This paper introduces a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm for generalized pattern search (GPS) algorithms. We introduce a quantum search step algorithm using amplitude amplification, which reduces the number of oracle calls needed during the search step from O(N) classical calls to O(N^(1/2)) quantum calls. This work addresses three fundamental issues with using a quantum search step with GPS. First we address the need to mark an improved mesh point, a requirement of the amplitude amplification algorithm. Second, we introduce a modified version of the amplitude amplification algorithm QSearch, which is guaranteed to terminate using a finite number of iterations. Third, we avoid disrupting the GPS algorithm's convergence by limiting the quantum algorithm to the search step.

We generalize previous work by Mardal, Nilssen, and Staff (2007, SIAM J. Sci. Comp. v. 29, pp. 361-375) and Rana, Howle, Long, Meek, and Milestone (2021, SIAM J. Sci. We generalize previous work by Mardal, Nilssen, and Staff (2007, SIAM J. Sci. Comp. v. 29, pp. 361-375) and Rana, Howle, Long, Meek, and Milestone (2021, SIAM J. Sci. Comp. v. 43, p. 475-495) on order-optimal preconditioners for parabolic PDEs to a larger class of differential equations and methods. The problems considered are those of the forms $u_{t}=-\mathcal{K}u+g$ and $u_{tt}=-\mathcal{K}u+g$, where the operator $\mathcal{K}$ is defined by $\mathcal{K}u:=-\nabla\cdot\left(α\nabla u\right)+βu$ and the functions $α$ and $β$ are restricted so that $α>0$, and $β\ge0$. The methods considered are A-stable implicit Runge--Kutta methods for the parabolic equation and implicit Runge--Kutta--Nyström methods for the hyperbolic equation. We prove the order optimality of a class of block preconditioners for the stage equation system arising from these problems, and furthermore we show that the LD and DU preconditioners of Rana et al. are in this class. We carry out numerical experiments on several test problems in this class -- the 2D diffusion equation, Pennes bioheat equation, the wave equation, and the Klein--Gordon equation, with both constant and variable coefficients. Our experiments show that these preconditioners, particularly the LD preconditioner, are successful at reducing the condition number of the systems as well as improving the convergence rate and solve time for GMRES applied to the stage equations.

A new preconditioner based on a block $LDU$ factorization with algebraic multigrid subsolves for scalability is introduced for the large, structured systems appearing in implicit Runge-Kutta time integration of parabolic partial differential equations. This preconditioner is compared in condition number and eigenvalue distribution, and in numerical experiments with others in the literature: block Jacobi, block Gauss-Seidel, and the optimized block Gauss-Seidel method of Staff, Mardal, and Nilssen [{\em Modeling, Identification and Control}, 27 (2006), pp. 109-123]. Experiments are run on two test problems, a $2D$ heat equation and a model advection-diffusion problem, using implicit Runge-Kutta methods with two to seven stages. We find that the new preconditioner outperforms the others, with the improvement becoming more pronounced as spatial discretization is refined and as temporal order is increased.
