We perform an experimental investigation of Quantum Discord with Spin-Orbit X-states. These states are prepared through the incoherent superposition of different laser beans, where a two-level system is encoded in polarization and the first-order Hermitian-Gaussian modes, as proposed in Phys. Rev. A 103,0022411 (2022). We characterize different classes of spin-orbit X-states by performing an all-optical tomography for polarization and first-order transverse mode degrees of freedom. We also perform a study on the dependence of Discord with respect to the Fidelity of spin-orbit modes, revealing that Discord is very sensitive to incoherent noise. Our experimental results align with the theoretical predictions of Quantum Discord when accounting for the effect of fidelity. These results reinforce the spin-orbit modes as an important platform for quantum information processing. On the other hand, the need of astigmatic optical elements to implement unitary operations required by quantum information protocols implies in a loss of fidelity and quantum correlations. Alternative methods to manipulate spin-orbit modes are welcome.

We propose a procedure to identify and classify genuine tripartite entanglement in pure 3-qubit states via the Activated Bipartite Entanglement (ABE), which is defined here as the difference between the Entanglement of Assistance and the Entanglement of Formation. We show that for pure states belonging to one of the two inequivalent classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, i.e., GHZ or W states, the ABE is always greater than zero. For separable and biseparable states it is always null. In addition, our approach is capable to distinguish between genuine tripartite entangled states, those belonging to the GHZ class from those belonging to the W class. We also present an experimental proposal, by using linear optical circuits and internal degrees of freedom of a single photon, to measure the ABE and to verify the characterization via activated entanglement. The circuit simulation shows an excellent agreement with theoretical prediction for a wide class of GHZ and W states.

The Solovay-Kitaev theorem allows us to approximate any single-qubit gate to arbitrary accuracy with a finite sequence of fundamental operations from a universal set of gates. Inspired by this decomposition, we present a quantum channel simulator capable of implementing any completely positive trace-preserving map. Our realization consists of one ancillary qubit, encoded in the transverse mode of a laser beam (orbital degree of freedom), one qubit system, encoded in its polarization (spin), one spin-orbit CNOT gate and four single-qubit operations performed with prisms and polarization components. Our results describe the implementation of arbitrary single-qubit channels on the photon polarization using the transverse mode as the ancillary qubit.

We introduce both a theoretical and an experimental scheme for simulating a quantum thermal engine through an all-optical approach, with the behavior of the working substance and the thermal reservoirs implemented via internal degrees of freedom of a single photon. By using the polarization and propagation path, we encode two quantum bits and then implement the thermodynamical steps of an Otto cycle. To illustrate the feasibility of our proposal, we experimentally realize such simulation through an intense laser beam, evaluating heat and work at each individual step of the thermodynamical cycle. In addition, from the analysis of the entropy production during the entire cycle, we can study the amount of quantum friction produced in the Otto cycle as a function of the difference of temperature between hot and cold reservoirs. Our paper constitutes, therefore, an all-optical-based thermal machine simulation and opens perspectives for other optical simulations in quantum thermodynamics.

Qubits are encoded on polarization and transverse modes of an intense laser beam. A spin-orbit non-separable mode was produced by means of a radial polarization converter (S-plate). The results show that contextuality can be investigated by using spin-orbit modes in a simple way, corroborating recent works stating that such system can emulate single-photon experiments. Additionally, an improvement in the non-separable mode preparation allowed us to observe a greater violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for such system. The results are in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions of quantum mechanics.

The topological phase acquired by vector vortex optical beams is investigated. Under local unitary operations on their polarization and transverse degrees of freedom, the vector vortices can only acquire discrete geometric phase values, 0 or $π\,$, associated with closed paths belonging to different homotopy classes on the SO(3) manifold. These discrete values are demonstrated through interferometric measurements and the spin-orbit mode separability is associated to the visibility of the interference patterns. The local unitary operations performed on the vector vortices involved both polarization and transverse mode transformations with birefringent wave plates and astigmatic mode converters. The experimental results agree with our theoretical simulations and generalize our previous results obtained with polarization transformations only.

The quantum mechanical approach to the well known prisoners dilemma, one of the basic examples to illustrate the concepts of Game Theory, is implemented with a classical optical resource, nonquantum entanglement between spin and orbital degrees of freedom of laser modes. The concept of entanglement is crucial in the quantum version of the game, which brings novel features with a richer universe of strategies. As we show, this richness can be achieved in a quite unexpected context, namely that of paraxial spin-orbit modes in classical optics.

As the usual Bell's inequality can be violated for entangled two-qubit quantum states, we show both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed spin-orbit inequality criterion can be violated for non-separable modes. A discussion on the classical-quantum transition is also presented.

Moiré patterns are produced when two periodic structures with different spatial frequencies are superposed. The transmission of the resulting structure gives rise to spatial beatings which are called moiré fringes. In classical optics, the interest in moiré fringes comes from the fact that the spatial beating given by the frequency difference gives information about details(high spatial frequency) of a given spatial structure. We show that moiré fringes can also arise in the spatial distribution of the coincidence count rate of twin photons from the parametric down-conversion, when spatial structures with different frequencies are placed in the path of each one of the twin beams. In other words,we demonstrate how moiré fringes can arise from quantum images.
