We assume that stars may undergo surface differential rotation to study its impact on the interpretation of $V\!\sin i$ and on the observed distribution $Φ(u)$ of ratios of true rotational velocities $u=V/V_\rm c$ ($V_\rm c$ is the equatorial critical velocity). We discuss some phenomena affecting the formation of spectral lines and their broadening, which can obliterate the information carried by $V\!\sin i$ concerning the actual stellar rotation. We studied the line broadening produced by several differential rotational laws, but adopted Maunder's expression $Ω(θ)=Ω_o(1+α\cos^2θ)$ as an attempt to account for all of these laws with the lowest possible number of free parameters. We studied the effect of the differential rotation parameter $α$ on the measured $V\!\sin i$ parameter and on the distribution $Φ(u)$ of ratios $u=V/V_\rm c$. We conclude that the inferred $V\!\sin i$ is smaller than implied by the actual equatorial linear rotation velocity $V_\rm eq$ if the stars rotate with $α<0$, but is larger if the stars have $α>0$. For a given $|α|$ the deviations of $V\!\sin i$ are larger when $α<0$. If the studied Be stars have on average $α<0$, the number of rotators with $V_\rm eq\simeq0.9V_\rm c$ is larger than expected from the observed distribution $Φ(u)$; if these stars have on average $α>0$, this number is lower than expected. We discuss seven phenomena that contribute either to narrow or broaden spectral lines, which blur the information on the rotation carried by $V\!\sin i$ and, in particular, to decide whether the Be phenomenon mostly rely on the critical rotation. We show that two-dimensional radiation transfer calculations are needed in rapid rotators to diagnose the stellar rotation more reliably.

The Be star 102719279 is an interesting target observed with CoRoT during two runs, giving us the possibility to study the stability of the detected frequencies and to search for any correlation with outburts, as it was recently found in the Be star HD 49330 (Huat et al. 2009). The light curve of the star 102719279 shows fadings, multiperiodicity, stable and transient frequencies, etc. The short-term variations of the light curve are probably produced by non-radial pulsations together with some material that is ejected from the star, which produces the transient frequency. It is should be noted that the two main frequencies are synchronized and have the maximum amplitude just before the outburst.

To contribute to this discussion, we analyse the photometric time series of the B8IVe star HD 50209 observed by the CoRoT mission in the seismology field.
We use standard Fourier techniques and linear and non-linear least squares fitting methods to analyse the CoRoT light curve. In addition, we applied detailed modelling of high-resolution spectra to obtain the fundamental physical parameters of the star.
We have found four frequencies which correspond to gravity modes with azimuthal order m=0,-1,-2,-3 with the same pulsational frequency in the co-rotating frame. We also found a rotational period with a frequency of 0.679 \cd (7.754 $μ$Hz).
HD 50209 is a pulsating Be star as expected from its position in the HR diagram, close to the SPB instability strip.

Using Spitzer/IRAC observations of a region to be observed by the CoRoT satellite, we have unraveled a new complex star-forming region at low metallicity in the outer Galaxy. We perform a study of S284 in order to outline the chain of events in this star-forming region. We used four-band Spitzer/IRAC photometry as well as Halpha imaging obtained with INT/WFC. Combining these data with the optical photometry obtained in the frame of CoRoTs preparation and the 2MASS catalog we analysed the properties and distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with point-like sources. We also studied the SEDs of regions of extended emission, complementing our dataset with IRAS and MSX data. We find that S284 is unique in several ways: it is very isolated at the end of a spiral arm and both the diffuse dust and ionized emission are remarkably symmetric. We have partially resolved the central clusters of the three bubbles present in this region. Despite the different scales present in its multiple-bubble morphology, our study points to a very narrow spread of ages among the powering high-mass clusters. In contrast, the particular sawtooth structure of the extended emission at the rim of each ionized bubble harbours either small lower-mass clusters with a younger stellar population or individual young reddened protostars. In particular, triggered star formation is considered to be at work in these regions.

Aims: We present accurate photometric time series of two Be stars: NW Ser and V1446 Aql. Both stars were observed at the Observatorio de Sierra Nevada (Granada) in July 2003 with an automatic four-channel Strömgren photometer. We also present a preliminary theoretical study showing that the periodic variations exhibited by these stars can be due to pulsation.
Methods: An exhaustive Fourier analysis together with a least-square fitting has been carried out on the time series for all four Strömgren bands. Several independent frequencies and non-periodic trends explain most of the variance. A theoretical non-adiabatic code applied to stellar models for these stars shows that g-modes are unstable.
Results: Both stars show rapid variations in amplitude, probably due to a beating phenomenon. Four significant frequencies have been detected for each star. Comparison of the observed amplitude ratios for each pulsational frequency with those calculated from theoretical pulsation codes allows us to estimate the pulsation modes associated with the different detected frequencies. NW Ser seems also to show unstable p-modes and thus could be one of the newly discovered $β$ Cephei and SPB hybrid stars. Further spectroscopic observations are planned to study the stability of the detected frequencies.

In this paper we develop a calculation code to account for the effects carried by fast rotation on the observed spectra of early-type stars. Stars are assumed to be in rigid rotation and the grid of plane-parallel model atmospheres used to represent the gravitational darkening are calculated by means of a non-LTE approach. Attention is paid on the relation between the apparent and parent non-rotating counterpart stellar fundamental parameters and apparent and true vsini parameters as a function of the rotation rate Omega/Omega_c, stellar mass and inclination angle. It is shown that omission of gravitational darkening in the analysis of chemical abundances of CNO elements can produce systematic overestimation or underestimation, depending on the lines used, rotational rate and inclination angle. The proximity of Be stars to the critical rotation is re-discussed by correcting not only the vsini of 130 Be stars, but also their effective temperature and gravity to account for stellar rotationally induced geometrical distortion and for the concomitant gravitational darkening effect. We concluded that the increase of the vsini estimate is accompanied by an even higher value of the stellar equatorial critical velocity, so that the most probable average rate of angular velocity of Be stars attains Omega/Omega_c ~ 0.88.
