We show that it is possible to observe the Hawking radiation emitted by small black holes assumed to form in catastrophic astrophysical events such as black hole mergers. Gamma ray bursts in the TeV range are unique footprints of these asteroid-mass black hole morsels ejected during the merger. The time delay of the gamma ray bursts from the gravitational wave event is correlated to the mass distribution of the morsels. The integrated mass of the morsels allowed by the unaccounted merger mass leads to a Hawking induced radiation in photons that is above the sensitivity of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes such as HESS, LHAASO and HAWC.

In a recent work [arXiv:2307.13489 [gr-qc]], we have described spherically symmetric and static quantum black holes as deformations of the classical Schwarzschild metric that depend on the physical distance to the horizon. We have developed a framework that allows to compute the latter in a self-consistent fashion from the deformed geometry, in the vicinity of the horizon. However, in this formalism, the distance can be replaced by other physical quantities, e.g. curvature invariants such as the Ricci- or Kretschmann scalar. Here, we therefore define a more general framework, which we call an "effective metric description" (EMD), that captures the deformed geometry based on a generic physical quantity. We develop in detail the Ricci- and Kretschmann scalar EMD, in particular demonstrating how to compute the geometry in a self-consistent manner. Moreover, we provide explicit relations that allow to express one EMD in terms of the others, thus demonstrating their equivalence.

Epidemiological models describe the spread of an infectious disease within a population. They capture microscopic details on how the disease is passed on among individuals in various different ways, while making predictions about the state of the entirety of the population. However, the type and structure of the specific model considered typically depend on the size of the population under consideration. To analyse this effect, we study a family of effective epidemiological models in space and time that are related to each other through scaling transformations. Inspired by a similar treatment of diffusion processes, we interpret the latter as renormalisation group transformations, both at the level of the underlying differential equations and their solutions. We show that in the large scale limit, the microscopic details of the infection process become irrelevant, safe for a simple real number, which plays the role of the infection rate in a basic compartmental model.

We reformulate models in epidemiology and population dynamics in terms of probability distributions. This allows us to construct the Fisher information, which we interpret as the metric of a one-dimensional differentiable manifold. For systems that can be effectively described by a single degree of freedom, we show that their time evolution is fully captured by this metric. In this way, we discover universal features across seemingly very different models. This further motivates a reorganisation of the dynamics around zeroes of the Fisher metric, corresponding to extrema of the probability distribution. Concretely, we propose a simple form of the metric for which we can analytically solve the dynamics of the system that well approximates the time evolution of various established models in epidemiology and population dynamics, thus providing a unifying framework.

By exploiting a dual description in terms of F-theory compactified on a toric Calabi-Yau threefold $X_{N,M}$, we establish numerous symmetries that leave the BPS partition function $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ invariant. They furthemore act in a non-perturbative fashion from the point of view of the low energy quiver gauge theory associated with the LST. We present different group theoretical organisations of these symmetries, thereby generalising the results of [arXiv:1811.03387] to the case of generic $M \geq 1$. We also provide a Mathematica package that allows to represent them in terms of matrices that act linearly on the Kähler parameters of $X_{N,M}$. From the perspective of dual realisations of the LSTs the symmetries found here act in highly nontrivial ways: as an example, we consider a formulation of $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ in terms of correlation functions of a vertex operator algebra, whose commutation relations are governed by an affine quiver algebra. We show the impact of the symmetry transformations on the latter and discuss invariance of $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ from this perspective for concrete examples.

Quantum gravity theories predict deformations of black hole solutions relative to their classical counterparts. A model-independent approach was advocated in \cite{Binetti:2022xdi} that uses metric deformations parametrised in terms of physical quantities, such as the proper distance. While such a description manifestly preserves the invariance of the space-time under coordinate transformations, concrete computations are hard to tackle since the distance is defined in terms of the deformed metric itself. In this work, for spherically symmetric and static metrics, we provide a self-consistent framework allowing us to compute the distance function in close vicinity to the event horizon of a black hole. By assuming a minimal degree of regularity at the horizon, we provide explicit (series) expansions of the metric. This allows us to compute important thermodynamical quantities of the black hole, such as the Hawking temperature and entropy, for which we provide model-independent expressions, beyond a large mass expansion. Moreover, imposing for example the absence of curvature singularities at the event horizon leads to non-trivial consistency conditions for the metric deformations themselves, which we find to be violated by some models in the literature.

We show that the instanton partition function of these theories can be written in terms of Kronecker-Eisenstein series, which in a particular limit of the deformation parameters of the $Ω$-background organise themselves into Greens functions of free scalar fields on a torus. We provide a concrete identification between (differences of) such propagators and Nekrasov subfunctions. The latter are also characterised by counting specific holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau threefold $X_{N,1}$ which engineers the LST. Furthermore, using the formulation of the partition function in terms of the Kronecker-Eisenstein series, we argue for new recursive structures which relate higher instanton contributions to products of lower ones.

We explore the quantum nature of black holes by introducing an effective framework that takes into account deviations from the classical results. The approach is based on introducing quantum corrections to the classical Schwarzschild geometry in a way that is consistent with the physical scales of the black hole and its classical symmetries. This is achieved by organizing the quantum corrections in inverse powers of a physical distance. By solving the system in a self-consistent way we show that the derived physical quantities, such as event horizons, temperature and entropy can be expressed in a well defined expansion in the inverse powers of the black hole mass. The approach captures the general form of the quantum corrections to black hole physics without requiring to commit to a specific model of quantum gravity.

We study the impact on the epidemiological dynamics of a class of restrictive measures that are aimed at reducing the number of contacts of individuals who have a higher risk of being infected with a transmittable disease. Such measures are currently either implemented or at least discussed in numerous countries worldwide to ward off a potential new wave of COVID-19 across Europe. They come in the form of Health Passes (HP), which grant full access to public life only to individuals with a certificate that proves that they have either been fully vaccinated, have recovered from a previous infection or have recently tested negative to SARS-Cov-19 . We develop both a compartmental model as well as an epidemic Renormalisation Group approach, which is capable of describing the dynamics over a longer period of time, notably an entire epidemiological wave. Introducing different versions of HPs in this model, we are capable of providing quantitative estimates on the effectiveness of the underlying measures as a function of the fraction of the population that is vaccinated and the vaccination rate. We apply our models to the latest COVID-19 wave in several European countries, notably Germany and Austria, which validate our theoretical findings.

Applying a ML approach to the temporal variability of the Spike protein sequence enables us to identify, classify and track emerging virus variants. Our analysis is unbiased, in the sense that it does not require any prior knowledge of the variant characteristics, and our results are validated by other informed methods that define variants based on the complete genome. Furthermore, correlating persistent variants of our approach to epidemiological data, we discover that each new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is driven and dominated by a new emerging variant. Our results are therefore indispensable for further studies on the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and the prediction of evolutionary patterns that determine current and future mutations of the Spike proteins, as well as their diversification and persistence during the viral spread. Moreover, our ML algorithm works as an efficient early warning system for the emergence of new persistent variants that may pose a threat of triggering a new wave of COVID-19. Capable of a timely identification of potential new epidemiological threats when the variant only represents 1% of the new sequences, our ML strategy is a crucial tool for decision makers to define short and long term strategies to curb future outbreaks. The same methodology can be applied to other viral diseases, influenza included, if sufficient sequencing data is available.

We propose a physical theory underlying the temporal evolution of competing virus variants that relies on the existence of (quasi) fixed points capturing the large time scale invariance of the dynamics. To motivate our result we first modify the time-honoured compartmental models of the SIR type to account for the existence of competing variants and then show how their evolution can be naturally re-phrased in terms of flow equations ending at quasi fixed points. As the natural next step we employ (near) scale invariance to organise the time evolution of the competing variants within the effective description of the epidemic Renormalization Group framework. We test the resulting theory against the time evolution of COVID-19 virus variants that validate the theory empirically.

Infectious diseases are a threat for human health with tremendous impact on our society at large. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, is the latest example of a highly infectious disease ravaging the world, since late 2019. It is therefore imperative to develop efficient mathematical models, able to substantially curb the damages of a pandemic by unveiling disease spreading dynamics and symmetries. This will help inform (non)-pharmaceutical prevention strategies. For the reasons above we wrote this report that goes at the heart of mathematical modelling of infectious disease diffusion by simultaneously investigating the underlying microscopic dynamics in terms of percolation models, effective description via compartmental models and the employment of temporal symmetries naturally encoded in the mathematical language of critical phenomena. Our report reviews these approaches and determines their common denominators, relevant for theoretical epidemiology and its link to important concepts in theoretical physics. We show that the different frameworks exhibit common features such as criticality and self-similarity under time rescaling. These features are naturally encoded within the unifying field theoretical approach. The latter leads to an efficient description of the time evolution of the disease via a framework in which (near) time-dilation invariance is explicitly realised. As important test of the relevance of symmetries we show how to mathematically account for observed phenomena such as multi-wave dynamics. The models presented here are of immediate relevance for different realms of scientific enquiry from medical applications to the understanding of human behaviour. Our review offers novel perspectives on how to model, capture, organise and understand epidemiological data and disease dynamics for modelling real-world phenomena.

In arXiv:1911.08172 we have studied the single-particle free energy of a class of Little String Theories of A-type, which are engineered by $N$ parallel M5-branes on a circle. To leading instanton order (from the perspective of the low energy $U(N)$ gauge theory) and partially also to higher order, a decomposition was observed, which resembles a Feynman diagrammatic expansion: external states are given by expansion coefficients of the $N=1$ BPS free energy and a quasi-Jacobi form that governs the BPS-counting of an M5-brane coupling to two M2-branes. The effective coupling functions were written as infinite series and similarities to modular graph functions were remarked. In the current work we continue and extend this study: Working with the full non-perturbative BPS free energy, we analyse in detail the cases $N=2,3$ and $4$. We argue that in these cases to leading instanton order all coupling functions can be written as a simple combination of two-point functions of a single free scalar field on the torus. We provide closed form expressions, which we conjecture to hold for generic $N$. To higher instanton order, we observe that a decomposition of the free energy in terms of higher point functions with the same external states is still possible but a priori not unique. We nevertheless provide evidence that tentative coupling functions are still combinations of scalar Greens functions, which are decorated with derivatives or multiplied with holomorphic Eisenstein series. We interpret these decorations as corrections of the leading order effective couplings and in particular link the latter to dihedral graph functions with bivalent vertices, which suggests an interpretation in terms of disconnected graphs.

We study a class of Little String Theories (LSTs) of A type, described by $N$ parallel M5-branes spread out on a circle and which in the low energy regime engineer supersymmetric gauge theories with $U(N)$ gauge group. The BPS states in this setting correspond to M2-branes stretched between the M5-branes. Generalising an observation made in arXiv:1706.04425, we provide evidence that the BPS counting functions of special subsectors of the latter exhibit a Hecke structure in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit, i.e. the different orders in an instanton expansion of the supersymmetric gauge theory are related through the action of Hecke operators. We extract $N$ distinct such reduced BPS counting functions from the full free energy of the LST with the help of contour integrals with respect to the gauge parameters of the $U(N)$ gauge group. Physically, the states captured by these functions correspond to configurations where the same number of M2-branes is stretched between some of these neighbouring M5-branes, while the remaining M5-branes are collapsed on top of each other and a particular singular contribution is extracted. The Hecke structures suggest that these BPS states form the spectra of symmetric orbifold CFTs. We furthermore show that to leading instanton order (in the NS-limit) the reduced BPS counting functions factorise into simpler building blocks. These building blocks are the expansion coefficients of the free energy for $N=1$ and the expansion of a particular function, which governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane with single M2-branes ending on it on either side. To higher orders in the instanton expansion, we observe new elements appearing in this decomposition, whose coefficients are related through a holomorphic anomaly equation.

We study the structure of the non-perturbative free energy of a one-parameter class of little string theories (LSTs) of A-type in the so-called unrefined limit. These theories are engineered by $N$ M5-branes probing a transverse flat space. By analysing a number of examples, we observe a pattern which suggests to write the free energy in a fashion that resembles a decomposition into higher-point functions which can be presented in a graphical way reminiscent of sums of (effective) Feynman diagrams: to leading order in the instanton parameter of the LST, the $N$ external states are given either by the fundamental building blocks of the theory with $N=1$, or the function that governs the counting of BPS states of a single M5-brane coupling to one M2-brane on either side. These states are connected via an effective coupling function which encodes the details of the gauge algebra of the LST and which in its simplest (non-trivial) form is captured by the scalar Greens function on the torus. More complicated incarnations of this function show certain similarities with so-called modular graph functions, which have appeared in the study of Feynman amplitudes in string- and field theory. Finally, similar structures continue to exist at higher instanton orders, which, however, also contain contributions that can be understood as the action of (Hecke) operators on the leading instanton result.

Extending the analysis of the companion paper, we discuss the part of the free energy that is sensitive to the details of the $\mathfrak{a}_{N-1}$ gauge structure, by computing explicit series expansions for the cases $N=2,3,4$. Based on these examples, we find a class of functions that we conjecture to resum whole sectors in the instanton expansion of the free energy and which combine in a natural manner its modular properties as well as the gauge symmetry. These functions have previously been introduced in the literature as the generating functions of multi-divisor sums and in the case $N=2$ can also be cast into the form of a generalised Eisenstein series. We use these resummed contributions to the free energy to perform a number of non-trivial consistency checks for our results.

We analyse the symmetries of a class of A-type little string theories that are engineered by $N$ parallel M5-branes with M2-branes stretched between them. This paper deals with the so-called reduced free energy, which only receives contributions from the subset of the BPS states that carry the same charges under all the Cartan generators of the underlying gauge algebra. We argue (and check explicitly in a number of examples) that the former is invariant under the paramodular group $Σ_N\subset Sp(4,\mathbb{Q})$, which gets extended to a subgroup of $Sp(4,\mathbb{R})$ in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili-limit. This extension agrees with the observation made in arXiv:1706.04425 that these BPS states form a symmetric orbifold CFT. Furthermore, we argue that $Σ_N$ (along with other symmetries) places strong constraints on the BPS counting function that governs the intersection between the M5- and M2-branes.

Recent studies (arXiv:1610.07916, arXiv:1711.07921, arXiv:1807.00186) of six-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories that are engineered by a class of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds $X_{N,M}$, have uncovered a vast web of dualities. In this paper we analyse consequences of these dualities from the perspective of the partition functions $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ (or the free energy $\mathcal{F}_{N,M}$) of these theories. Focusing on the case $M=1$, we find that the latter is invariant under the group $\mathbb{G}(N)\times S_N$: here $S_N$ corresponds to the Weyl group of the largest gauge group that can be engineered from $X_{N,1}$ and $\mathbb{G}(N)$ is a dihedral group, which acts in an intrinsically non-perturbative fashion and which is of infinite order for $N\geq 4$. We give an explicit representation of $\mathbb{G}(N)$ as a matrix group that is freely generated by two elements which act naturally on a specific basis of the Kähler moduli space of $X_{N,1}$. While we show the invariance of $\mathcal{Z}_{N,1}$ under $\mathbb{G}(N)\times S_N$ in full generality, we provide explicit checks by series expansions of $\mathcal{F}_{N,1}$ for a large number of examples. We also comment on the relation of $\mathbb{G}(N)$ to the modular group that arises due to the geometry of $X_{N,1}$ as a double elliptic fibration, as well as T-duality of Little String Theories that are constructed from $X_{N,1}$.

In this paper we analyse gauge theories that are engineered by these shifted toric web diagrams and argue that in specific limits, some of the them engineer five-dimensional quiver gauge theories with gauge group $G\subset U(N)$ and with fundamental and bi-fundamental matter. We discuss several examples in detail and describe how the matter sector is obtained from the six-dimensional parent theory.

The web of dual gauge theories engineered from a class of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds is explored. In previous work, we have argued for a triality structure by compiling evidence for the fact that every such manifold $X_{N,M}$ (for given $(N,M)$) engineers three a priori different, weakly coupled quiver gauge theories in five dimensions. The strong coupling regime of the latter is in general described by Little String Theories. Furthermore, we also conjectured that the manifold $X_{N,M}$ is dual to $X_{N',M'}$ if $NM=N'M'$ and $\text{gcd}(N,M)=\text{gcd}(N',M')$. Combining this result with the triality structure, we currently argue for a large number of dual quiver gauge theories, whose instanton partition functions can be computed explicitly as specific expansions of the topological partition function $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ of $X_{N,M}$. We illustrate this web of dual theories by studying explicit examples in detail. We also undertake first steps in further analysing the extended moduli space of $X_{N,M}$ with the goal of finding other dual gauge theories.

We discuss the formulation of classical field theoretical models on $n$-dimensional noncommutative space-time defined by a generic associative star product. A simple procedure for deriving conservation laws is presented and applied to field theories in noncommutative space-time to obtain local conservation laws (for the electric charge and for the energy-momentum tensor of free fields) and more generally an energy-momentum balance equation for interacting fields. For free field models an analogy with the damped harmonic oscillator in classical mechanics is pointed out, which allows us to get a physical understanding for the obtained conservation laws. To conclude, the formulation of field theories on curved noncommutative space is addressed.

We argue that the Kähler cone of $X_{N,M}$ admits three regions associated with weakly coupled quiver gauge theories of gauge groups $[U(N)]^M, [U(M)]^N$ and $[U(\frac{NM}{k})]^k$ where $k=\mbox{gcd}(N,M)$. These provide low-energy descriptions of different LSTs. The duality between the first two gauge theories is well known and is a consequence of the S-duality between D5- and NS5-branes or the T-duality of the LSTs. The triality involving the third gauge theory is new and we demonstrate it using several examples. We also discuss implications of this triality for the W-algebras associated with the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa dual theories.

Using the refined topological vertex formalism, we explicitly calculate a generic building block which allows to compute the topological string partition function of $X_{N,M}$ as a series expansion in different Kähler parameters. Using this result we give further explicit proof for a duality found previously in the literature, which relates $X_{N,M}\sim X_{N',M'}$ for $NM=N'M'$ and $\text{gcd}(N,M)=\text{gcd}(N',M')$.

These brane web configurations can be dualised into a class of toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds which have the structure of an elliptic fibration over (affine) $A_{N-1}$. We make this symmetry of $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ manifest in particular regions of the parameter space of the setup: we argue that for specific choices of the deformation parameters, the supercharges of the system acquire particular holonomy charges which lead to infinitely many cancellations among states contributing to the partition function. The resulting (simplified) $\mathcal{Z}_{N,M}$ can be written as a sum over weights forming a single irreducible representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{a}_{N-1}$ (or its affine counterpart). We show this behaviour explicitly for an extensive list of examples for specific values of $(N,M)$ and generalise the arising pattern for generic configurations. Finally, for a particular compact M5-brane setup we use this form of the partition function to make the duality $N\leftrightarrow M$ manifest.

New monodromy relations of loop amplitudes are derived in open string theory. We particularly study N-point one-loop amplitudes described by a world-sheet cylinder (planar and non-planar) and derive a set of relations between subamplitudes of different color orderings. Various consistency checks are performed by matching alpha'-expansions of planar and non-planar amplitudes involving elliptic iterated integrals with the resulting periods giving rise to two sets of multiple elliptic zeta values. The latter refer to the two homology cycles on the once-punctured complex elliptic curve and the monodromy equations provide relations between these two sets of multiple elliptic zeta values. Furthermore, our monodromy relations involve new objects for which we present a tentative interpretation in terms of open string scattering amplitudes in the presence of a non-trivial gauge field flux. Finally, we provide an outlook on how to generalize the new monodromy relations to the non-oriented case and beyond the one-loop level. Comparing a subset of our results with recent findings in the literature we find therein several serious issues related to the structure and significance of monodromy phases and the relevance of missed contributions from contour integrations.

We previously discussed the duality between the theories labelled by $(N,M)$ and $(M,N)$. In this work, we propose that these two are in fact only part of a larger web of dual theories. We provide evidence that the theories labelled by $(N,M)$ and $(\tfrac{NM}{k},k)$ are dual to each other, where $k=\text{gcd}(N,M)$. To argue for this duality, we use a geometric realization of these little string theories in terms of F-theory compactifications on toric, non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds $X_{N,M}$ which have a double elliptic fibration structure. We show explicitly for a number of examples that $X_{NM/k,k}$ is part of the extended moduli space of $X_{N,M}$, i.e. the two are related through symmetry transformations and flop transitions. By working out the full duality map, we provide a simple check at the level of the free energy of the little string theories.

These are realised in two different ways that are dual to each other: either as $M$ parallel M5-branes probing a transverse $A_{N-1}$ singularity or $N$ M5-branes probing an $A_{M-1}$ singularity. These backgrounds can further be dualised into toric, non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds $X_{N,M}$ which have double elliptic fibrations and thus give a natural geometric description of T-duality of the little string theories. The little string partition functions are captured by the topological string partition function of $X_{N,M}$. We analyse in detail the free energies $Σ_{N,M}$ associated with the latter in a special region in the Kähler moduli space of $X_{N,M}$ and discover a remarkable property: in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili-limit, $Σ_{N,M}$ is identical to $NM$ times $Σ_{1,1}$. This entails that the BPS degeneracies for any $(N,M)$ can uniquely be reconstructed from the $(N,M)=(1,1)$ configuration, a property we refer to as self-similarity. Moreover, as $Σ_{1,1}$ is known to display a number of recursive structures, BPS degeneracies of little string configurations for arbitrary $(N,M)$ as well acquire additional symmetries. These symmetries suggest that in this special region the two little string theories described above are self-dual under T-duality.

For both, the non-perturbative partition function can be written as an expansion of the topological string partition function of $X_N$ with respect to either of the two modular parameters. We analyze the resulting BPS counting functions in detail and find that they can be fully constructed as linear combinations of the BPS counting functions of M5-M2-brane configurations with non-compact transverse directions. For certain M2-brane configurations, we also find that the free energies in the two dual theories agree with each other, which points to a new correspondence between instanton and monopole configurations. These results are also a manifestation of T-duality between type IIa and IIb little string theories.

We analyse first order differential equations in the anti-holomorphic moduli of the theory, which relate the $F_{g,n}$ to other component couplings. From the point of view of the topological theory, these equations describe the contribution of non-physical states to twisted correlation functions and encode an obstruction for interpreting the $F_{g,n}$ as the free energy of the refined topological string theory. We investigate possibilities of lifting this obstruction by formulating conditions on the moduli dependence under which the differential equations simplify and take the form of generalised holomorphic anomaly equations. We further test this approach against explicit calculations in the dual heterotic theory.

For specific configurations, we propose that the counting functions of BPS bound-states of M-strings capture the elliptic genus of the moduli space of m-strings. We check this proposal for the known cases, the Taub-NUT and Atiyah-Hitchin spaces for which we find complete agreement. Furthermore, we analyze the modular properties of the M-string free energies, which do not transform covariantly under SL(2,Z). However, for a given number of M-strings, we find that there exists a unique combination of unrefined genus-zero free energies that transforms as a Jacobi form under a congruence subgroup of SL(2,Z). These combinations correspond to summing over different numbers of M5-branes and make sense only if the distances between them are all equal. We explain that this is a necessary condition for the m-string moduli space to be factorizable into relative and center-of-mass parts.

In this paper we study the four-point correlation function of the energy-momentum supermultiplet in theories with N=4 superconformal symmetry in four dimensions. We present a compact form of all component correlators as an invariant of a particular abelian subalgebra of the N=4 superconformal algebra. This invariant is unique up to a single function of the conformal cross-ratios which is fixed by comparison with the correlation function of the lowest half-BPS scalar operators. Our analysis is independent of the dynamics of a specific theory, in particular it is valid in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory for any value of the coupling constant. We discuss in great detail a subclass of component correlators, which is a crucial ingredient for the recent study of charge-flow correlations in conformal field theories. We compute the latter explicitly and elucidate the origin of the interesting relations among different types of flow correlations previously observed in arXiv:1309.1424.

We argue for a large class of theories that these approaches yield the same gauge theory partition function which we study in detail. To make their modular properties more tangible, we consider a fourth approach by connecting the partition function to the equivariant elliptic genus of R^4 through a (singular) theta-transform. We present a new approach to computing event shape distributions or, more precisely, charge flow correlations in a generic conformal field theory (CFT). These infrared finite observables are familiar from collider physics studies and describe the angular distribution of global charges in outgoing radiation created from the vacuum by some source. The charge flow correlations can be expressed in terms of Wightman correlation functions in a certain limit. We explain how to compute these quantities starting from their Euclidean analogues by means of a non-trivial analytic continuation which, in the framework of CFT, can elegantly be performed in Mellin space. The relation between the charge flow correlations and Euclidean correlation functions can be reformulated directly in configuration space, bypassing the Mellin representation, as a certain Lorentzian double discontinuity of the correlation function integrated along the cuts. We illustrate the general formalism in N=4 SYM, making use of the well-known results on the four-point correlation function of half-BPS scalar operators. We compute the double scalar flow correlation in N=4 SYM, at weak and strong coupling and show that it agrees with known results obtained by different techniques. One of the remarkable features of the N=4 theory is that the scalar and energy flow correlations are proportional to each other. Imposing natural physical conditions on the energy flow correlations (finiteness, positivity and regularity), we formulate additional constraints on the four-point correlation functions in N=4 SYM that should be valid at any coupling and away from the planar limit.

A worldsheet realization of the refined topological string is proposed in terms of physical string amplitudes that compute generalized N=2 F-terms of the form F_{g,n} W^{2g}Y^{2n} in the effective supergravity action. These terms involve the chiral Weyl superfield W and a superfield Y defined as an N=2 chiral projection of a particular anti-chiral T-bar vector multiplet. In Heterotic and Type I theories, obtained upon compactification on the six-dimensional manifold K3xT2, T is the usual Kähler modulus of the T2 torus. These amplitudes are computed exactly at the one-loop level in string theory. They are shown to reproduce the correct perturbative part of the Nekrasov partition function in the field theory limit when expanded around an SU(2) enhancement point of the string moduli space. The two deformation parameters epsilon_- and epsilon_+ of the Omega-supergravity background are then identified with the constant field-strength backgrounds for the anti-self-dual graviphoton and self-dual gauge field of the T-bar vector multiplet, respectively.

The considered massive fields are spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 fermions, as well as complex two-forms with first order kinetic terms. Consistency with six-dimensional gravitational anomalies of (1,0) and (2,0) theories is shown by interpreting the massive fields as excited Kaluza-Klein modes in a circle compactification. The results are in accordance with the geometric predictions of the M-theory to F-theory duality as well as the comparison with an explicit one-loop computation in heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x S^1.

With the aim to study six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal theories with non-Abelian tensor multiplets we propose a five-dimensional superconformal action with eight supersymmetries for an infinite tower of non-Abelian vector, tensor and hypermultiplets. It describes the dynamics of the complete spectrum of the (2,0) theories compactified on a circle coupled to an additional vector multiplet containing the circle radius and the Kaluza-Klein vector arising from the six-dimensional metric. All couplings are only given in terms of group theoretical constants and the Kaluza-Klein levels. After superconformal symmetry is reduced to Poincare supersymmetry we find a Kaluza-Klein inspired action coupling super-Yang-Mills theory to an infinite tower of massive non-Abelian tensors. We explore the possibility to restore sixteen supersymmetries by using techniques known from harmonic superspace. Namely, additional bosonic coordinates on a four-sphere are introduced to enhance the R-symmetry group. Maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and the Abelian (2,0) tensor theories are recovered as special cases of our construction. Finally, we comment on the generation of an anomaly balancing Wess-Zumino term for the R-symmetry vector at one loop.

The dynamics of chiral p-forms can be captured by a lower-dimensional parity-violating action motivated by a Kaluza-Klein reduction on a circle. The massless modes are (p-1)-forms with standard kinetic terms and Chern-Simons couplings to the Kaluza-Klein vector of the background metric. The massive modes are p-forms charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector and admit parity-odd first-order kinetic terms. Gauge invariance is implemented by a Stueckelberg-like mechanism using (p-1)-forms. A Chern-Simons term for the Kaluza-Klein vector is generated at one loop by massive p-form modes. These findings are shown to be consistent with anomalies and supersymmetry for six-dimensional supergravity theories with chiral tensor multiplets.

We study BPS saturated one-loop amplitudes in type II string theory compactified on K3 x T^2. The classes of amplitudes we consider are only sensitive to the very basic topological data of the internal K3 manifold. As a consequence, the integrands of the former are related to the elliptic genus of K3, which can be decomposed into representations of the internal N=4 superconformal algebra. Depending on the precise choice of external states these amplitudes capture either only the contribution of the short multiplets or the full series including intermediate multiplets. In the latter case we can define a generating functional for the whole class, which we show is given by the weight ten Igusa cusp form chi_{10} of Sp(4,Z). We speculate on possible algebraic implications of our result on the BPS states of the N=4 type II compactification.

We continue our study of algebraic properties of N=4 topological amplitudes in heterotic string theory compactified on T^2, initiated in arXiv:1102.1821. In this work we evaluate a particular one-loop amplitude for any enhanced gauge group h \subset e_8 + e_8, i.e. for arbitrary choice of Wilson line moduli. We show that a certain analytic part of the result has an infinite product representation, where the product is taken over the positive roots of a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra g^{++}. The latter is obtained through double extension of the complement g= (e_8 + e_8)/h. The infinite product is automorphic with respect to a finite index subgroup of the full T-duality group SO(2,18;Z) and, through the philosophy of Borcherds-Gritsenko-Nikulin, this defines the denominator formula of a generalized Kac-Moody algebra G(g^{++}), which is an 'automorphic correction' of g^{++}. We explicitly give the root multiplicities of G(g^{++}) for a number of examples.

In arXiv:0905.3629 we described a new class of N=2 topological amplitudes that depends both on vector and hypermultiplet moduli. Here we find that this class is actually a particular case of much more general topological amplitudes which appear at higher loops in heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x T^2. We analyze their effective field theory interpretation and derive particular (first order) differential equations as a consequence of supersymmetry Ward identities and the 1/2-BPS nature of the corresponding effective action terms. In string theory the latter get modified due to anomalous world-sheet boundary contributions, generalizing in a non-trivial way the familiar holomorphic and harmonicity anomalies studied in the past. We prove by direct computation that the subclass of topological amplitudes studied in arXiv:0905.3629 forms a closed set under these anomaly equations and that these equations are integrable.

It is shown that the supersymmetry-preserving automorphisms of any non-linear sigma-model on K3 generate a subgroup of the Conway group Co_1. This is the stringy generalisation of the classical theorem, due to Mukai and Kondo, showing that the symplectic automorphisms of any K3 manifold form a subgroup of the Mathieu group M_{23}. The Conway group Co_1 contains the Mathieu group M_{24} (and therefore in particular M_{23}) as a subgroup. We confirm the predictions of the Theorem with three explicit CFT realisations of K3: the T^4/Z_2 orbifold at the self-dual point, and the two Gepner models (2)^4 and (1)^6. In each case we demonstrate that their symmetries do not form a subgroup of M_{24}, but lie inside Co_1 as predicted by our Theorem.

The perturbative spectrum of BPS-states in the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory compactified on T^2 is analysed. We show that the space of BPS-states forms a representation of a certain Borcherds algebra G which we construct explicitly using an auxiliary conformal field theory. The denominator formula of an extension G_{ext} \supset G of this algebra is then found to appear in a certain heterotic one-loop N=4 topological string amplitude. Our construction thus gives an N=4 realisation of the idea envisioned by Harvey and Moore, namely that the `algebra of BPS-states' controls the threshold corrections in the heterotic string.
