The mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates remains one of the big challenges of condensed matter physics.High Tc cuprates crystallize into layered perovskite structure featuring copper oxygen octahedral coordination. Due to the Jahn Teller effect in combination with the strong static Coulomb interaction, the octahedra in high Tc cuprates are elongated along the c axis, leading to a 3dx2-y2 orbital at the top of the band structure wherein the doped holes reside. This scenario gives rise to two dimensional characteristics in high Tc cuprates that favor d wave pairing symmetry. Here we report superconductivity in a cuprate Ba2CuO4-y wherein the local octahedron is in a very exceptional compressed version. The Ba2CuO4-y compound was synthesized at high pressure at high temperatures, and shows bulk superconductivity with critical temperature Tc above 70 K at ambient conditions. This superconducting transition temperature is more than 30 K higher than the Tc for the isostructural counterparts based on classical La2CuO4. X-ray absorption measurements indicate the heavily doped nature of the Ba2CuO4-y superconductor. In compressed octahedron the 3d3z2-r2 orbital will be lifted above the 3dx2-y2 orbital, leading to significant three dimensional nature in addition to the conventional 3dx2-y2 orbital. This work sheds important new light on advancing our comprehensive understanding of the superconducting mechanism of high Tc in cuprate materials.

It is known that iron selenide superconductors exhibit unique characteristics distinct from iron pnicitides, especially in the electron-doped region. However, acomprehensive study of continuous carrier do** ang the corresponding crystal structures of FeSe is still lacking, mainly due to the difficulties in controlling the carrier density in bulk materials. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a new family of bulk Lix(C3H10N2)0.37FeSe, which features a continue superconducting dome harboring Lifshitz transition within the wide range of 0.06~0.68. We demonstrate that with electron-doped, the anion height of FeSe layers deviates lineraly away from the optimized values of pnictides and pressurized FeSe. This feature leads to anew superconducting zone with unique do** dependence of the electronic structures and strong orbital-selective electronic correlation. Optimal superconductivity is achieved when the Fe 3d t2g orbitals have almost the same intermediate electronic correlation strength, with moderate mass enhancement between 3~4 in the two separate superconducting zone. Our result shed light on archieving unified mechanism of superconductivity in iron-based materials.

A combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a pure antiferromagnetic stripe Rb$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1.5-σ}$S$_2$ is reported. A neutron diffraction experiment on a powder sample shows that a 98$\%$ volume fraction of the sample is in the antiferromagnetic stripe phase with rhombic iron vacancy order and a refined composition of Rb$_{0.66}$Fe$_{1.36}$S$_{2}$, and that only 2$\%$ of the sample is in the block antiferromagnetic phase with $\sqrt{5}\times \sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order. Furthermore, a neutron diffraction experiment on a single crystal shows that there is only a single phase with the stripe antiferromagnetic order with the refined composition of Rb$_{0.78}$Fe$_{1.35}$S$_2$, while the phase with block antiferromagnetic order is absent. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the same crystal with the pure stripe phase reveal that the electronic structure is gapped at the Fermi level with a gap larger than 0.325 eV. The data collectively demonstrates that the extra 10$\%$ iron vacancies in addition to the rhombic iron vacancy order effectively impede the formation of the block antiferromagnetic phase; the data also suggest that the stripe antiferromagnetic phase with rhombic iron vacancy order is a Mott insulator.

Magnetocaloric materials can be useful in magnetic refrigeration applications, but to be practical the magneto-refrigerant needs to have a very large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) near room temperature for modest applied fields (<2 Tesla) with small hysteresis and magnetostriction, and should have a complete magnetic transition, be inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. One system that may fulfill these requirements is MnxFe2-xP1-yGey, where a combined first-order structural and magnetic transition occurs between the high temperature paramagnetic and low temperature ferromagnetic phase. We have used neutron diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and magnetization measurements to study the effects of Mn and Ge location in the structure on the ordered magnetic moment, MCE, and hysteresis for a series of compositions of the system near optimal do**. The diffraction results indicate that the Mn ions located on the 3f site enhance the desirable properties, while those located on the 3g sites are detrimental. The entropy changes measured directly by calorimetry can exceed 40 J/kg-K. The phase fraction that transforms, hysteresis of the transition, and entropy change can be controlled by both the compositional homogeneity and the particle size, and an annealing procedure has been developed that substantially improves the performance of all three properties of the material. On the basis of these results we have identified a pathway to optimize the MCE properties of this system for magnetic refrigeration applications.

FeSe-derived superconductors show some unique behaviors relative to iron-pnictide superconductors, which are very helpful to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in high-Tc iron-based superconductors. The low-energy electronic structure of the heavily electron-doped AxFe2Se2 (A=K, Rb, Cs) demonstrates that interband scattering or Fermi surface nesting is not a necessary ingredient for the unconventional superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in the one-unit-cell FeSe on SrTiO3 substrate can reach as high as ~65 K, largely transcending the bulk Tc of all known iron-based superconductors. However, in the case of AxFe2Se2, the inter-grown antiferromagnetic insulating phase makes it difficult to study the underlying physics. Superconductors of alkali metal ions and NH3 molecules or organic-molecules intercalated FeSe and single layer or thin film FeSe on SrTiO3 substrate are extremely air-sensitive, which prevents the further investigation of their physical properties. Therefore, it is urgent to find a stable and accessible FeSe-derived superconductor for physical property measurements so as to study the underlying mechanism of superconductivity. Here, we report the air-stable superconductor (Li0.8Fe0.2)OHFeSe with high temperature superconductivity at ~40 K synthesized by a novel hydrothermal method. The crystal structure is unambiguously determined by the combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. It is also found that an antiferromagnetic order coexists with superconductivity in such new FeSe-derived superconductor. This novel synthetic route opens a new avenue for exploring other superconductors in the related systems. The combination of different structure characterization techniques helps to complementarily determine and understand the details of the complicated structures.

The complex structure and magnetism of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ was investigated by neutron scattering and EXAFS. Pr has an approximate doublet ground-state and the first excited state is a singlet. This overall crystal field level scheme is similar to metallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which is also reported here. While the B-site (Ru) is well ordered throughout, this is not the case for the A-site (Pr/Bi). A distribution of the Pr-O2 bond length indicates the Pr environment is not uniform even for $x=0$. The Bi environment is highly disordered ostensibly due to the 6s lone pairs on Bi$^{3+}$. Correspondingly we find the non-Kramers doublet ground state degeneracy otherwise anticipated for Pr in the pyrochlore structure is lifted so as to produce a quadrupolar singlet ground state with a spatially varying energy gap. For $x=0$, below T$_N$, the Ru sublattice orders antiferromagnetically, with propagation vector \textbf{k}= (0,0,0), as for Y$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$. No ordering associated with the Pr sublattice is observed down to 100 mK. The low energy magnetic response of Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$ features a broad spectrum of magnetic excitations associated with inhomogeneous splitting of the Pr quasi-doublet ground state. For $x=0$ ($x=0.97$) the spectrum is temperature dependent (independent). It appears disorder associated with Bi alloying enhances the inhomogeneous Pr crystal field level splitting so that inter-site interactions become irrelevant for $x=0.97$. The structural complexity for the A-site may be reflected in the hysteretic uniform magnetization of B-site ruthenium in the Néel phase.

For T<<T_N there is a $Δ=11(1)$ meV energy gap and a pronounced spectral maximum at 19.7 meV. We present thermodynamic and neutron data on Ni_3V_2O_8, a spin-1 system on a kagome staircase. The extreme degeneracy of the kagome antiferromagnet is lifted to produce two incommensurate phases at finite T - one amplitude modulated, the other helical - plus a commensurate canted antiferromagnet for T ->0. The H-T phase diagram is described by a model of competing first and second neighbor interactions with smaller anisotropic terms. Ni_3V_2O_8 thus provides an elegant example of order from sub leading interactions in a highly frustrated system
