This article introduces an energy and spectral efficient multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) transmission scheme designed for the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks. The approach involves connecting each receiving radio frequency (RF) chain with multiple antenna elements and conducting sample-level adjustments for receiving beamforming patterns. The proposed system architecture and the dedicated signal processing methods enable the scheme to transmit a bigger number of parallel data streams than the number of receiving RF chains, achieving a spectral efficiency performance close to that of a fully digital (FD) MIMO system with the same number of antenna elements, each equipped with an RF chain. We refer to this system as a ''pseudo MIMO'' system due to its ability to mimic the functionality of additional invisible RF chains. The article begins with introducing the underlying principles of pseudo MIMO and discussing potential hardware architectures for its implementation. We then highlight several advantages of integrating pseudo MIMO into next-generation wireless networks. To demonstrate the superiority of our proposed pseudo MIMO transmission scheme to conventional MIMO systems, simulation results are presented. Additionally, we validate the feasibility of this new scheme by building the first pseudo MIMO prototype. Furthermore, we present some key challenges and outline potential directions for future research.

Web 3.0 opens the world of new existence of the crypto-network-entity, which is independently defined by the public key pairs for entities and the connection to the Web 3.0 cyberspace. In this paper, we first discover a spacetime coordinate system based on fractal polytope in any dimensions with discrete time offered by blockchain and consensus. Second, the novel network entities and functions are defined to make use of hyperdimensional deterministic switching and routing protocols and blockchain-enabled mutual authentication. In addition to spacetime network architecture, we also define a multi-tier identity scheme which extends the native Web 3.0 crypto-network-entity to outer cyber and physical world, offering legal-compliant anonymity and linkability to all derived identifiers of entities. In this way, we unify the holistic Web 3.0 network based on persistent spacetime and its entity extension to our cyber and physical world.

The realization of open-source-defined wireless networks in the telecommunication domain is accomplished through the fifth-generation network (5G). In contrast to its predecessors (3G and 4G), the 5G network can support a wide variety of heterogeneous use cases with challenging requirements from both the Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT). The future sixth-generation (6G) network will not only extend 5G capabilities but also innovate new functionalities to address emerging academic and engineering challenges. The research community has identified these challenges could be overcome by open-source-defined wireless networks, which is based on open-source software and hardware. In this survey, we present an overview of different aspects of open-source-defined wireless networks, comprising motivation, frameworks, key technologies, and implementation. We start by introducing the motivation and explore several frameworks with classification into three different categories: black-box, grey-box, and white-box. We review research efforts related to open-source-defined Core Network (CN), Radio Access Network (RAN), Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), the capabilities of security threats, open-source hardware, and various implementations, including testbeds. The last but most important in this survey, lessons learned, future research direction, open research issues, pitfalls, and limitations of existing surveys on open-source wireless networks are included to motivate and encourage future research.

The detection and characterization of exoplanets and brown dwarfs (BDs) around massive AF-type stars is essential to investigate and constrain the impact of stellar mass on planet properties. However, such targets are still poorly explored in radial velocity (RV) surveys because they only feature a small number of stellar lines and those are usually broadened and blended by stellar rotation as well as stellar jitter. As a result, the available information about the formation and evolution of planets and BDs around hot stars is limited. We aim to increase the sample and precisely measure the masses and eccentricities of giant planets and BDs transiting AF-type stars detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We followed bright (V < 12 mag) stars with $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ > 6200 K that host giant companions (R > 7 $\mathrm{R_{\rm \oplus}}$) using ground-based photometric observations as well as high precision RV measurements from the CORALIE, CHIRON, TRES, FEROS, and MINERVA-Australis spectrographs. In the context, we present the discovery of three BD companions, TOI-629b, TOI-1982b, and TOI-2543b, and one massive planet, TOI-1107b. From the joint analysis we find the BDs have masses between 66 and 68 $\mathrm{M_{\rm Jup}}$, periods between 7.54 and 17.17 days, and radii between 0.95 and 1.11 $\mathrm{R_{\rm Jup}}$. The hot Jupiter TOI-1107b has an orbital period of 4.08 days, a radius of 1.30 $\mathrm{R_{\rm Jup}}$, and a mass of 3.35 $\mathrm{M_{\rm Jup}}$. As a by-product of this program, we identified four low-mass eclipsing components (TOI-288b, TOI-446b, TOI-478b, and TOI-764b). Both TOI-1107b and TOI-1982b present an anomalously inflated radius with respect to the age of these systems. TOI-629 is among the hottest stars with a known transiting brown dwarf. TOI-629b and TOI-1982b are among the most eccentric brown dwarfs.

This work performs the statistical QoS analysis of a Rician block-fading reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted D2D link in which the transmit node operates under delay QoS constraints. First, we perform mode selection for the D2D link, in which the D2D pair can either communicate directly by relaying data from RISs or through a base station (BS). Next, we provide closed-form expressions for the effective capacity (EC) of the RIS-assisted D2D link. When channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available, the transmit D2D node communicates with the variable rate $r_t(n)$ (adjustable according to the channel conditions); otherwise, it uses a fixed rate $r_t$. It allows us to model the RIS-assisted D2D link as a Markov system in both cases. We also extend our analysis to overlay and underlay D2D settings. To improve the throughput of the RIS-assisted D2D link when CSIT is unknown, we use the HARQ retransmission scheme and provide the EC analysis of the HARQ-enabled RIS-assisted D2D link. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that: i) the EC increases with an increase in RIS elements, ii) the EC decreases when strict QoS constraints are imposed at the transmit node, iii) the EC decreases with an increase in the variance of the path loss estimation error, iv) the EC increases with an increase in the probability of ON states, v) EC increases by using HARQ when CSIT is unknown, and it can reach up to $5\times$ the usual EC (with no HARQ and without CSIT) by using the optimal number of retransmissions.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is capable of meeting the challenging requirements of next-generation networks, e.g., 6G, as a benefit of providing computing and caching capabilities in the close proximity of the users. However, the traditional MEC architecture relies on specialized hardware and its bespoke software functions are closely integrated with the hardware, hence it is too rigid for supporting the rapidly evolving scenarios in the face of the demanding requirements of 6G. As a remedy, we conceive the compelling concept of open-source cellular networking and intrinsically amalgamate it with MEC, which is defined by open-source software running on general-purpose hardware platforms. Specifically, an open-source MEC (OS-MEC) scheme is presented relying on a pair of core principles: the decoupling of the MEC functions and resources from each other with the aid of network function virtualization (NFV); as well as the reconfiguration of the disaggregated MEC functions and resources into customized edge instances. This philosophy allows operators to adaptively customize their users' networks. Then, we develop improved networking functions for OS-MEC decoupling and discuss both its key components as well as the process of OS-MEC reconfiguration. The typical use cases of the proposed OS-MEC scheme are characterized with the aid of a small-scale test network. Finally, we discuss some of the potential open-source-related technical challenges when facing 6G.

In this paper, Blockchain-enabled Radio Access Networks (BE-RAN) is proposed as a novel decentralized RAN architecture to facilitate enhanced security and privacy on identification and authentication. It can offer user-centric identity management for User Equipment (UE) and RAN elements, and enable mutual authentication to all entities while enabling on-demand point-to-point communication with accountable billing service add-on on public network. Also, a potential operating model with thorough decentralization of RAN is envisioned. The paper also proposed a distributed privacy-preserving P2P communication approach, as one of the core use cases for future mobile networks, is presented as an essential complement to the existing core network-based security and privacy management. The results show that BE-RAN significantly improves communication and computation overheads compared to the existing communication authentication protocols.

LOCNES has been designed to obtain high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of the Sun as a star with an accurate wavelength calibration through molecular-band cells. This is an entirely new area of investigation that will provide timely results to improve the search of telluric planets with NIR spectrographs such as iSHELL, CARMENES, and GIANO-B. We will extract several disc-integrated activity indicators and average magnetic field measurements for the Sun in the NIR. Eventually, they will be correlated with both the RV of the Sun-as-a -star and the resolved images of the solar disc in visible and NIR. Such an approach will allow for a better understanding of the origin of activity-induced RV variations in the two spectral domains and will help in improving the techniques for their corrections. In this paper, we outline the science drivers for the LOCNES project and its first commissioning results.

In order to provide better-performing and cost-efficient services, network slicing involves challenging technical issues and urgently looks forward to intelligent innovations to make the resource management consistent with users' activities per slice. In that regard, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), which focuses on how to interact with the environment by trying alternative actions and reinforcing the tendency actions producing more rewarding consequences, is assumed to be a promising solution. In this paper, after briefly reviewing the fundamental concepts of DRL, we investigate the application of DRL in solving some typical resource management for network slicing scenarios, which include radio resource slicing and priority-based core network slicing, and demonstrate the advantage of DRL over several competing schemes through extensive simulations. Finally, we also discuss the possible challenges to apply DRL in network slicing from a general perspective.

However, beam selection requires the base station to acquire the accurate information of beamspace channel. This is a challenging task, as the size of beamspace channel is large while the number of RF chains is limited. In this paper, we investigate the beamspace channel estimation problem in mmWave massive MIMO systems with lens antenna array. Specifically, we first design an adaptive selecting network for mmWave massive MIMO systems with lens antenna array, and based on this network, we further formulate the beamspace channel estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem. Then, by fully utilizing the structural characteristics of mmWave beamspace channel, we propose a support detection (SD)-based channel estimation scheme with reliable performance and low pilot overhead. Finally, the performance and complexity analyses are provided to prove that the proposed SD-based channel estimation scheme can estimate the support of sparse beamspace channel with comparable or higher accuracy than conventional schemes. Simulation results verify that the proposed SD-based channel estimation scheme outperforms conventional schemes and enjoys satisfying accuracy, even in the low SNR region as the structural characteristics of beamspace channel can be exploited.

However, to achieve the capacityapproaching performance, beam selection requires the accurate information of beamspace channel of large size, which is challenging, especially when the number of RF chains is limited. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a reliable support detection (SD)-based channel estimation scheme. Specifically, we propose to decompose the total beamspace channel estimation problem into a series of sub-problems, each of which only considers one sparse channel component. For each channel component, we first reliably detect its support by utilizing the structural characteristics of mmWave beamspace channel. Then, the influence of this channel component is removed from the total beamspace channel estimation problem. After the supports of all channel components have been detected, the nonzero elements of the sparse beamspace channel can be estimated with low pilot overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed SD-based channel estimation outperforms conventional schemes and enjoys satisfying accuracy, even in the low SNR region.

However, most of hybrid precoding schemes focus on the full-array structure, which involves a high complexity. In this paper, we propose a near-optimal iterative hybrid precoding scheme based on the more realistic subarray structure with low complexity. We first decompose the complicated capacity optimization problem into a series of ones easier to be handled by considering each antenna array one by one. Then we optimize the achievable capacity of each antenna array from the first one to the last one by utilizing the idea of successive interference cancelation (SIC), which is realized in an iterative procedure that is easy to be parallelized. It is shown that the proposed hybrid precoding scheme can achieve better performance than other recently proposed hybrid precoding schemes, while it also enjoys an acceptable computational complexity.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO will likely use hybrid analog and digital precoding, which uses a small number of RF chains to avoid energy consumption associated with mixed signal components like analog-to-digital components not to mention baseband processing complexity. However, most hybrid precoding techniques consider a fully-connected architecture requiring a large number of phase shifters, which is also energyintensive. In this paper, we focus on the more energy-efficient hybrid precoding with sub-connected architecture, and propose a successive interference cancelation (SIC)-based hybrid precoding with near-optimal performance and low complexity. Inspired by the idea of SIC for multi-user signal detection, we first propose to decompose the total achievable rate optimization problem with non-convex constraints into a series of simple sub-rate optimization problems, each of which only considers one sub-antenna array. Then, we prove that maximizing the achievable sub-rate of each sub-antenna array is equivalent to simply seeking a precoding vector sufficiently close (in terms of Euclidean distance) to the unconstrained optimal solution. Finally, we propose a low-complexity algorithm to realize SICbased hybrid precoding, which can avoid the need for the singular value decomposition (SVD) and matrix inversion. Complexity evaluation shows that the complexity of SIC-based hybrid precoding is only about 10% as complex as that of the recently proposed spatially sparse precoding in typical mmWave MIMO systems. Simulation results verify the near-optimal performance of SIC-based hybrid precoding.

Linear precoding techniques can achieve near- optimal capacity due to the special channel property in down- link massive MIMO systems, but involve high complexity since complicated matrix inversion of large size is required. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity linear precoding scheme based on the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method. The proposed scheme can achieve the capacity-approaching performance of the classical linear precoding schemes in an iterative way without complicated matrix inversion, which can reduce the overall complexity by one order of magnitude. The performance guarantee of the proposed GS-based precoding is analyzed from the following three aspects. At first, we prove that GS-based precoding satisfies the transmit power constraint. Then, we prove that GS-based precoding enjoys a faster convergence rate than the recently proposed Neumann-based precoding. At last, the convergence rate achieved by GS-based precoding is quantified, which reveals that GS-based precoding converges faster with the increasing number of BS antennas. To further accelerate the convergence rate and reduce the complexity, we propose a zone-based initial solution to GS-based precoding, which is much closer to the final solution than the traditional initial solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms Neumann- based precoding, and achieves the exact capacity-approaching performance of the classical linear precoding schemes with only a small number of iterations both in Rayleigh fading channels and spatially correlated channels.

To further accelerate the convergence rate and reduce the complexity, we propose a diagonal-approximate initial solution to the GS method, which is much closer to the final solution than the traditional zero-vector initial solution. We also propose a approximated method to compute log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for soft channel decoding with a negligible performance loss. The analysis shows that the proposed GS-based algorithm can reduce the computational complexity from O(K^3) to O(K^2), where K is the number of users. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm outperforms the recently proposed Neumann series approximation algorithm, and achieves the near-optimal performance of the classical MMSE algorithm with a small number of iterations.

Mobile traffic is projected to increase 1000 times from 2010 to 2020. This poses significant challenges on the 5th generation (5G) wireless communication system design, including network structure, air interface, key transmission schemes, multiple access, and duplexing schemes. In this paper, full duplex networking issues are discussed, aiming to provide some insights on the design and possible future deployment for 5G. Particularly, the interference scenarios in full duplex are analyzed, followed by discussions on several candidate interference mitigation approaches, interference proof frame structures, transceiver structures for channel reciprocity recovery, and super full duplex base station where each sector operates in time division duplex (TDD) mode. The extension of TDD and frequency division duplex (FDD) to full duplex is also examined. It is anticipated that with future standardization and deployment of full duplex systems, TDD and FDD will be harmoniously integrated, supporting all the existing half duplex mobile phones efficiently, and leading to a substantially enhanced 5G system performance.
