This paper considers antenna impedance estimation based on training sequences at MIMO receivers. The goal is to firstly leverage extensive resources available in most wireless systems for channel estimation to estimate antenna impedance in real-time. We assume the receiver switches its impedance in a predetermined fashion during each training sequence. Based on voltage observation across the load, a classical estimation framework is developed incorporating the Rayleigh fading assumption. We then derive in closed-form a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator under i.i.d. fading and show this same ML estimator is a method of moments (MM) estimator in correlated channels. Numerical results suggest a fast algorithm, i.e., MLE in i.i.d. fading and the MM estimator in correlated fading, that estimates the unknown antenna impedance in real-time for all Rayleigh fading channels.

Impedance matching between receive antenna and front-end significantly impacts channel capacity in wireless channels. To implement capacity-optimal matching, the receiver must know the antenna impedance. But oftentimes this impedance varies with loading conditions in the antenna near-field. To mitigate this variation, several authors have proposed antenna impedance estimation techniques. However, the optimality of these techniques remains unclear. In this paper, we consider antenna impedance estimation at MISO receivers over correlated Rayleigh fading channels.
We derive in closed-form the optimal ML estimator under i.i.d. fading and then show it can be found via a scalar optimization in generally correlated fading channels. Numerical results suggest a computationally efficient, principal-components approach that estimates antenna impedance in real-time for all Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, ergodic capacity can be significantly boosted at originally poorly matched receivers with adaptive matching using our proposed approach.

Abstract:
This paper considers a hybrid approach to joint estimation of channel information and antenna impedance, for single-input, single-output channels. Based on observation of training sequences via synchronously switched load at the receiver, we derive joint maximum a posteriori and maximum-likelihood (MAP/ML) estimators for channel and impedance over multiple packets. We investigate important propert…

Based on observation of training sequences via synchronously switched load at the receiver, we derive joint maximum a posteriori and maximum-likelihood (MAP/ML) estimators for channel and impedance over multiple packets. We investigate important properties of these estimators, e.g., bias and efficiency. We also explore the performance of these estimators through numerical examples.

In order to support multiple antennas on compact wireless devices, transceivers are often designed with matching networks that compensate for mutual coupling. Some works have suggested that when optimal matching is applied to such a system, performance at the center frequency can be improved at the expense of an apparent reduction in the system bandwidth. This paper addresses the question of how coupling impacts bandwidth in the context of circular arrays. It will be shown that mutual coupling creates eigen-modes (virtual antennas) with diverse frequency responses, using the standard matching techniques. We shall also demonstrate how common communications techniques such as Diversity-OFDM would need to be optimized in order to compensate for these effects.

Recently, the remarkable potential of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system was unveiled for its ability to provide spatial diversity or multiplexing gains. For MIMO diversity schemes, it is already known that. by the optimal antenna selection maximizing the post-processing signal-to-noise ratio, the diversity order of the full system can be maintained. On the other hand, the diversity order achieved by antenna selection in spatial multiplexing systems, especially those exploiting practical coding and decoding schemes, has not been rigorously analyzed thus far. In this paper, from a geometric standpoint, we propose a new framework for theoretically analyzing the diversity order achieved by transmit antenna selection for separately encoded spatial multiplexing systems with linear and decision-feedback receivers. We rigorously show that a diversity order of (Nt-1)(Nr-1) can be achieved for an Nr by Nt SM system when L=2 antennas are selected from the transmit side; while for L>2 scenarios, we give bounds for the achievable diversity order and show that the optimal diversity order is at least (Nt-L+1)(Nr-L+1) . Furthermore, the same geometrical approach can be used to evaluate the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curves for the considered spatial multiplexing systems with transmit antenna selection.
