At zero field, the sample with x = 0.06 shows a structural phase transition around T$_S$~100K, followed by a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition around T$_{SDW}$~30K. For x = 0.08, the structural phase transition is suppressed down to T$_S$~60K without a clear anomaly associated with the Fe-SDW transition, and superconductivity shows up at T$_C$~25K. At lower temperatures, both samples show a clear resistive peak around T$_N$~4K, which is associated with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition of Ce-4f electrons. Strikingly, zero resistance is recovered upon further lowering temperature below T$_N$ for x = 0.08. Moreover, we found that the AFM transition of Ce 4f-electrons at 4K hardly changes with applying a magnetic field up to 40T, even in the case of x = 0.08, where superconductivity has been partially suppressed at such a large field.

We report optical spectroscopic measurements on electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2. We show that the compounds in the normal state are not simple metals. The optical conductivity spectra contain, in addition to the free carrier response at low frequency, a temperature-dependent gap-like suppression at rather high energy scale near 0.6 eV. This suppression evolves with the As-Fe-As bond angle induced by electron- or hole-do**. Furthermore, the feature becomes much weaker in the Fe-chalcogenide compounds. We elaborate that the feature is caused by the strong Hund's rule coupling effect between the itinerant electrons and localized electron moment arising from the multiple Fe 3d orbitals. Our experiments demonstrate the coexistence of itinerant and localized electrons in iron-based compounds, which would then lead to a more comprehensive picture about the metallic magnetism in the materials.

Our findings support the itinerant origin of the antiferromagnetic transition in the FeAs-based system.

We present a combined optical spectroscopy and band structure calculation study on the compound across the transition. The study reveals that BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is a good metal with a rather high plasma frequency. The phase transition leads to a small reduction of conducting carriers. We identify that this reduction is caused by the removal of several small Fermi surface sheets contributed dominantly from the As-As bonding and Ni-As antibonding states.

This compound is found to undergo three successive phase transitions at around 52, 41, and 23 K, which correspond to structural, magnetic and superconducting transitions, respectively. A brief review of optical and Raman studies on the Fe-based superconductors is given, with special emphasis on the competing phenomenon in this system. Optical investigations on ReFeAsO (Re=rare-earth element) and AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=alkaline-earth metal) families provide clear evidence for the gap formation in the broken symmetry states, including the partial gaps in the spin-density wave states of parent compounds, and the pairing gaps in the superconducting states for doped compounds. Especially, the superconducting gap has an s-wave pairing lineshape in hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Optical phonons at zone center detected by Raman and infrared techniques are classified for several Fe-based compounds. Related issues, such as the electron-phonon coupling and the effect of spin-density wave and superconducting transitions on phonons, are also discussed. Meanwhile, open questions including the \emph{T}-dependent mid-infrared peak at 0.6-0.7 eV, electronic correlation, and the similarities/differences between high-\Tc cuprates and Fe-based superconductors are also briefly discussed. Important results from other experimental probes are compared with optical data to better understand the spin-density wave properties, the superconductivity, and the multi-band character in Fe-based compounds.

However, its physical properties are considerably different from other parent compounds of FeAs-based systems, presumably attributed to the presence of excess Fe ions. The charge transport is rather incoherent above the transition, and no clear signature of the gap is observed below the transition temperature. Strong impurity scattering effect exists also in Se-doped superconducting sample Fe$_{1.03}$Se$_{0.30}$Te$_{0.70}$, leading to a relatively low T$_c$ but a rather high upper critical field.

The recent discovery and subsequent developments of FeAs-based superconductors have presented novel challenges and opportunities in the quest for superconducting mechanisms in correlated-electron systems. Central issues of ongoing studies include interplay between superconductivity and magnetism as well as the nature of the pairing symmetry reflected in the superconducting energy gap. In the cuprate and RE(O,F)FeAs (RE = rare earth) systems, the superconducting phase appears without being accompanied by static magnetic order, except for narrow phase-separated regions at the border of phase boundaries. By muon spin relaxation measurements on single crystal specimens, here we show that superconductivity in the AFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Ca,Ba,Sr) systems, in both the cases of composition and pressure tunings, coexists with a strong static magnetic order in a partial volume fraction. The superfluid response from the remaining paramagnetic volume fraction of (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ exhibits a nearly linear variation in T at low temperatures, suggesting an anisotropic energy gap with line nodes and/or multi-gap effects.

We observe two low-energy interband transitions in the paramagnetic phase, which split into four peaks as the compound enters the ferromagnetic state. The band structure calculation indicates the four peaks are interband transitions to the spin up Cr e$_g$ states. We show that the peak splitting below the Curie temperature is \emph{not} due to the exchange splitting of spin up and down bands, but directly reflects a band broadening effect in Cr-derived states upon the spontaneous ferromagnetic ordering.

Both are found to be quite metallic with fairly large plasma frequencies at high temperature. Upon entering the spin-density-wave (SDW) state, formation of partial energy gaps was clearly observed with the presence of surprisingly two different energy scales. A large part of the Drude component was removed by the gap** of Fermi surfaces (FS). Meanwhile, the carrier scattering rate was even more dramatically reduced. We elaborate that the SDW instability is more likely to be driven by the FS nesting of itinerant electrons rather than a local-exchange mechanism.

We have successfully grown high quality single crystals of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ and A$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$(A=Sr, Ba) using flux method. The resistivity, specific heat and Hall coefficient have been measured. For parent compound SrFe$_2$As$_2$, an anisotropic resistivity with $ρ_c$ / $ρ_{ab}$ as large as 130 is obtained at low temperatures. A sharp drop in both in-plane and out-plane resistivity due to the SDW instability is observed below 200 K. The angular dependence of in-plane magnetoresistance shows 2-fold symmetry with field rotating within ab plane below SDW transition temperature. This is consistent with a stripe-type spin ordering in SDW state. In K doped A$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$(A=Sr. Ba), the SDW instability is suppressed and the superconductivity appears with T$_c$ above 35 K. The rather low anisotropy in upper critical field between H$\parallel$ab and H$\parallel$c indicates inter-plane coupling play an important role in hole doped Fe-based superconductors.

A series of layered CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs compounds with x=0 to 0.20 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to the LaOFeAs, the pure CeOFeAs shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 145 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. F-do** suppresses this instability and leads to the superconducting ground state. Most surprisingly, the superconducting transition temperature could reach as high as 41 K. The very high superconducting transition temperature strongly challenges the classic BCS theory based on the electron-phonon interaction. The very closeness of the superconducting phase to the spin-density-wave instability suggests that the magnetic fluctuations play a key role in the superconducting paring mechanism. The study also reveals that the Ce 4f electrons form local moments and ordered antiferromagnetically below 4 K, which could coexist with superconductivity.

The interplay between different ordered phases, such as superconducting, charge or spin ordered phases, is of central interest in condensed matter physics. The very recent discovery of superconductivity with a remarkable T$_c$= 26 K in Fe-based oxypnictide La(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs is a surprise to the scientific community\cite{Kamihara08}. The pure LaOFeAs itself is not superconducting but shows an anomaly near 150 K in both resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility. Here we provide combined experimental and theoretical evidences showing that the anomaly is caused by the spin-density-wave (SDW) instability, and electron-do** by F suppresses the SDW instability and recovers the superconductivity. Therefore, the La(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs offers an exciting new system showing competing orders in layered compounds.

Partial substitution of oxygen by fluorine increases the transition temperature to $\sim 3.8$ K. The LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$NiAs sample shows a sharp superconducting transition and a sharp specific heat jump at the critical temperature. The magnitude of the specific heat jump is much larger than that expected from the weak-coupling BCS theory, indicating that this superconductor is in the strong coupling regime. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the specific heat deviates strongly from the theoretical result for the single-band s- or d-wave superconductor, but shows some character of a multi-gap system.

We report an optical spectroscopy study on the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_{0.07}$TiSe$_2$. Consistent with the development from a semimetal or semiconductor with a very small indirect energy gap upon do** TiSe$_2$, it is found that the compound has a low carrier density. Most remarkably, the study reveals a substantial shift of the "screened" plasma edge in reflectance towards high energy with decreasing temperature. This phenomenon, rarely seen in metals, indicates either a sizeable increase of the conducting carrier concentration or/and a decrease of the effective mass of carriers with reducing temperature. We attribute the shift primarily to the later effect.

We report an infrared study on 1$T$-TiSe$_2$, the parent compound of the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$. Previous studies of this compound have not conclusively resolved whether it is a semimetal or a semiconductor: information that is important in determining the origin of its unconventional CDW transition. Here we present optical spectroscopy results that clearly reveal that the compound is metallic in both the high-temperature normal phase and the low-temperature CDW phase. The carrier scattering rate is dramatically different in the normal and CDW phases and the carrier density is found to change with temperature. We conclude that the observed properties can be explained within the scenario of an Overhauser-type CDW mechanism.

A clear gap feature was observed for 2$H$-TaS$_2$ when it undergoes a CDW transition. The existence of a Drude component in $σ$$_1$($ω$) below T$_{CDW}$ indicates that the Fermi surface of 2$H$-TaS$_2$ is only partially gapped in CDW state. The spectral evolution of two different Na$_x$TaS$_2$ crystals further confirms that the partial gap structure observed in 2$H$-TaS$_2$ has a CDW origin. The CDW mechanism for 2$H$-TaS$_2$, the competition between CDW and superconductivity in Na$_x$TaS$_2$ system are discussed.
