The origin of the effect of colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) remains still unexplained. In this work we revisit the spin dynamics of the pseudo-cubic La1-xSrxMnO3 along the Mn-O-Mn bond direction at four x do** values (x < 0.5) and various temperatures and report a new lattice dynamics study at x0=0.2, representative of the optimal do** for CMR. We propose an interpretation of the spin dynamics in terms of orbital polarons. This picture is supported by the observation of a discrete magnetic energy spectrum Enmag (q) characteristic of the internal excitations of "orbital polarons" defined by Mn3+ neighbors surrounding a Mn4+ center with a hole. Because of its hop**, the hole mixes up dynamically all the possible orbital configurations of its surrounding Mn3+ sites with degenerate energies. The Enmag values indicate a lift of orbital degeneracy by phonon excitations. The number n varies with the spatial dimension D of the polaron and the q-range determines its size. At x=0.125 and x=0.3 the spectrum reveals 2D polarons coupled by exchange and 3D "free" polarons respectively, with sizes l=1.67a < 2a in all bond directions. At x0=0.2, the spin and the lattice dynamics provide evidence for chains of orbital polarons of size l=2a with a periodic distribution over ~ 3a and an interaction energy ~ 3 meV. At T < Tc the charges propagate together with the longitudinal acoustic phonons along the chains enhancing their ferromagnetic character. The phase separation between metallic and ferromagnetic chains in a non-metallic matrix may be crucial for CMR.

On the basis of a quantitative agreement found for x(Sr)=0.15 in a model of ordered 2D clusters, the spin wave anomalies of the metallic state can be interpreted in terms of quantized spin waves within the same 2D clusters, embedded in a 3D matrix.

Abstract:
By using polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we show that the spin-lattice quantum entanglement in mutliferroics results in hybrid elementary excitations, involving spin and lattice degrees of freedom. These excitations can be considered as multiferroic Godstone modes. We argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction could be at the origin of this hybridization.

They reveal very unusual excitations. Propagating spin waves are observed in the small q-range up to q=0.25 (lambda=4a), and, beyond, four dispersionless levels. Both types of excitations have a quasi two-dimensional (2D) character. The transition is revealed by a folding of the dispersed magnon branch at q=1/8. In the metallic state, the dispersionless levels reveal ferromagnetic domains with 4 lattice spacings for their size along a and b. They lead to a picture of charge segregation with hole-poor domains surrounded with hole-rich paths. Within this description, the transition appears as the ordering of domains, which can be interpreted in terms of a 2D superstructure of orthogonal stripes.

The study of strong electron correlations in transition metal oxides with modern microscopy and diffraction techniques unveiled a fascinating world of nanosize textures in the spin, charge, and crystal structure. Examples range from high $T_c$ superconducting cuprates and nickelates, to hole doped manganites and cobaltites. However, in many cases the appearance of these textures is accompanied with "glassiness" and multiscale/multiphase effects, which complicate significantly their experimental verification. Here, we demonstrate how nuclear magnetic resonance may be uniquely used to probe nanosize orbital textures in magnetic transition metal oxides. As a convincing example we show for the first time the detection of nanoscale orbital phase separation in the ground state of the ferromagnetic insulator La$_{0.875}$Sr$_{0.125}$MnO$_3$.

Below T$_C$, in the quasi-metallic state (T=150K), nearly q-independent energy levels are observed. They are characteristic of standing spin waves confined into finite-size ferromagnetic domains, defined in {\bf a, b) plane for x=0.17 and in all q-directions for x=0.2. They allow an estimation of the domain size, a few lattice spacings, and of the magnetic coupling constants inside the domains. These constants, anisotropic, are typical of an orbital-ordered state, allowing to characterize the domains as "hole-poor". The precursor state of the CMR metallic phase appears, therefore, as an assembly of small orbital-ordered domains.

A neutron scattering study of the superlattice {\bf Q$_0$}= (0,0,1+/4)$_{cub}$ peak, and of the magnetic excitations are reported in the x$_{Ca}$=0.2 sample. The occurrence of this superstructure is associated with the observation of a gap in the spin dynamics, at a {\bf q$_0$} wave-vector ({\bf q$_0$}={\bf Q$_0$}-$τ$) with the same modulus $|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ in all directions, which divides the dispersion into two regimes. For $|${\bf q}$|$$<$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ the dispersion is splitted into two or three curves. For $|${\bf q}$|$$>$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$, magnetic excitations lock on acoustic and optic phonon energies, revealing a new kind of magneto-vibrational coupling.
We suggest an analysis in terms of two distinct magnetic couplings, associated with two ferromagnetic media involved into a collective state.

We describe the evolution of the static and dynamic spin correlations of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, for x=0.1, 0.125 and 0.2, where the system evolves from the canted magnetic state towards the insulating ferromagnetic state, approaching the metallic transition (x=0.22).
In the x=0.1 sample, the observation of two spin wave branches typical of two distinct types of magnetic coupling, and of a modulation in the elastic diffuse scattering characteristic of ferromagnetic inhomogeneities, confirms the static and dynamic inhomogeneous features previously observed at x$<$0.1. The anisotropic q-dependence of the intensity of the low-energy spin wave suggests a bidimensionnal character for the static inhomogeneities. At x=0.125, which corresponds to the occurence of a ferromagnetic and insulating state, the two spin wave branches reduce to a single one, but anisotropic. At this concentration, an anomaly appears at {\bf q$_0$}=(1.25,1.25,0), that could be related to an underlying periodicity, as arising from (1.5,1.5,0) superstructures.
At x=0.2, the spin-wave branch is isotropic. In addition to the anomaly observed at q$_0$, extra magnetic excitations are observed at larger q, forming an optical branch. The two dispersion curves suggest an anti-crossing behavior at some {\bf q$_0$'} value, which could be explained by a folding due to an underlying perodicity involving four cubic lattice spacings.

We present a study of a microtwinned single crystal of LaMnO$_3$ by means of implanted muons. Two muon stop** sites are identified from the symmetry of the internal field in the ordered phase. The temperature dependence of these fields yields the behavior of the staggered magnetization from which a static critical exponent ($β=0.36(2)$) is extracted and discussed. The muon spin-spin relaxation rate shows a critical slowing down (contrary to preliminary findings) with a critical exponent $n=0.7(1)$, witnessing the Ising nature of the dynamic fluctuations. The muon precession frequencies vs. applied magnetic field reveal the saturation of the weak ferromagnetic domain structure originated by the Dzialoshinski-Moriya antisymmetric exchange.

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in a La$_{0.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$MnO$_3$ untwinned crystal, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic canted magnetic structure with ferromagnetic layers.
The elastic small q scattering exhibits a modulation with an anisotropic q-dependence. It can be pictured by ferromagnetic inhomogeneities or polarons with a platelike shape, the largest size ($\approx17Å$) and largest inter-polaron distance ($\approx$ 38$Å$) being within the ferromagnetic layers. Comparison with observations performed on Ca-doped samples, which show the growth of the magnetic polarons with do**, suggests that this growth is faster for the Sr than for the Ca substitution. Below the gap of the spin wave branch typical of the AF layered magnetic structure, an additional spin wave branch reveals a ferromagnetic and isotropic coupling, already found in Ca-doped samples. Its q-dependent intensity, very anisotropic, closely reflects the ferromagnetic correlations found for the static clusters. All these results agree with a two-phase electronic segregation occurring on a very small scale, although some characteristics of a canted state are also observed suggesting a weakly inhomogeneous state.

We performed high resolution diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Mn_{12}-acetate. Using a very high energy resolution, we could separate the energy levels corresponding to the splitting of the lowest S multiplet. Data were analyzed within a single spin model (S=10 ground state), using a spin Hamiltonian with parameters up to 4^{th} order.
The non regular spacing of the transition energies unambiguously shows the presence of high order terms in the anisotropy (D= -0.457(2) cm^{-1}, B_4^0 = -2.33(4) 10^{-5}cm^{-1}).
The relative intensity of the lowest energy peaks is very sensitive to the small transverse term, supposed to be mainly responsible for quantum tunneling.
This allows an accurate determination of this term in zero magnetic field (B_4^4 = \pm 3.0(5) 10^{-5} cm^{-1}). The neutron results are discussed in view of recent experiments and theories.

Elastic neutron scattering experiments performed in semi-conducting La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 single crystals (x=0.05, 0.08), reveal new features in the problem of electronic phase separation and metal insulator transition. Below TN, the observation of a broad magnetic modulation in the q-dependent scattering intensity, centered at nearly identical qm whatever the q direction, can be explained by a liquid-like spatial distribution of similar magnetic droplets. A semi-quantitative description of their magnetic state, diameter, and average distance, can be done using a two-phase model. Such a picture can explain the anomalous characteristics of the spin wave branches and may result from unmixing forces between charge carriers predicted from the s-d model.
