Abstract:
We calculate the anomalous part of the polarization tensor of Dirac fermions in $2+1$ dimensions in the presence of impurities described by the scattering rate $Γ$ for arbitrary external frequency and momenta. We consider two different versions of the Pauli--Villars subtractions and discuss their physical consequences.

Abstract:
It is known that Noncommutative QED (NCQED) exhibits Gribov ambiguities in the Landau gauge. These ambiguities are related to zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator and arise in the ghost propagator when it has a pole. In this work, we establish a positive Faddeev-Popov operator for NCQED and the condition for the ghost propagator not to have poles, the so-called Gribov no-pole condition. This c…

This condition is implemented in the path integral, and allows for the calculation of the photon propagator in momentum space, which is dependent on the squared non-commutativity parameter. In the commutative limit standard QED is recovered.

We address the issue of radiative corrections to Kaluza-Klein (KK) masses in five-dimensional QED supplemented by aether Lorentz-violating terms. Specifically, we compute the corrections to the KK photon masses from one fermion loop. In general, the KK masses receive radiative corrections due to breaking the five-dimensional Lorentz invariance by compactification. As we show, the presence of the additional Lorentz violating factor - an aether background, leads to the non-trivial modification of these corrections. This model may be of interest in addressing important phenomenological issues such as the relation between radiative corrected KK mass splitting of a particular mode and uncertainties in the measurements and/or possible spatial variation of the fine-structure constant. For the recent data on the fine-structure constant, we find a KK mass splitting of magnitude $\sim 0.01$ MeV for the first excited Kaluza-Klein gauge boson at TeV scale. On the other hand, the large KK modes limit displays a very interesting phenomenon, showing the very special role of the aether in protecting the higher modes from the quantum corrections.

The spectral properties of a set of local gauge-invariant composite operators are investigated in the $U(1)$ Higgs model quantized in the 't Hooft $R_ξ$ gauge. These operators enable us to give a gauge-invariant description of the spectrum of the theory, thereby surpassing certain incommodities when using the standard elementary fields. The corresponding two-point correlation functions are evaluated at one-loop order and their spectral functions are obtained explicitly. As expected, the above mentioned correlation functions are independent from the gauge parameter $ξ$, while exhibiting positive spectral densities as well as gauge-invariant pole masses corresponding to the massive photon and Higgs physical excitations.

We consider the unitary Abelian Higgs model and investigate its spectral functions at one-loop order. This analysis allows to disentangle what is physical and what is not at the level of the elementary particle propagators, in conjunction with the Nielsen identities. We highlight the role of the tadpole graphs and the gauge choices to get sensible results. We also introduce an Abelian Curci-Ferrari action coupled to a scalar field to model a massive photon which, like the non-Abelian Curci-Ferarri model, is left invariant by a modified non-nilpotent BRST symmetry. We clearly illustrate its non-unitary nature directly from the spectral function viewpoint. This provides a functional analogue of the Ojima observation in the canonical formalism: there are ghost states with nonzero norm in the BRST-invariant states of the Curci-Ferrari model.

We construct a vector gauge invariant transverse field configuration $V^H$, consisting of the well-known superfield $V$ and of a Stueckelberg-like chiral superfield. The dimension two gauge invariant non-local operator $A_{\min }^{2}$, obtained through the minimization of $\int d^4x A^2$ along the gauge orbit, allows to introduce a non-local gauge invariant configuration $A^h_μ$ which can be employed to built up a class of Euclidean massive Yang-Mills models useful to investigate non-perturbative infrared effects of confining theories. A fully local setup for both $A_{\min }^{2}$ and $A^{h}_μ$ can be achieved, resulting in a local and BRST invariant action which shares similarities with the Stueckelberg formalism. Though, unlike the case of the Stueckelberg action, the use of $A_{\min }^{2}$ gives rise to an all orders renormalizable action, a feature which will be illustrated by means of a class of covariant gauge fixings which, as much as 't Hooft's $R_ζ$-gauge of spontaneously broken gauge theories, provide a mass for the Stueckelberg field.

In this work, we compute some phenomenological bounds for the electromagnetic and massive gravitational high-derivative extensions supposing that it is possible to have an astrophysical process that generates simultaneously gravitational and electromagnetic waves. We present Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) higher-order derivative models, following the Myers-Pospelov approach, to electrodynamics and massive gravitational waves. We compute the corrected equation of motion of these models, their dispersion relations and the velocities. The LIV parameters for the gravitational and electromagnetic sectors, $ξ_{g}$ and $ξ_γ$, respectively, were also obtained for three different approaches: luminal photons, time delay of flight and the difference of graviton and photon velocities. These LIV parameters depend on the mass scales where the LIV-terms become relevant, $M$ for the electromagnetic sector and $M_{1}$ for the gravitational one. We obtain, using the values for $M$ and $M_{1}$ found in the literature, that $ξ_{g}\sim10^{-2}$, which is expected to be phenomenologically relevant and $ξ_γ\sim10^{3}$, which cannot be suitable for an effective LIV theory. However, we show that $ξ_γ$ can be interesting in a phenomenological point of view if $M\gg M_{1}$. Finally the relation between the variation of the velocities of the photon and the graviton in relation to the speed of light was calculated and resulted in $Δv_{g}/Δv_γ\lesssim1.82\times 10^{-3}$.

Abstract:
We introduce a Lorentz-symmetry violating extended quantum electrodynamics (QED) which preserves gauge symmetry. The extended fermionic sector can radiatively induce an extended effective action which simultaneously displays the same electromagnetic terms present in the Carroll-Field-Jackiw, Myers-Pospelov and Aether actions.
