However, current libraries for building R-LLMs provide high-level abstractions without sufficient transparency for evaluating and optimizing prompts within specific inference processes such as retrieval and gen… ▽ More Retrieval-augmented large language models (R-LLMs) combine pre-trained large language models (LLMs) with information retrieval systems to improve the accuracy of factual question-answering. However, current libraries for building R-LLMs provide high-level abstractions without sufficient transparency for evaluating and optimizing prompts within specific inference processes such as retrieval and generation. To address this gap, we present RaLLe, an open-source framework designed to facilitate the development, evaluation, and optimization of R-LLMs for knowledge-intensive tasks. With RaLLe, developers can easily develop and evaluate R-LLMs, improving hand-crafted prompts, assessing individual inference processes, and objectively measuring overall system performance quantitatively. By leveraging these features, developers can enhance the performance and accuracy of their R-LLMs in knowledge-intensive generation tasks. SimplyRetrieve: A Private and Lightweight Retrieval-Centric Generative AI Tool

Integrating a knowledge retrieval architecture allows for seamless integration of private data into publicly available Generative AI systems using pre-trained LLM without requiring additional model fine-tuning. Moreover, Retrieval-Centric Generation (RCG) approach, a promising future research direction that explicitly separates roles of LLMs and retrievers in context interpretation and knowledge memorization, potentially leads to more efficient implementation. SimplyRetrieve is an open-source tool with the goal of providing a localized, lightweight, and user-friendly interface to these sophisticated advancements to the machine learning community. SimplyRetrieve features a GUI and API based RCG platform, assisted by a Private Knowledge Base Constructor and a Retrieval Tuning Module. By leveraging these capabilities, users can explore the potential of RCG for improving generative AI performance while maintaining privacy standards. Abstract: We constructed a large-scale electromagnetic calorimeter prototype as a part of the Forward Calorimeter upgrade project (FoCal) for the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The prototype, also known as ``Mini FoCal'', consists of 20 layers of silicon pad sensors and tungsten alloy plates with printed circuit boards and readout electronics. The constructed detector was tested at the… ▽ More We constructed a large-scale electromagnetic calorimeter prototype as a part of the Forward Calorimeter upgrade project (FoCal) for the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The prototype, also known as ``Mini FoCal'', consists of 20 layers of silicon pad sensors and tungsten alloy plates with printed circuit boards and readout electronics. The constructed detector was tested at the test beam facility of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. We obtain an energy resolution of about 4.3% for electron beams at both 150 and 250 GeV/$c$, which is consistent with realistic detector response simulations. Longitudinal profiles of electromagnetic shower were also measured and found to agree with the simulations. The same prototype detector was installed in the ALICE experimental area about 7.5m away from the interaction point. It was used to measure inclusive electromagnetic cluster energy distributions and neutral-pion candidate invariant mass distributions for pseudo-rapidity of $η$=3.7-4.5 in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at LHC. The measured distributions in different $η$ regions are similar to those obtained from PYTHIA simulations. △ Less

Can a Frozen Pretrained Language Model be used for Zero-shot Neural Retrieval on Entity-centric Questions?

However, it has been shown that the existing dense retrievers do not generalize well not only out of domain but even in domain such as Wikipedia, especially when a named entity in a question i… ▽ More Neural document retrievers, including dense passage retrieval (DPR), have outperformed classical lexical-matching retrievers, such as BM25, when fine-tuned and tested on specific question-answering datasets. However, it has been shown that the existing dense retrievers do not generalize well not only out of domain but even in domain such as Wikipedia, especially when a named entity in a question is a dominant clue for retrieval. In this paper, we propose an approach toward in-domain generalization using the embeddings generated by the frozen language model trained with the entities in the domain. By not fine-tuning, we explore the possibility that the rich knowledge contained in a pretrained language model can be used for retrieval tasks. The proposed method outperforms conventional DPRs on entity-centric questions in Wikipedia domain and achieves almost comparable performance to BM25 and state-of-the-art SPAR model. We also show that the contextualized keys lead to strong improvements compared to BM25 when the entity names consist of common words. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of the zero-shot retrieval method for entity-centric questions of Wikipedia domain, where DPR has struggled to perform. △ Less

We parallel… ▽ More We develop a new three-dimensional time-dependent radiative transfer code, TRINITY (Time-dependent Radiative transfer In Near-Infrared TomographY), for in-vivo diffuse optical tomography (DOT). The simulation code is based on the design of long radiation rays connecting boundaries of a computational domain, which allows us to calculate light propagation with little numerical diffusion. We parallelize the code with Message Passing Interface (MPI) using the domain decomposition technique and confirm the high parallelization efficiency, so that simulations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 1$ millimeter can be performed in practical time. As a first application, we study the light propagation for a pulse collimated within $θ\sim 15^\circ$ in a phantom, which is a uniform medium made of polyurethane mimicking biological tissue. We show that the pulse spreads in all forward directions over $\sim$ a few millimeters due to the multiple scattering process of photons. Our simulations successfully reproduce the time-resolved signals measured with eight detectors for the phantom. We also introduce the effects of reflection and refraction at the boundary of medium with a different refractive index and demonstrate the faster propagation of photons in an air hole that is an analogue for the respiratory tract. △ Less

Characterization of the gelation and resulting network of a mixed-protein gel derived from sodium caseinate and ovalbumin in the presence of glucono-$δ$-lactone

Ultrasound spectroscopy during gelation revealed that the relative… ▽ More We investigated mixed-protein gels made from sodium caseinate and ovalbumin at different ratios with use of the acidification agent glucono-$δ$-lactone. Dynamic viscoelastic measurements revealed that increasing the ovalbumin content decreased the mechanical properties of the gel but accelerated onset time of the phase transition. Ultrasound spectroscopy during gelation revealed that the relative velocity gradually decreased, whereas the ultrasonic attenuation increased during the whole acidification process until gelation was complete, although these changes were much smaller than those observed with heat-induced gelation. Confocal laser scanning microscopy along with scanning electron microscopy revealed that although uniform mixing of sodium caseinate and ovalbumin was observed, sodium caseinate is likely to mainly lead formation of the gel network, and the porosity of the resulting gel network depends on the ratio of these two components. The results demonstrate that confocal laser scanning microscopy is a useful tool for analyzing both the networks within mixed-protein gels and the contribution of each protein to the network and gelation. △ Less

Efficient relaxation from bright exciton states to dark states suppresses the quantum yie… ▽ More The luminescence yield of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers frequently suffers from the formation of long-lived dark states, which include excitons with intervalley charge carriers, spin-forbidden transitions, and a large center-of-mass momentum located outside the light cone of dispersion relations. Efficient relaxation from bright exciton states to dark states suppresses the quantum yield of photon emission. In addition, the radiative recombination of excitons is heavily influenced by Auger-type exciton-exciton scattering, which yields another nonradiative relaxation channel at room temperature. Here, we show that Auger-type scattering is promoted not only between (bright) excitons but also between excitons and long-lived dark states. We studied the luminescence dynamics of monolayer WS2 capped with hexagonal BN over broad time ranges of picoseconds to milliseconds using carefully designed pump-and-probe techniques. We observed that luminescence quenching associated with Auger-type scattering occurs on 1-100 microsecond time scales, which thus correspond to the lifetimes of the relevant dark states. The broad distribution of the measured lifetimes implies the impact of various types of long-lived states on the exciton annihilation process. △ Less

The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations. △ Less

Although numerous assistive devices have been introduced, many people with disabilities are still restricted from independent eating due to the devices' physical or perceptual limitations. In this work, we present a new meal-assistance system and evaluations of this system with people with m… ▽ More Eating is an essential activity of daily living (ADL) for staying healthy and living at home independently. Although numerous assistive devices have been introduced, many people with disabilities are still restricted from independent eating due to the devices' physical or perceptual limitations. In this work, we present a new meal-assistance system and evaluations of this system with people with motor impairments. We also discuss learned lessons and design insights based on the evaluations. The meal-assistance system uses a general-purpose mobile manipulator, a Willow Garage PR2, which has the potential to serve as a versatile form of assistive technology. Our active feeding framework enables the robot to autonomously deliver food to the user's mouth, reducing the need for head movement by the user. The user interface, visually-guided behaviors, and safety tools allow people with severe motor impairments to successfully use the system. We evaluated our system with a total of 10 able-bodied participants and 9 participants with motor impairments. Both groups of participants successfully ate various foods using the system and reported high rates of success for the system's autonomous behaviors. In general, participants who operated the system reported that it was comfortable, safe, and easy-to-use. △ Less

With the prolonged spin coherence time, however, the control fidelity can be limited by systematic errors rather than decoherence, making characterization and suppression of their influence crucial for further improvement. Here we report that the control fidelity of Si/SiGe spin qubits can be limited by the microwave-induced frequency shift of electric dipole spin resonance and it can be improved by optimization of control pulses. As we increase the control microwave amplitude, we observe a shift of the qubit resonance frequency, in addition to the increasing Rabi frequency. We reveal that this limits control fidelity with a conventional amplitude-modulated microwave pulse below 99.8%. In order to achieve a gate fidelity > 99.9%, we introduce a quadrature control method, and validate this approach experimentally by randomized benchmarking. Our finding facilitates realization of an ultra-high fidelity qubit with electron spins in quantum dots. △ Less

Abstract: We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of charged $B$ mesons to the final states $K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} K^{\pm}$ and $K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} π^{\pm}$ . The results are based on a $711 {fb}^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ pairs, and was collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. A hybrid inversion scheme combining Markov chain Monte Carlo and iterative methods for determining optical properties of random media

When optical properties of a random medium is investigated from boundary measurements of reflected or transmitted light, iterative inversion schemes such as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm are known to fail when initial guesses are not close… ▽ More Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) including diffuse optical tomography is an imaging modality which makes use of diffuse light propagation in random media. When optical properties of a random medium is investigated from boundary measurements of reflected or transmitted light, iterative inversion schemes such as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm are known to fail when initial guesses are not close to the true value of the coefficient to be reconstructed. In this paper, we investigate how this weakness of iterative schemes is overcome by the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo. Using time-resolved measurements performed against a polyurethane-based phantom, we present a case that the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm fails to work but the proposed hybrid method works well. Then with a toy model of diffuse optical tomography we illustrate that the evenberg-Marquardt method fails when it is trapped by a local minimum but the hybrid method can escape from local minima by using the Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm until it reaches the valley of the global minimum. The proposed hybrid scheme can be applied to different inverse problems in NIRS which are solved iteratively. We find that for both numerical and phantom experiments optical properties such as the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients can be retrieved without being trapped by a local minimum when Monte Carlo simulation is run only about $100$ steps before switching to an iterative method. The hybrid method is compared with simulated annealing. Although the Metropolis-Hastings MCMC arrives at the steady state at about $10000$ Monte Carlo steps, in the hybrid method the Monte Carlo simulation can be stopped way before the burn-in time. △ Less

A Multimodal Anomaly Detector for Robot-Assisted Feeding Using an LSTM-based Variational Autoencoder

For evaluations with 1,555 robot-assisted feeding executions including 12 representative types of anomalies, our detector had a higher area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.8710 than 5 other baseline detectors from the literature. A >99.9%-fidelity quantum-dot spin qubit with coherence limited by charge noise

In the meanwhile, addressable single-spin and spin-spin manipulations in multiple-qubit systems will necessitate sizable spin-electric coupling. Given background charge fluctuation in nanostructures, however, its compatibility with enhanced coherence should be crucially questioned. Here we realise a single-electron spin qubit with isotopically-enriched phase coherence time (20 microseconds) and fast electrical control speed (up to 30 MHz) mediated by extrinsic spin-electric coupling. Using rapid spin rotations, we reveal that the free-evolution dephasing is caused by charge (instead of conventional magnetic) noise featured by a 1/f spectrum over seven decades of frequency. The qubit nevertheless exhibits superior performance with single-qubit gate fidelities exceeding 99.9% on average. Our work strongly suggests that designing artificial spin-electric coupling with account taken of charge noise is a promising route to large-scale spin-qubit systems having fault-tolerant controllability. △ Less

Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of $\left|V_{cb} \right|$ is determined to be $\left( 37.4 \pm 1.3 \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Both results are in good agreement with current world averages. △ Less

The relative production ratio of $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$, $B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}$, and $B_s\bar{B}_s$ final states at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$ GeV is measured to be $7:$ $0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.):$ $0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.)$. Abstract: We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. Abstract: We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm φ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm φ_3)$ and $φ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. Abstract: We present measurements of the masses and decay widths of the baryonic states $Σ_{c}(2455)^{0/++}$ and $Σ_{c}(2520)^{0/++}$ using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider operating at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. The isospin mass splittings are measured to be $M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{++})-M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{0})=0.22\pm0.01\pm0.01$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{++})-M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{0})=0.01\pm0.15\pm0.03$ MeV/$c^{2}$. Abstract: We report a measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ mixing parameters and a search for indirect $CP$ violation through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ decays. The results are based on 921~fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. With $CP$ violation allowed, the parameters $|q/p|=0.90^{+0.16}_{-0.15}{^{+0.05}_{-0.04}}{^{+0.06}_{-0.05}}$ and $\arg(q/p)=(-6\pm11{\pm3}{^{+3}_{-4}})^{\circ}$ are found to be consistent with conservation of $CP$ symmetry in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, respectively. △ Less

For $q^2 > 10.2$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, ${\cal A}_{\rm FB} < 0$ is excluded at the 2.3$σ$ level, where $σ$ is the standard deviation. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb^-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We search for doubly charmed baryons Xi_cc^+(+) with the Lambda_c^+K^-pi^+(pi^+) and Xi_c^0pi^+(pi^+) final states. No significant signal is observed. We also search for two excited charmed strange baryons, Xi_c(3055)^+ and Xi_c(3123)^+ with the Sigma_c^++(2455)K^- and Sigma_c^++(2520)K^- final states. The Xi_c(3055)^+ signal is observed with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations including systematic uncertainty, while no signature of the Xi_c(3123)^+ is seen. We also study properties of the Xi_c(2645)^+ and measure a width of 2.6 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 0.4 (syst) MeV/c^2, which is the first significant determination. △ Less
