The two-dimensional electron liquid which forms between the band insulators LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO) is a promising component for oxide electronics, but the requirement of using single crystal SrTiO3 substrates for the growth limits its applications in terms of device fabrication. It is therefore important to find ways to deposit these materials on other substrates, preferably Si, or Si-based, in order to facilitate integration with existing technology. Interesting candidates are micron-sized nanosheets of Ca2Nb3O10 which can be used as seed layers for perovskite materials on any substrate. We have used low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) with in-situ pulsed laser deposition to study the subsequent growth of STO and LAO on such flakes which were deposited on Si. We can follow the morphology and crystallinity of the layers during growth, as well as fingerprint their electronic properties with angle resolved reflected electron spectroscopy. We find that STO layers, deposited on the nanosheets, can be made crystalline and flat; that LAO can be grown in a layer-by-layer fashion; and that the full heterostructure shows the signature of the formation of a conducting interface.

We have investigated the properties of interfaces between LaAlO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates singly terminated by TiO2. We used RF sputtering in a high-pressure oxygen atmosphere. The films are smooth, with flat surfaces. Transmission Electron Microscopy shows atomically sharp and continuous interfaces while EELS measurements show some slight intermixing. The elemental ratio of La to Al measured by EDX is found to be 1.07. Importantly, we find these interfaces to be non-conducting, indicating that the sputtered interface is not electronically reconstructed in the way reported for films grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition because of the different interplay between stoichiometry, mixing and oxygen vacancies.

The critical current $I_c$ increases as function of decreasing temperature. Upon applying an in-plane magnetic field, $I_c$ goes through a maximum at the rather high field of 80 mT. We believe this to be a long range proximity effect in the ferromagnet, carried by odd-frequency pairing correlations.

Vortices confined to superconducting easy flow channels with periodic constrictions exhibit reversible oscillations in the critical current at which vortices begin moving as the external magnetic field is varied. This commensurability scales with the channel shape and arrangement, although screening effects play an important role. For large magnetic fields, some of the vortices become pinned outside of the channels, leading to magnetic hysteresis in the critical current. Some channel configurations also exhibit a dynamical hysteresis in the flux-flow regime near the matching fields.

The films, deposited by UHV magnetron sputtering on the porous Si substrates, inherited their structure made of holes of 5 or 10 nm diameter and of 10 to 40 nm spacing, which provide an artificial pinning structure. The superconducting properties were investigated by transport measurements performed in the presence of magnetic field for different film thickness and substrates with different interpore spacing. Perpendicular upper critical fields measurements present peculiar features such as a change in the H_c2(T) curvature and oscillations in the field dependence of the superconducting resistive transition width at H=1 Tesla. This field value is much higher than typical matching fields in perforated superconductors, as a consequence of the small interpore distance.

The controlled motion of objects through narrow channels is important in many fields. We have fabricated asymmetric weak-pinning channels in a superconducting thin-film strip for controlling the dynamics of vortices. The lack of pinning allows the vortices to move through the channels with the dominant interaction determined by the shape of the channel walls. We present measurements of vortex dynamics in the channels and compare these with similar measurements on a set of uniform-width channels. While the uniform-width channels exhibit a symmetric response for both directions through the channel, the vortex motion through the asymmetric channels is quite different, with substantial asymmetries in both the static depinning and dynamic flux flow. This vortex ratchet effect has a rich dependence on magnetic field and driving force amplitude.

We have performed depth dependent muon spin rotation/relaxation studies of the dynamics of single layer films of {\it Au}Fe and {\it Cu}Mn spin glasses as a function of thickness and of its behavior as a function of distance from the vacuum interface (5-70 nm). A significant reduction in the muon spin relaxation rate as a function of temperature with respect to the bulk material is observed when the muons are stopped near (5-10 nm) the surface of the sample. A similar reduction is observed for the whole sample if the thickness is reduced to e.g. 20 nm and less. This reflects an increased impurity spin dynamics (incomplete freezing) close to the surface although the freezing temperature is only modestly affected by the dimensional reduction.

We have investigated the electrical transport properties of 8 nm thick La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 films, sputter-deposited on SrTiO3 (STO), and etched into 5 micrometer-wide bridges by Ar-ion etching. We find that even slight overetching of the film leads to conductance of the STO substrate, and asymmetric and non-linear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. However, a brief oxygen plasma etch allows full recovery of the insulating character of the substrate. The I-V characteristics of the bridges are then fully linear over a large range of current densities. We find colossal magnetoresistance properties typical for strained LCMO on STO but no signature of non-linear effects (so-called electroresistance) connected to electronic inhomogeneites. In the metallic state below 150 K, the highest current densities lead to heating effects and non-linear I-V characteristics.

At room temperatures the spectra of pure gold and of AuFe are typically metallic with the scattering rate of carriers in AuFe being significantly enlarged due to scattering on localized magnetic moments of Fe ions. In the spin-glass phase of AuFe at T = 5 K a pseudogap in the conductivity spectrum is detected with the magnitude close to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) energy for AuFe: Delta(RKKY) = 2.2 meV. The origin of the pseudogap is associated with partial localization of electrons which mediate the RKKY interaction between localized magnetic Fe centers.

We report a new nonlocal effect in vortex matter, where an electric current confined to a small region of a long and sufficiently narrow superconducting wire causes vortex flow at distances hundreds of inter-vortex separations away. The observed remote traffic of vortices is attributed to a very efficient transfer of a local strain through the one-dimensional vortex lattice, even in the presence of disorder. We also observe mesoscopic fluctuations in the nonlocal vortex flow, which arise due to "traffic jams" when vortex arrangements do not match a local geometry of a superconducting channel.

In F/S/F trilayer geometries where the magnetization directions of the two F-layers can be controlled separately, this leads to the so-called spin switch. Here we show that domain walls in a single F-layer yield a similar effect. We study the transport properties of Ni_0.8Fe_0.2/Nb bilayers structured in strips of different sizes. For large samples a clear enhancement of superconductivity takes place in the resistive transition, in the very narrow field range (order of 0.5 mT) where the magnetization of the Py layer switches and many domains are present. This effect is absent in microstructured samples. Comparison of domain wall width δ_w to the temperature dependent superconductor coherence length ξ_S(T) shows that δ_w ~ ξ_S(T), which means that the Cooper pairs sample a large range of different magnetization directions.

We report on measuring the depairing current J_{dp} in thin superconducting films as a function of temperature. The main difficulties in such measurements are that heating has to be avoided, either due to contacts, or to vortex flow. The latter is almost unavoidable since the sample cross-section is usually larger than the superconducting coherence length ξ_s and the magnetic field penetration depth λ_s. On the other hand, vortex flow is helpful since it homogenizes the distribution of the current across the sample. We used a pulsed current method, which allows to overcome the difficulties caused by dissipation and measured the depairing current in films of thin polycrystalline Nb (low λ_s, low specific resistance ρ) and amorphous Mo_{0.7}Ge_{0.3} (high λ_s, high ρ), structured in the shape of bridges of various width. The experimental values of J_{dp} for different bridge dimensions are compared with theoretical predictions by Kupriyanov and Lukichev for dirty limit superconductors. For the smallest samples we find a very good agreement with theory, over essentially the whole temperature interval below the superconducting critical temperature.

In superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) heterostructures, the exchange field $h_{ex}$ of the F-layer suppresses the superconducting order parameter in the S-layer via the proximity effect. One issue in current research is the effect of a domain state, or, more generally, different directions of $h_{ex}$, on the superconductivity. We used a pulsed-current technique in order to measure the superconducting transport properties of Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$/Nb/Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ ($x$ = 0.54) F/S/F trilayers structured in strips of about 2 $μ$m wide and 20 $μ$m long as function of a small in-plane magnetic field. We find that the depairing current is tied to the magnetization behavior. In particular, we show that the suppression of superconductivity in the S-layer is smallest when the external magnetic field equals the coercive field H$_{c}$ of the F-layers.

For Nb on CeCu_6 we find a strong decrease of T_c with decreasing Nb thickness and a finite critical thickness of the order of 10 nm. Also, dimensional crossovers in H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T) are completely absent, in strong contrast with Nb/Cu. Analysis of the data by a proximity effect model based on the Takahashi-Tachiki theory shows that the data can be explained by taking into account both the high effective mass (or low electronic diffusion constant), {\it and} the large density of states at the Fermi energy which characterize the Heavy Fermion metal.

In principle, the inhomogeneous state can be induced at T_c as function of the F-layer thickness d_F in S/F bilayers and multilayers, which should result in a dip-like characteristic of T_c(d_F). We show the results of measurements on the S/F system Nb/Cu_{1-x}Ni_x, for Ni-concentrations in the range x = 0.5-0.7, where such effects might be expected. We find that the critical thickness for the occurrence of superconductivity is still relatively high, even for these weak ferromagnets. The resulting dip then is intrinsically shallow and difficult to observe, which explains the lack of a clear signature in the T_c(d_F) data.

We have investigated the behaviour of the depairing current J_{dp} in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (F/S/F) trilayers as function of the thickness d_s of the superconducting layers. Theoretically, J_{dp} depends on the superconducting order parameter or the pair density function, which is not homogeneous across the film due to the proximity effect. We use a proximity effect model with two parameters (proximity strength and interface transparency), which can also describe the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T_c on d_s. We compare the computations with the experimentally determined zero-field critical current J_{c0} of small strips (typically 5~ μm wide) of Fe/Nb/Fe trilayers with varying thickness d_{Nb} of the Nb layer. Near T_c the temperature dependence J_{c0}(T) is in good agreement with the expected behaviour, which allows extrapolation to T = 0. Both the absolute values of J_{c0}(0) and the dependence on d_{Nb} agree with the expectations for the depairing current. We conclude that J_{dp} is correctly determined, notwithstanding the fact that the strip width is larger than both the superconducting penetration depth and the superconducting coherence length, and that J_{dp}(d_s) is correctly described by the model.
