The Nadler-Quinn problem for simplicial inverse systems
Abstract: We show that if $X$ is an arc-like continuum which can be represented as an inverse limit of a simplicial inverse system on arcs, then for every point $x \in X$ there is a plane embedding of $X$ in which $x$ is accessible. This answers a special case of the Nadler-Quinn question from 1972.

Radial departures and plane embeddings of arc-like continua
Abstract: We study the problem of Nadler and Quinn from 1972, which asks whether, given an arc-like continuum $X$ and a point $x \in X$, there exists an embedding of $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for which $x$ is an accessible point. We develop the notion of a radial departure of a map $f \colon [-1,1] \to [-1,1]$, and establish a simple criterion in terms of the bonding maps in an inverse system on intervals to sh… ▽ More

Smooth fans that are endpoint rigid
Abstract: Let $X$ be a smooth fan and denote its set of endpoints by $E(X)$. Let $E$ be one of the following spaces: the natural numbers, the irrational numbers, or the product of the Cantor set with the natural numbers. We prove that there is a smooth fan $X$ such that $E(X)$ is homeomorphic to $E$ and for every homeomorphism $h \colon X \to X$, the restriction of $h$ to $E(X)$ is the identity. On the othe… ▽ More

Shortest paths in arbitrary plane domains
Abstract: Let $Ω$ be a connected open set in the plane and $γ: [0,1] \to \overlineΩ$ a path such that $γ((0,1)) \subset Ω$. We show that the path $γ$ can be ``pulled tight'' to a unique shortest path which is homotopic to $γ$, via a homotopy $h$ with endpoints fixed whose intermediate paths $h_t$, for $t \in [0,1)$, satisfy $h_t((0,1)) \subset Ω$. We prove this result even in the case when there is no path… ▽ More

A complete classification of hereditarily equivalent plane continua
Abstract: A continuum is hereditarily equivalent if it is homeomorphic to each of its non-degenerate sub-continua. We show in this paper that the arc and the pseudo-arc are the only non-degenerate hereditarily equivalent plane continua.

Extension of isotopies in the plane
Abstract: Let $A$ be any plane set. It is known that a holomorphic motion $h: A \times \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{C}$ always extends to a holomorphic motion of the entire plane. It was recently shown that any isotopy $h: X \times [0,1] \to \mathbb{C}$, starting at the identity, of a plane continuum $X$ also extends to an isotopy of the entire plane. Easy examples show that this result does not generalize to all… ▽ More

Homogeneity degree of fans
Abstract: The homogeneity degree of a topological space $X$ is the number of orbits of the action of the homeomorphism group of $X$ on $X$. We initiate a study of dendroids of small homogeneity degree, beginning with fans. We classify all smooth fans of homogeneity degree $3$, and discuss non-smooth fans and prove some results on degree $4$.

A fixed-point-free map of a tree-like continuum induced by bounded valence maps on trees
Abstract: Towards attaining a better working understanding of fixed points of maps of tree-like continua, Oversteegen and Rogers constructed a tree-like continuum with a fixed-point-free self-map, described explicitly in terms of inverse limits. Specifically, they developed a sequence of trees $T_n$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and maps $f_n$ and $g_n$ from $T_{n+1}$ to $T_n$ for each $n$, such that the $g_n$ maps i… ▽ More

A complete classification of homogeneous plane continua
Abstract: We show that every non-degenerate homogeneous plane continuum is homeomorphic to either the unit circle, the pseudo-arc, or the circle of pseudo-arcs. It follows that any planar homogenous compactum has the form $X \times Z$, where $X$ is a either a point or one of these three homogeneous plane continua, and $Z$ is a finite set or the Cantor set. The main technical result in this paper is a new ch… ▽ More

A canonical parameterization of paths in $\mathbb{R}^n$
Abstract: For sufficiently tame paths in $\mathbb{R}^n$, Euclidean length provides a canonical parametrization of a path by length. In this paper we provide such a parametrization for all continuous paths. This parametrization is based on an alternative notion of path length, which we call $\mathsf{len}$. Like Euclidean path length, $\mathsf{len}$ is invariant under isometries of $\mathbb{R}^n$, is monotone… ▽ More

Lelek's problem is not a metric problem
Abstract: We show that Lelek's problem on the chainability of continua with span zero is not a metric problem: from a non-metric counterexample one can construct a metric one.
