Structural and ion-ordering phase transitions limit the viability of sodium-ion intercalation materials in grid scale battery storage by reducing their lifetime. However, the combination of phenomena in nanoparticulate electrodes creates complex behavior that is difficult to investigate, especially on the single nanoparticle scale under operating conditions. In this work, operando single-particle x-ray diffraction (oSP-XRD) is used to observe single-particle rotation, interlayer spacing, and layer misorientation in a functional sodium-ion battery. oSP-XRD is applied to Na$_{2/3}$[Ni$_{1/3}$Mn$_{2/3}$]O$_{2}$, an archetypal P2-type sodium-ion positive electrode material with the notorious P2-O2 phase transition induced by sodium (de)intercalation. It is found that during sodium extraction, the misorientation of crystalline layers inside individual particles increases before the layers suddenly align just prior to the P2-O2 transition. The increase in the long-range order coincides with an additional voltage plateau signifying a phase transition prior to the P2-O2 transition. To explain the layer alignment, a model for the phase evolution is proposed that includes a transition from localized to correlated Jahn-Teller distortions. The model is anticipated to guide further characterization and engineering of sodium-ion intercalation materials with P2-O2 type transitions. oSP-XRD therefore opens a powerful avenue for revealing complex phase behavior in heterogeneous nanoparticulate systems.

The relationship between charge and structure dictates the properties of electrochemical systems. For example, reversible Na-ion intercalation - a low-cost alternative to Li-ion technology - often induces detrimental structural phase transformations coupled with charge compensation reactions. However, little is known about the underpinning charge-structure mechanisms because the reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions within coexisting structural phases have so far eluded direct operando investigation. Here, we distinguish x-ray spectra of individual crystalline phases operando during a redox-induced phase transformation in P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 - an archetypal layered oxide for sodium-ion batteries. We measure the resonant elastic scattering on the Bragg reflection corresponding to the P2-phase lattice spacing. These resonant spectra become static midway through the sodium extraction in an operando coin cell, while the overall sodium extraction proceeds as evidenced by the X-ray absorption averaging over all electrochemically active Ni atoms. The stop of redox activity in the P2-structure signifies its inability to host Ni4+ ions. The coincident emergence of the O2- structure reveals the rigid link between the local redox and the long-range order during the phase transformation. The structure-selective x-ray spectroscopy thus opens a powerful avenue for resolving the dynamic chemistry of different structural phases in multi-phase electrochemical systems.

Non-equilibrium defects often dictate macroscopic functional properties of materials. In intercalation hosts, widely used in rechargeable batteries, high-dimensional defects largely define reversibility and kinetics1,2,3,4. However, transient defects briefly appearing during ionic transport have been challenging to capture, limiting the understanding of their life cycle and impact. Here, we overcome this challenge and track operando the interaction and impact of metastable defects within NaxNi1-xMnyO2 intercalation hosts in a charging sodium-ion battery. Three-dimensional coherent X-ray imaging3,4,5 reveals transformation and self-healing of a metastable domain boundary, glissile dislocation loop, and stacking fault. A local strain gradient suggests a quantifiable difference in ion diffusion, coincident with the macroscopic change in diffusion coefficient. Analysis of the unexpected4,6 defect anisotropy highlights the importance of mesostructure, suggesting a possible control approach and disputing the rigidity of the framework layers. The shared nature of oxygen framework layers makes our results applicable to a wide range of intercalation materials.

We conduct laboratory experiments on the time evolution of an ice layer cooled from below and subjected to a turbulent shear flow of warm water from above. Our study is motivated by observations of warm water intrusion into the ocean cavity under Antarctic ice shelves, accelerating the melting of their basal surfaces. The strength of the applied turbulent shear flow in our experiments is represented in terms of its Reynolds number $\textit{Re}$, which is varied over the range $2.0\times10^3 \le \textit{Re} \le 1.0\times10^4$. Depending on the water temperature, partial transient melting of the ice occurs at the lower end of this range of $\textit{Re}$ and complete transient melting of the ice occurs at the higher end. Following these episodes of transient melting, the ice reforms at a rate that is independent of $\textit{Re}$. We fit our experimental measurements of ice thickness and temperature to a one-dimensional model for the evolution of the ice thickness in which the turbulent heat transfer is parameterized in terms of the friction velocity of the shear flow. The melting mechanism we investigate in our experiments can easily account for the basal melting rate of Pine Island Glacier ice shelf inferred from observations.

The Web has made it possible to harness human cognition en masse to achieve new capabilities. Some of these successes are well known; for example Wikipedia has become the go-to place for basic information on all things; Duolingo engages millions of people in real-life translation of text, while simultaneously teaching them to speak foreign languages; and fold.it has enabled public-driven scientific discoveries by recasting complex biomedical challenges into popular online puzzle games. These and other early successes hint at the tremendous potential for future crowd-powered capabilities for the benefit of health, education, science, and society. In the process, a new field called Human Computation has emerged to better understand, replicate, and improve upon these successes through scientific research. Human Computation refers to the science that underlies online crowd-powered systems and was the topic of a recent visioning activity in which a representative cross-section of researchers, industry practitioners, visionaries, funding agency representatives, and policy makers came together to understand what makes crowd-powered systems successful. Teams of experts considered past, present, and future human computation systems to explore which kinds of crowd-powered systems have the greatest potential for societal impact and which kinds of research will best enable the efficient development of new crowd-powered systems to achieve this impact. This report summarize the products and findings of those activities as well as the unconventional process and activities employed by the workshop, which were informed by human computation research.

We present an algorithm, "CrowdSense," that works in an online fashion to dynamically sample subsets of labelers based on an exploration/exploitation criterion. The algorithm produces a weighted combination of a subset of the labelers' votes that approximates the crowd's opinion.

The growing need to manage and exploit the proliferation of online data sources is opening up new opportunities for bringing people closer to the resources they need. For instance, consider a recommendation service through which researchers can receive daily pointers to journal papers in their fields of interest. We survey some of the known approaches to the problem of technical paper recommendation and ask how they can be extended to deal with multiple information sources. More specifically, we focus on a variant of this problem - recommending conference paper submissions to reviewing committee members - which offers us a testbed to try different approaches. Using WHIRL - an information integration system - we are able to implement different recommendation algorithms derived from information retrieval principles. We also use a novel autonomous procedure for gathering reviewer interest information from the Web. We evaluate our approach and compare it to other methods using preference data provided by members of the AAAI-98 conference reviewing committee along with data about the actual submissions.
