Detecting Diffuse Sources in Astronomical Images
Abstract: We present an algorithm capable of detecting diffuse, dim sources of any size in an astronomical image. These sources often defeat traditional methods for source finding, which expand regions around points of high intensity. Extended sources often have no bright points and are only detectable when viewed as a whole, so a more sophisticated approach is required. Our algorithm operates at all scales… ▽ More

Current New Zealand Activities in Radio Astronomy: Building Capacity in Engineering & Science for the Square Kilometre Array
Abstract: We present an update on the NZ-wide advances in the field of Radio Astronomy and Radio Engineering with a particular focus on contributions, not thus reported elsewhere, which hope to either directly or indirectly contribute to New Zealand's engagement with the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. We discuss the status of the SKA project in New Zealand with particular reference to… ▽ More

Statistical Analysis of Extra-galactic Rotation Measures
Abstract: We have performed a statistical analysis of a sample of 1100 extra-galactic rotation measures (RMs) obtained from the literature. Using a subsample of approximately 800 reliable RMs we compute a rotation measure sky and determine reliable large scale features for the line of sight Galactic magnetic field. We find that the influence of the Milky Way can be seen up to roughly 30 degrees on either… ▽ More
