Abstract:
We describe an analysis comparing the $p\bar{p}$ elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in $pp$ collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV are compared with the D0 measurement…

The TOTEM cross sections extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the $pp$ cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4$σ$ level and thus provide evidence for the $t$-channel exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same $C$-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic scattering amplitude in $pp$ scattering. The combined significance of these results is larger than 5$σ$ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound.

A framework is presented to extract and understand decision-making information from a deep neural network (DNN) classifier of jet substructure tagging techniques. The general method studied is to provide expert variables that augment inputs ("eXpert AUGmented" variables, or XAUG variables), then apply layerwise relevance propagation (LRP) to networks both with and without XAUG variables. The XAUG variables are concatenated with the intermediate layers after network-specific operations (such as convolution or recurrence), and used in the final layers of the network. The results of comparing networks with and without the addition of XAUG variables show that XAUG variables can be used to interpret classifier behavior, increase discrimination ability when combined with low-level features, and in some cases capture the behavior of the classifier completely. The LRP technique can be used to find relevant information the network is using, and when combined with the XAUG variables, can be used to rank features, allowing one to find a reduced set of features that capture part of the network performance. In the studies presented, adding XAUG variables to low-level DNNs increased the efficiency of classifiers by as much as 30-40\%. In addition to performance improvements, an approach to quantify numerical uncertainties in the training of these DNNs is presented.

The station is a part of the GELATICA net in Georgia (GEorgian Large-area Angle and TIme Coincidence Array), which is devoted to the study of possible correlations in the arrival times and directions of separate EAS events over large distances. It is shown that the distribution function with the conventional exponential dependence of showers' flux on absorbing air thickness provides a good approximation for the arrival direction distribution. The dependence of the EAS absorption path estimation on the angular trimming boundary of data set is studied; the necessity of strict verification of the used value of data trimming boundary is stated.

A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment was built in order to cope with the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase~I Upgrade of the LHC. The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. A new front-end readout chip mitigates buffering and bandwidth limitations, and allows operation at low comparator thresholds. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is $99.95\pm0.05\,\%$, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are $4.80\pm0.25\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $7.99\pm0.21\,μ\mathrm{m}$ along the $100\,μ\mathrm{m}$ and $150\,μ\mathrm{m}$ pixel pitch, respectively. The findings are compared to a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the pixel detector and good agreement is found.

Pulsed red laser light with a wavelength of 672 nm is used to generate electron-hole pairs in the sensors. The induced signals are used to determine the charge collection efficiencies separately for electrons and holes drifting through the sensor. The effective trap** rates are extracted by comparing the results to simulation. The electric field is simulated using Synopsys device simulation assuming two effective defects. The generation and drift of charge carriers are simulated in an independent simulation based on PixelAV. The effective trap** rates are determined from the measured charge collection efficiencies and the simulated and measured time-resolved current pulses are compared. The effective trap** rates determined for both electrons and holes are about 50% smaller than those obtained using standard extrapolations of studies at low fluences and suggests an improved tracker performance over initial expectations.

The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

We present the expected 5-sigma discovery potential for a Z' resonance as well as the expected upper limits at 95% C.L. on the Z' production cross section and mass in the absence of a discovery.

Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to $2.2 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to $4.3 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the $W$ boson is $\MW = 80\,387 \pm 16 \text{MeV}$. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of $\MW = 80\,385 \pm 15 \text{MeV}$.

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and {\dzero} collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8 fb$^{-1}$. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is $173.18 \pm 0.56 \thinspace ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.75 \thinspace ({\rm syst})$ GeV or $173.18 \pm 0.94$ GeV, which has a precision of $\pm 0.54%$, making this the most precise determination of the top quark mass.

We investigate final states arising from $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}μτ\tildeν \tildeν$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}ττ\tildeν \tildeν$. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the ($m_{\tilde{t}_{1}}$,$m_{\tildeν}$) plane.

This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

Abstract:
We present a measurement of the helicity of the W boson produced in top quark decays using ttbar decays in the l+jets and dilepton final states selected from a sample of 5.4 fb^-1 of collisions recorded using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We measure the fractions of longitudinal and right-handed W bosons to be f_0 = 0.669 +- 0.102 [ +- 0.078 (stat.) +- 0.065 (syst.)] and…

We measure the fractions of longitudinal and right-handed W bosons to be f_0 = 0.669 +- 0.102 [ +- 0.078 (stat.) +- 0.065 (syst.)] and f_+ = 0.023 +- 0.053 [+- 0.041 (stat.) +- 0.034 (syst.)], respectively. This result is consistent at the 98% level with the standard model. A measurement with f_0 fixed to the value from the standard model yields f_+ = 0.010 +- 0.037 [+- 0.022 (stat.) +- 0.030 (syst.) ].

The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a $b$ quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ($\tildeν$), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set in the the ($M_{\tilde{t}_1}$,$M_{\tildeν}$) mass plane.

The result is Gamma_t = 1.99 +0.69 -0.55 GeV, which translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau_t = (3.3 +1.3 -0.9) x 10^-25 s. Assuming a high mass fourth generation b' quark and unitarity of the four-generation quark-mixing matrix, we set the first upper limit on |Vtb'| < 0.63 at 95% C.L.

MSSM SUSY Searches at LEP2
Authors:
Ia Iashvili
Abstract:
The status of SUSY searches at LEP2 up to centre-of-mass energy of 202 GeV is presented. Search strategies for sleptons, squarks, charginos and neutralinos are discussed in the framework of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with R-parity conservation. With no indication for the production of these particles new limits are set on their masses.

This work summarizes and puts in an overall perspective studies done within CMS concerning the discovery potential for squarks and gluinos, sleptons, charginos and neutralinos, SUSY dark matter, lightest Higgs, sparticle mass determination methods and the detector design optimisation in view of SUSY searches. It represents the status of our understanding of these subjects as of Summer 1997.
As a benchmark model we used the minimal supergravity-inspired super- symmetric standard model (mSUGRA) with a stable LSP. Discovery of SUSY at the LHC should be relatively straightforward. It may occur through the observation of a large excesses of events in missing E_T + jets, or with one or more isolated leptons. An excess of trilepton events or of isolated dileptons with E_T^miss, exhibiting a characteristic signature in the l^+l^- invariant mass distribution could also be the first manifestation of SUSY production. Squark and gluino production may represent a copious source of Higgs bosons through cascade decays. The lightest SUSY Higgs h->bbbar may be reconstructed with a signal/background ratio of order 1. The lightest supersymmetric particle of SUSY models with conserved R-parity represents a very good candidate for the cosmological dark matter. The region of parameter space where this is true is well-covered by our searches, at least for tan(beta)=2.
If supersymmetry exists at electroweak scale it could hardly escape detection in CMS, and the study of supersymmetry will form a central part of our physics program.
