The Arecibo Pisces-Perseus Supercluster Survey I: Harvesting ALFALFA

The aims of this program have been (1) to confirm the reality of some ALFALFA sources whose enigmatic nature suggest additional multiwavelength observations; (2) to probe the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, below the ALFALFA reliability limit; and (3) to explore the feasibility of using optical morphology, color and surface brightness to identify gas-rich objects in the region of the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster (PPS) whose HI fluxes are below the ALFALFA sensitivity limit at that distance. As expected, the reliability of ALFALFA detections depends strongly on the signal-to-noise ratio of the HI line signal and its coincidence with a probable stellar counterpart identified by its optical properties, suggestive of on-going star formation. The identification of low mass, star forming populations enables targeted HI line observations to detect galaxies with HI line fluxes below the ALFALFA sensitivity limits in fixed local volumes (D < 100 Mpc). The method explored here serves as the basis for extending the sample of gas-bearing objects as part of the on-going Arecibo Pisces-Perseus Supercluster Survey (APPSS). △ Less

We review the observing technique, data reduction pipeline, and catalog construction process, focusing… ▽ More We present the catalog of ~31500 extragalactic HI line sources detected by the completed ALFALFA survey out to z < 0.06 including both high signal-to-noise ratio (> 6.5) detections and ones of lower quality which coincide in both position and recessional velocity with galaxies of known redshift. We review the observing technique, data reduction pipeline, and catalog construction process, focusing on details of particular relevance to understanding the catalog's compiled parameters. We further describe and make available the digital HI line spectra associated with the catalogued sources. In addition to the extragalactic HI line detections, we report nine confirmed OH megamasers and ten OH megamaser candidates at 0.16 < z < 0.22 whose OH line signals are redshifted into the ALFALFA frequency band. Because of complexities in data collection and processing associated with the use of a feed-horn array on a complex single-dish antenna in the terrestrial radio frequency interference environment, we also present a list of suggestions and caveats for consideration by users of the ALFALFA extragalactic catalog for future scientific investigations. △ Less

Covering 40% of the final survey area, the alpha.40 catalog contains 15855 sources in the regions 07h30m < R.A. < 16h30m, +04 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +28 deg and 22h < R.A. < 03h, +14 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +32 deg. Of those, 15041 are certainly extragalactic, yielding a source density of 5.3 galaxies per square degree, a factor of 29 improvement over the catalog extracted from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey. In addition to the source centroid positions, HI line flux densities, recessional velocities and line widths, the catalog includes the coordinates of the most probable optical counterpart of each HI line detection, and a separate compilation provides a crossmatch to identifications given in the photometric and spectroscopic catalogs associated with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Fewer than 2% of the extragalactic HI line sources cannot be identified with a feasible optical counterpart; some of those may be rare OH megamasers at 0.16 < z < 0.25. A detailed analysis is presented of the completeness, width dependent sensitivity function and bias inherent in the current alpha.40 catalog. The impact of survey selection, distance errors, current volume coverage and local large scale structure on the derivation of the HI mass function is assessed. While alpha.40 does not yet provide a completely representative sampling of cosmological volume, derivations of the HI mass function using future data releases from ALFALFA will further improve both statistical and systematic uncertainties. △ Less

The faint outer regions of the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular galaxy: a much larger and undisturbed galaxy

Abstract: We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy using deep, wide-field, multicolour CCD photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and new deep HI observations. We study an area of ~0.6 square degrees centred on the Pegasus dwarf that was imaged by SDSS. Using effective filtering in colour-magnitude space we reduce the contamination by foreground Ga… ▽ More We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy using deep, wide-field, multicolour CCD photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and new deep HI observations. We study an area of ~0.6 square degrees centred on the Pegasus dwarf that was imaged by SDSS. Using effective filtering in colour-magnitude space we reduce the contamination by foreground Galactic field stars and increase significantly the contrast in the outer regions of the Pegasus dwarf. Our extended surface photometry, reaches down to a surface brightness magnitude mu_r~32 mag/sq.arcsec. It reveals a stellar body with a diameter of ~8 kpc that follows a Sersic surface brightness distribution law, which is composed of a significantly older stellar population than that observed in the ~2 kpc main body. The galaxy is at least five times more extended than listed in NED. The faint extensions of the galaxy are not equally distributed around its circumference; the north-west end is more jagged than the south-east end. We also identified a number of stellar concentrations, possibly stellar associations, arranged in a ring around the main luminous body. New HI observations were collected at the Arecibo Observatory as part of the ALFALFA survey. They reveal an HI distribution somewhat elongated in RA and about 0.3 deg. wide, with the region of highest column density coincident with the luminous galaxy. The HI rotation curve shows a solid-body rotation behaviour, with opposite ends differing by 15 km/s. There is a stream to lower velocities about 5 arcmin from the centre of the galaxy. We were able to measure ugriz colours in a number of apertures using the SDSS data and compared these with predictions of evolutionary synthesis models. (abridged) △ Less

LCDM Satellites and HI Companions - The Arecibo ALFA Survey of NGC 2903

The field size was 150 kpc x 260 kpc and the final velocity range spanned from 100 to 1133 km/s. The ALFA beams have been mapped as a function of azimuth and cleaned from each azimuth-specific cube prior to forming fi… ▽ More We have conducted a deep, complete HI survey, using Arecibo/ALFA, of a field centered on the nearby, isolated galaxy, NGC 2903, which is similar to the Milky Way in its properties. The field size was 150 kpc x 260 kpc and the final velocity range spanned from 100 to 1133 km/s. The ALFA beams have been mapped as a function of azimuth and cleaned from each azimuth-specific cube prior to forming final cubes. The final HI data are sensitive down to an HI mass of 2 x 10^5 Mo and column density of 2 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at the 3sigma x 2deltaV level, where sigma is the rms noise level and deltaV is the velocity resolution. NGC 2903 is found to have an HI envelope that is larger than previously known, extending to at least 3 times the optical diameter of the galaxy. Our search for companions yields one new discovery with an HI mass of 2.6 x 10^6 Mo. The companion is 64 kpc from NGC 2903 in projection, is likely associated with a small optical galaxy of similar total stellar mass, and is dark matter dominated, with a total mass >10^8 Mo. In the region surveyed, there are now two known companions: our new discovery and a previously known system that is likely a dwarf spheroidal, lacking HI content. If HI constitutes 1% of the total mass in all possible companions, then we should have detected 230 companions, according to LCDM predictions. Consequently, if this number of dark matter clumps are indeed present, then they contain less than 1% HI content, possibly existing as very faint dwarf spheroidals or as starless, gasless dark matter clumps. △ Less

HI content and other structural properties of galaxies in the Virgo cluster from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey

Abstract: We report the results of an HI blind survey of 80deg^2 of the Virgo cluster, based on the 08deg < delta < 16 deg strip of ALFALFA, the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey. 187 HI sources of high significance are found providing a complete census of HI sources in this region of the Virgo cluster (-1000<cz<3000 km/s) with M_HI > 10^7.5-8 M_sun. 156/187 (83%) sources are identified with optical galaxie… ▽ More We report the results of an HI blind survey of 80deg^2 of the Virgo cluster, based on the 08deg < delta < 16 deg strip of ALFALFA, the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey. 187 HI sources of high significance are found providing a complete census of HI sources in this region of the Virgo cluster (-1000<cz<3000 km/s) with M_HI > 10^7.5-8 M_sun. 156/187 (83%) sources are identified with optical galaxies from the Virgo Cluster Catalogue (Binggeli et al. 1985), all but 8 with late-type galaxies. Ten sources are not associated with optical galaxies and were found to correspond to tidally-disrupted systems (see Kent et al. 2007 and Haynes, Giovanelli and Kent 2007). The remaining 21 (11%) are associated with galaxies that are not listed in the Virgo Cluster Catalogue. For all sources with an optical counterpart in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we analyzed i-band SDSS plates to measure optical structural parameters. We find that in the Virgo cluster: i) HI inhabits galaxies that are structurally similar to ordinary late-type galaxies; ii) their HI content can be predicted from their optical luminosity; iii) low surface brightness galaxies have low optical luminosity and contain small quantities of neutral hydrogen; iv) low surface brightness, massive Malin1 type galaxies are comfortably rare objects (less than 0.5%); v) there are no "dark-galaxies" with HI masses M_HI > 10^7.5-8 M_sun; vi) less than 1% of early-type galaxies contain neutral hydrogen with M_HI>10^7.5-8 M_sun (di Serego Alighieri et al. 2007). △ Less

We report 488 detections over 135 square degrees, within the region of the sky having 22h<RA<03h and +26deg<Dec<+28deg. We present here the detections that have either (a) S/N>6.5, where the reliability of the catalog is better than 95% or (b) 5.0<S/N<6.5 and a previously measured redshift that corroborates our detection. Of the 488 objects presented here, 49 are High Velocity Clouds or clumps thereof with negative heliocentric recession velocities. These clouds are mostly very compact and isolated, while some of them are associated with large features such as Wright's Cloud or the northern extension of the Magellanic Stream. The remaining 439 candidate detections are identified as extragalactic objects and have all been matched with optical counterparts. Five of the six galaxies detected with M(HI)<10^7.5 solar masses are satellites of either the NGC672/IC1727 nearby galaxy pair or their neighboring dwarf irregular galaxy NGC784. The data of this catalog release include a slice through the Pisces-Perseus foreground void, a large nearby underdensity of galaxies. We report no detections within the void, where our catalog is complete for systems with HI masses of 10^8 solar masses. Gas-rich, optically-dark galaxies do not seem to constitute an important void population, and therefore do not suffice at producing a viable solution to the void phenomenon. △ Less

Abstract: We present the first installment of HI sources extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) extragalactic survey, initiated in 2005. Sources have been extracted from 3-D spectral data cubes and then examined interactively to yield global HI parameters. A total of 730 HI detections are catalogued within the solid angle 11h44m < R.A.(J2000) < 14h00m and +12deg < Dec.(J2000) < +16deg, and… ▽ More We present the first installment of HI sources extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) extragalactic survey, initiated in 2005. Sources have been extracted from 3-D spectral data cubes and then examined interactively to yield global HI parameters. A total of 730 HI detections are catalogued within the solid angle 11h44m < R.A.(J2000) < 14h00m and +12deg < Dec.(J2000) < +16deg, and redshift range -1600 \kms < cz < 18000 \kms. In comparison, the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) detected 40 HI signals in the same region. Optical counterparts are assigned via examination of digital optical imaging databases. ALFALFA HI detections are reported for three distinct classes of signals: (a) detections, typically with S/N > 6.5; (b) high velocity clouds in the Milky Way or its periphery; and (c) signals of lower S/N (to ~ 4.5) which coincide spatially with an optical object of known similar redshift. Although this region of the sky has been heavily surveyed by previous targeted observations based on optical flux-- or size-- limited samples, 69% of the extracted sources are newly reported HI detections. The resultant positional accuracy of HI sources is 20" (median). The median redshift of the sample is ~7000 \kms and its distribution reflects the known local large scale structure including the Virgo cluster. Several extended HI features are found in the vicinity of the Virgo cluster. A small percentage (6%) of HI detections have no identifiable optical counterpart, more than half of which are high velocity clouds in the Milky Way vicinity; the remaining 17 objects do not appear connected to or associated with any known galaxy. △ Less

The survey is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments to higher sensitivity, higher velocity resolution and higher spatial resolution than previous fully sampled, 21 cm multibeam surveys. The emphasi… ▽ More The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) is one of several HI surveys utilising the new Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) fitted to the 305m radio telescope at Arecibo. The survey is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments to higher sensitivity, higher velocity resolution and higher spatial resolution than previous fully sampled, 21 cm multibeam surveys. The emphasis is on making detailed observations of nearby objects although the large system bandwidth (100 MHz) will allow us to quantify the HI properties over a large instantaneous velocity range. In this paper we describe the survey and its goals and present the results from the precursor observations of a 5 degree x 1 degree region containing the nearby (~10 Mpc) NGC 628 group. We have detected all the group galaxies in the region including the low mass (M{HI}~10^7Mo) dwarf, dw0137+1541 (Briggs, 1986). The fluxes and velocities for these galaxies compare well with previously published data. There is no intra-group neutral gas detected down to a limiting column density of 2x10^{18}cm^{-2}. In addition to the group galaxies we have detected 22 galaxies beyond the NGC 628 group, 9 of which are previously uncatalogued.(Abridged) △ Less

Abstract: In preparation for the full Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA extragalactic HI survey, precursor observations were carried out in Aug--Sep 2004 with the 7-beam Arecibo L-band feed array (ALFA) receiver system and the WAPP spectral processors. While these observations were geared mainly at testing and debugging survey strategy, hardware and software, approximately 36 hours of telescope time yielded scienc… ▽ More In preparation for the full Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA extragalactic HI survey, precursor observations were carried out in Aug--Sep 2004 with the 7-beam Arecibo L-band feed array (ALFA) receiver system and the WAPP spectral processors. While these observations were geared mainly at testing and debugging survey strategy, hardware and software, approximately 36 hours of telescope time yielded science--quality data. From those observations, an initial list of 730 tentative detections of varying degree of reliability was extracted. Ninety--eight high signal-to-noise candidates were deemed to be bona fide HI line detections. To test our ability to discriminate cosmic signals from RFI and noise, 165 candidates ranging in reliability likelihood were re--observed with the single beam L--band wide system at Arecibo in Jan--Feb 2005. Of those, 41% were confirmed as real. We present the results of both the ALFA and single beam observations for the sample of 166 confirmed HI sources, as well as our assessment of their optical counterparts. Of the 166 sources, 62 coincide with previously known HI sources, while optical redshifts were available for an additional 18 galaxies; thus, 52% of the redshifts reported here were previously unknown. Of the 166 HI detections, 115 are identified with previously cataloged galaxies, of either known or unknown redshift, leaving 51 objects identified for the first time. Because of the higher sensitivity of the Arecibo system, fewer than 10% of the 166 HI sources would have been detected by a HIPASS--like survey of the same region. Three of the objects have HI masses less than 10^7 solar masses. The full ALFALFA survey which commenced in February 2005 should detect more than 100 times as many objects of similarly low HI mass over the next 5 years. △ Less

Mini High Velocity Clouds

We call these clouds ``mini-HVC'' to distinguish them from the larger and denser Compact High Velocity Clouds (CHVC). Peak column densities are typically a few X 10^18 cm^-2 averaged over the Arecibo 3.2' beam, and diameters to our detection limit ~ 10^18 cm^-2 range from 9' to 35'. These column densities and angular diameters overlap with those for CHVC, but are typically smaller. We consider three possiblities: (1) that most mini-HVC are related to the Magellanic Stream, (2) that most mini-HVC are part of M31's retinue of CHVC, or (3) that the mini-HVC are simply the low column density tail of the distribution of CHVC. None of these possibilities can be rejected as yet, given the selection biases in our sample. We also discuss controversies about the amount of ionized hydrogen in CHVC and mini-HVC, which may be mainly ionized, and the implications of these small clouds for Lyman Limit Systems. △ Less

Approximately half the sample proved to have one or more small, low column density star-free companion clouds, either detached or appearing as an appendage in our maps, at resolution of order 4 kpc. Comparison is made to a sample of similarly mapped field BCD galaxies drawn from the literature; however, the Virgo cluster sample of mapped BCDs is still too small for conclusive comparisons to be made. We found, on the one hand, little or no evidence for ram pressure strip** nor, on the other, for extremely extended low column density HI envelopes. The HI rotation curves in most cases rise approximately linearly, and slowly, as far out as we can trace the gas. △ Less

High Velocity Cloud Edges and Mini-HVCs

Abstract: Arecibo map** is reported of the neutral hydrogen distribution along selected directions out from the centers of two small High Velocity Clouds (HVC), W486 and W491. Both HVCs have a small inner region where the neutral hydrogen column density N_HI decreases slowly and a larger outer region where N_HI declines more rapidly, smoothly and exponentially from ~ 2 X 10^19 atoms cm^-2 down to < 10^1… ▽ More Arecibo map** is reported of the neutral hydrogen distribution along selected directions out from the centers of two small High Velocity Clouds (HVC), W486 and W491. Both HVCs have a small inner region where the neutral hydrogen column density N_HI decreases slowly and a larger outer region where N_HI declines more rapidly, smoothly and exponentially from ~ 2 X 10^19 atoms cm^-2 down to < 10^18 atoms cm^-2. Line widths, and presumably temperature and turbulence, do not increase in the outermost regions. Therefore pressure decreases smoothly, making confinement by dark matter gravity more likely than confinement by external pressure. The more extended HVC, W491, has a superimposed small cloud (which we dub a ``mini-HVC''), offset by 66 km s^-1 in velocity along the line of sight with peak column density about 5 X 10^18 atoms cm^-2. Preliminary data toward future map** of two more HVCs reveals two more mini-HVCs of similarly small size and central column density a bit less than 1 X 10^19 atoms cm^-2. We suggest that these three mini-HVCs are not physically associated with the HVCs on which they are superimposed, but are either very small outlyers of the extended Magellanic Stream HVC complex or more distant and/or smaller isolated CHVCs. The value of N_HI at the point where the neutral and ionized column densities are equal is ~ 2 X 10^19 atoms cm^-2 for the two mapped HVCs. Therefore the angular scalelength of the total hydrogen is appreciably larger than the observed HI scalelength. Previous distance estimates, related to absolute size and mass of the total hydrogen cloud, may have to be scaled down because of the undetected, more extended ionized hydrogen. △ Less

The Fine Structure and Outskirts of DDO 154

Our results show a truncation (or temporary drop) of the HI disk at a column density around 10^19 atoms cm^-2, consistent with theoretical expectations for the truncation produced by the extragalactic UV field. We also detect a marginally… ▽ More Map** of the HI disk of the isolated irregular galaxy DDO 154 with the C array of the Very Large Array and with the 3.2' upgraded Arecibo beam is presented. Our results show a truncation (or temporary drop) of the HI disk at a column density around 10^19 atoms cm^-2, consistent with theoretical expectations for the truncation produced by the extragalactic UV field. We also detect a marginally significant levelling off of the HI distribution along the continuation of the major axis at a column density near 2X10^18 atoms cm^-2. The VLA results show that the gas beyond ~6' in radius must be relatively smooth, with no structure larger in size than ~300 pc exhibiting a density contrast of a factor of 10 or more. However, there is considerable few-hundred-parsec scale structure in the gas disk at smaller radii, even well outside the regions where there are visible stars. Two prominent cavities well removed from any significant stellar populations are studied. While the energies required for evacuation are consistent with those produced by multiple supernovae, there is no visible trace of stars within a kpc of the center of the larger cavity, and the smaller of the two cavities is centered just outside the 26.5 mag arcsec^-2 B isophote. The velocity dispersion of the gas, measured within our 270 pc beam, is 7 to 8 km s^-1 throughout the disk (to 6' radius). This translates to a scaleheight of ~700 pc at the point where the rotation curve flattens, at a radius of ~4.5 kpc. Velocity profiles are well fit by single gaussians at all points. △ Less

Dark Matter and Gas Concentrations in the NGC 4532 / DDO 137 System

The HI masses of the three concentrations do not appear to be sufficient for them to be self-gravitating; however, their HImasses and dynamical masses are very similar to those of faint Im galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The peak HI column density of each of the clouds is close to the star formation threshold, but CCD images in B and R reveal no trace of stars nor star formation. If the system is gravitationally bound and in Virial equilibrium, we find its total mass to be ten times that within the outermost HI contours of the individual galaxies and clouds. Thirty-seven percent of the total HI lies outside the boundaries of the individual galaxies as determined by the VLA map**; 28% cannot be ascribed to either galaxy nor to the discrete concentrations. One possible way to account for the velocity field and the large quantity of diffuse gas is to assume that DDO 137, the gas concentrations and other apparent tidal features are due to gas infall into clumps within the dark matter potential of the group, and that prior to the interaction the group consisted of an irregular galaxy (NGC 4532) and a large, star-poor HI cloud like HI 1225+01 (Giovanelli et al. 1991). △ Less

MCG+00-32-16: An Irregular Galaxy Close to the Lowest Redshift Absorber on the 3C 273 Line of Sight

Correlation Statistics of Irregular and Spiral Galaxies Mapped in HI

Abstract: Several measures of galaxy size and mass obtained from the neutral hydrogen map** of 70 dwarf irregular galaxies presented in Paper I (Hoffman et al. 1996) are compared statistically to those for the set of all available HI-mapped dwarfs and HI-mapped spirals distributed within the same spatial volume to investigate variations in Tully-Fisher relations and in surface densities as functions of… ▽ More Several measures of galaxy size and mass obtained from the neutral hydrogen map** of 70 dwarf irregular galaxies presented in Paper I (Hoffman et al. 1996) are compared statistically to those for the set of all available HI-mapped dwarfs and HI-mapped spirals distributed within the same spatial volume to investigate variations in Tully-Fisher relations and in surface densities as functions of galaxy size and luminosity or mass. Some ambiguities due to the ``non-commutativity'' of the correlations among the variables are addressed and linear regressions of logarithms of blue luminosity, HI and optical radii, velocity profile half-width incorporating rotation and random motions, HI mass, and indicative dynamical mass are presented and analyzed. The surface density of HI is almost constant along the sequence of size/mass/luminosity while surface density of blue luminosity increases with galaxy size. For quantities not involving HI we find no evidence for a ``break'' between dwarfs and spirals, but we do find some curvature in velocity vs. radius and in the Tully-Fisher relation. There is an indication for a difference in the correlations involving HI mass or radius between dwarfs alone and spirals alone, in the sense that irregulars have somewhat more HI mass or slightly larger HI radii than spirals at a given blue luminosity, optical radius, or velocity profile width. △ Less

The galaxies were selected either from the Virgo Cluster Catalog, from similarly identified field galaxies, or from a distance-limited sample within the Arecibo declination range.
