To solve the ``neutron lifetime puzzle,'' where measured neutron lifetimes differ depending on the measurement methods, an experiment with pulsed neutron beam at J-PARC is in progress. In this experiment, neutrons are bunched into 40-cm lengths using a spin flip chopper (SFC), where the statistical sensitivity was limited by the aperture size of the SFC. The SFC comprises three sets of magnetic supermirrors and two resonant spin flippers. In this paper, we discuss an upgrade to enlarge the apertures of the SFC. The improved SFC achieved a signal-to-noise ratio of 250--400, which is comparable to the previous one. The statistics per unit time of the neutron lifetime experiment increased 2.8 times with the upgrade. Consequently, the time required to reach an accuracy of 1~s in the neutron lifetime experiment was reduced from 590 to 170~days, which is a significant reduction in time. This improvement in statistical accuracy will also contribute to the reduction of systematic uncertainties, such as background evaluation, fostering further advancements in the neutron lifetime experiments at J-PARC.

This study entailed the successful deployment of a novel neutron interferometer that utilizes multilayer mirrors. The apparatus facilitates a precise evaluation of the wavelength dependence of interference fringes utilizing a pulsed neutron source. Our interferometer achieved an impressive precision of 0.02 rad within a 20-min of recording time. Compared to systems using silicon crystals, the measurement sensitivity was maintained even when using a simplified disturbance suppressor. By segregating beam paths entirely, we achieved successful measurements of neutron-nuclear scattering lengths across various samples. The values measured for Si, Al, and Ti were in agreement with those found in the literature, while V showed a disparity of 45%. This discrepancy may be attributable to impurities encountered in previous investigations. The accuracy of measurements can be enhanced further by mitigating systematic uncertainties that are associated with neutron wavelength, sample impurity, and thickness. This novel neutron interferometer enables us to measure fundamental parameters, such as the neutron-nuclear scattering length of materials, with a precision that surpasses that of conventional interferometers.

Here, we have investigated the spin fluctuations in the MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ polycrystalline samples with $x=0.6$ and $0.8$ by using the time-of-flight (TOF) neutron inelastic scattering and MIEZE-type neutron spin echo techniques to elucidate the microscopic origin of the unconventional Hall effect in the SHAH lattice states. This research is motivated by the observation of a sign change in the unconventional Hall resistivity as a function of temperature [Y. Fujishiro et al., Nat. Comm. $\textbf{10}$, 1059 (2019)]. The present results reveal the correspondences between the temperature ranges where the positive Hall resistivity and spin fluctuations are observed. These results agree well with the theoretical model of the conduction electrons scattered by the fluctuating spin clusters with a non-zero average of sign-biased scalar spin chirality as a mechanism of the positive Hall resistivity [H. Ishizuka and N. Nagaosa, Sci. Adv. $\textbf{4}$, eaap9962 (2018)].

These detectors can be utilised for imaging applications where a reasonably high track density, approximately of the order of 1 $\times$ $10^4$ tracks in an area of 100 $\times$ 100 $μ$m$^2$, is required. To investigate the reusability of FNTDs for imaging applications, we present an approach to perform optical bleaching under the required track density conditions. The reusability was assessed through seven irradiation-bleaching cycles. For the irradiation, the studied FNTD was exposed to alpha-particles from an $^{241}$Am radioactive source. The optical bleaching was performed by means of ultraviolet laser light with a wavelength of 355 nm. Three dedicated regions on a single FNTD with different accumulated track densities and bleaching conditions were investigated. After every irradiation-bleaching cycle, signal-to-noise ratio was calculated to evaluate FNTD performance. It is concluded that FNTDs can be reused at least seven times for applications where accumulation of a high track density is required.

Neutron imaging is a non-destructive inspection technique with a wide range of applications. One of the important aspects concerning neutron imaging is achieving micrometer-scale spatial resolution. Develo** a neutron detector with a high resolution is a challenging task. Neutron detectors, based on fine-grained nuclear emulsion, may be suitable for high resolution neutron imaging applications. High track density is a necessary requirement to improve the quality of neutron imaging. However, the available track analysis methods are difficult to apply under high track density conditions. Simulated images were used to determine the required track density for neutron imaging. It was concluded that a track density of the order of $10^4$ tracks per 100 $\times$ 100 $μ$m$^2$ is sufficient to utilize neutron detectors for imaging applications. The contrast resolution was also investigated for the image data sets with various track densities and neutron transmission rates. Moreover, experiments were performed for neutron imaging of the gadolinium-based gratings with known geometries. The structure of gratings was successfully resolved. The calculated 1$σ$ 10-90 \% edge response, using the gray scale optical images of the grating slit with a periodic structure of 9 $μ$m, was 0.945 $\pm$ 0.004 $μ$m.

The TUCAN (TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron) collaboration aims to search for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) with unprecedented precision. One of the essential elements for the nEDM measurement is a polarization analyzer of ultracold neutrons (UCNs), whose main component is a magnetized thin iron film. Several thin iron films were deposited on aluminum and silicon ubstrates and were characterized by vibrating sample magnetometry and cold-neutron reflectometry. A magnetic field required to saturate the iron film is $\sim$12 kA/m for those on the aluminum substrates and 6.4 kA/m for the silicon substrates. The magnetic potential of the iron films on the Si substrate was estimated to be 2 T by the neutron reflectometry, which is sufficient performance for an UCN polarization analyzer of the nEDM measurement.

Hypothetical short-range interactions could be detected by measuring the wavefunctions of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) on a mirror bounded by the Earth's gravitational field. The Searches require detectors with higher spatial resolution. We are develo** a UCN detector for the with a high spatial resolution, which consists of a Si substrate, a thin converter layer including $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, and a layer of fine-grained nuclear emulsion. Its resolution was estimated to be less than 100 nm by fitting tracks of either $^{7}$Li nuclei or $α$-particles, which were created when neutrons interacted with the $^{10}$B$_{4}$C layer. For actual measurements of the spatial distributions, the following two improvements were made: The first was to establish a method to align microscopic images with high accuracy within a wide region of 65 mm $\times$ 0.2 mm. We created reference marks of 1 $μ$m and 5 $μ$m diameter with an interval of 50 $μ$m and 500 $μ$m, respectively, on the Si substrate by electron beam lithography and realized a position accuracy of less than 30 nm. The second was to build a holder that could maintain the atmospheric pressure around the nuclear emulsion to utilize it under vacuum during exposure to UCNs. The intrinsic resolution of the improved detector was estimated by evaluating the blur of a transmission image of a gadolinium grating taken by cold neutrons as better than 0.56 $\pm$ 0.08 $μ$m, which included the grating accuracy. A test exposure to UCNs was conducted to obtain the spatial distribution of UCNs in the Earth's gravitational field. Although the test was successful, a blurring of 6.9 $μ$m was found in the measurements, compared with a theoretical curve. We identified the blurring caused by the refraction of UCNs due to the roughness of the upstream surface of the substrate. Polishing of the surface makes the resolution less than 100 nm.

Detection efficiencies were measured as (0.16$\pm$0.02)% and (12$\pm$2)% for cold and ultracold neutrons consistently with the $^{10}$B content in the converter. Positions of individual neutrons can be determined by observing secondary particle tracks recorded in the nuclear emulsion. The spatial resolution of incident neutrons were found to be in the range of 11-99 nm in the angle region of tan$θ\leq 1.9$, where $θ$ is the angle between a recorded track and the normal direction of the converter layer. The achieved spatial resolution corresponds to the improvement of one or two orders of magnitude compared with conventional techniques and it is comparable with the wavelength of UCNs.

In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for a class of increasing random simplicial complexes; this result is a higher-dimensional counterpart of Frieze's $ζ(3)$-limit theorem for the Erdős-Rényi graph process. The main results include solutions to questions posed in an earlier study by Hiraoka and Shirai about the Linial-Meshulam complex process and the random clique complex process. One of the key elements of the arguments is a new upper bound on the Betti numbers of general simplicial complexes in terms of the number of small eigenvalues of Laplacians on links. This bound can be regarded as a quantitative version of the cohomology vanishing theorem.

"Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP/ BL05)" at MLF in J-PARC is a beamline for studies of fundamental physics. The beamline is divided into three branches so that different experiments can be performed in parallel. These beam branches are being used to develop a variety of new projects. We are develo** an experimental project to measure the neutron lifetime with total uncertainty of 1 s (0.1%). The neutron lifetime is an important parameter in elementary particle and astrophysics. Thus far, the neutron lifetime has been measured by several groups; however, different values are obtained from different measurement methods. This experiment is using a method with different sources of systematic uncertainty than measurements conducted to date. We are also develo** a source of pulsed ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) produced from a Doppler shifter are available at the unpolarized beam branch. We are develo** a time focusing device for UCNs, a so called "rebuncher", which can increase UCN density from a pulsed UCN source. At the low divergence beam branch, an experiment to search an unknown intermediate force with nanometer range is performed by measuring the angular dependence of neutron scattering by noble gases. Finally the beamline is also used for the research and development of optical elements and detectors. For example, a position sensitive neutron detector that uses emulsion to achieve sub-micrometer resolution is currently under development. We have succeeded in detecting cold and ultra-cold neutrons using the emulsion detector.

In this paper, we consider non-symmetric bilinear forms that are the sum of strong local symmetric Dirichlet forms and lower-order perturbed terms. We give sufficient conditions for the associated semigroups to have asymptotics of the same type.

Abstract:
We propose a method of detecting a phase transition in a generalized Pólya urn in an information cascade experiment. The method is based on the asymptotic behavior of the correlation $C(t)$ between the first subject's choice and the $t+1$-th subject's choice, the limit value of which, $c\equiv \lim_{t\to \infty}C(t)$, is the order parameter of the phase transition. To verify the method, we perform a voting experiment using two-choice questions. An urn X is chosen at random from two urns A and B, which contain red and blue balls in different configurations. Subjects sequentially guess whether X is A or B using information about the prior subjects' choices and the color of a ball randomly drawn from X. The color tells the subject which is X with probability $q$. We set $q\in \{5/9,6/9,7/9,8/9\}$ by controlling the configurations of red and blue balls in A and B. The (average) lengths of the sequence of the subjects are 63, 63, 54.0, and 60.5 for $q\in \{5/9,6/9,7/9,8/9\}$, respectively. We describe the sequential voting process by a nonlinear Pólya urn model. The model suggests the possibility of a phase transition when $q$ changes. We show that $c>0\,\,\,(=0)$ for $q=5/9,6/9\,\,\,(7/9,8/9 )$ and detect the phase transition using the proposed method.

We propose a method of detecting non-self-correcting information cascades in experiments in which subjects choose an option sequentially by observing the choices of previous subjects. The method uses the correlation function $C(t)$ between the first and the $t+1$-th subject's choices. $C(t)$ measures the strength of the domino effect, and the limit value $c\equiv \lim_{t\to \infty}C(t)$ determines whether the domino effect lasts forever $(c>0)$ or not $(c=0)$. The condition $c>0$ is an adequate condition for a non-self-correcting system, and the probability that the majority's choice remains wrong in the limit $t\to \infty$ is positive. We apply the method to data from two experiments in which $T$ subjects answered two-choice questions: (i) general knowledge questions ($T_{avg}=60$) and (ii) urn-choice questions ($T=63$). We find $c>0$ for difficult questions in (i) and all cases in (ii), and the systems are not self-correcting.

We have constructed a Doppler-shifter-type pulsed ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source at the Materials and Life Science Experiment Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Very-cold neutrons (VCNs) with 136-$\mathrm{m/s}$ velocity in a neutron beam supplied by a pulsed neutron source are decelerated by reflection on a m=10 wide-band multilayer mirror, yielding pulsed UCN. The mirror is fixed to the tip of a 2,000-rpm rotating arm moving with 68-$\mathrm{m/s}$ velocity in the same direction as the VCN. The repetition frequency of the pulsed UCN is $8.33~\mathrm{Hz}$ and the time width of the pulse at production is $4.4~\mathrm{ms}$. In order to increase the UCN flux, a supermirror guide, wide-band monochromatic mirrors, focus guides, and a UCN extraction guide have been newly installed or improved. The $1~\mathrm{MW}$-equivalent count rate of the output neutrons with longitudinal wavelengths longer than $58~\mathrm{nm}$ is $1.6 \times 10^{2}~\mathrm{cps}$, while that of the true UCNs is $80~\mathrm{cps}$. The spatial density at production is $1.4~\mathrm{UCN/cm^{3}}$. This new UCN source enables us to research and develop apparatuses necessary for the investigation of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM).

Abstract:
We introduce Riemannian-like structures associated with strong local Dirichlet forms on general state spaces. Such structures justify the principle that the pointwise index of the Dirichlet form represents the effective dimension of the virtual tangent space at each point. The concept of differentiations of functions is studied, and an application to stochastic analysis is presented.

We consider the $(1,2)$-Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(U)$ on subsets $U$ in an abstract Wiener space, which is regarded as a canonical Dirichlet space on $U$. We prove that $W^{1,2}(U)$ has smooth cylindrical functions as a dense subset if $U$ is $H$-convex and $H$-open. For the proof, the relations between $H$-notions and quasi-notions are also studied.

Abstract:
We prove the neo-classical inequality with the optimal constant, which was conjectured by T. J. Lyons [Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 14 (1998) 215-310]. For the proof, we introduce the fractional order Taylor's series with residual terms. Their application to a particular function provides an identity that deduces the optimal neo-classical inequality.

According to geometric measure theory, this surface measure is realized by the one-codimensional Hausdorff measure restricted on the reduced boundary and/or the measure-theoretic boundary, which may be strictly smaller than the topological boundary. In this paper, we discuss the counterpart of this measure in the abstract Wiener space, which is a typical infinite-dimensional space. We introduce the concept of the measure-theoretic boundary in the Wiener space and provide the integration by parts formula for sets of finite perimeter. The formula is presented in terms of the integration with respect to the one-codimensional Hausdorff-Gauss measure restricted on the measure-theoretic boundary.

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN), neutrons with energies low enough to be confined by the Fermi potential in material bottles, are playing an increasing role in measurements of fundamental properties of the neutron. The ability to manipulate UCN with material guides and bottles, magnetic fields, and gravity can lead to experiments with lower systematic errors than have been obtained in experiments with cold neutron beams. The UCN densities provided by existing reactor sources limit these experiments. The promise of much higher densities from solid deuterium sources has led to proposed facilities coupled to both reactor and spallation neutron sources. In this paper we report on the performance of a prototype spallation neutron-driven solid deuterium source. This source produced bottled UCN densities of 145 +/-7 UCN/cm3, about three times greater than the largest bottled UCN densities previously reported. These results indicate that a production UCN source with substantially higher densities should be possible.

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium SD2. This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. Superthermal UCN sources offer orders of magnitude improvement in the available densities of UCNs, and are of great importance to fundamental particle-physics experiments such as searches for a static electric dipole moment and lifetime measurements of the free neutron. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time.
