The $^{23}$Na($α,p$)$^{26}$Mg reaction has been identified as having a significant impact on the nucleosynthesis of several nuclei between Ne and Ti in type-Ia supernovae, and of $^{23}$Na and $^{26}$Al in massive stars. The reaction has been subjected to renewed experimental interest recently, motivated by high uncertainties in early experimental data and in the statistical Hauser-Feshbach models used in reaction rate compilations. Early experiments were affected by target deterioration issues and unquantifiable uncertainties. Three new independent measurements instead are utilizing inverse kinematics and Rutherford scattering monitoring to resolve this. In this work we present directly measured angular distributions of the emitted protons to eliminate a discrepancy in the assumptions made in the recent reaction rate measurements, which results in cross sections differing by a factor of 3. We derive a new combined experimental reaction rate for the $^{23}$Na($α,p$)$^{26}$Mg reaction with a total uncertainty of 30% at relevant temperatures. Using our new $^{23}$Na($α,p$)$^{26}$Mg rate, the $^{26}$Al and $^{23}$Na production uncertainty is reduced to within 8%. In comparison, using the factor of 10 uncertainty previously recommended by the rate compilation STARLIB, $^{26}$Al and $^{23}$Na production was changing by more than a factor of 2. In type-Ia supernova conditions, the impact on production of $^{23}$Na is constrained to within 15%.

Our understanding of the low-lying resonance structure in $^{12}$C remains incomplete. We have used the $^{11}\text{B}(p,3α)γ$ reaction at proton energies of $E_p=0.5-2.7$ MeV as a selective probe of the excitation region above the $3α$ threshold in $^{12}$C. Transitions to individual levels in $^{12}$C were identified by measuring the 3$α$ final state with a compact array of charged-particle detectors. Previously identified transitions to narrow levels were confirmed and new transitions to broader levels were observed for the first time. Here, we report cross sections, deduce partial $γ$-decay widths and discuss the relative importance of direct and resonant capture mechanisms.

A systematic study of neutron-hole strength in the N = 81 nuclei 137Ba, 139Ce, 141Nd and 143Sm is reported. The single-neutron removal reactions (p,d) and (3He,4He) were measured at energies of 23 and 34 MeV, respectively. Spectroscopic factors were extracted from measured cross sections through a distorted-wave Born approximation analysis and centroids of single-particle strength have been established. The change in these centroid energies as a function of proton number have been compared to calculations of the monopole shift for the s1/2 and h11/2 orbitals, where the majority of the strength has been observed. Significant fragmentation of strength was observed for the d and g7/2 orbitals, particularly for the latter orbital which is deeply bound, with summed strengths that indicate a significant amount lies outside of the measured excitation energy range.

The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children is commonly accompanied by a diagnosis of sensory processing disorders as well. Abnormalities are usually reported in multiple sensory processing domains, showing a higher prevalence of unusual responses, particularly to tactile, auditory and visual stimuli. This paper discusses a novel robot-based framework designed to target sensory difficulties faced by children with ASD in a controlled setting. The setup consists of a number of sensory stations, together with robotic agents that navigate the stations and interact with the stimuli as they are presented. These stimuli are designed to resemble real world scenarios that form a common part of one's everyday experiences. Given the strong interest of children with ASD in technology in general and robots in particular, we attempt to utilize our robotic platform to demonstrate socially acceptable responses to the stimuli in an interactive, pedagogical setting that encourages the child's social, motor and vocal skills, while providing a diverse sensory experience. A user study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed framework, with a total of 18 participants (5 with ASD and 13 typically develo**) between the ages of 4 and 12 years. We describe our methods of data collection, coding of video data and the analysis of the results obtained from the study. We also discuss the limitations of the current work and detail our plans for the future work to improve the validity of the obtained results.

The production of 26 Al in massive stars is sensitive to the 23 Na(a,p) 26 Mg cross section. Recent experimental data suggest the currently recommended cross sections are underestimated by a factor of 40. We present here differential cross sections for the 23 Na(a,p) 26 Mg reaction measured in the energy range E c.m. = 1.7 - 2.5 MeV. Concurrent measurements of Rutherford scattering provide absolute normalisations which are independent of variations in target properties. Angular distributions were measured for both p 0 and p 1 permitting the determination of total cross sections. The results show no significant deviation from the statistical model calculations upon which the recommended rates are based. We therefore retain the previous recommendation without the increase in cross section and resulting stellar reaction rates of a factor of 40, impacting on the 26 Al yield from massive stars by more than a factor of three.

We consider the hypothesis that galactic magnetic fields are primordial. We also discuss the various objections to this hypothesis. We assume that there was a magnetic field present in the galactic plasma before the galaxy formed. After the galactic disk formed, the lines of force thread through it and remain connected to the external cosmic medium. They enter through one side of the disk, proceed horizontally a distance $ l $ in the disk, and then leave through the other side. We find that the lines of force are stretched rotation of the galactic disk, which amplifies the toroidal component of the field and increases$l $. When the magnetic field is strong enough, it produces ambipolar velocities that try to lift the line out of the galactic disk but in opposite directions ondifferent parts of the line. The result is, instead of the line being expelled from the disk, its horizontal length $l $ is shortened, both in the radial, and in the toroidal direction. This leads to a reduction of the rate of horizontal stretching, and, finally, a reduction in the magnetic field strength. After a sufficient time, the magnetic field at all points goes through this stretching and reduction, and the field strength approaches a universal function of time. This function is slowly decreasing, and only depends on the ambipolar propertiesof the interstellar medium. At any given time the magnetic field is toroidal, and has the same strength almost everywhere. On the other hand, it turns out that its direction varies rapidly with radius, changing sign every one hundred parsecs field dominate over that of the other. The resulting field has a net Faraday rotation. If such a field were observed with low resolution in an external galaxy then the field would appear toroidal in between the spiral arms. The spiral density wave would turn it so that the lines appear to trace out the spiral arm,
