similar black hole mimickers. The scheme presented here allows for a $C^{n}$ transition from the exactly de Sitter interior to the exactly Kerr exterior, with $n$ arbitrarily large. Generic properties that such models must possess are discussed, such as the changing of the topology of the ergosphere from $S^{2}$ to $S^{1}\times S^{1}$. It is shown how in the outer layers of the transition region (the "atmosphere" as it is often called in astrophysics) the dominant/weak and strong energy conditions can be respected. However, much like in the case of its static spherically symmetric gravastar counterpart, there must be some assumptions imposed in the atmosphere for the energy conditions to hold. These assumptions turn out to not be severe. The class of manifolds presented here are expected to possess all the salient features of the fully generic case. Strictly speaking, a number of the results are also applicable to the locally anti-de Sitter core scenario, although we focus on the case of a positive cosmological constant.

In this paper we study properties that the vacuum must possess in the minimal extension to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) where the action is supplemented with a quadratic torsion term. No assumption is made about the weakness of the quadratic term although in the weak-field regime the validity of our previously derived perturbative solution is confirmed. Regarding the exact nature of the vacuum, it is found that if the center of symmetry is to be regular, the mathematical conditions on the tetrad at the isotropy point mimic those of general relativity. With respect to horizons it is found that, under very mild assumptions, a smooth horizon cannot exist unless the quadratic torsion coupling, $α$, vanishes, which is the TEGR limit (with the Schwarzschild tetrad as its solution). This analysis is then supplemented with computational work utilizing asymptotically Schwarzschild boundary data. It is verified that in no case studied does a smooth horizon form. For $α> 0$ naked singularities occur which break down the equations of motion before a horizon can form. For $α< 0$ there is a limited range of $α$ where a vacuum horizon might exist but, if present, the horizon is singular. Therefore physically acceptable black hole horizons are problematic in the studied theory at least within the realm of vacuum static spherical symmetry. These results also imply that static spherical matter distributions generally must have extra restrictions on their spatial extent and stress-energy bounds so as to render the vacuum solution invalid in the singular region and make the solutions finite.

We find that with sufficiently large negative value of $α$ the mass of the boson stars can be made arbitrarily large. This is in contrast to General Relativity where an upper bound, $M_{max} \sim M_{Planck}^2/m$, to the mass of the boson stars built from the non-interacting scalar field exists and where the masses of boson stars in the astrophysical regime can be obtained only with the introduction of the scalar field self-interaction. With sufficiently large negative $α$ we also find negative gravitational binding energy for all masses, which can be seen as an indication of the stability of such configurations. In its positive regime, $α$ can not be made arbitrarily large as a phase transition in the stress--energy components of the $f(T)$-fluid develops. This phenomenon has already been reported to occur in polytropic stars constructed within the $f(T)$ gravity theory.

In this paper we study the so called "warp drive" spacetimes within the $U_{4}$ Riemann-Cartan manifolds of Einstein-Cartan theory. Specifically, the role that spin may play with respect to energy condition violation is considered. It turns out that with the addition of spin, the torsion terms in Einstein-Cartan gravity do allow for energy condition respecting warp drives. Limits are derived which minimize the amount of spin required in order to have a weak/null-energy condition respecting system. This is done both for the traditional Alcubierre warp drive as well as for the modified warp drive of Van Den Broeck which minimizes the amount of matter required for the drive. The ship itself is in a region of effectively vacuum and hence the torsion, which in Einstein-Cartan theory is localized in matter, does not affect the geodesic nature of the ship's trajectory. We also comment on the amount of spin and matter required in order for these conditions to hold.

We consider static spherically symmetric self-gravitating configurations of the perfect fluid within the framework of the torsion-based extended theory of gravity. In particular, we use the covariant formulation of $f(T)$ gravity with $f(T) = T + \fracα{2} T^2$, and for the fluid we assume the polytropic equation of state with the adiabatic exponent $Γ= 2$. The constructed solutions have a sharply defined radius [as in General Relativity (GR)] and can be considered as models of nonrotating compact stars. The particle number--to--stellar radius curves reveal that with positive (negative) values of $α$ smaller (greater) number of particles can be supported against gravity then in GR. For the interpretation of the energy density and the pressure within the star we adopt the GR picture where the effects due to nonlinearity of $f(T)$ are seen as a $f(T)$ fluid, which together with the polytropic fluid contributes to the effective energy momentum. We find that sufficiently large positive $α$ gives rise to an abrupt sign change (phase transition) in the energy density and in the principal pressures of the $f(T)$ fluid, taking place within the interior of the star. The corresponding radial profile of the effective energy density is approximately constant over the central region of the star, mimicking an incompressible core. This interesting phenomenon is not found in configurations with negative $α$.

We consider extended covariant teleparallel $(f(T))$ gravity whose action is analytic in the torsion scalar and which is sourced by an $su(2)$ valued Yang-Mills field. Specifically, we search for regular solutions to the coupled $f(T)$ Yang-Mills system. For $f(T)=T$ we, not surprisingly, recover the Bartnik-McKinnon solitons of Einstein Yang-Mills theory. However, interesting effects are discovered with the addition of terms in the action which are nonlinear in the torsion scalar, which we specifically study up to cubic order. With the addition of the nonlinear terms the number of regular solutions becomes finite. As well, beyond critical values of the coupling constants we find that there exist \emph{no} regular solutions. These behaviors are asymmetric with respect to the sign of the nonlinear coupling constants and the elimination of regular solutions turns out to be extremely sensitive to the presence of the cubic coupling. It may be possible, therefore, that with sufficiently high powers of torsion in the action, there may be no regular Yang-Mills static solutions.

Recently, a fully covariant version of the theory of $F(T)$ torsion gravity has been introduced (arXiv:1510.08432v2 [gr-qc]). In covariant $F(T)$ gravity the Schwarzschild solution is not a vacuum solution for $F(T)\neq T$ and therefore determining the spherically symmetric vacuum is an important open problem. Within the covariant framework we perturbatively solve the spherically symmetric vacuum gravitational equations around the Schwarzschild solution for the scenario with $F(T)=T + (α/2)\, T^{2}$, representing the dominant terms in theories governed by Lagrangians analytic in the torsion scalar. From this we compute the perihelion shift correction to solar system planetary orbits as well as perturbative gravitational effects near neutron stars. This allows us to set an upper bound on the magnitude of the coupling constant, $α$, which governs deviations from General Relativity. We find the bound on this nonlinear torsion coupling constant by specifically considering the uncertainty in the perihelion shift of Mercury. We also analyze a bound from a similar comparison with the periastron orbit of the binary pulsar PSR J0045-7319 as an independent check for consistency. Setting bounds on the dominant nonlinear coupling is important in determining if other effects in the solar system or greater universe could be attributable to nonlinear torsion.

Within the framework of the extended teleparallel gravity, a new class of boson stars has recently been constructed by introducing the nonminimal coupling of the scalar field to the torsion scalar. An interesting feature of these static, spherical, self-gravitating configurations of the massive complex scalar field is their central region with outwardly increasing energy density, surrounded by a thick shell within which the joining with the usual asymptotically Schwarzschild tail takes place. In this work we extend the original model with the $U(1)$ gauge field and we find that the combined effect of the charge and coupling of the field to torsion leads to a significant increase of the maximal mass and the particle number that can be supported against gravity. We also show that some charged configurations preserve the property of having the outwardly increasing energy density over the central region, regardless of the fact that charging the configurations affects the anisotropy of the pressures in the opposite way relative to that of the field-to-torsion coupling terms.

We study the nonminimally coupled complex scalar field within the framework of teleparallel gravity. Coupling of the field nonminimally to the torsion scalar destroys the Lorentz invariance of the theory in the sense that the resulting equations of motion depend on the choice of a tetrad. For the assumed static spherically symmetric spacetime, we find a tetrad which leads to a self-consistent set of equations, and we construct the self-gravitating configurations of the scalar field---boson stars. The resulting configurations develop anisotropic principal pressures and satisfy the dominant energy condition. An interesting property of the configurations obtained with sufficiently large field-to-torsion coupling constant is the outwardly increasing energy density, followed by an abrupt drop towards the usual asymptotic tail. This feature is not present in the boson stars with the field minimally or nonminimally coupled to the curvature scalar, and therefore appears to be a torsion--only effect.

In this paper, we show that photon spheres may form in some configurations of boson stars constructed with a free massive complex scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity. Assuming that the boson star is transparent to light, photon spheres would give raise not only to phenomena in the realm of strong gravitational lensing, but also to considerably increased photon flux in the central region of the star, relative to the flux in its surroundings.

Radial stability of the continuous pressure gravastar is studied using the conventional Chandrasekhar method. The equation of state for the static gravastar solutions is derived and Einstein equations for small perturbations around the equilibrium are solved as an eigenvalue problem for radial pulsations. Within the model there exist a set of parameters leading to a stable fundamental mode, thus proving radial stability of the continuous pressure gravastar. It is also shown that the central energy density possesses an extremum in rho_c(R) curve which represents a splitting point between stable and unstable gravastar configurations. As such the rho_c(R) curve for the gravastar mimics the famous M(R) curve for a polytrope. Together with the former axial stability calculations this work completes the stability problem of the continuous pressure gravastar.

Quasi-local variables, i.e. quantities whose values can be derived from physics accessible within an arbitrarily small neighborhood of a spacetime point, are used to construct the equation of state (EoS) for the anisotropic fluid in the spherical symmetry. One parameter families of equilibrium solutions are obtained making it possible to assess stability properties by means of the standard M(R) method. Normal modes of radial pulsation are computed as well and are found to confirm the onset of instability as predicted by the M(R) method. As an example, a stable configuration with outwardly increasing energy density in the core is obtained with a simple quasi-local extension of the polytropic EoS. It is also found that the loss of stability occurs at higher surface compactness when the anisotropy of pressures is present.

The notion of a compact object immune to the horizon problem and comprising an anisotropic inhomogeneous fluid with a specific radial pressure behavior, i.e. the gravastar, is extended by introducing an electrically charged component. Einstein-Maxwell field equations are solved in the asymptotically de Sitter interior where a source of the electric field is coupled to the fluid energy density. Two different solutions which satisfy the dominant energy condition are given: one is the delta-shell model for which the analysis is carried out within Israel's thin shell formalism, the other approach - the continuous profile model - is solved numerically and the interior solutions have been (smoothly) joined with the Reissner-Nordstrom exterior. The effect of electric charge is considered, and the equation of state, the speed of sound and the surface redshift are calculated for both models.

We consider the gravastar model where the vacuum phase transition between the de Sitter interior and the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior geometries takes place at a single spherical delta-shell. We derive sharp analytic bounds on the surface compactness (2m/r) that follow from the requirement that the dominant energy condition (DEC) holds at the shell. In the case of Schwarzschild exterior, the highest surface compactness is achieved with the stiff shell in the limit of vanishing (dark) energy density in the interior. In the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior, in addition to the gravastar configurations with the shell under surface pressure, gravastar configurations with vanishing shell pressure (dust shells), as well as configurations with the shell under surface tension, are allowed by the DEC. Respective bounds on the surface compactness are derived for all cases. We also consider the speed of sound on the shell as derived from the requirement that the shell is stable against the radial perturbations. The causality requirement (sound speed not exceeding that of light) further restricts the space of allowed gravastar configurations.

This narrow-band ~200 AA photometric system (uz, vz, bz, yz), first designed for the determination of effective temperature, metallicity and gravity of stars, measures the continuum spectral slope of galaxies in the rest-frame 3200-5800 AA wavelength range. Galaxies form a remarkably narrow locus (~0.03 mag) in the resulting color-color diagram. The Bruzual & Charlot population synthesis models suggest that the position of a galaxy along this locus is controlled by a degenerate combination of metallicity and age of the dominant stellar population. Galaxy distribution along the locus is bimodal, with the local minimum corresponding to an ~1 Gyr old single stellar population. The position perpendicular to the locus is independent of metallicity and age, and reflects the galaxy's dust content, as implied by both the models and the statistics of IRAS detections. A comparison of this locus with the galaxy locus in the H_delta-D_n(4000) diagram, utilized by Kauffmann et al. (2003) to estimate stellar masses, reveals a tight correlation, although the two analyzed spectral ranges barely overlap. Overall, the galaxy spectral energy distribution in the entire UV to near-IR range can be described as a single-parameter family with an accuracy of 0.1 mag, or better. This nearly one-dimensional distribution of galaxies in the multi-dimensional space of measured parameters strongly supports the conclusion of Yip et al. (2004), based on a principal component analysis, that SDSS galaxy spectra can be described by a small number of eigenspectra. Apparently, the contributions of stellar populations that dominate the optical emission from galaxies are combined in a simple and well-defined way.

Solutions for the static spherically symmetric extremally charged dust in the Majumdar--Papapetrou system have been found. For a certain amount of the allocated mass/charge, the solutions have singularities of a type which could render them physically unacceptable, since the corresponding physically relevant quantities are singular as well. These solutions, with a number of zero-nodes in the metric tensor, are regularized through the $δ$-shell formalism, thus redefining the mass/charge distributions. The bifurcating behaviour of regular solutions found before is no longer present in these singular solutions, but quantized-like behaviour in the total mass is observed. Spectrum of regularized solutions restores the equality of the Tolman--Whittaker and ADM mass, as well the equality of the net charge and ADM mass, which is the distinctive feature of Majumdar--Papapetrou systems.

The multilayered structure in previous papers is replaced by a continuous stress-energy tensor at the price of introducing anisotropy in the (fluid) model of the gravastar. Either with an ansatz for the equation of state connecting the radial $p_r$ and tangential $p_t$ pressure or with a calculated equation of state with non-homogeneous energy/fluid density, solutions are obtained which in all aspects satisfy the conditions expected for an anisotropic gravastar. Certain energy conditions have been shown to be obeyed and a polytropic equation of state has been derived. Stability of the solution with respect to possible axial perturbation is shown to hold.

Abstract:
Static spherically symmetric distributions of electrically counterpoised dust (ECD) are used to construct solutions to Einstein-Maxwell equations in Majumdar--Papapetrou formalism. Unexpected bifurcating behaviour of solutions with regard to source strength is found for localized, as well as for the delta-function ECD distributions. Unified treatment of general ECD distributions is accomplished…

Unified treatment of general ECD distributions is accomplished and it is shown that for certain source strengths one class of regular solutions approaches Minkowski spacetime, while the other comes arbitrarily close to black hole solutions.

Abstract:
We report the discovery of a locus of stars in the SDSS g-r vs. u-g color-color diagram that connects the colors of white dwarfs and M dwarfs. While its contrast with respect to the main stellar locus is only ~1:2300, this previously unrecognized feature includes 863 stars from the SDSS Data Release 1. The position and shape of the feature are in good agreement with predictions of a simple binar…

The position and shape of the feature are in good agreement with predictions of a simple binary star model that consists of a white dwarf and an M dwarf, with the components' luminosity ratio controlling the position along this binary system locus. SDSS DR1 spectra for 47 of these objects strongly support this model. The absolute magnitude--color distribution inferred for the white dwarf component is in good agreement with the models of Bergeron et al. (1995).

Abstract:
Since Baschek & Slettebak (1988) drew attention to the similarity between the abundance pattern of lambda Boo stars and that of Vega, there has been a long debate whether Vega should be listed among the chemically peculiar stars of lambda Boo type. We performed an elemental abundance analysis using a high dispersion spectrum in the optical region, and confirmed its mild metal underabundance. In…

In our discussion we reinforce the suggestion that Vega is a mild lambda Boo star.
