Self-organized bistability (SOB) stands as a critical behavior for the systems delicately adjusting themselves to the brink of bistability, characterized by a first-order transition. Its essence lies in the inherent ability of the system to undergo enduring shifts between the coexisting states, achieved through the self-regulation of a controlling parameter. Recently, SOB has been established in a scale-free network as a recurrent transition to a short-living state of global synchronization. Here, we embark on a theoretical exploration that extends the boundaries of the SOB concept on a higher-order network (implicitly embedded microscopically within a simplicial complex) while considering the limitations imposed by coupling constraints. By applying Ott-Antonsen dimensionality reduction in the thermodynamic limit to the higher-order network, we derive SOB requirements under coupling limits that are in good agreement with numerical simulations on systems of finite size. We use continuous synchronization diagrams and statistical data from spontaneous synchronized events to demonstrate the crucial role SOB plays in initiating and terminating temporary synchronized events. We show that under weak coupling consumption, these spontaneous occurrences closely resemble the statistical traits of the epileptic brain functioning.

A dynamical system approaching the first-order transition can exhibit a specific type of critical behavior known as self-organized bistability (SOB). It lies in the fact that the system can permanently switch between the coexisting states under the self-tuning of a control parameter. Many of these systems have a network organization that should be taken into account to understand the underlying processes in detail. In the present paper, we theoretically explore an extension of the SOB concept on the scale-free network under coupling constraints. As provided by the numerical simulations and mean-field approximation in the thermodynamic limit, SOB on scale-free networks originates from facilitated criticality reflected on both macro- and mesoscopic network scales. We establish that the appearance of switches is rooted in spatial self-organization and temporal self-similarity of the network's critical dynamics and replicates extreme properties of epileptic seizure recurrences. Our results, thus, indicate that the proposed conceptual model is suitable to deepen the understanding of emergent collective behavior behind neurological diseases.

Coherent activations of brain neuron networks underlay many physiological functions associated with various behavioral states. These synchronous fluctuations in the electrical activity of the brain are also referred to as brain rhythms. At the cellular level, the rhythmicity can be induced by various mechanisms of intrinsic oscillations in neurons or network circulation of excitation between synaptically coupled neurons. One of the specific mechanisms concerns the activity of brain astrocytes that accompany neurons and can coherently modulate synaptic contacts of neighboring neurons, synchronizing their activity. Recent studies have shown that coronavirus infection (Covid-19), entering the central nervous system and infecting astrocytes, causes various metabolic disorders. Specifically, Covid-19 can depress the synthesis of astrocytic glutamate and GABA. It is also known that in the postcovid state, patients may suffer from symptoms of anxiety and impaired cognitive functions, which may be a consequence of disturbed brain rhythms. We propose a mathematical model of a spiking neural network accompanied by astrocytes capable to generate quasi-synchronous rhythmic bursting discharges. The model predicts that if the astrocytes are infected, and the release of glutamate is depressed, then normal burst rhythmicity suffers dramatically. Interestingly, in some cases, the failure of network coherence may be intermittent with intervals of normal rhythmicity, or the synchronization can completely disappears.

Interaction within an ensemble of coupled nonlinear oscillators induces a variety of collective behaviors. One of the most fascinating is a chimera state which manifests the coexistence of spatially distinct populations of coherent and incoherent elements. Understanding of the emergent chimera behavior in controlled experiments or real systems requires a focus on the consideration of heterogeneous network models. In this study, we explore the transitions in a heterogeneous Kuramoto model under the monotonical increase of the coupling strength and specifically find that this system exhibits a frequency-modulated chimera-like pattern during the explosive transition to synchronization. We demonstrate that this specific dynamical regime originates from the interplay between (the evolved) attractively and repulsively coupled subpopulations. We also show that the above mentioned chimera-like state is induced under weakly non-local, small-world and sparse scale-free coupling and suppressed in globally coupled, strongly rewired and dense scale-free networks due to the emergence of the large-scale connections.

Progress in the creation of large scale, artificial quantum coherent structures demands the investigation of their nonequilibrium dynamics when strong interactions, even between remote parts, are non-perturbative. Analysis of multiparticle quantum correlations in a large system in the presence of decoherence and external driving is especially topical. Still, scaling behaviour of dynamics and related emergent phenomena are not yet well understood. We investigate how the dynamics of a driven system of several quantum elements (e.g., qubits or Rydberg atoms) changes with increasing number of elements. Surprisingly, a two-element system exhibits chaotic behaviours. For larger system sizes a highly stochastic, far from equilibrium, {\em hyperchaotic} regime emerges. Its complexity systematically scales with the size of the system, proportionally to the number of elements. Finally, we demonstrate that these chaotic dynamics can be efficiently controlled by a periodic driving field. The insights provided by our results indicate the possibility of a reduced description for the behaviour of a large quantum system in terms of the transitions between its qualitatively different dynamical regimes, which are controlled by a relatively small number of parameters, and may prove useful in the design, characterization and control of large artificial quantum structures.

We consider the rotational dynamics in an ensemble of globally coupled identical pendulums. This model is essentially a generalization of the standard Kuramoto model, which takes into account the inertia and the intrinsic nonlinearity of the community elements. There exists the wide variety of in-phase and out-of-phase regimes. Many of these states appear due to broken symmetry. In the case of small dissipation our theoretical analysis allows one to find the boundaries of the instability domain of in-phase rotational mode for ensembles with arbitrary number of pendulums, describe all arising out-of-phase rotation modes and study in detail their stability. For the system of three elements parameter sets corresponding to the unstable in-phase rotations we find a number of out-of-phase regimes and investigate their stability and bifurcations both analytically and numerically. As a result, we obtain a sufficiently detailed picture of the symmetry breaking and existence of various regular and chaotic states.

We introduce a practical and computationally not demanding technique for inferring interactions at various microscopic levels between the units of a network from the measurements and the processing of macroscopic signals. Starting from a network model of Kuramoto phase oscillators which evolve adaptively according to homophilic and homeostatic adaptive principles, we give evidence that the increase of synchronization within groups of nodes (and the corresponding formation of synchronous clusters) causes also the defragmentation of the wavelet energy spectrum of the macroscopic signal. Our methodology is then applied for getting a glance to the microscopic interactions occurring in a neurophysiological system, namely, in the thalamo-cortical neural network of an epileptic brain of a rat, where the group electrical activity is registered by means of multichannel EEG. We demonstrate that it is possible to infer the degree of interaction between the interconnected regions of the brain during different types of brain activities, and to estimate the regions' participation in the generation of the different levels of consciousness.

We show that these effects are the same type of dynamics observed under different conditions. The correctness of our conclusion is confirmed by the consideration of different sample systems, such as quadratic map, Van der Pol oscillator and Rossler system. Consideration of the problem concerning the upper boundary of the intermittent behavior also confirms the validity of the statement on the equivalence of type-I intermittency in the presence of noise and eyelet intermittency observed in the onset of phase synchronization.

If attractors of the drive and response systems have an infinitely large basin of attraction, generalized synchronization is shown to possess a great stability with respect to noise. The reasons of the revealed particularity are explained by means of the modified system approach [A.E. Hramov, A.A. Koronovskii, Phys. Rev. The main results are illustrated using the examples of unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators and discrete maps as well as spatially extended dynamical systems. The already known dependence of the mean length of the laminar phases on the criticality parameter [PRE 68 (2003) 036203] follows as a corollary of the carried out research. We also prove that this dependence obtained earlier under the assumption of the fixed form of the reinjection probability does not depend on the relaminarization properties, and, correspondingly, the obtained expression of the mean length of the laminar phases on the criticality parameter remains correct for different types of the reinjection probability.

SWD are known to originate from thalamo-cortical neuronal network that normally produce sleep spindle oscillations. Although both sleep spindles and SWD are considered as thalamo-cortical oscillations, functional relationship between them is still uncertain. The present study describes temporal dynamics of SWD and sleep spindles as determined in long-term EEG recordings in WAG/Rij rat model of absence epilepsy. It was found that non-linear dynamics of SWD fits well to the law of 'on-off intermittency'. Typical sleep spindles that occur during slow-wave sleep (SWS) also demonstrated 'on-off intermittency' behavior, in contrast to high-voltage spindles during intermediate sleep stage, whose dynamics was uncertain. This implies that both SWS sleep spindles and SWD are controlled by a system-level mechanism that is responsible for regulating circadian activity and/or sleep-wake transitions.

The spectrum of Lyapunov exponents is powerful tool for the analysis of the complex system dynamics. In the general framework of nonlinear dynamical systems a number of the numerical technics have been developed to obtain the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the complex temporal behavior of the systems with a few degree of freedom. Unfortunately, these methods can not apply directly to analysis of complex spatio-temporal dynamics in plasma devices which are characterized by the infinite phase space, since they are the spatially extended active media. In the present paper we propose the method for the calculation of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents (SLEs) for the spatially extended beam-plasma systems. The calculation technique is applied to the analysis of chaotic spatio-temporal oscillations in three different beam-plasma model: (1) simple plasma Pierce diode, (2) coupled Pierce diodes, and (3) electron-wave system with backward electromagnetic wave. We find an excellent agreement between the system dynamics and the behavior of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents. Along with the proposed method, the possible problems of SLEs calculation are also discussed. It is shown that for the wide class of the spatially extended systems the set of quantities included in the system state for SLEs calculation can be reduced using the appropriate feature of the plasma systems.

The azimuthal instability of the relativistic electron beam leading to the formation of the vortex electron structure in the system was found out. This instability is determined by the influence of the self-magnetic fields of the relativistic electron beam and it leads to the decrease of the critical value of the electron beam current (current when the non-stationary virtual cathode is formed in the drift space). The typical dependencies of the critical current on the external uniform magnetic field value were discovered. We show that resonant electron transport in semiconductor superlattices with an applied electric and tilted magnetic field can, surprisingly, become more pronounced as the lattice and conduction electron temperature increases from 4.2 K to room temperature and beyond. It has previously been demonstrated that at certain critical field parameters, the semiclassical trajectories of electrons in the lowest miniband of the superlattice change abruptly from fully localised to completely unbounded. The unbounded electron orbits propagate through intricate web patterns, known as stochastic webs, in phase space, which act as conduction channels for the electrons and produce a series of resonant peaks in the electron drift velocity versus electric field curves. Here, we show that increasing the lattice temperature strengthens these resonant peaks due to a subtle interplay between thermal population of the conduction channels and transport along them. This enhances both the electron drift velocity and the influence of the stochastic webs on the current-voltage characteristics, which we calculate by making self-consistent solutions of the coupled electron transport and Poisson equations throughout the superlattice. These solutions reveal that increasing the temperature also transforms the collective electron dynamics by changing both the threshold voltage required for the onset of self-sustained current oscillations, produced by propagating charge domains, and the oscillation frequency.

In this Letter we research the space charge limiting current value at which the oscillating virtual cathode is formed in the relativistic electron beam as a function of the external magnetic field guiding the beam electrons. It is shown that the space charge limiting (critical) current decreases with growth of the external magnetic field, and that there is an optimal induction value of the magnetic field at which the critical current for the onset of virtual cathode oscillations in the electron beam is minimum. For the strong external magnetic field the space charge limiting current corresponds to the analytical relation derived under the assumption that the motion of the electron beam is one-dimensional [High Power Microwave Sources. Artech House Microwave Library, 1987. Chapter~13]. Such behavior is explained by the characteristic features of the dynamics of electron space charge in the longitudinal and radial directions in the drift space at the different external magnetic fields.

Two types of phase synchronization (accordingly, two scenarios of breaking phase synchronization) between coupled stochastic oscillators are shown to exist depending on the discrepancy between the control parameters of interacting oscillators, as in the case of classical synchronization of periodic oscillators. If interacting stochastic oscillators are weakly detuned, the phase coherency of the attractors persists when phase synchronization breaks. Conversely, if the control parameters differ considerably, the chaotic attractor becomes phase-incoherent under the conditions of phase synchronization break.

In this article we report that there are two different types of destruction of the phase synchronization regime of chaotic oscillators depending on the parameter mismatch as well as in the case of the classical synchronization of periodic oscillators. When the parameter mismatch of the interacting chaotic oscillators is small enough the PS breaking takes place without the destruction of the phase coherence of chaotic attractors of oscillators. Alternatively, due to the large frequency detuning, the PS breaking is accomplished by loss of the phase coherence of the chaotic attractors.

Generalized synchronization is analyzed in unidirectionally coupled oscillatory systems exhibiting spatiotemporal chaotic behavior described by Ginzburg-Landau equations. Several types of coupling betweenthe systems are analyzed. The largest spatial Lyapunov exponent is proposed as a new characteristic of the state of a distributed system, and its calculation is described for a distributed oscillatory system. Partial generalized synchronization is introduced as a new type of chaotic synchronization in spatially nonuniform distributed systems. The physical mechanisms responsible for the onset of generalized chaotic synchronization in spatially distributed oscillatory systems are elucidated. It is shown that the onset of generalized chaotic synchronization is described by a modified Ginzburg-Landau equation with additional dissipation irrespective of the type of coupling. The effect of noise on the onset of a generalized synchronization regime in coupled distributed systems is analyzed.

The effect of the strength of the focusing magnetic field on chaotic dynamic processes occurring inan electron beam with a virtual cathode, as well as on the processes whereby the structures form in the beamand interact with each other, is studied by means of two-dimensional numerical simulations based on solving a self-consistent set of Vlasov-Maxwell equations. It is shown that, as the focusing magnetic field is decreased, the dynamics of an electron beam with a virtual cathode becomes more complicated due to the formation andinteraction of spatio-temporal longitudinal and transverse structures in the interaction region of a vircator. The optimum efficiency of the interaction of an electron beam with the electromagnetic field of the vircator isachieved at a comparatively weak external magnetic field and is determined by the fundamentally two-dimensional nature of the motion of the beam electrons near the virtual cathode.

The appearance of the chaotic synchronization regimes has been discovered for the coupled spatially extended beam-plasma Pierce systems. The coupling was introduced only on the right bound of each subsystem. It has been shown that with coupling increase the spatially extended beam-plasma systems show the transition from asynchronous behavior to the phase synchronization and then to the complete synchronization regime. For the consideration of the chaotic synchronization we used the concept of time scale synchronization described in work [Chaos, 14, 3 (2004) 603-610] and based on the introduction of the continuous set of phases of chaotic signal. In case of unidirectional coupling the generalized synchronization regime has been observed in the spatially extended beam-plasma systems. The generalized synchronization appearance mechanism has been analyzed by means of the offered modified system approach [Phys. Rev. E, 71, 6 (2005) 067201].
