MHONGOOSE -- A MeerKAT Nearby Galaxy HI Survey

Abstract: The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 1… ▽ More The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. Gender Systematics in the NRAO Proposal Review System

This includes the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) where there is evidence of a gender imbalance in the rank of proposals with male principal investigators (PIs) favored over female PIs. This includes the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) where there is evidence of a gender imbalance in the rank of proposals with male principal investigators (PIs) favored over female PIs. Since semester 2017A (17A), the NRAO has taken the following steps: (1) inform science review panels (SRPs) and the telescope time allocation committee (TAC) about the gender imbalance; and (2) increase the female representation on SRPs and the TAC to reflect the community demographics. Here we analyze SRP normalized rank-ordered scores, or linear ranks, by PI gender for NRAO observing proposals from semesters 12A-21A. We use bootstrap resampling to generate modeled distributions and the Anderson-Darling (AD) test to evaluate the probability that the linear rank distributions for male and female PIs are drawn from the same parent sample. We find that between semesters 12A-17A that male PIs are favored over female PIs (AD p-value 0.0084), whereas between semesters 17B-21A female PIs are favored over male PIs, but at a lower significance (AD p-value 0.11). Therefore the gender imbalance is currently being ameliorated, but this imbalance may have been reversed. Regardless, we plan to adopt a dual-anonymous approach to proposal review to reduce the possibility of bias to occur. △ Less

It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 x 12-m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. WALLABY aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (-90 degr < Dec < +30 degr) to a redshift of z < 0.26, and generate spectral line image cubes at ~30 arcsec resolution and ~1.6 mJy/beam per 4 km/s channel sensitivity. ASKAP's instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF's 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, WALLABY is expected to detect over half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z ~ 0.05 (~200 Mpc). The scientific goals of WALLABY include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the HI properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of previous large-scale HI surveys. ALFAZOA Shallow covered 900 square degrees at full sensitivity from 30° ${\leq} l {\leq} $75° and |b|$ {\leq}$ 10° and an additional 460 square degrees at limited sensitivity at lat… ▽ More The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance (ALFAZOA) Shallow Survey is a blind HI survey of the extragalactic sky behind the northern Milky Way conducted with the ALFA receiver on the 305m Arecibo Radio Telescope. ALFAZOA Shallow covered 900 square degrees at full sensitivity from 30° ${\leq} l {\leq} $75° and |b|$ {\leq}$ 10° and an additional 460 square degrees at limited sensitivity at latitudes up to 20°. It has an rms sensitivity of 5-7 mJy and a velocity resolution of 9 - 20.6 km s$^{-1}$, and detected 403 galaxies out to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km s$^{-1}$, with an angular resolution of 3.4' and a positional accuracy between 0.2' and 1.7'. The survey is complete above an integrated line flux $F_{HI}$ = 2.0 Jy km s$^{-1}$ for half the survey, and above $F_{HI}$ = 2.8 Jy km s$^{-1}$ for the other half. Forty-three percent of the ALFAZOA HI detections have at least one possible optical/NIR counterpart in the literature, and an additional 16% have counterparts that only included previous HI measurements. There are fewer counterparts in regions of high extinction and for galaxies with lower HI mass. Comparing the results of the survey to the predictions of Erdogdu et al. (2006), and using their nomenclature, ALFAZOA confirms the position and extent in the ZOA of the C7, C$ζ$, Pegasus, Corona Borealis and Delphinus structures, but not of the Cygnus void. Two new structures are identified, both connected to the C7 overdensity; one extends to 35°, and the other crosses the ZOA. △ Less

The Nancay HI Zone of Avoidance survey of 2MASS bright galaxies

For our sample selection we adopted an isophotal extinction-corrected K-band magnitude limit of $K_s^o = 11.25$mag, corresponding to the firs… ▽ More To complement the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and the 2MASS Tully-Fisher survey (2MTF) a search for 21cm HI line emission of 2MASS bright galaxy candidates has been pursued along the dust-obscured plane of the Milky Way with the 100m Nancay Radio Telescope. For our sample selection we adopted an isophotal extinction-corrected K-band magnitude limit of $K_s^o = 11.25$mag, corresponding to the first 2MRS data release and 2MTF, for which the 2MASX completeness level remains fairly constant deep into the Zone of Avoidance (ZoA). About one thousand galaxies without prior redshift measurement accessible from Nancay (Dec > -40°) were observed to an rms noise level of ~3 mJy for the velocity range -250 to 10'600 km/s. This resulted in 220 clear and 12 marginal detections of the target sample. Only few detections have redshifts above 8000 km/s due to recurring radio frequency interference (RFI). A further 29 detections and 6 marginals have their origin in non-target galaxies in the telescope beam. The newly detected galaxies are on average considerably more \HI-rich (mostly $10^9 - 10^{10}$M$_\odot$) compared to systematic (blind) HI surveys. The HI detections reveal various new filaments crossing the mostly uncharted northern ZoA (e.g. at $\ell \sim 90°, 130°, 160°$), whilst consolidating galaxy agglomerations in Monoceros and Puppis ($\ell \sim 220°, 240°$). Considerably new insight has been gained about the extent of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster through the confirmation of a ridge ($\ell \sim 160°$) encompassing the 3C129 cluster that links Perseus-Pisces to Lynx, and the continuation of the second Perseus-Pisces arm ($\ell \sim 90°$) across the ZoA. △ Less

An Overview of the MHONGOOSE Survey: Observing Nearby Galaxies with MeerKAT

Our extremely deep observations, down to HI column density limits of well below 10^{18} cm^{-2} - or a few… ▽ More MHONGOOSE is a deep survey of the neutral hydrogen distribution in a representative sample of 30 nearby disk and dwarf galaxies with HI masses from 10^6 to ~10^{11} M_sun, and luminosities from M_R ~ -12 to M_R ~ -22. The sample is selected to uniformly cover the available range in log(M_HI). Our extremely deep observations, down to HI column density limits of well below 10^{18} cm^{-2} - or a few hundred times fainter than the typical HI disks in galaxies - will directly detect the effects of cold accretion from the intergalactic medium and the links with the cosmic web. These observations will be the first ever to probe the very low-column density neutral gas in galaxies at these high resolutions. Combination with data at other wavelengths, most of it already available, will enable accurate modelling of the properties and evolution of the mass components in these galaxies and link these with the effects of environment, dark matter distribution, and other fundamental properties such as halo mass and angular momentum. MHONGOOSE can already start addressing some of the SKA-1 science goals and will provide a comprehensive inventory of the processes driving the transformation and evolution of galaxies in the nearby universe at high resolution and over 5 orders of magnitude in column density. It will be a Nearby Galaxies Legacy Survey that will be unsurpassed until the advent of the SKA, and can serve as a highly visible, lasting statement of MeerKAT's capabilities. △ Less

The WSRT ZoA Perseus-Pisces Filament wide-field HI imaging survey I. HI catalogue and atlas

Abstract: We present results of a blind 21cm HI-line imaging survey of a galaxy overdensity located behind the Milky Way at $\ell,b$ $\approx$ 160 deg, 0.5 deg. The overdensity corresponds to a Zone-of-Avoidance crossing of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster filament. Although it is known that this filament contains an X-ray galaxy cluster (3C129) hosting two strong radio galaxies, little is known about galaxi… ▽ More We present results of a blind 21cm HI-line imaging survey of a galaxy overdensity located behind the Milky Way at $\ell,b$ $\approx$ 160 deg, 0.5 deg. The overdensity corresponds to a Zone-of-Avoidance crossing of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster filament. Although it is known that this filament contains an X-ray galaxy cluster (3C129) hosting two strong radio galaxies, little is known about galaxies associated with this potentially rich cluster because of the high Galactic dust extinction. We mapped a sky area of $\sim$9.6 sq.deg using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in a hexagonal mosaic of 35 pointings observed for 12 hours each, in the radial velocity range $cz = 2400 - 16600$ km/s. The survey has a sensitivity of 0.36 mJy/beam rms at a velocity resolution of 16.5 km/s. We detected 211 galaxies, 62% of which have a near-infrared counterpart in the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey. We present a catalogue of the HI properties and an HI atlas containing total intensity maps, position-velocity diagrams, global HI profiles and UKIDSS counterpart images. For the resolved galaxies we also present HI velocity fields and radial HI surface density profiles. A brief analysis of the structures outlined by these galaxies finds that 87 of them lie at the distance of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster ($cz \sim 4000 - 8000$ km/s) and seem to form part of the 3C129 cluster. Further 72 detections trace an overdensity at a velocity of $cz \approx$ 10000 km/s and seem to coincide with a structure predicted from mass density reconstructions in the first 2MASS Redshift Survey. △ Less

The Parkes HI Zone of Avoidance Survey

Abstract: A blind HI survey of the extragalactic sky behind the southern Milky Way has been conducted with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope. The survey covers the Galactic longitude range 212 < l < 36 and Galactic latitudes |b| < 5, and yields 883 galaxies to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km/s. The survey covers the sky within the HIPASS area to greater sensitivity, finding lower… ▽ More A blind HI survey of the extragalactic sky behind the southern Milky Way has been conducted with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope. The survey covers the Galactic longitude range 212 < l < 36 and Galactic latitudes |b| < 5, and yields 883 galaxies to a recessional velocity of 12,000 km/s. The survey covers the sky within the HIPASS area to greater sensitivity, finding lower HI-mass galaxies at all distances, and probing more completely the large-scale structures at and beyond the distance of the Great Attractor. Fifty-one percent of the HI detections have an optical/NIR counterpart in the literature. A further 27% have new counterparts found in existing, or newly obtained, optical/NIR images. The counterpart rate drops in regions of high foreground stellar crowding and extinction, and for low-HI mass objects. Only 8% of all counterparts have a previous optical redshift measurement. A notable new galaxy is HIZOA J1353-58, a possible companion to the Circinus galaxy. Merging this catalog with the similarly-conducted northern extension (Donley et al. 2005), large-scale structures are delineated, including those within the Puppis and Great Attractor regions, and the Local Void. Several newly-identified structures are revealed here for the first time. Three new galaxy concentrations (NW1, NW2 and NW3) are key in confirming the diagonal crossing of the Great Attractor Wall between the Norma cluster and the CIZA J1324.7-5736 cluster. Further contributors to the general mass overdensity in that area are two new clusters (CW1 and CW2) in the nearer Centaurus Wall, one of which forms part of the striking 180 deg (100/h Mpc) long filament that dominates the southern sky at velocities of ~3000 km/s, and the suggestion of a further Wall at the Great Attractor distance at slightly higher longitudes. △ Less

The ALFA ZOA Deep Survey: First Results

ALFA ZOA Deep will cover about 300 square degrees of sky behind the Galactic plane in both the inner (30 deg < l < 75 deg; b < |2 deg|) and outer (175 deg < l < 207 deg; -2 deg < b < +1 deg) Galaxy, using the Arecibo Radio Telescope. First results from the… ▽ More The Arecibo L-Band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance (ALFA ZOA) Deep Survey is the deepest and most sensitive blind Hi survey undertaken in the ZOA. ALFA ZOA Deep will cover about 300 square degrees of sky behind the Galactic plane in both the inner (30 deg < l < 75 deg; b < |2 deg|) and outer (175 deg < l < 207 deg; -2 deg < b < +1 deg) Galaxy, using the Arecibo Radio Telescope. First results from the survey have found 61 galaxies within a 15 square degree area centered on l = 192 deg and b = -2 deg. The survey reached its expected sensitivity of rms = 1 mJy at 9 km/s channel resolution, and is shown to be complete above integrated flux, F_HI = 0.5 Jy km/s. The positional accuracy of the survey is 28 arcsec and detections are found out to a recessional velocity of nearly 19,000 km/s. The survey confirms the extent of the Orion and Abell 539 clusters behind the plane of the Milky Way and discovers expansive voids, at 10,000 km/s and 18,000 km/s. 26 detections (43%) have a counterpart in the literature, but only two of these have known redshift. Counterparts are 20% less common beyond v_hel = 10,000 km/s and 33% less common at extinctions higher than AB = 3.5 mag. ALFA ZOA Deep survey is able to probe large scale structure beyond redshifts that even the most modern wide-angle surveys have been able to detect in the Zone of Avoidance at any wavelength. △ Less

Monitoring the Sky with the Prototype All-Sky Imager on the LWA1

PASI cross-correlates a live stream of 260 dual-polarization dipole antennas of the LWA1, creates all-sky images, and uploads them to the LWA-TV website in near real-time. PASI has recorded over 13,000 hours of all-sky images at frequencies betw… ▽ More We present a description of the Prototype All-Sky Imager (PASI), a backend correlator and imager of the first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1). Detection of Radio Emission from Fireballs

Abstract: We present the findings from the Prototype All-Sky Imager (PASI), a backend correlator of the first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1), which has recorded over 11,000 hours of all-sky images at frequencies between 25 and 75 MHz. In a search of this data for radio transients, we have found 49 long (10s of seconds) duration transients. Ten of these transients correlate both spatially and te… ▽ More We present the findings from the Prototype All-Sky Imager (PASI), a backend correlator of the first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1), which has recorded over 11,000 hours of all-sky images at frequencies between 25 and 75 MHz. In a search of this data for radio transients, we have found 49 long (10s of seconds) duration transients. Ten of these transients correlate both spatially and temporally with large meteors (fireballs), and their signatures suggest that fireballs emit a previously undiscovered low frequency, non-thermal pulse. This emission provides a new probe into the physics of meteors and identifies a new form of naturally occurring radio transient foreground. △ Less

Limits on GRB Prompt Radio Emission Using the LWA1

While our limits depend on the zenith angle of the obser… ▽ More As a backend to the first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1) the Prototype All Sky Imager (PASI) has been imaging the sky $>$ -26$^{\circ}$ declination during 34 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) between January 2012 and May 2013. Using this data we were able to put the most stringent limits to date on prompt low frequency emission from GRBs. While our limits depend on the zenith angle of the observed GRB, we estimate a 1$σ$ RMS sensitivity of 68, 65 and 70 Jy for 5 second integrations at 37.9, 52.0, and 74.0 MHz at zenith. These limits are relevant for pulses $\geq$ 5 s and are limited by dispersion smearing. For pulses of length 5 s we are limited to dispersion measures ($DM$s) $\leq$ 220, 570, and 1,600 pc cm$^{-3}$ for the frequencies above. For pulses lasting longer than 5s, the $DM$ limits increase linearly with the duration of the pulse. We also report two interesting transients, which are, as of yet, of unknown origin, and are not coincident with any known GRBs. For general transients, we give rate density limits of $\leq$ $7.5\times10^{-3}$, $2.9\times10^{-2}$, and $1.4\times10^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ deg$^{-2}$ with pulse energy densities $>1.3\times 10^{-22}$, $1.1\times 10^{-22}$, and $1.4\times 10^{-22}$ J m$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ and pulse widths of 5 s at the frequencies given above. △ Less

We take advan… ▽ More High-resolution 21-cm HI deep fields provide spatially and kinematically resolved neutral gas maps at different redshifts, which are key to understanding galaxy evolution across cosmic time and testing predictions of cosmological simulations. Here we present results from a pilot for the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) done with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We take advantage of the newly expanded capabilities of the telescope to probe the redshift interval 0<z<0.193 in one observation. We observe the COSMOS field for 50 hours, which contains 413 galaxies with optical spectroscopic redshifts in the imaged field of view of 34' x 34' and the observed redshift interval. We have detected neutral hydrogen gas in 33 galaxies in different environments spanning the probed redshift range, including three without a previously known spectroscopic redshift. The detections have a range of HI and stellar masses, indicating the diversity of galaxies we are probing. We discuss the observations, data reduction, results and highlight interesting detections. We find that the VLA's B-array is the ideal configuration for HI deep fields since its long spacings mitigate RFI. This pilot shows that the VLA is ready to carry out such a survey, and serves as a test for future HI deep fields planned with other SKA pathfinders. △ Less

The galaxy was discovered at low Galactic latitude by 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen (Hi). We have obtained follow-up observations with the EVLA and the 0.9-m SARA optical telescope. The Hi distribution overlaps an uncataloged, potential optical counterpart. The Hi linear size is 1.4 kpc at our adopted distance of D = 7 Mpc, but the distance estimate is uncertain as Hubble's law is unreliable at low recessional velocities. The optical counterpart has mB = 16.9 mag and B - R = 0.1 mag. These characteristics, including MHI = 107.0 M\odot and LB = 107.5 L\odot, if at 7 Mpc, indicate that this galaxy is a blue compact dwarf, but this remains uncertain until further follow-up observations are complete. This Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) survey finds new HI galaxies which lie hidden behind the Milky Way, and also provides redshifts for partially-obscured gal… ▽ More The Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) is being used to conduct a low-Galactic latitude survey, to map the distribution of galaxies and large-scale structures behind the Milky Way through detection of galaxies' neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm emission. This Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) survey finds new HI galaxies which lie hidden behind the Milky Way, and also provides redshifts for partially-obscured galaxies known at other wavelengths. Before the commencement of the full survey, two low-latitude precursor regions were observed, totalling 138 square degrees, with 72 HI galaxies detected. Detections through the inner Galaxy generally have no cataloged counterparts in any other waveband, due to the heavy extinction and stellar confusion. Detections through the outer Galaxy are more likely to have 2MASS counterparts. We present the results of these precursor observations, including a catalog of the detected galaxies, with their HI parameters. The survey sensitivity is well described by a flux- and linewidth-dependent signal-to-noise ratio of 6.5. ALFA ZOA galaxies which also have HI measurements in the literature show good agreement between our measurements and previous work. The inner Galaxy precursor region was chosen to overlap the HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey so ALFA performance could be quickly assessed. The outer Galaxy precursor region lies north of the Parkes sky. Low-latitude large-scale structure in this region is revealed, including an overdensity of galaxies near l = 183 deg and between 5000 - 6000 km/s in the ZOA. The full ALFA ZOA survey will be conducted in two phases: a shallow survey using the observing techniques of the precursor observations, and also a deep phase with much longer integration time, with thousands of galaxies predicted for the final catalog. △ Less

Parkes HI observations of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way. II. The Crux and Great Attractor regions (l ~ 289 degree to 338 degree)

Abstract: As part of our programme to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we observed 314 optically-selected, partially-obscured galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) in the Crux and Great Attractor (GA) regions. The observations were conducted with the Parkes 64m radio telescope, in a single-pixel pointed mode, reaching an rms noise level of typically 2-6 mJy ove… ▽ More As part of our programme to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we observed 314 optically-selected, partially-obscured galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) in the Crux and Great Attractor (GA) regions. The observations were conducted with the Parkes 64m radio telescope, in a single-pixel pointed mode, reaching an rms noise level of typically 2-6 mJy over the velocity search range of 400<v<10500km/s. A total of 162 galaxies were detected. This can be explained by the prominence of the GA overdensity in the survey regions, which leads to a relatively higher fraction of nearby galaxies. It is also evident from the quite narrow velocity distribution (largely confined to 3000-6000km/s) and deviates significantly from the expectation of a uniform galaxy distribution for the given sensitivity and velocity range. No systematic differences were found between detections and non-detections, in terms of latitude, foreground extinction, or environment, except for the very central part of the rich Norma cluster, where hardly any galaxies were detected. A detailed investigation of the HI content of the galaxies reveals strong HI deficiency at the core of the Norma cluster (within about a 0.4 Abell radius), similar to what has been found in the Coma cluster. The redshifts obtained by this observing technique result in a substantial reduction of the so-called redshift ZOA. This is obvious when analysing the large-scale structure of the new HI data in combination with data from optical ZOA redshift surveys. The lower latitude detections provide further evidence of the extension of the Norma Wall, across the ZOA, in particular its bending towards the Cen-Crux clusters above the Galactic plane at slightly higher redshift, rather than a straight continuation towards the Centaurus clusters. △ Less

However, near infrared follow up observations of ALFA ZOA sources found in regions of lowest obscuration could reveal whether some of these sources could be objects in which little or no star formation has taken place ("dark galaxies"). We present here the results of ALFA ZOA precursor observations on two patches of sky totaling 140 square degrees (near l=40 degrees, and l=192 degrees). We have measured HI parameters for detections from these observations, and cross-correlated with the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED). A significant fraction of the objects have never been detected at any wavelength. For those galaxies that have been previously detected, a significant fraction have no previously known redshift, and no previous HI detection. △ Less

The entire Virgo Cluster region has been observed in the Northern HIPASS. The galaxy catalogue, NHICAT, contains 1002 sources with v_hel > 300 km/s . Sources with -300 km/s < v_hel < 300 km/s were excluded to avoid contamination by Galactic emission. In total, the entire HIPASS survey has found 5317 galaxies identified purely by their HI content. The emphasi… ▽ More The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) is one of several HI surveys utilising the new Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) fitted to the 305m radio telescope at Arecibo. The survey is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments to higher sensitivity, higher velocity resolution and higher spatial resolution than previous fully sampled, 21 cm multibeam surveys. The emphasis is on making detailed observations of nearby objects although the large system bandwidth (100 MHz) will allow us to quantify the HI properties over a large instantaneous velocity range. In this paper we describe the survey and its goals and present the results from the precursor observations of a 5 degree x 1 degree region containing the nearby (~10 Mpc) NGC 628 group. We have detected all the group galaxies in the region including the low mass (M{HI}~10^7Mo) dwarf, dw0137+1541 (Briggs, 1986). The fluxes and velocities for these galaxies compare well with previously published data. There is no intra-group neutral gas detected down to a limiting column density of 2x10^{18}cm^{-2}. In addition to the group galaxies we have detected 22 galaxies beyond the NGC 628 group, 9 of which are previously uncatalogued.(Abridged) △ Less

A Massive Spiral Galaxy in the Zone of Avoidance

It was found during the course of a systematic HI survey of the southern Zone of Avoidance (|b| < 5 deg) with the multibeam system at the 64m Parkes radio telescope. Follow-up observations with the Australia Telescope Co… ▽ More We report the discovery of a very HI-massive disk galaxy, HIZOA J0836-43, at a velocity of v_hel = 10689 km/s, corresponding to a distance of 148 Mpc (assuming H_0=75 km/s/Mpc). It was found during the course of a systematic HI survey of the southern Zone of Avoidance (|b| < 5 deg) with the multibeam system at the 64m Parkes radio telescope. Follow-up observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) reveal an extended HI disk. We derive an HI mass of 7.5 x 10^10 Msun. Using the HI radius, we estimate a total dynamical mass of 1.4 x 10^12 Msun, similar to the most massive known disk galaxies such as Malin 1. HIZOA J0836-43 lies deep in the Zone of Avoidance (l, b = 262.48 deg, -1.64 deg) where the optical extinction is very high, A_B = 9.8. However, in the near-infrared wavebands, where the extinction is considerably lower, HIZOA J0836-43 is clearly detected by both DENIS and 2MASS. Deep AAT near-infrared (Ks and H-band) images show that HIZOA J0836-43 is an inclined disk galaxy with a prominent bulge (scale length 2.5 arcsec or 1.7 kpc), and an extended disk (scale length 7 arcsec or 4.7 kpc) which can be traced along the major axis out to a radius of 20 arcsec or 13.4 kpc (at 20 mag/arcsec^2 in Ks). The HI disk is much more extended, having a radius of 66 kpc at 1 Msun/pc^2. For the 42 HII regions with known distances, the average emissivity of the column behind the HII region is derived. 74 MHz emissivity values range between 0.3 and 1.0 Kelvin per parsec for a model assuming uniform distribution of emissivity. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16%) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6%) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11%), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5%) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these 'blank fields' are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions. Isolated 'Dark galaxy' candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of ABj < 1 mag and the blank fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an ABj extinction < 1 mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the Hipass survey. △ Less

The Distance and Metallicity of the Newly Discovered, Nearby Irregular Galaxy HIZSS3

Its radio characteristics are consistent with it being nearby (~ 1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular (dIm) galaxy. MMT spectra of the H II region are used to derive the line-of-sight extinction (E(B-V) = 1.41 +/- 0.04) and gas metallicity (log O/H + 12 ~ 7.8). ESO VLT near-IR images clearly reveal a resolved stellar population. Narrow-band Pbeta images of the H II region are used in combination with previously published Halpha data to obtain an independent line-of-sight extinction estimate: E(B-V) = 1.32 +/- 0.04. The adopted foreground extinction is E(B-V) = 1.36 +/- 0.06. Based on the K-band luminosity function and K,J-K color-magnitude diagram, the apparent magnitude and color of the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB) are derived. In turn, these parameters are combined with the adopted foreground extinction to estimate the distance (1.69 +/- 0.07 Mpc) and mean red giant branch metallicity ([Fe/H] = -0.5 +/- 0.1). As an ensemble, these new observations significantly strengthen the conclusion that HIZSS3 is a newly discovered low-mass dIm lurking behind the Milky Way in the outskirts of the Local Group. △ Less

The survey has a median rms noise of 6.0 mJy/beam and is complete to a mean flux density of 22 mJy. We have searched for multiwavelength counterparts to the 77 galaxies detected here: 19, 27, and 11 have a likely optical, 2MASS, and IRAS cataloged counterpart, respectively. A further 16 galaxies have likely visible counterparts on the Digitized Sky Survey. The detection of these 77 galaxies allows a closer inspection of the large-scale structures in these regions. We see several filaments crossing the Galactic plane, one of which appears to be the continuation of a sine-wave like feature that can be traced across the whole southern sky. An analysis of the HI mass function suggests that the regions studied here may be underdense. One particularly noteworthy galaxy is HIZOA J0630+08 (l,b = 203 deg., -0.9 deg.) with a velocity of 367 km/s. We suggest that it belongs to the nearby Orion Group which includes a small number of dwarf galaxies. The newly detected galaxies improve our understanding of the properties of several voids, such as the Orion, Gemini, and Canis Major Voids. △ Less

While the galaxy candidate inspection is not yet quite complete, and final number not yet determined, the survey has yielded about 1000 galaxies. The data, in… ▽ More The 64-m Parkes telescope, equipped with the 21-cm multibeam receiver, has completed a sensitive survey (typically 6 mJy per beam rms) for HI galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance accessible to the telescope, 196 < l < 52 deg, and |b| < 5 deg. While the galaxy candidate inspection is not yet quite complete, and final number not yet determined, the survey has yielded about 1000 galaxies. The data, in the form of three-dimensional datacubes, have been inspected by eye, and candidate lists assembled, and about half have now been checked for reality, and accepted into the final catalog. The distributions on the sky and in redshift space are presented, showing galaxies belonging to previously-known structures, and newly-discovered features. Of the 469 confirmed HI galaxies, 191 have a NIR source within 6 arcmin in the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog, but the incidence of NIR counterparts is a strong function of longitude: in the low obscuration, low stellar surface density Puppis region, 131 of the 186 HI galaxies have 2MASS counterparts (70 percent), while in the Galactic bulge region, only 6 of the 155 HI detections have a 2MASS extended source coincident (4 percent). This is attributable to the HI survey's ability to detect galaxies even in regions of high foreground stellar surface density. △ Less

(2000) and Rivers (2000) in a survey for nearby galaxies hidden by the disk of the Milky Way. Its radio characteristics are consistent with this being a nearby (~1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular galaxy (dIm). Our optical imaging failed to reveal a resolved stellar population, but did detect an extended H-alpha emission region. The location of the H-alpha source is coincident with a partially-resolved H I cloud in the 21-cm map. Spectroscopy confirms that the H$α$ source has a similar radial velocity to that of the H I emission at this location, and thus we have identified an optical counterpart. The H$α$ emission (100 pc in diameter and with a luminosity of $1.4\times10^{38}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) is characteristic of a single H II region containing a modest population of OB stars. The galaxy's radial velocity and distance from the solar apex suggests that it is not a Local Group member, although a more accurate distance is needed to be certain. The properties of HIZSS 3 are comparable to those of GR 8, a nearby dIm with a modest amount of current star formation. Further observations are needed to characterize its stellar population, determine the chemical abundances, and obtain a more reliable distance estimate. △ Less

Abstract: We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Identification of an optical counterpart is relatively unambiguous for more than ~90% of our HI galaxies. The galaxies appear to be embedded in a sheet at the cluster velocity which extends for more than 30 deg across the search area. At the nominal cluster distance of ~20 Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated structure more than 10 Mpc in extent. A velocity gradient across the structure is detected, with radial velocities increasing by \~500 km/s from SE to NW. The clustering of galaxies evident in optical surveys is only weakly suggested in the spatial distribution of our HI detections. Our results suggest a considerable deficit of HI-rich galaxies in the centre of the cluster. However, relative to the field, there is a 3(+/-1)-fold excess of HI-rich galaxies in the outer parts of the cluster where galaxies may be infalling towards the cluster for the first time. △ Less

Abstract: As part of our program to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the Milky Way, we used the Parkes 210 ft (64 m) radio telescope for pointed HI observations of a sample of low surface-brightness (due to heavy obscuration) spiral galaxies selected from the deep optical Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) galaxy catalog in the Hydra/Antlia region (Kraan-Korteweg 2000a). Searching a simultaneous v… ▽ More As part of our program to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the Milky Way, we used the Parkes 210 ft (64 m) radio telescope for pointed HI observations of a sample of low surface-brightness (due to heavy obscuration) spiral galaxies selected from the deep optical Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) galaxy catalog in the Hydra/Antlia region (Kraan-Korteweg 2000a). Searching a simultaneous velocity range of either 300 to 5500 km/s or 300 to 10500 km/s to an rms level of typically 2 - 4 mJy resulted in detections in 61 of the 139 pointings, leading to a total of 66 detections (an additional detection was made in a reference position, and two other pointings revealed two and four independent signals respectively). Except for 2 strong HI emitters identified in the shallow Zone of Avoidance HI survey (Henning et al. 2000), all HI detections are new. An analysis of the properties of the observed and detected galaxies prove that pointed HI observations of highly obscured galaxies allow the tracing of a population of nearby, intrinsically large and bright spiral galaxies that otherwise would not be recovered. The new data identified a previously unrecognized nearby group at l=287.5, b=-9.5, V=1700 km/s, the continuation of the Hydra/Antlia filament on the opposite side of the Galactic plane, and helped to delimit a distinct void in the ZOA centered at 2000 km/s. △ Less

HI deficiency in the galaxy cluster ACO 3627. ATCA observations in the Great Attractor region

Abstract: ATCA 21 cm HI observations of the rich galaxy cluster ACO 3627 in the Great Attractor region are presented. Three fields of 30' diameter located within one Abell radius of ACO 3627 were observed with a resolution of 15'' and an rms noise of \sim 1 mJy/beam. Only two galaxies were detected in these fields. We compare their HI distribution to new optical R-band images and discuss their velocity fi… ▽ More ATCA 21 cm HI observations of the rich galaxy cluster ACO 3627 in the Great Attractor region are presented. Three fields of 30' diameter located within one Abell radius of ACO 3627 were observed with a resolution of 15'' and an rms noise of \sim 1 mJy/beam. Only two galaxies were detected in these fields. We compare their HI distribution to new optical R-band images and discuss their velocity fields. The first galaxy is a gas-rich unperturbed spiral whereas the second shows a peculiar HI distribution. The estimated 3-sigma HI mass limit of our observations is \sim 7 x 10^8 M_{\odot} for a line width of 150 km s^{-1}. The non-detection of a considerable number of luminous spiral galaxies indicates that the spiral galaxies are HI deficient. The low detection rate is comparable to the HI deficient Coma cluster (Bravo-Alfaro et al. 2000). ACO 3627 is a bright X-ray cluster. We therefore suspect that ram pressure strip** is responsible for the HI deficiency of the bright cluster spirals. △ Less

Abstract: We report the discovery, from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), of an isolated cloud of neutral hydrogen which we believe to be extragalactic. The HI mass of the cloud (HIPASS J1712-64) is very low, 1.7 x 10^7 Msun, using an estimated distance of ~3.2 Mpc. Most significantly, we have found no optical companion to this object to very faint limits (mu(B)~ 27 mag arcsec^-2). The HI mass of the cloud (HIPASS J1712-64) is very low, 1.7 x 10^7 Msun, using an estimated distance of ~3.2 Mpc. Most significantly, we have found no optical companion to this object to very faint limits (mu(B)~ 27 mag arcsec^-2). HIPASS J1712-64 appears to be a binary system similar to, but much less massive than, HI 1225+01 (the Virgo HI Cloud) and has a size of at least 15 kpc. The mean velocity dispersion, measured with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), is only 4 km/s for the main component and because of the weak or non-existent star-formation, possibly reflects the thermal linewidth (T<2000 K) rather than bulk motion or turbulence. The peak column density for HIPASS J1712-64, from the combined Parkes and ATCA data, is only 3.5 x 10^19 cm^-2, which is estimated to be a factor of two below the critical threshold for star formation. Apart from its significantly higher velocity, the properties of HIPASS J1712-64 are similar to the recently recognised class of Compact High Velocity Clouds. We therefore consider the evidence for a Local Group or Galactic origin, although a more plausible alternative is that HIPASS J1712-64 was ejected from the interacting Magellanic Cloud/Galaxy system at perigalacticon ~ 2 x 10^8 yr ago. △ Less

The survey recovers the Puppis cluster and foreground group (Kraan-Korteweg & Huchtmeier 1992), and the Local Void remains empty. The addition of these galaxies to existing extragalactic catalogs allows the connectivity of a… ▽ More The HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey is a 21 cm blind search with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m radiotelescope, looking for galaxies hidden behind the southern Milky Way. The first, shallow (15 mJy rms) phase of the survey has uncovered 107 galaxies, two-thirds of which were previously unknown. The addition of these galaxies to existing extragalactic catalogs allows the connectivity of a very long, thin filament across the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) within 3500 km/s to become evident. No local, hidden, very massive objects were uncovered. With similar results in the north (The Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxies Survey) our census of the most dynamically important HI-rich nearby galaxies is now complete, at least for those objects whose HI profiles are not totally buried in the Galactic HI signal. Tests are being devised to better quantify this remaining ZOA for blind HI searches. Like the Parkes southern hemisphere ZOA survey, the DOGS project is designed to reveal hidden dynamically important nearby galaxies and to help "fill in the blanks" in the loca… ▽ More The Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxies Survey (DOGS) is a 21-cm blind survey for galaxies hidden in the northern "Zone of Avoidance" (ZOA): the portion of the optical extragalactic sky which is obscured by dust in the Milky Way. Like the Parkes southern hemisphere ZOA survey, the DOGS project is designed to reveal hidden dynamically important nearby galaxies and to help "fill in the blanks" in the local large scale structure. To date, 36 galaxies have been detected by the Dwingeloo survey; 23 of these were previously unknown (no corresponding sources recorded in the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED)). Among the interesting detections are 3 nearby galaxies in the vicinity of NGC 6946 and 11 detections in the Supergalactic plane crossing region. New HI-detected Galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance

We present here results of the first three detections to have been im… ▽ More We present the first results of a blind HI survey for galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance with a multibeam receiver on the Parkes telescope. This survey is eventually expected to catalog several thousand galaxies within Galactic latitude |b|<5 degrees, mostly unrecognised before due to Galactic extinction and confusion. We present here results of the first three detections to have been imaged with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The galaxies all lie near Galactic longitude 325 degrees and were selected because of their large angular sizes, up to 1.3 degrees. Linear sizes range from 53 to 108 kpc. The first galaxy is a massive 5.7x10^11 solar mass disk galaxy with a faint optical counterpart, SGC 1511.1--5249. The second is probably an interacting group of galaxies straddling the Galactic equator. No optical identification is possible. The third object appears to be an interacting pair of low column density galaxies, possibly belonging to an extended Circinus or Centaurus A galaxy group. No optical counterpart has been seen despite the predicted extinction (A(B) = 2.7 - 4.4 mag) not being excessive. We discuss the implications of the results, in particular the low HI column densities (~10^19 atoms/sq.cm) found for two of the three galaxies. △ Less

This produces an incomplete knowledge of the distribution of galaxies, and, assuming galaxies trace mass, of the gravity field. Further, just one unrecognized, nearby massive galaxy could have large influence over the Milky Way's motion with respect to the Cosmic Microwave Back… ▽ More Our Galaxy blocks a significant portion of the extragalactic sky from view, hampering studies of large-scale structure. This produces an incomplete knowledge of the distribution of galaxies, and, assuming galaxies trace mass, of the gravity field. Further, just one unrecognized, nearby massive galaxy could have large influence over the Milky Way's motion with respect to the Cosmic Microwave Background. Diligent surveys in the optical and infrared wavebands can find galaxies through moderate Galactic gas and dust, but close to the Galactic Plane, only radio surveys are effective. The entire northern Zone of Avoidance is being searched at 21 cm for galaxies using the Dwingeloo 25-m telescope. A shallow search for nearby, and/or massive galaxies has been completed, yielding five objects. Two of these galaxies were previously unknown, and although they are not likely members of the Local Group, are part of the nearby Universe. A deeper search continues, which will produce a flux-limited catalog of hidden galaxies. This portion of the survey is one-third complete, and has detected about 40 objects to date. Based on present understanding of the HI mass function, the complete survey should uncover 50 - 100 galaxies. △ Less

Gravitational Interactions in Poor Galaxy Groups

Abstract: We report the results of the spatial analysis of deep ROSAT HRI observations, optical imaging and spectroscopy, and high-resolution VLA H I and continuum imaging of NGC 1961 and NGC 2276. These spirals were selected as showing some previous evidence for interaction with a surrounding (hot) diffuse medium. Our results favor most aspects of these galaxies as being shaped by gravitational interacti… ▽ More We report the results of the spatial analysis of deep ROSAT HRI observations, optical imaging and spectroscopy, and high-resolution VLA H I and continuum imaging of NGC 1961 and NGC 2276. These spirals were selected as showing some previous evidence for interaction with a surrounding (hot) diffuse medium. Our results favor most aspects of these galaxies as being shaped by gravitational interactions with companions, rather than the asymmetric pressure from motion through an external medium. The old stars follow the asymmetric structures of young stars and ionized gas, which suggests a tidal origin for the lopsided appearance of these galaxies. In NGC 2276, the H I and star-forming regions are strongly concentrated along the western edge of the disk. In this case, the ROSAT HRI detects the brightest star-forming regions as well as the diffuse disk emission, the most distant galaxy with such a detection. An asymmetric ionization gradient in the H II regions suggests radial movement of gas, which might have occurred in either tidal or wind scenarios. The X-ray emission from NGC 1961 is dominated by a point source near the nucleus of the galaxy but extended emission is seen out to a radius of ~0.8'. Previous studies of the enrichment of the intragroup medium in the NGC 2300 group indicates that strip** may be important in this system, but the density of the IGM is much too tenuous to effectively strip the gas from the galaxy. However, we propose that gravitational interactions in the group environment may enhance strip**. During a gravitational encounter the disk of the spiral galaxy may be warped, making ram pressure strip** more efficient than in a quiescent disk. △ Less

Large-Scale Structures Behind the Southern Milky Way from Observations of Partially Obscured Galaxies

Systematic visual inspection of the ESO/SRC-survey revealed over 10000 previously unknown galaxies in the region 265 < l < 340, |b| < 10. With subsequently obtained redshifts of more than 10% of these galaxies, new structures across the Milky Way are unveiled, suc… ▽ More We report here on extragalactic large-scale structures uncovered by a deep optical survey for galaxies behind the southern Milky Way. Systematic visual inspection of the ESO/SRC-survey revealed over 10000 previously unknown galaxies in the region 265 < l < 340, |b| < 10. With subsequently obtained redshifts of more than 10% of these galaxies, new structures across the Milky Way are unveiled, such as a filament at <v> ~ 2500 km/s connecting to the Hydra and Antlia clusters, a shallow extended supercluster in Vela (~ 6000km/s), and a nearby (4882 km/s), very massive (M ~ 2-5 10^15 Msun), rich Coma-like cluster which seems to constitute the previously unidentified center of the Great Attractor. The innermost part of the Milky Way where the foreground obscuration in the blue is 5mag, respectively HI-column densities greater than 6 10^21 / cm^2 remains fully opaque. In this approximately 8 degrees wide strip, the forthcoming blind HI-survey with the multi-beam system at Parkes will provide the only tool to unveil this part of the extragalactic sky. △ Less

The Fock space for mixed fields is unitarily inequivalent to the Fock space of the unmixed fields in the infinite volume limit.
