We detail the sensitivity of the liquid xenon (LXe) DARWIN observatory to solar neutrinos via elastic electron scattering. We find that DARWIN will have the potential to measure the fluxes of five solar neutrino components: $pp$, $^7$Be, $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$. The precision of the $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$ components is hindered by the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe and, thus, would benefit from a depleted target. A high-statistics observation of $pp$ neutrinos would allow us to infer the values of the weak mixing angle, $\sin^2θ_w$, and the electron-type neutrino survival probability, $P_e$, in the electron recoil energy region from a few keV up to 200 keV for the first time, with relative precision of 5% and 4%, respectively, at an exposure of 300 ty. An observation of $pp$ and $^7$Be neutrinos would constrain the neutrino-inferred solar luminosity down to 0.2%. A combination of all flux measurements would distinguish between the high (GS98) and low metallicity (AGS09) solar models with 2.1-2.5$σ$ significance, independent of external measurements from other experiments or a measurement of $^8$B neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in DARWIN. Finally, we demonstrate that with a depleted target DARWIN may be sensitive to the neutrino capture process of $^{131}$Xe.

The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) aims to determine the effective electron (anti)neutrino mass with a sensitivity of $0.2\textrm{ eV/c}^2$ (90$\%$ C.L.) by precisely measuring the endpoint region of the tritium $β$-decay spectrum. It uses a tandem of electrostatic spectrometers working as MAC-E (magnetic adiabatic collimation combined with an electrostatic) filters. In the space between the pre-spectrometer and the main spectrometer, an unavoidable Penning trap is created when the superconducting magnet between the two spectrometers, biased at their respective nominal potentials, is energized. The electrons accumulated in this trap can lead to discharges, which create additional background electrons and endanger the spectrometer and detector section downstream. To counteract this problem, "electron catchers" were installed in the beamline inside the magnet bore between the two spectrometers. These catchers can be moved across the magnetic-flux tube and intercept on a sub-ms time scale the stored electrons along their magnetron motion paths. In this paper, we report on the design and the successful commissioning of the electron catchers and present results on their efficiency in reducing the experimental background.

The determination of the neutrino mass is one of the major challenges in astroparticle physics today. Direct neutrino mass experiments, based solely on the kinematics of beta-decay, provide a largely model-independent probe to the neutrino mass scale. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to directly measure the effective electron antineutrino mass with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV 90% CL. In this work we report on the first operation of KATRIN with tritium which took place in 2018. During this commissioning phase of the tritium circulation system, excellent agreement of the theoretical prediction with the recorded spectra was found and stable conditions over a time period of 13 days could be established. These results are an essential prerequisite for the subsequent neutrino mass measurements with KATRIN in 2019.

We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic endpoint at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of $(-1.0^{+0.9}_{-1.1})$ eV$^2$. From this we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90$\%$ confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of two and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.

The voltage-current characteristics show excellent scalability according to the vortex-glass model with a static critical exponent ν of around 1.35 and a temperature-dependent dynamic exponent z increasing from 7.8 to 9.0 for the investigated temperature range. The large and non-constant z values are discussed in the frame of 3D vortex glass, thermally activated flux motion, and inhomogeneity broadening.

For Mn3CuN, a uniaxial strain derivative along [100] direction of the Curie temperature dTC/de100=13 K/% was observed. High temperature (high-Tc) superconductors like cuprates have superior critical current properties in magnetic fields over other superconductors. However, superconducting wires for high-field-magnet applications are still dominated by low-Tc Nb3Sn due probably to cost and processing issues. The recent discovery of a second class of high-Tc materials, Fe-based superconductors, may provide another option for high-field-magnet wires. In particular, AEFe2As2 (AE: Alkali earth elements, AE-122) is one of the best candidates for high-field-magnet applications because of its high upper critical field, Hc2, moderate Hc2 anisotropy, and intermediate Tc. Here we report on in-field transport properties of P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films grown on technical substrates (i.e., biaxially textured oxides templates on metal tapes) by pulsed laser deposition. The P-doped Ba-122 coated conductor sample exceeds a transport Jc of 10^5 A/cm^2 at 15 T for both major crystallographic directions of the applied magnetic field, which is favourable for practical applications. Our P-doped Ba-122 coated conductors show a superior in-field Jc over MgB2 and NbTi, and a comparable level to Nb3Sn above 20 T. By analysing the E-J curves for determining Jc, a non-Ohmic linear differential signature is observed at low field due to flux flow along the grain boundaries. However, grain boundaries work as flux pinning centres as demonstrated by the pinning force analysis.

The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) present a large variety of compounds whose properties are affected to different extents by their crystal structures. Amongst them, the $\it{RE}$FeAs(O,F) ($\it{RE}$1111, where $\it{RE}$ is a rare earth element) is the family with the highest critical temperature $T_c$ but also with a large anisotropy and Josephson vortices as demonstrated in the flux-flow regime in Sm1111 ($T_c$ $\sim$ 55 K). Here we focus our attention on the pinning properties of the lower-$T_c$ Nd1111 in the flux-creep regime. We demonstrate that for H//c critical current density $J_c$ at high temperatures is dominated by point-defect pinning centres, whereas at low temperatures surface pinning by planar defects parallel to the $\it{c}$-axis and vortex shearing prevail. When the field approaches the $\it{ab}$-planes, two different regimes are observed at low temperatures as a consequence of the transition between 3D-Abrikosov and 2D-Josephson vortices: one is determined by the formation of a vortex staircase structure and one by lock-in of the vortices parallel to the layers. This is the first study on FBS showing this behaviour in a full temperature, field, and angular range and it demonstrates that, despite the lower $T_c$ and anisotropy of Nd1111 with respect to Sm1111, this compound is substantially affected by intrinsic pinning generating a strong $\it{ab}$-peak in $J_c$.

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and do** dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co do**. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co do**. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

The strong magnetic field that guides the beta-electrons is provided by super-conducting solenoids at both ends of the spectrometer. Its influence on turbo-molecular pumps and vacuum gauges had to be considered. A system consisting of 6 turbo-molecular pumps and 3 km of non-evaporable getter strips has been deployed and was tested during the commissioning of the spectrometer. In this paper the configuration, the commissioning with bake-out at 300°C, and the performance of this system are presented in detail. The vacuum system has to maintain a pressure in the 10^{-11} mbar range. It is demonstrated that the performance of the system is already close to these stringent functional requirements for the KATRIN experiment, which will start at the end of 2016.

Microstructura lly clean, isov alently P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) single crystalline thin films have been prepared on MgO (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. These films show a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of over 30 K although P content is around 0.22, which is lower than the optimal one for single crystals (i.e., 0.33). The enhanced Tc at this do** level is attributed to the in-plane tensile strain. The strained film shows high transport self-field critical current densities (Jc) of over 6 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K, which are among the highest for Fe based superconductors (FeSCs). In-field Jc exceeds 0.1 MA/cm2 at m0H = 35 T for H||ab and m0H = 18 T for H||c at 4.2 K, respectively, in spite of moderate upper critical fields compared to other FeSCs with similar Tc. Structural investigations reveal no defects or misoriented grains pointing to strong pinning centers. We relate this unexpected high Jc to a strong enhancement of the vortex core energy at optimal Tc, driven by in-plane strain and do**. These unusually high Jc make P-doped Ba-122 very favorable for high-field magnet applications.

Albeit higher Tc as well as better crystalline quality than Co-doped BaFe2As2 coated conductors, in-field Jc of NdFeAs(O,F) was lower than that of Co-doped BaFe2As2. These results suggest that grain boundaries in oxypnictides reduce Jc significantly compared to that in Co-doped BaFe2As2 and, hence biaxial texture is necessary for high Jc.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and some KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ for stoichiometric KFe$_2$As$_2$. The analysis of $T_c$ in the K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of $T_c$ with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature $T_{c0}$ of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

The temperature dependence of the resistivity of epitaxial Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 thin films (with nominal do** x = 0.08, 0.10 and 0.15) has been analyzed and compared with analogous measurements on single crystals taken from literature. The rho(T) of thin films looks different from that of single crystals, even when the cobalt content is the same. All rho(T) curves can be fitted by considering an effective two-band model (with holes and electrons bands) in which the electrons are more strongly coupled with the bosons (spin fluctuations) than holes, while the effect of impurities is mainly concentrated in the hole band. Within this model the mediating boson has the same characteristic energy in single crystals and thin films, but the shape of the transport spectral function at low energy has to be very different, leading to a "hardening" of the electron-boson spectral function in thin films, associated with the strain induced by the substrate.

Angle-resolved transport measurements revealed that planar defects dominate flux pinning in the investigated Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin film. For any given field and temperature, the critical current depends only on the angle between the crystallographic c-axis and the applied magnetic field but not on the angle between the current and the field. The critical current is therefore limited only by the in-plane component of the Lorentz force but independent of the out-of-plane component, which is entirely balanced by the pinning force exerted by the planar defects. This one-dimensional pinning behavior shows similarities and differences to intrinsic pinning in layered superconductors.

The discovery of superconductivity (SC) with a transition temperature, Tc, up to 65K in single-layer FeSe (bulk Tc =8K) films grown on SrTiO3 substrates has attracted special attention to Fe-based thin films. The high Tc is a consequence of the combined effect of electron transfer from the oxygen-vacant substrate to the FeSe thin film and lattice tensile strain. Here we demonstrate the realization of SC in the parent compound BaFe2As2 (no bulk Tc) just by tensile lattice strain without charge do**. We investigate the interplay between strain and SC in epitaxial BaFe2As2 thin films on Fe-buffered MgAl2O4 single crystalline substrates. The strong interfacial bonding between Fe and the FeAs sublattice increases the Fe-Fe distance due to the lattice misfit which leads to a suppression of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave and induces SC with bulk-Tc ?10K. These results highlight the role of structural changes in controlling the phase diagram of Fe-based superconductors.

The anisotropy of the critical current density Jc depends in general on both the properties of the flux lines (such as line tension, coherence length and penetration depth) and the properties of the defects (such as density, shape, orientation etc.). Whereas the Jc anisotropy in microstructurally clean films can be scaled to an effective magnetic field containing the Ginzburg-Landau anisotropy term, it is in general not possible (or only in a limited field range) for samples containing extended defects. Here, the Jc anisotropy of a Co-doped BaFe2As2 sample with 45° [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs), i.e. grain boundaries created by 45° in-plane rotated grains, as well as extended Fe particles is investigated. This microstructure leads to c-axis correlated pinning, both due to the GBs and the Fe particles and manifests in a c-axis peak in the Jc anisotropy at low magnetic fields and a deviation from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau scaling at higher fields. Strong pinning at ellipsoidal extended defects, i.e. the Fe particles, is discussed, and the full Jc anisotropy is fitted successfully with the vortex path model. The results are compared to a sample without GBs and Fe particles. 45° GBs seem to be good pinning centers rather than detrimental to current flow.

We tested oxidized titanium layers as barriers for hybrid Josephson junctions with high $I_cR_n$-products and for the preparation of junctions for tunneling spectroscopy. For that we firstly prepared junctions with conventional superconductor electrodes lead and niobium, respectively. By tuning the barrier thickness we were able to change the junctions' behavior from a Josephson junction to tunnel-like behavior applicable for quasi-particle spectroscopy. Subsequently, we transferred the technology to junctions using Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition as base electrode and evaporated Pb as counter electrode. For barriers with a thickness of 1.5\,nm we observe clear Josephson effects with $I_cR_n$\,$\approx$\,90\,$μ$V at 4.2\,K. These junctions behave SNS'-like and are dominated by Andreev reflection transport mechanism. For junctions with barrier thickness of 2.0\,nm and higher no Josephson but SIS'- or SINS'-like behavior with a tunnel-like conductance spectrum was observed.

Our design allows characterization of the electrodes and the junction independently in a 4-probe method. We show how both electrodes influence the measured spectra due to their spreading resistance. While the Pb electrode has a constant resistance above its $T_c$, the contribution of the pnictide electrode is clearly current-dependent and thus it needs a more advanced method to be corrected. We present an empirical method, which is simple to apply and allows to deal with the spreading resistance in our junctions to recalculate the actual conductance and voltage of one junction at given temperature.

We present a systematic study of the electronic specific heat jump ($ΔC_{\rm el}$) at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconducting state and the nearly quadratic scaling of $ΔC_{\rm el}$ at $T_c$ are well described by the Eliashberg-theory for a two-band $d$-wave superconductor with weak pair-breaking due to nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder induced by the Na substitution significantly suppresses the small gaps leading to gapless states in the slightly disordered superconductor, which results in a large observed residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state for $x > 0$.

The dependence of the superconducting gaps in epitaxial Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_2As_2 thin films on the nominal do** x (0.04 \leq x \leq 0.15) was studied by means of point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy. The normalized conductance curves were well fitted by using the 2D Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with two nodeless, isotropic gaps -- although the possible presence of gap anisotropies cannot be completely excluded. The amplitudes of the two gaps Δ_{S} and Δ_{L} show similar monotonic trends as a function of the local critical temperature T_{c}^{A} (measured in the same point contacts) from 25 K down to 8 K. The dependence of the gaps on x is well correlated to the trend of the critical temperature, i.e. to the shape of the superconducting region in the phase diagram. When analyzed within a simple three-band Eliashberg model, this trend turns out to be compatible with a mechanism of superconducting coupling mediated by spin fluctuations, whose characteristic energy scales with T_{c} according to the empirical law Ω_{0}= 4.65*k_{B}*T_{c}, and with a total electron-boson coupling strength λ_{tot}= 2.22 for x \leq 0.10 (i.e. up to optimal do**) that slightly decreases to λ_{tot}= 1.82 in the overdoped samples (x = 0.15).

It has been shown that surface of Fe-based superconductors degrades rapidly if being exposed to air, what results in suppression of gap-like structure on PCS spectra. Moreover, SSRM measurements revealed inhomogeneous surface conductivity, what is consistent with strong dependence of PCS spectra on contact position. Presented results suggest that fresh surface and small probing area should be assured for surface sensitive measurements like PCS to obtain intrinsic properties of Fe-based superconductors.

The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAs(O,F) is the most attractive material among the Fe-based superconductors due to its highest transition temperature of 56 K and potential for high-field performance. In order to exploit this new material for superconducting applications, the knowledge and understanding of its electro-magnetic properties are needed. Recent success in fabricating epitaxial SmFeAs(O,F) thin films opens a great opportunity to explore their transport properties. Here we report on a high critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm^2 at 45 T and 4.2 K for both main field orientations, feature favourable for high-field magnet applications. Additionally, by investigating the pinning properties, we observed a dimensional crossover between the superconducting coherence length and the FeAs interlayer distance at 30-40 K, indicative of a possible intrinsic Josephson junction in SmFeAs(O,F) at low temperatures that can be employed in electronics applications such as a terahertz radiation source and a superconducting Qubit.

We report on the transport properties of clean, epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films prepared on Fe-buffered MgO (001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Near Tc a steep slope of the upper critical field for H||ab was observed (74.1 T/K), leading to a very short out-of-plane coherence length, ξc, of 0.2 nm, yielding 2ξc(0) approximately 0.4 nm. This value is shorter than the interlayer distance (0.605 nm) between Fe-Se(Te) planes, indicative of modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the c-axis. An inverse correlation between the power law exponent N of the electric field-current density (E-J) curve and the critical current density, Jc, has been observed at 4 K, when the orientation of H was close to the ab-plane. These results prove the presence of intrinsic pinning in Fe(Se,Te). A successful scaling of the angular dependent Jc and the corresponding exponent N can be realized by the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau approach with appropriate Γvalues 2~3.5. The temperature dependence of Γbehaves almost identically to that of the penetration depth anisotropy.

The PCAR spectra are analyzed within the two-band 3D version of the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model for Andreev reflection we recently developed, and that makes use of an analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated within the density-functional theory (DFT). The spectra in Ca(Fe_{0.94}Co_{0.06})2As2 unambiguously demonstrate the presence of nodes or zeros in the small gap. In Ba(Fe_{0.92}Co_{0.08})2As2, the ab-plane spectra in single crystals can be fitted by assuming two nodeless gaps, but this model fails to fit the c-axis ones in epitaxial films. All these results are discussed in comparison with recent theoretical predictions about the occurrence of accidental 3D nodes and the presence of "hot spots" in the gaps of 122 compounds.

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

The multilayers were patterned into 5 to 8 um wide and 5 um long microbridges by electron-beam lithography and ion-milling technique. The microbridges show Tc up to 20 K and a critical current density up to 2.56 MA/cm2 at T = 10 K. The photo-response of Fe-shunted Ba(Fe,Co)2As2 thin film microbridges to infrared radiation was studied in a wide range of incident optical power, operation temperature and bias current. We have found that the electron energy relaxation in studied multilayers is dependent on substrate material and is 1.75 times faster in case of MgAl2O4 characterized by lattice matching to pnictide film in comparison to MgO substrate.

The voltage transients in response to short radiation pulses were recorded in real time with a resolution of a few tens of picoseconds. The bridges were excited by either femtosecond pulses at a wavelength of 0.8 μm or broadband (0.1 - 1.5 THz) picosecond pulses of coherent synchrotron radiation. The transients in response to optical radiation are qualitatively well explained in the framework of the two-temperature model with a fast component in the picosecond range and a bolometric nanosecond component whose decay time depends on the film thickness. The transients in the THz regime showed no bolometric component and had amplitudes up to three orders of magnitude larger than the two-temperature model predicts. Additionally THz-field dependent transients in the absence of DC bias were observed. We attribute the response in the THz regime to a rearrangement of vortices caused by high-frequency currents.

High-quality KFe2As2 single crystals have been studied by transport, magnetization and low-T specific heat measurements. Their analysis shows that superconductivity occurs (in some cases coexists) in the vicinity of disordered magnetic phases (Griffiths and spin-glass type) depending of the amount of local magnetic moments (probably excess Fe derived)and sample inhomogeneity. The achieved phenomenological description of our data including also data from the literature provides a consistent explanation of the observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior and of the nominally large experimental Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n about 94 mJ/mol K^2. We suggest that the intrinsic value (directly related to the itinerant quasi-particles) gamma_el about 60(10)mJ/mol K^2 is significantly reduced compared with gamma_n. Then an enhanced relative jump of the electronic specific heat Delta C_el/gamma_el T_c about 0.8 and a weak total electron-boson coupling constant lambda less or about 1 follow.

The angular-dependent critical current densities exhibit peaks positioned at H // ab similar to other pnictide thin films. The volume pinning force of FeSe1-xTex in this direction is very strong compared with that of Co-doped BaFe2As2, due to a good matching between the interlayer distance in the c direction and the out-of-plane coherence length.

The superconducting transition temperature and the texture quality of Co-doped BaFe2As2 films improve with increasing d due to a gradual relief of the tensile strain. For d>90 nm an additional 110 textured component of Co-doped BaFe2As2 was observed, which leads to an upward shift in the angular dependent critical current density at H // c. These results indicate that the grain boundaries created by the 110 textured component may contribute to the c-axis pinning.

As counter electrode we used a lead indium alloy, while the normal metal layer was formed by thin gold films. Temperature dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity were strongly influenced by the properties of the electrodes. We developed a junction structure that allows us to characterize the electrodes, too, including the behavior of their normal state resistance in order to correct their influences on the conduction spectra. The corrected conductivity of the junction was described within an extended BTK-model and shows a behavior dominated by Andreev reflexion.

We report magnetization measurements of As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta (delta about 0.06) samples with improved superconducting properties as compared with As-stoichiometric optimally doped La-1111 samples. In this As-deficient system with almost homogeneously distributed As-vacancies (AV), as suggested by the (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements,we observe a strong enhancement of the spin-susceptibility by a factor of 3-7. This observation is attributed to the presence of an electronically localized state around each AV, carrying a magnetic moment of about 3.2 mu_Bohr per AV or 0.8 mu_Bohr/Fe atom. From theoretical considerations we find that the formation of a local moment on neighboring iron sites of an AV sets in when the local Coulomb interaction exceeds a critical value of about 1.0 eV in the dilute limit. Its estimated value amounts to ~ 2.5 eV and implies an upper bound of ~ 2 eV for the Coulomb repulsion at Fe sites beyond the first neighbor-shell of an AV. Electronic correlations are thus moderate/weak in doped La-1111. The strongly enhanced spin susceptibility is responsible for the Pauli limiting behavior of the superconductivity that we observe in As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta. In contrast, no Pauli limiting behavior is found for the optimally doped, As-stoichiometric LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs superconductor in accord with its low spin susceptibility.

The value of the gap is distributed in the range 2Δ\simeq 5-10 meV (for Re=Sm) with a maximum in the distribution around 6 meV. Temperature dependence of the gap Δ(T) can be fitted well by BCS curve giving reduced gap ratio 2Δ/kT_c^*\simeq 3.5 (here T_c^* is the critical temperature from the BCS fit). At the same time, an expected second larger gap feature was difficult to resolve distinctly on the AR spectra making determination reliability of the second gap detection questionable. Possible reasons for this and the origin of other features like clear-cut asymmetry in the AR spectra and current regime in PCs are discussed.

Epitaxial niobium-nitride thin films with a critical temperature of Tc=16K and a thickness of 100nm were fabricated on MgO(100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images of the supercurrent vortices were measured after field cooling in a magnetic field of 3mT at various temperatures. Temperature dependence of the penetration depth has been evaluated by a two-dimensional fitting of the vortex profiles in the monopole-monopole model. Its subsequent fit to a single s-wave gap function results in the superconducting gap amplitude Delta(0) = 2.9 meV = 2.1*kB*Tc, in perfect agreement with previous reports. The pinning force has been independently estimated from local depinning of individual vortices by lateral forces exerted by the MFM tip and from transport measurements. A good quantitative agreement between the two techniques shows that for low fields, B << Hc2, MFM is a powerful and reliable technique to probe the local variations of the pinning landscape. We also demonstrate that the monopole model can be successfully applied even for thin films with a thickness comparable to the penetration depth.

Diffusionless phase transitions are at the core of the multifunctionality of (magnetic) shape memory alloys, ferroelectrics and multiferroics. Giant strain effects under external fields are obtained in low symmetric modulated martensitic phases. We outline the origin of modulated phases, their connection with tetragonal martensite and consequences for their functional properties by analysing the martensitic microstructure of epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films from the atomic to macroscale. Geometrical constraints at an austenite-martensite phase boundary act down to the atomic scale. Hence a martensitic microstructure of nanotwinned tetragonal martensite can form. Coarsening of twin variants can reduce twin boundary energy, a process we could follow from the atomic to the millimetre scale. Coarsening is a fractal process, proceeding in discrete steps by doubling twin periodicity. The collective defect energy results in a substantial hysteresis, which allows retaining modulated martensite as a metastable phase at room temperature. In this metastable state elastic energy is released by the formation of a 'twins within twins' microstructure which can be observed from the nanometre to millimetre scale. This hierarchical twinning results in mesoscopic twin boundaries which are diffuse, in contrast to the common atomically sharp twin boundaries of tetragonal martensite. We suggest that observed extraordinarily high mobility of such mesoscopic twin boundaries originates from their diffuse nature which renders pinning by atomistic point defects ineffective.

The conductivity and permittivity optical spectra of iron-pnictide Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2 film (Tc=20 K) are analyzed. In the superconducting state, at all temperatures up to Tc the temperature dependences of the magnetic field penetration depth and of the superconducting condensate density are well described within the generalized two-band BCS model with intraband and interband pairing interactions considered. It is shown that the smaller superconducting energy gap 2Δ = 3.7 meV develops in the electronic subsystem while the larger gap 2Δ >= 7 meV opens in the hole subsystem. The normal state parameters (plasma frequencies and scattering rates) of electron and hole conduction bands are determined. At all temperatures the obtained data are consistent with the results of electronic photoemission experiments on Ba(Fe1-x Cox)2As2.
