Macroscopic phase coherence in superconductors enables quantum interference and phase manipulation at realistic device length scales. Numerous superconducting electronic devices are based on the modulation of the supercurrent in superconducting loops. While the overall behavior of symmetric superconducting loops have been studied, the effects of asymmetries in such devices remain under-explored and poorly understood. Here we report on an experimental and theoretical study of the flux modulation of the persistent current in a doubly-connected asymmetric aluminum nanowire loop. A model considering the length and electronic cross-section asymmetries in the loop provides a quantitative account of the observations. Comparison with experiments give essential parameters such as persistent and critical currents as well as the amount of asymmetry which can provide feedback into the design of superconducting quantum devices.

Abstract:
The Nd1-xCexCoIn5 alloys evolve from local moment magnetism (x = 0) to heavy fermion superconductivity (x =1). Magnetic order is observed over a broad range of x. For a substantial range of x (0.83 <= x <= 0.95) in the temperature - composition phase diagram we find that superconductivity may coexist with spin - density wave magnetic order at the Fermi surface. We show that a delicate balance be…

For a substantial range of x (0.83 <= x <= 0.95) in the temperature - composition phase diagram we find that superconductivity may coexist with spin - density wave magnetic order at the Fermi surface. We show that a delicate balance betwen superconducting and magnetic instabilities can be reversibly tuned by both the Ce/Nd ratio and magnetic field, offering a new and unique model electronic system.

Abstract:
Neutron scattering is used to probe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the d-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ (T$_{c}$=2.3 K). Superconductivity develops from a state with slow ($\hbarΓ$=0.3 $\pm$ 0.15 meV) commensurate (${\bf{Q_0}}$=(1/2,1/2,1/2)) antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and nearly isotropic spin correlations. The characteristic wavevector in CeCoIn$_{5}$ is the sa…

The characteristic wavevector in CeCoIn$_{5}$ is the same as CeIn$_{3}$ but differs from the incommensurate wavevector measured in antiferromagnetically ordered CeRhIn$_{5}$. A sharp spin resonance ($\hbarΓ<0.07$ meV) at $\hbar ω$ = 0.60 $\pm$ 0.03 meV develops in the superconducting state removing spectral weight from low-energy transfers. The presence of a resonance peak is indicative of strong coupling between f-electron magnetism and superconductivity and consistent with a d-wave gap order parameter satisfying $Δ({\bf q+Q_0})=-Δ({\bf q})$.

Abstract:
The mean square atomic displacement in hcp-phase solid He-4 has been measured in crystals with a molar volume of 21.3 cm^3. It is temperature independent from 1 K to 140 mK, with no evidence for an anomaly in the vicinity of the proposed supersolid transition. The mean square displacement is different for in-plane motions (0.122 +/- 0.001 A^(2)) and out-of-plane motions (0.150 +/- 0.001 A ^(2)).
