We consider the Cauchy problem of a system of quadratic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations which was introduced by M. Colin and T. Colin (2004) as a model of laser-plasma interaction. For the nonperiodic setting, the authors proved some well-posedness results, which contain the scaling critical case for $d\geq 2$. In the present paper, we prove the well-posedness of this system for the periodic setting. In particular, well-posedness is proved at the scaling critical regularity for $d\geq 3$ under some conditions for the coefficients of the Laplacian. We also prove some ill-posedness results. As long as we use an iteration argument, our well-posedness results are optimal except for some critical cases.

The aim of this paper is to give existence and uniqueness results for solutions of the Cauchy problem for semilinear heat equations on stratified Lie groups $\mathbb{G}$ with the homogeneous dimension $N$. Since stratified Lie groups $\mathbb{G}$ include the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ as an example, our results are an extension of the existence and uniqueness results obtained by F. Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$ to $\mathbb{G}$. It should be noted that our proof is very different from it given by Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$. We adopt the generalized fractional chain rule on $\mathbb{G}$ to obtain the estimate for the nonlinear term, which is very different from the paracomposition technique adopted by Ribaud on ${\mathbb R}^n$. By using the generalized fractional chain rule on $\mathbb{G}$, we can avoid the discussion of Fourier analysis on $\mathbb{G}$ and make the proof more simple.

Moreover, we investigate the more detailed large time behavior and obtain a lower bound of the $L^{\infty}$-norm of the solution. As a result, we prove that the given decay rate $t^{-\frac{3}{4}}$ of the solution to be optimal. Furthermore, combining the techniques used for the parabolic equations and for the Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger equation, we derive the explicit asymptotic profile for the solution.

We present the first direct measurement of the atomic mass of a superheavy nuclide. Atoms of $^{257}$Db ($Z$=105) were produced online at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science using the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{208}$Pb($^{51}$V, 2n)$^{257}$Db. The gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II was used to suppress both the unreacted primary beam and some transfer products, prior to delivering the energetic beam of $^{257}$Db ions to a helium gas-filled ion stop** cell wherein they were thermalized. Thermalized $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ ions were then transferred to a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph for mass analysis. An alpha particle detector embedded in the ion time-of-flight detector allowed disambiguation of the rare $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ time-of-flight detection events from background by means of correlation with characteristic $α$-decays. The extreme sensitivity of this technique allowed a precision atomic mass determination from 11 events. The mass excess was determined to be $100\,063(231)_\textrm{stat}(132)_\textrm{sys}$~keV/c$^2$. Comparing to several mass models, we show the technique can be used to unambiguously determine the atomic number as $Z$=105 and should allow similar evaluations for heavier species in future work.

In this paper, we consider the nonlinearity $G$ of the polynomial \[
G(z)=G(z_1,\cdots,z_{2(γ+1)})
:=\sum_{m\le |α|\le l}C_αz^α, \] for $z\in \mathbb{C}^{2(γ+1)}$, where $m,l\in\mathbb{N}$ with $3\le m\le l$ and $C_α\in \mathbb{C}$ with $α\in (\mathbb{N}\cup \{0\})^{2(γ+1)}$ is a constant. The purpose of the present paper is to prove well-posedness of the problem (\ref{0-1}) in the lower order Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ or with more general nonlinearities than previous results. Our proof of the main results is based on the contraction map** principle on a suitable function space employed by D. Pornnopparath (2018). To obtain the key linear and bilinear estimates, we construct a suitable decomposition of the Duhamel term introduced by I. Bejenaru, A. D. Ionescu, C. E. Kenig, and D. Tataru (2011). Moreover we discuss scattering of global solutions and the optimality for the regularity of our well-posedness results, namely we prove that the flow map is not smooth in several cases.

Our predictions of the muon fluence induced by electrons are in good agreement with the experimental data. To understand the known differences between the calculations of the muon fluence, which have been determined using other Monte-Carlo codes, we quantitatively evaluate the fluctuations in the Monte-Carlo results due to systematic errors in multiple Coulomb scattering, differences in the approximation methods and energy loss models, and whether incoherent production is considered.

The purposes of this collaboration are (1) acquisition of shielding data in a proton beam energy domain above 100 GeV; (2) further evaluation of predictive accuracy of the PHITS and MARS codes; (3) modification of physics models and data in these codes if needed; (4) establishment of irradiation field for radiation effect tests; and (5) development of a code module for improved description of radiation effects. A series of experiments has been performed at the Pbar target station and NuMI facility, using irradiation of targets with 120 GeV protons for antiproton and neutrino production, as well as the M-test beam line (M-test) for measuring nuclear data and detector responses. Various nuclear and shielding data have been measured by activation methods with chemical separation techniques as well as by other detectors such as a Bonner ball counter. Analyses with the experimental data are in progress for benchmarking the PHITS and MARS15 codes. In this presentation recent activities and results are reviewed.

As simulation system, the variety of physics processes implemented is one of the most important functionalities. In that sense, Geant4 is one of the most powerful simulation toolkits. Its flexibility and expansibility brought by object-oriented approach make it possible for us to easily assimilate external simulation packages into the Geant4 system as modules of physics processes. We developed an interface for using EGS4, which is another of the most well-known simulation package for electromagnetic physics, in Geant4. By means of this interface, EGS4 users can share Geant4 powerful resources, such as geometry, tracking, etc. It is also important that it can provide a common environment for comparison tests between EGS4 and Geant4. In this paper, we describe our design and implementation of the interface.

The Si(111)7x7 surface was observed by reflection electron microscopy (REM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) simultaneously in an ultra-high vacuum electron microscope. The distance between the STM tip and the Si surface was detected from the REM image, which showed the real and the mirror image of the tip. We approached the tip to the surface or retracted from the surface by a piezo drive to observe the strain induced on the Si(111)7x7 surface as a function of the tip-surface distance. This investigation was done with and without the bias voltage between the tip and the substrate. With bias voltage of 1.0 V on the sample, the tip was approached to 1.6 nm above the sample surface for the tunneling current of 0.8 nA, no detectable order of strain (10^{-4}) was induced on the sample surface. When the bias decreased within the range of -0.3 - +0.5 V, the surface was compressed over the Si surface area of 100 nm. Without the bias voltage, tensile and compressive strain was detected as the tip-surface distance changed from attractive to the repulsive interaction regime. The strain field extended over 50 - 140 nm, and the force became neutral at the tip-substrate distance of 0.45 nm.

An O(N) algorithm is proposed for calculating linear response functions of non-interacting electrons in arbitray potential. This algorithm is based on numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation discretized in space, and suitable to parallel- and vector- computation. Since it avoids O(N^3) computational effort of matrix diagonalization, it requires only O(N) computational effort where N is the dimension of the statevector.
This O(N) algorithm is very effective for systems consisting of thousands of atoms, since otherwise we have to calculate large number of eigenstates, i.e., the occupied one-electron states up to the Fermi energy and the unoccupied states with higher energy.
The advantage of this method compared to the Chebyshev polynomial method recently developed by Wang (L.W. Wang, Phys. Rev. B49, 10154 (1994);L.W. Wang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1039 (1994)) is that our method can calculate linear response functions without any storage of huge statevectors on external storage. Therefore it can treat much larger systems.
