Abstract:
Motivated by the increasing availability of data of functional nature, we develop a general probabilistic and statistical framework for extremes of regularly varying random elements $X$ in $L^2[0,1]$. Motivated by the increasing availability of data of functional nature, we develop a general probabilistic and statistical framework for extremes of regularly varying random elements $X$ in $L^2[0,1]$. We place ourselves in a Peaks-Over-Threshold framework where a functional extreme is defined as an observation $X$ whose $L^2$-norm $\|X\|$ is comparatively large. Our goal is to propose a dimension reduction framework resulting into finite dimensional projections for such extreme observations. Our contribution is double. First, we investigate the notion of Regular Variation for random quantities valued in a general separable Hilbert space, for which we propose a novel concrete characterization involving solely stochastic convergence of real-valued random variables. Second, we propose a notion of functional Principal Component Analysis (PCA) accounting for the principal `directions' of functional extremes. We investigate the statistical properties of the empirical covariance operator of the angular component of extreme functions, by upper-bounding the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the estimation error for finite sample sizes. Numerical experiments with simulated and real data illustrate this work.

The statistical learning problem consists in building a predictive function $\hat{f}$ based on independent copies of $(X,Y)$ so that $Y$ is approximated by $\hat{f}(X)$ with minimum (squared) error. Motivated by various applications, special attention is paid here to the case of extreme (i.e. very large) observations $X$. Because of their rarity, the contributions of such observations to the (empirical) error is negligible, and the predictive performance of empirical risk minimizers can be consequently very poor in extreme regions. In this paper, we develop a general framework for regression on extremes. Under appropriate regular variation assumptions regarding the pair $(X,Y)$, we show that an asymptotic notion of risk can be tailored to summarize appropriately predictive performance in extreme regions. It is also proved that minimization of an empirical and nonasymptotic version of this 'extreme risk', based on a fraction of the largest observations solely, yields good generalization capacity. In addition, numerical results providing strong empirical evidence of the relevance of the approach proposed are displayed.

This line is of primary importance for laser cooling applications. In addition, an experimental value of the field and specific mass shift coefficients of the transition is reported as well as the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling constant $A$ of the transition excited state in $^{57}$Fe, namely $A(3d^74p \,\, z \, {}^5\!G^o_6)=31.241(48)$ MHz. The measurements were carried out by means of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy performed on an isotope-enriched iron atomic beam. All measured frequency shifts are reported with uncertainties below the third percent level.

On Gaussian Brunn-Minkowski inequalities

Abstract:
In this paper, we are interested in Gaussian versions of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We prove in a streamlined way a semigroup version of the Ehrard inequality for $m$ Borel or convex sets based on a previous work by Borell. Our method also allows us to have semigroup proofs of the geometric Brascamp-Lieb inequality and of the reverse one which follow exactly the same lines.

For a given orthonormal basis $(f_n)$ on a probability measure space, we want to describe all Markov operators which have the $f_n$ as eigenvectors. We introduce for that what we call the hypergroup property. We study this property in three different cases. On finite sets, this property appears as the dual of the GKS property linked with correlation inequalities in statistical mechanics. The representation theory of groups provides generic examples where these two properties are satisfied, although this group structure is not necessary in general. The hypergroup property also holds for Sturm--Liouville bases associated with log-concave symmetric measures on a compact interval, as stated in Achour--Trimèche's theorem. We give some criteria to relax this symmetry condition in view of extensions to a more general context. In the case of Jacobi polynomials with non-symmetric parameters, the hypergroup property is nothing else than Gasper's theorem. The proof we present is based on a natural interpretation of these polynomials as harmonic functions and is related to analysis on spheres. The proof relies on the representation of the polynomials as the moments of a complex variable.
