Stochastic matching is the stochastic version of the well-known matching problem, which consists in maximizing the rewards of a matching under a set of probability distributions associated with the nodes and edges. In most stochastic matching problems, the probability distributions inherent in the nodes and edges are set a priori and are not controllable. However, many resource allocation platforms can control the probability distributions by changing prices. For example, a rideshare platform can control the distribution of the number of requesters by setting the fare to maximize the reward of a taxi-requester matching. Although several methods for optimizing price have been developed, optimizations in consideration of the matching problem are still in its infancy. In this paper, we tackle the problem of optimizing price in the consideration of the resulting bipartite graph matching, given the effect of the price on the probabilistic uncertainty in the graph. Even though our problem involves hard to evaluate objective values and is non-convex, we construct a (1-1/e)-approximation algorithm under the assumption that a convex min-cost flow problem can be solved exactly.

This paper studies bandit convex optimization with constraints, where the learner aims to generate a sequence of decisions under partial information of loss functions such that the cumulative loss is reduced as well as the cumulative constraint violation is simultaneously reduced. We adopt the cumulative \textit{hard} constraint violation as the metric of constraint violation, which is defined by $\sum_{t=1}^{T} \max\{g_t(\boldsymbol{x}_t), 0\}$. Owing to the maximum operator, a strictly feasible solution cannot cancel out the effects of violated constraints compared to the conventional metric known as \textit{long-term} constraints violation. We present a penalty-based proximal gradient descent method that attains a sub-linear growth of both regret and cumulative hard constraint violation, in which the gradient is estimated with a two-point function evaluation. Precisely, our algorithm attains $O(d^2T^{\max\{c,1-c\}})$ regret bounds and $O(d^2T^{1-\frac{c}{2}})$ cumulative hard constraint violation bounds for convex loss functions and time-varying constraints, where $d$ is the dimensionality of the feasible region and $c\in[\frac{1}{2}, 1)$ is a user-determined parameter. We also extend the result for the case where the loss functions are strongly convex and show that both regret and constraint violation bounds can be further reduced.

Price determination is a central research topic of revenue management in marketing. The important aspect in pricing is controlling the stochastic behavior of demand, and the previous studies have tackled price optimization problems with uncertainties. However, many of those studies assumed that uncertainties are independent of decision variables (i.e., prices) and did not consider situations where demand uncertainty depends on price. Although some price optimization studies have dealt with decision-dependent uncertainty, they make application-specific assumptions in order to obtain an optimal solution or an approximation solution. To handle a wider range of applications with decision-dependent uncertainty, we propose a general non-convex stochastic optimization formulation. This approach aims to maximize the expectation of a revenue function with respect to a random variable representing demand under a decision-dependent distribution. We derived an unbiased stochastic gradient estimator by using a well-tuned variance reduction parameter and used it for a projected stochastic gradient descent method to find a stationary point of our problem. We conducted synthetic experiments and simulation experiments with real data on a retail service application. The results show that the proposed method outputs solutions with higher total revenues than baselines.

In this paper, we propose a strategy to construct a multi-objective optimization algorithm from a single-objective optimization algorithm by using the Bézier simplex model. Also, we extend the stability of optimization algorithms in the sense of Probability Approximately Correct (PAC) learning and define the PAC stability. We prove that it leads to an upper bound on the generalization with high probability. Furthermore, we show that multi-objective optimization algorithms derived from a gradient descent-based single-objective optimization algorithm are PAC stable. We conducted numerical experiments and demonstrated that our method achieved lower generalization errors than the existing multi-objective optimization algorithm.

Abstract:
Maurer's universal statistical test can widely detect non-randomness of given sequences. Coron proposed an improved test, and further Yamamoto and Liu proposed a new test based on Coron's test. These tests use normal distributions as their reference distributions, but the soundness has not been theoretically discussed so far. Additionally, Yamamoto and Liu's test uses an experimental value as the variance of its reference distribution. In this paper, we theoretically derive the variance of the reference distribution of Yamamoto and Liu's test and prove that the true reference distribution of Coron's test converges to a normal distribution in some sense. We can apply the proof to the other tests with small changes.

Molecular alignment underpins optical, mechanical, and thermal properties of materials, however, its direct measurement from volumes with micrometer dimensions is not accessible, especially, for structurally complex bio-materials. How the molecular alignment is linked to extraordinary properties of silk and its amorphous-crystalline composition has to be accessed by a direct measurement from a single silk fiber. Here, we show orientation map** of the internal silk fiber structure via polarisation-dependent IR absorbance at high spatial resolution of 4.2 micrometers and 1.9 micrometers in a hyper-spectral IR imaging by attenuated total reflection using synchrotron radiation in the spectral fingerprint region around 6 micrometers wavelength. Free-standing longitudinal micro-slices of silk fibers, thinner than the fiber cross section, were prepared by microtome for the four polarisation method to directly measure the orientational sensitivity of absorbance in the molecular fingerprint spectral window of the amide bands of b-sheets and amorphous polypeptides of silk. Flat lateral micro-slices of silk eliminates shape related artefact in determination of absorbance anisotropy and order parameters of the amide bands.
