We introduce a model compound featuring a spin-1/2 frustrated square lattice partially coupled by spin-5/2. A significant magnetization plateau exceeding 60 T could be observed, indicating a quantum state formed by $S$ = 1/2 spins in the square lattice. The remaining $S$ = 5/2 spins exhibited paramagnetic behavior in the low-field regions. The numerical analysis confirmed that the observed quantum state is a many-body entangled state based on the dominant AF interactions and is strongly stabilized by coupling with spin-5/2. The stabilization of this quantum state can be attributed to a compensation effect similar to magnetic field-induced superconductivity, which serves as a strategy to control the stability of quantum spin states in magnetic fields.

We successfully synthesized ($p$-Py-V)[Cu(hfac)$_2$], a verdazyl-based complex. Molecular orbital calculations revealed five types of intermolecular interactions between the radical spins and two types of intramolecular interactions between the radical and the Cu spins, resulting in a spin-1/2 distorted honeycomb-based lattice. Additionally, competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions induce frustration. The magnetization curve displayed a multistage increase, including a zero-field energy gap. Considering the stronger AF interactions that form dimers and tetramers, the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curves were qualitatively explained. These findings demonstrated that the quantum state, based on the dominant AF interactions, was stabilized due to the effects of frustration in the lattice. Hence, the exchange interactions forming two-dimensional couplings decoupled, reducing energy loss caused by frustration and leading to frustration-induced dimensional reduction.

This study presents the experimental realization of a spin-1/2 zigzag-square lattice in a verdazyl-based complex, namely ($m$-Py-V-2,6-F$_2$)$[$Cu(hfac)$_2]$. Molecular orbital calculations suggest the presence of five types of frustrated exchange couplings. Our observations reveal an incremental increase in the magnetization curve beyond a critical field, signifying a phase transition from the antiferromagnetic ordered state to a quantum state characterized by a 1/2 plateau. This intriguing behavior arises from the effective stabilization of a zigzag chain by the external fields. These results provide evidence for field-induced dimensional reduction in a zigzag-square lattice attributed to the effects of frustration.

The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility reveals its ferromagnetic behavior. The magnetic specific heat exhibits a double-peak structure and indicates a phase transition at the low-temperature peak. The observed characteristics are explained using the quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Furthermore, the modified spin-wave theory verifies that the double-peak structure of the specific heat significantly reflects the relative ration of the acoustic excitation band and the optical excitation gap.

We present a model compound with a spin-1/2 frustrated square lattice, in which three ferromagnetic (F) interactions and one antiferromagnetic (AF) compet. Considering the effective spin-1 formed by the dominant F dimer, this square lattice can be mapped to a spin-1 spatially anisotropic triangular lattice. The magnetization curve exhibits gapped behavior indicative of a dominant one-dimensional (1D) AF correlation. In the field-induced gapless phase, the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility show a phase transition to an ordered state with 2D characteristics. These results indicate that the spin-1 Haldane state is extended to the 2D system. We demonstrate that the gapped ground state observed in the present spin-1/2 frustrated square lattice originates from the one-dimensionalization caused by frustration.

The criticality of 3-Cl-4-F-V is characterized by a linear phase boundary with respect to $H_{\mathrm{c}}-H$ near $H\,=\,H_{\mathrm{c}}$. This behavior is similar to that of another strong-leg-type FM-leg ladder. The universal critical behavior in these strong-leg-type FM-leg ladders is expected to demonstrate the theoretically predicted quasi-one-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensation.

The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate a phase transition to an AF order owing to the finite interchain couplings. We explain the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curve above the phase transition temperature based on the $S$=1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The magnetization curve in the ordered phase is described by a conventional AF two-sublattice model. Furthermore, the obtained magnetic specific heat reproduces the almost temperature-independent behavior of the $S$=1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In the low-temperature region, the magnetic specific heat exhibits $\sqrt{T}$ dependence, which is attributed to the energy dispersion in the ferromagnetic chain.

Further, the $S_{\rm{V}}$=1/2 at one site is sandwiched by $S_{\rm{Fe}}$=5/2 spins through antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions. The magnetic properties indicate that the dominant AF interactions between the $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 spins form a gapped singlet state, and the remaining $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spins cause an AF order. The magnetization curve exhibits a linear increase up to approximately 7 T, and an unconventional 5/6 magnetization plateau appears between 7 T and 40 T. We discuss the differences between the effective interactions associated with the magnetic properties of the present compound and ($o$-MePy-V)FeCl$_4$. We explain the low-field linear magnetization curve through a mean-field approximation of an $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spin model. At higher field regions, the 5/6 magnetization plateau and subsequent nonlinear increase are reproduced by the $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 AF dimer, in which a particular internal field is applied to one of the spin sites. The ESR resonance signals in the low-temperature and low-field regime are explained by conventional two-sublattice AF resonance modes with easy-axis anisotropy. These results demonstrate that exchange interactions between $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 and $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spins in $[$$o$-MePy-V-($p$-Br)$_2]$FeCl$_4$ realize unconventional magnetic properties with low-field classical behavior and field-induced quantum behavior.

Ab initio calculations indicate the formation of an S = 1/2 square lattice, in which six types of nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic- and antiferromagnetic interactions cause frustration. By applying a magnetic field, we observe an unusually gradual increase of magnetization and a subsequent 1/2-plateau-like behavior. A numerical analysis using the tensor network method qualitatively demonstrates such behaviors and suggests a collinear ordered state and a field-enhanced quantum fluctuation. Furthermore, the local magnetization and T1^-1 probed by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements support these findings.

We explain the magnetic properties based on the $S$ = 1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet using the quantum Monte Carlo method, and examine the effects of the lattice distortion and the interplane interaction contribution. In the low-temperature regions below 6.4 K, we observe anisotropic magnetic behavior accompanied by a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. The electron spin resonance signals exhibit anisotropic behavior in the temperature dependence of the resonance field and the linewidth. We explain the frequency dependence of the resonance fields in the ordered phase using a mean-field approximation with out-of-plane easy-axis anisotropy, which causes a spin-flop phase transition at approximately 0.4 T for the field perpendicular to the plane. Furthermore, the anisotropic dipole field provides supporting information regarding the presence of the easy-axis anisotropy. These results demonstrate that the lattice distortion, anisotropy, and interplane interaction of this model are sufficiently small that they do not affect the intrinsic behavior of the $S$ = 1 / 2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

We investigate magnetic properties of an $S$=1/2 quasi-one dimensional organic antiferromagnet, D-F$_{5}$PNN using magnetization measurements taken at temperatures as low as 0.5 K. Three distinct phases were observed consisting of uniform, dimerized (D), and incommensurate (I) spin structures in the magnetic field versus temperature plane, where a significant hysteresis appears between D-I transitions in the field scan measurements. A combination of magnon ($S$=1) and soliton ($S$=1/2) excitations have successfully reproduced the observed magnetic susceptibility. In addition, such excitations provide a reasonable interpretation of the temperature dependent electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The $ab$ $initio$ MO calculations also indicate a weak AF interchain interaction $J'$ and that the coupled F-AF AHCs form a honeycomb lattice. The $J'$ dependence of the Haldane gap is calculated, and the actual value of $J'$ is determined to be less than 0.01$|J_{\rm{F}}|$.

Abstract:
We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-…

We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of frustration due to weak interladder couplings.

Their crystal strucutures are found to be isomorphous to that of previously reported spin ladder 3-Cl-4-F-V. Through the quantitative analysis of their molecular arrangements and magnetic properties, we confirm that these materials form ferromagnetic chain-based spin ladders with slightly modulated magnetic interactions. These results present the first quantitative demonstration of the fine-tuning of magnetic interactions in the molecular- based materials.

The ab initio MO calculation indicated the formation of an S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with four-fold magnetic periodicity consisting of three types of exchange interactions. We have successfully explained the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the expected spin model by using the quantum Monte Carlo method. Furthermore, we revealed that the alternating and unique Ising ferromagnetic chains become effective in the specific field regions and observed a cooperative phenomenon caused by the magnetic order and quantum fluctuations. These results demonstrate that verdazyl radical could form unconventional spin model with interesting quantum behavior and provide a new way to study a variety of quantum spin systems.

A magnetization process in two-dimensional ferrimagnet BIPNNBNO is analyzed. The compound consists of ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains coupled by two sorts of antiferromagnetic interactions. Whereas a behavior of the magnetization curve in higher magnetic fields can be understood within a process for the separate ferrimagnetic chain, an appearance of the singlet plateau at lower fields is an example of non-Lieb-Mattis type ferrimagnetism. By using the exact diagonalization technique for a finite clusters of sizes 4x8 and 4x10 we show that the interchain frustration coupling plays an essential role in stabilization of the singlet phase. These results are complemented by an analysis of four cylindrically coupled ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains via an abelian bosonization technique and an effective theory based on the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg model when the interchain interactions are sufficiently weak/strong, respectively.

We have measured the specific heat of the S = 1/2 alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound pentafluorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide in magnetic fields using a single crystal and powder. A sharp peak due to field-induced magnetic ordering (FIMO) is observed in both samples. The H-T phase boundary of the FIMO of the single crystal is symmetric with respect to the central field of the gapless field region HC1 < H < HC2, whereas it is distorted for the powder whose ordering temperatures are lower. An analysis employing calculations based on the finite temperature density matrix renormalization group indicates the possibility of novel incommensurate ordering due to frustration in the powder around the central field.

We have measured the specific heat of an S=1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain pentafulorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide under magnetic fields up to H>H_C2. This compound has the field-induced magnetic ordered (FIMO) phase between H_C1 and H_C2. Characteristic behaviors are observed depending on the magnetic field up to above H_C2 outside of the H-T boundary for the FIMO. Temperature and field dependence of the specific heat are qualitatively in good agreement with the theoretical calculation on an S=1/2 two-leg ladder. [Wang et al. Phys. Rev. Lett 84 5399 (2000)] This agreement suggests that the observed behaviors are related with the low-energy excitation in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.
