We develop a general theory for the existence, uniqueness, and higher regularity of solutions to wave-type equations on Lorentzian manifolds with timelike curves of cone-type singularities. These singularities may be of geometric type (cone points with time-dependent cross sectional metric), of analytic type (such as asymptotically inverse square singularities or first order asymptotically scaling-critical singular terms), or any combination thereof. We can treat tensorial equations without any symmetry assumptions; we only require a condition of mode stability type for the stationary model operators defined at each point along the curve of cone points. In symmetric ultrastatic settings, we recover the solvability theory given by the functional calculus for the Friedrichs extension.

In spacetime dimensions $n+1\geq 4$, we show the existence of solutions of the Einstein vacuum equations which describe asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes with prescribed smooth data at the conformal boundary. Given a smooth globally hyperbolic $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime satisfying the Einstein vacuum equations (possibly with cosmological constant) and an inextendible timelike geodesic, we construct a family of metrics depending on a small parameter $ε>0$ with the following properties. (1) They solve the Einstein vacuum equations modulo $\mathcal{O}(ε^\infty)$. (2) Away from the geodesic they tend to the original metric as $ε\to 0$. (3) Their $ε^{-1}$-rescalings near every point of the geodesic tend to a fixed subextremal Kerr metric (assuming a condition on the mode stability at zero frequency which we verify in the very slowly rotating case). Our results apply on spacetimes which do not admit nontrivial Killing vector fields in a neighborhood of a point on the geodesic. They also apply in a neighborhood of the domain of outer communications of subextremal Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, in which case our metrics model extreme mass ratio inspirals if we choose the timelike geodesic to cross the event horizon.
The metrics which we construct here depend on $ε$ and the (rescaled) coordinates on the original spacetime in a log-smooth fashion. This in particular justifies the formal perturbation theoretic setup in work of Gralla-Wald on gravitational self-force in the case of small black holes.

We introduce a novel framework for the analysis of linear wave equations on nonstationary asymptotically flat spacetimes, under the assumptions of mode stability and absence of zero energy resonances for a stationary model operator. Our methods apply in all spacetime dimensions and to tensorial equations, and they do not require any symmetry or almost-symmetry assumptions on the spacetime metrics or on the wave type operators. Moreover, we allow for the presence of terms which are asymptotically scaling critical at infinity, such as inverse square potentials. For simplicity of presentation, we do not allow for normally hyperbolic trap** or horizons.
In the first part of the paper, we study stationary wave type equations, i.e. equations with time-translation symmetry, and prove pointwise upper bounds for their solutions. We establish a relationship between pointwise decay rates and weights related to the map** properties of the zero energy operator. Under a nondegeneracy assumption, we prove that this relationship is sharp by extracting leading order asymptotic profiles at late times. The main tool is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies.
In the second part, we consider a class of wave operators without time-translation symmetry which settle down to stationary operators at a rate $t_*^{-δ}$ as an appropriate hyperboloidal time function $t_*$ tends to infinity. The main result is a sharp solvability theory for forward problems on a scale of polynomially weighted spacetime $L^2$-Sobolev spaces. The proof combines a regularity theory for the nonstationary operator with the invertibility of the stationary model established in the first part. The regularity theory is fully microlocal and utilizes edge-b-analysis near null infinity, as developed in joint work with Vasy, and 3b-analysis in the forward cone.

We present a novel approach to the analysis of regularity and decay for solutions of wave equations in a neighborhood of null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes of any dimension. The classes of metrics and wave type operators we consider near null infinity include those arising in nonlinear stability problems for Einstein's field equations in $1+3$ dimensions. In a neighborhood of null infinity, in an appropriate compactification of the spacetime to a manifold with corners, the wave operators are of edge type at null infinity and totally characteristic at spacelike and future timelike infinity. On a corresponding scale of Sobolev spaces, we demonstrate how microlocal regularity propagates across or into null infinity via a sequence of radial sets. As an application, inspired by work of the second author with Baskin and Wunsch, we prove regularity and decay estimates for forward solutions of wave type equations on asymptotically flat spacetimes which are asymptotically homogeneous with respect to scaling in the forward timelike cone and have an appropriate structure at null infinity. These estimates are new even for the wave operator on Minkowski space.
The results obtained here are also used as black boxes in a global theory of wave type equations on asymptotically flat and asymptotically stationary spacetimes developed by the first author.

On a suitable class of non-compact manifolds, we study (pseudo)differential operators which feature an asymptotic translation-invariance along one axis and an asymptotic dilation-invariance, or asymptotic homogeneity with respect to scaling, in all directions not parallel to that axis. Elliptic examples include generalized 3-body Hamiltonians at zero energy such as $Δ_x+V_0(x')+V(x)$ where $Δ_x$ is the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^n_x=\mathbb{R}^{n-1}_{x'}\times\mathbb{R}_{x''}$, and $V_0$ and $V$ are potentials with at least inverse quadratic decay: this operator is approximately translation-invariant in $x''$ when $|x'|\lesssim 1$, and approximately homogeneous of degree $-2$ with respect to scaling in $(x',x'')$ when $|x'|\gtrsim|x''|$. Hyperbolic examples include wave operators on nonstationary perturbations of asymptotically flat spacetimes.
We introduce a systematic framework for the (microlocal) analysis of such operators by working on a compactification $M$ of the underlying manifold. The analysis is based on a calculus of pseudodifferential operators which blends elements of Melrose's b-calculus and Vasy's 3-body scattering calculus. For fully elliptic operators in our 3b-calculus, we construct precise parametrices whose Schwartz kernels are polyhomogeneous conormal distributions on an appropriate resolution of $M\times M$. We prove the Fredholm property of such operators on a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces, and show that tempered elements of their kernels and cokernels have full asymptotic expansions on $M$.

We study underdetermined elliptic linear partial differential operators $P$ on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, such as the divergence operator on 1-forms or symmetric 2-tensors. Suitably interpreted, these are instances of (weighted) totally characteristic differential operators on a compact manifold with boundary whose principal symbols are surjective but not injective. We study the equation $P u=f$ when $f$ has a generalized Taylor expansion at $r=\infty$, that is, a full asymptotic expansion into terms with radial dependence $r^{-i z}(\log r)^k$ with $(z,k)\in\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{N}_0$ up to rapidly decaying remainders. We construct a solution $u$ whose asymptotic behavior at $r=\infty$ is optimal in that the index set of exponents $(z,k)$ arising in its asymptotic expansion is as small as possible. On the flipside, we show that there is an infinite-dimensional nullspace of $P$ consisting of smooth tensors whose expansions at $r=\infty$ contain nonzero terms $r^{-i z}(\log r)^k$ for any desired index set of $(z,k)\in\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{N}_0$.
Applications include sharp solvability results for the divergence equation on 1-forms or symmetric 2-tensors on asymptotically Euclidean spaces, as well as a regularity improvement in a gluing construction for the constraint equations in general relativity recently introduced by the author.

We prove a strong localized gluing result for the general relativistic constraint equations (with or without cosmological constant) in $n\geq 3$ spatial dimensions. We glue an $ε$-rescaling of an asymptotically flat data set $(\hatγ,\hat k)$ into the neighborhood of a point $\mathfrak{p}\in X$ inside of another initial data set $(X,γ,k)$, under a local genericity condition (non-existence of KIDs) near $\mathfrak{p}$. As the scaling parameter $ε$ tends to $0$, the rescalings $\frac{x}ε$ of normal coordinates $x$ on $X$ around $\mathfrak{p}$ become asymptotically flat coordinates on the asymptotically flat data set; outside of any neighborhood of $\mathfrak{p}$ on the other hand, the glued initial data converge back to $(γ,k)$. The initial data we construct enjoy polyhomogeneous regularity jointly in $ε$ and the (rescaled) spatial coordinates.
Applying our construction to unit mass black hole data sets $(X,γ,k)$ and appropriate boosted Kerr initial data sets $(\hatγ,\hat k)$ produces initial data which conjecturally evolve into the extreme mass ratio inspiral of a unit mass and a mass $ε$ black hole.
The proof combines a variant of the gluing method introduced by Corvino and Schoen with geometric singular analysis techniques originating in Melrose's work. On a technical level, we present a fully geometric microlocal treatment of the solvability theory for the linearized constraints map.

A Kerr-de Sitter black hole is a solution $(M,g_{Λ,\mathfrak{m},\mathfrak{a}})$ of the Einstein vacuum equations with cosmological constant $Λ>0$. It describes a black hole with mass $\mathfrak{m}>0$ and specific angular momentum $\mathfrak{a}\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that for any $ε>0$ there exists $δ>0$ so that mode stability holds for the linear scalar wave equation $\Box_{g_{Λ,\mathfrak{m},\mathfrak{a}}}φ=0$ when $|\mathfrak{a}/\mathfrak{m}|\in[0,1-ε]$ and $Λ\mathfrak{m}^2<δ$. In fact, we show that all quasinormal modes $σ$ in any fixed half space $\Imσ>-C\sqrtΛ$ are equal to $0$ or $-i\sqrt{Λ/3}(n+o(1))$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, as $Λ\mathfrak{m}^2\searrow 0$. We give an analogous description of quasinormal modes for the Klein-Gordon equation.
We regard a Kerr-de Sitter black hole with small $Λ\mathfrak{m}^2$ as a singular perturbation either of a Kerr black hole with the same angular momentum-to-mass ratio, or of de Sitter spacetime without any black hole present. We use the mode stability of subextremal Kerr black holes, proved by Whiting and Shlapentokh-Rothman, as a black box; the quasinormal modes described by our main result are perturbations of those of de Sitter space. Our proof is based on careful uniform a priori estimates, in a variety of asymptotic regimes, for the spectral family and its de Sitter and Kerr model problems in the singular limit $Λ\mathfrak{m}^2\searrow 0$.

We definitively prove the existence of quasinormal modes for massless and massive scalar fields in all dimensions and for all scalar field masses, and present a simple method for the explicit calculation of QNMs and the corresponding mode solutions. By passing to coordinates which are regular at the cosmological horizon, we demonstrate that certain QNMs only appear in the QNM expansion of the field when the initial data do not vanish near the cosmological horizon. The key objects in the argument are dual resonant states. We introduce a general framework for the study of the diffraction of waves by cone points at high frequencies. We prove that semiclassical regularity propagates through cone points with an almost sharp loss even when the underlying operator has leading order terms at the conic singularity which fail to be symmetric. We moreover show improved regularity along strictly diffractive geodesics. Applications include high energy resolvent estimates for complex- or matrix-valued inverse square potentials and for the Dirac-Coulomb equation. We also prove a sharp propagation estimate for the semiclassical conic Laplacian.
The proofs use the semiclassical cone calculus, introduced recently by the author, and combine radial point estimates with estimates for a scattering problem on an exact cone. A second microlocal refinement of the calculus captures semiclassical conormal regularity at the cone point and thus facilitates a unified treatment of semiclassical cone and b-regularity.

An example of such an operator is the shifted semiclassical Laplacian $h^2Δ_g+1$ on a manifold $(X, g)$ of dimension $n\geq 3$ with conic singularities. Our approach is constructive and based on techniques from geometric microlocal analysis: we construct the Schwartz kernels of resolvents and complex powers as conormal distributions on a suitable resolution of the space $[0,1)_h\times X\times X$ of $h$-dependent integral kernels; the construction of complex powers relies on a calculus with a second semiclassical parameter. As an application, we characterize the domains of $(h^2Δ_g+1)^{w/2}$ for $\mathrm{Re}\,w\in(-\frac{n}{2},\frac{n}{2})$ and use this to prove the propagation of semiclassical regularity through a cone point on a range of weighted semiclassical function spaces.

We prove Price's law with an explicit leading order term for solutions $φ(t,x)$ of the scalar wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes including subextremal Kerr black holes. Our precise asymptotics in the full forward causal cone imply in particular that $φ(t,x)=c t^{-3}+\mathcal O(t^{-4+})$ for bounded $|x|$, where $c\in\mathbb C$ is an explicit constant. This decay also holds along the event horizon on Kerr spacetimes and thus renders a result by Luk-Sbierski on the linear scalar instability of the Cauchy horizon unconditional. We moreover prove inverse quadratic decay of the radiation field, with explicit leading order term. We establish analogous results for scattering by stationary potentials with inverse cubic spatial decay. On the Schwarzschild spacetime, we prove pointwise $t^{-2 l-3}$ decay for waves with angular frequency at least $l$, and $t^{-2 l-4}$ decay for waves which are in addition initially static. This definitively settles Price's law for linear scalar waves in full generality.
The heart of the proof is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies. Rather than constructing its Schwartz kernel explicitly, we proceed more directly using the geometric microlocal approach to the limiting absorption principle pioneered by Melrose and recently extended to the zero energy limit by Vasy.

We prove the linear stability of slowly rotating Kerr black holes as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equation: linearized perturbations of a Kerr metric decay at an inverse polynomial rate to a linearized Kerr metric plus a pure gauge term. We work in a natural wave map/DeTurck gauge and show that the pure gauge term can be taken to lie in a fixed 7-dimensional space with a simple geometric interpretation. Our proof rests on a robust general framework, based on recent advances in microlocal analysis and non-elliptic Fredholm theory, for the analysis of resolvents of operators on asymptotically flat spaces. With the mode stability of the Schwarzschild metric as well as of certain scalar and 1-form wave operators on the Schwarzschild spacetime as an input, we establish the linear stability of slowly rotating Kerr black holes using perturbative arguments; in particular, our proof does not make any use of special algebraic properties of the Kerr metric. The heart of the paper is a detailed description of the resolvent of the linearization of a suitable hyperbolic gauge-fixed Einstein operator at low energies. As in previous work by the second and third authors on the nonlinear stability of cosmological black holes, constraint dam** plays an important role. Here, it eliminates certain pathological generalized zero energy states; it also ensures that solutions of our hyperbolic formulation of the linearized Einstein equation have the stated asymptotics and decay for general initial data and forcing terms, which is a useful feature in nonlinear and numerical applications.

We prove microlocal estimates at the trapped set of asymptotically Kerr spacetimes: these are spacetimes whose metrics decay inverse polynomially in time to a stationary subextremal Kerr metric. This combines two independent results. The first one is purely dynamical: we show that the stable and unstable manifolds of a decaying perturbation of a time-translation-invariant dynamical system with normally hyperbolic trap** are smooth and decay to their stationary counterparts. The second, independent, result provides microlocal estimates for operators whose null-bicharacteristic flow has a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, under suitable non-degeneracy conditions on the stable and unstable manifolds; this includes operators on closed manifolds, as well as operators on spacetimes for which the invariant manifold lies at future infinity.

Several follow-up works have since suggested that such result, while conceptually interesting, cannot be upheld in practice. We focus here on the claim that the presence of charged massive scalars suffices to save Strong Cosmic Censorship. To the contrary, we show that there still exists a finite region in parameter space where Strong Cosmic Censorship is expected to be violated.

The fate of Cauchy horizons, such as those found inside charged black holes, is intrinsically connected to the decay of small perturbations exterior to the event horizon. As such, the validity of the strong cosmic censorship (SCC) conjecture is tied to how effectively the exterior damps fluctuations. Here, we study massless scalar fields in the exterior of Reissner--Nordstrom--de Sitter black holes. Their decay rates are governed by quasinormal modes of the black hole. We identify three families of modes in these spacetimes: one directly linked to the photon sphere, well described by standard WKB-type tools; another family whose existence and timescale is closely related to the de Sitter horizon. Finally, a third family which dominates for near-extremally-charged black holes and which is also present in asymptotically flat spacetimes. The last two families of modes seem to have gone unnoticed in the literature. We give a detailed description of linear scalar perturbations of such black holes, and conjecture that SCC is violated in the near extremal regime.

We study the nonlinear stability of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime as a solution of the Einstein vacuum equation. Similarly to our previous work on the stability of cosmological black holes, we construct the solution of the nonlinear initial value problem using an iteration scheme in which we solve a linearized equation globally at each step; we use a generalized harmonic gauge and implement constraint dam** to fix the geometry of null infinity. The linear analysis is largely based on energy and vector field methods originating in work by Klainerman. The weak null condition of Lindblad and Rodnianski arises naturally as a nilpotent coupling of certain metric components in a linear model operator at null infinity. Upon compactifying $\mathbb{R}^4$ to a manifold with corners, with boundary hypersurfaces corresponding to spacelike, null, and timelike infinity, we show, using the framework of Melrose's b-analysis, that polyhomogeneous initial data produce a polyhomogeneous spacetime metric. Finally, we relate the Bondi mass to a logarithmic term in the expansion of the metric at null infinity and prove the Bondi mass loss formula.

In dimensions $3$ and higher the proofs follow the classical vector field approach of Morawetz, while in dimension $2$ we obtain our bound by working with spaces coming from general relativity. We also show that in odd dimensions resonances of small obstacles are close, in a suitable sense, to Euclidean resonances.

Our black hole uniqueness result only requires the solution to have high but finite regularity; in particular, we do not make any analyticity assumptions.

We prove the global non-linear stability, without symmetry assumptions, of slowly rotating charged black holes in de Sitter spacetimes in the context of the initial value problem for the Einstein-Maxwell equations: If one perturbs the initial data of a slowly rotating Kerr-Newman-de Sitter (KNdS) black hole, then in a neighborhood of the exterior region of the black hole, the metric and the electromagnetic field decay exponentially fast to their values for a possibly different member of the KNdS family. This is a continuation of recent work of the author with Vasy on the stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family for the Einstein vacuum equations. Our non-linear iteration scheme automatically finds the final black hole parameters as well as the gauge in which the global solution exists; we work in a generalized wave coordinate/Lorenz gauge, with gauge source functions lying in a suitable finite-dimensional space.
We include a self-contained proof of the linear mode stability of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, building on work by Kodama-Ishibashi. In the course of our non-linear stability argument, we also obtain the first proof of the linear (mode) stability of slowly rotating KNdS black holes using robust perturbative techniques.

We establish the full global non-linear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes, as solutions of the initial value problem for the Einstein vacuum equations with positive cosmological constant, for small angular momenta, and without any symmetry assumptions on the initial data. We achieve this by extending the linear and non-linear analysis on black hole spacetimes described in a sequence of earlier papers by the authors: We develop a general framework which enables us to deal systematically with the diffeomorphism invariance of Einstein's equations. In particular, the iteration scheme used to solve Einstein's equations automatically finds the parameters of the Kerr-de Sitter black hole that the solution is asymptotic to, the exponentially decaying tail of the solution, and the gauge in which we are able to find the solution; the gauge here is a wave map/DeTurck type gauge, modified by source terms which are treated as unknowns, lying in a suitable finite-dimensional space.

We obtain our results by modifying the spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon in a suitable manner, which puts the wave equation into a framework in which a number of standard as well as more recent microlocal regularity and scattering theory results apply. In particular, the conormal regularity of waves at the Cauchy horizon - which yields the boundedness statement - is a consequence of radial point estimates, which are microlocal manifestations of the blue-shift and red-shift effects.

In order to deduce asymptotics and decay from this, one in addition needs high energy estimates for the wave operator acting on sections of the form bundle. The present paper provides these on perturbations of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spaces in all spacetime dimensions $n\geq 4$. In fact, we prove exponential decay, up to a finite-dimensional space of resonances, of waves valued in any finite rank subbundle of the tensor bundle, which in particular includes differential forms and symmetric tensors. As the main technical tool for working on vector bundles that do not have a natural positive definite inner product, we introduce pseudodifferential inner products, which are inner products depending on the position in phase space.

We obtain our results by proving the global invertibility of linear operators with coefficients in high regularity $L^2$-based function spaces and using iterative arguments for the non-linear problems. The linear analysis is accomplished in two parts: Firstly, a regularity theory is developed by means of a calculus for pseudodifferential operators with non-smooth coefficients, similar to the one developed by Beals and Reed, on manifolds with boundary. Secondly, the asymptotic behavior of solutions to linear equations is studied using standard b-analysis, introduced in this context by Vasy; in particular, resonances play an important role.

In this paper we show the small data solvability of suitable semilinear wave and Klein-Gordon equations on geometric classes of spaces, which include so-called asymptotically de Sitter and Kerr-de Sitter spaces, as well as asymptotically Minkowski spaces. These spaces allow general infinities, called conformal infinity in the asymptotically de Sitter setting; the Minkowski type setting is that of non-trap** Lorentzian scattering metrics introduced by Baskin, Vasy and Wunsch. Our results are obtained by showing the global Fredholm property, and indeed invertibility, of the underlying linear operator on suitable L^2-based function spaces, which also possess appropriate algebra or more complicated multiplicative properties. The linear framework is based on the b-analysis, in the sense of Melrose, introduced in this context by Vasy to describe the asymptotic behavior of solutions of linear equations. An interesting feature of the analysis is that resonances, namely poles of the inverse of the Mellin transformed b-normal operator, which are `quantum' (not purely symbolic) objects, play an important role.
