If $K$ is a compact, connected, simply connected Lie group, its based loop group $ΩK$ is endowed with a Hamiltonian $S^1 \times T$ action, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $K$. Atiyah and Pressley examined the image of $ΩK$ under the moment map $μ$, while Jeffrey and Mare examined the corresponding image of the real locus $ΩK^τ$ for a compatible anti-symplectic involution $τ$. Both papers generalize well known results in finite dimensions, specifically the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg theorem, and Duistermaat's convexity theorem. In the spirit of Kirwan's convexity theorem, this paper aims to further generalize the two aforementioned results by demonstrating convexity of $ΩK$ and its real locus $ΩK^τ$ in the full non-abelian regime, resulting from the Hamiltonian $S^1\times K$ action. In particular, this is done by appealing to the Bruhat decomposition of the algebraic (affine) Grassmannian, and appealing to the "highest weight polytope" results for Borel-invariant varieties of Guillemin and Sjamaar and Goldberg.

We perform this computation on the affine Grassmannian of a complex semisimple group.

All genes on the human Y-chromosome were studied using fractal dimension and Shannon entropy. Clear outlier clusters were identified. Among these were 6 sequences that have since been withdrawn as CDSs and 1 additional sequence that is not in the current assembly. A methodology for ranking the sequences based on deviation from average values of FD and SE was developed. The group of sequences scored among the 10% largest deviations had abnormally high likelihood to be from centromeric or pseudoautosomal regions and low likelihood to be from X-chromosome transposed regions. lncRNA sequences were also enriched among the outliers. In addition, the number of expressed genes previously identified for evolutionary study tended to not have large deviations from the average.
Keywords: Y-chromosome; Shannon di-nucleotide entropy; fractal dimension; centromeric genes; gene degredation; lncRNA

We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are consistently explained with the suggested assignment.

A drastic decrease of the free carrier response is observed which involves an unusually large length scale of d$^{crit}\approx $20 nm in YBCO and d$^{crit}\approx $10 nm in LCMO. A corresponding suppression of metallicity is not observed in SLs where LCMO is replaced by the paramagnetic metal LaNiO$_{3}$. Our data suggest that either a long range charge transfer from the YBCO to the LCMO layers or alternatively a strong coupling of the charge carriers to the different and competitive kind of magnetic correlations in the LCMO and YBCO layers are at the heart of the observed metal/insulator transition. The low free carrier response observed in the far-infrared dielectric response of the magnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is possibly related to this effect.

In all these compounds Hc decreases below Tc and except for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 the change of Hc is of the same order of magnitude as the condensation energy. This observation supports the hypothesis that in multilayer HTCS superconductivity is considerably amplified by the interlayer tunnelling mechanism.

The gain in c axis kinetic energy accounts for a sizeable part of the condensation energy. We also observe phonon anomalies which suggest that the Josephson-currents lead to a drastic variation of the local electric field within the block of closely spaced CuO$_2$ planes.

The magnetic vortex lattice (VL) of polycrystalline MgB2 has been investigated by transverse-field muon-spin-relaxation (TF-MuSR). The evolution of TF-MuSR depolarization rate, sigma, that is proportional to the second moment of the field distribution of the VL has been studied as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The low temperature value s exhibits a pronounced peak near Hext = 75 mT. This behavior is characteristic of strong pinning induced distortions of the VL which put into question the interpretation of the low-field TF-MuSR data in terms of the magnetic penetration depth lambda(T). An approximately constant value of sigma, such as expected for an ideal VL in the London-limit, is observed at higher fields of Hext > 0.4 T. The TF-MuSR data at Hext = 0.6 T are analyzed in terms of a two-gap model. We obtain values for the gap size of D1 = 6.0 meV (2D1/kBTc = 3.6), D2 = 2.6 meV (2D2/kBTc = 1.6), a comparable spectral weight of the two bands and a zero temperature value for the magnetic penetration depth of lambda = 100 nm. In addition, we performed MuSR-measurements in zero external field (ZF-MuSR). We obtain evidence that the muon site (at low temperature) is located on a ring surrounding the center of the boron hexagon. Muon diffusion sets in already at rather low temperature of T > 10 K. The nuclear magnetic moments can account for the observed relaxation rate and no evidence for electronic magnetic moments has been obtained.

We review some previous studies concerning the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmons and present new ellipsometric data of the c-axis infrared response of almost optimally doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}. The c-axis conductivity of this compound exhibits the same kind of anomalies as that of underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta}. We analyze these anomalies in detail and show that they can be explained within a model involving the intra-bilayer Josephson effect and variations of the electric field inside the unit cell. The Josephson coupling energies of different bilayer compounds obtained from the optical data are compared with the condensation energies and it is shown that there is a reasonable agreement between the values of the two quantities. We argue that the Josephson coupling energy, as determined by the frequency of the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmon, represents a reasonable estimate of the change of the effective c-axis kinetic energy upon entering the superconducting state. It is further explained that this is not the case for the estimate based on the use of the simplest ``tight-binding'' sum rule. We discuss possible interpretations of the remarkable agreement between the Josephson coupling energies and the condensation energies. The most plausible interpretation is that the interlayer tunneling of the Cooper pairs provides the dominant contribution to the condensation energy of the bilayer compounds; in other words that the condensation energy of these compounds can be accounted for by the interlayer tunneling theory. We suggest an extension of this theory, which may also explain the high values of T_{c} in the single layer compounds Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6} and HgBa_{2}CuO_{4}, and we make several experimentally verifiable predictions.

FeGe_2, and lightly doped compounds based on it, have a Fermi surface driven instability which drive them into an incommensurate spin density wave state. Studies of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity have been used to determine the magnetic phase diagram of the pure material which displays an incommensurate phase at high temperatures and a commensurate structure below 263 K in zero field. Application of a magnetic field in the tetragonal basal plane decreases the range of temperatures over which the incommensurate phase is stable. We have used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the spin dynamics of FeGe_2. Despite the relatively isotropic transport the magnetic dynamics is quasi-one dimensional in nature. Measurements carried out on HET at ISIS have been used to map out the spin wave dispersion along the c-axis up the 400 meV, more than an order of magnitude higher than the zone boundary magnon for wavevectors in the basal plane.
