We study the unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap** potential starting from a microscopic theory in the limit of large charge and large number of fermion flavors N. In this regime, we present an algorithmic procedure for extracting data from perturbation theory, order-by-order, without the need for other assumptions. We perform a gradient expansion in the interior of the particle cloud, sufficiently far from the cloud edge where the particle density drops rapidly to zero. In this latter region we present the first microscopic computation characterizing the contribution of the edge terms. The microscopic theory reproduces the predictions of the superfluid EFT, including the action, the form of the gap equation, and the energy of the system in a harmonic trap (which maps, via the non-relativistic state-operator correspondence, to the scaling dimension of the lowest operator of charge Q). We additionally give the Wilsonian coefficients at leading order in N up to NNLO in the large-charge expansion.

Here, we examine the structure of conformal dimensions of charge-Q operators in nonrelativistic CFT, in the large-Q regime, from the non-linear sigma model perspective. We discuss in detail the renormalization of edge divergences using dimensional regularization, elucidating the presence of $\log(Q)$ terms in the large-charge expansion. Finally we use dimensional regularization to compute the universal one-loop $Q^0 \log(Q)$ contribution to the ground-state energy in $d = 3$ spatial dimensions, with the result $\left.Δ(Q)\right|_{Q^0} = \frac{1}{3\sqrt{3}} \log(Q) + \text{const.}$

In this note we consider Coulomb-branch chiral primary correlation functions in ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal QCD with gauge group $SU(2)$, in the limit of large R-charge ${\cal J} = 2n$ for the chiral primary operators $[{\cal O}(x)]^ n$ with the inverse gauge coupling $τ$ held fixed. In previous work, these correlation functions were determined to all orders in $n$, up to unknown exponentially small corrections. In this paper we determine the first several orders of the asymptotic expansion of the exponentially small correction itself. To do this we use: the physical interpretation of the exponentially small correction as the virtual propagation of a massive BPS particle, to fix the leading term in the expansion; the supersymmetric recursion relations to derive differential equations for the coupling-dependence of the subleading terms; and the double-scaling limit, to fix undetermined coefficients in the solution of the differential equation. We calculate the expansion of the exponentially small term up to and including relative order $n^{-{5\over 2}}$. We also use the recursion relations to calculate the subleading large-${\cal J}$ corrections to the exponentially small correction in the double-scaling limit, up to and including relative order $n^{-5}$ at fixed double-scaled coupling $λ$. We compare the expansion to exact results from supersymmetric localization at the coupling $τ= {{25}\over π} i$, up to $n=150$. At values $n\sim 100-150$, we find the fixed-coupling and double-scaled large-R-charge expansions are accurate to within one part in $10^ 6$ and $10^ 8$, respectively, of the size of the exponentially small correction itself. Relative to the full correlator including the dominant EFT contribution, these estimates give results accuracte to one part in $10^{15}$ and $10^{17}$, respectively.

We show that the standard notion of entanglement is not defined for gravitationally anomalous two-dimensional theories because they do not admit a local tensor factorization of the Hilbert space into local Hilbert spaces. Qualitatively, the modular flow cannot act consistently and unitarily in a finite region, if there are different numbers of states with a given energy traveling in the two opposite directions. We make this precise by decomposing it into two observations: First, a two-dimensional CFT admits a consistent quantization on a space with boundary only if it is not anomalous. Second, a local tensor factorization always leads to a definition of consistent, unitary, energy-preserving boundary condition. As a corollary we establish a generalization of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem to all two-dimensional unitary local QFTs: No continuum quantum field theory in two dimensions can admit a lattice regulator unless its gravitational anomaly vanishes. We also show that the conclusion can be generalized to six dimensions by dimensional reduction on a four-manifold of nonvanishing signature. We advocate that these points be used to reinterpret the gravitational anomaly quantum-information-theoretically, as a fundamental obstruction to the localization of quantum information.

We consider the large-charge expansion of the charged ground state of a Schrodinger-invariant, nonrelativistic conformal field theory in a harmonic trap, in general dimension d. In the existing literature, the energy in the trap has been computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) at large charge Q, which comes from the classical contribution of two higher-derivative terms in the effective field theory. In this note, we explain the structure of operators localized at the edge of the droplet, where the density drops to zero. We list all operators contributing to the ground-state energy with nonnegative powers of Q in the large-Q expansion. As a test, we use dimensional regularization to reproduce the calculation of the NLO ground state energy by Kravec and Pal , and we recover the same universal coefficient for the logarithmic term as in that work. We refine the derivation by presenting a systematic operator analysis of the possible edge counterterms, showing that different choices of cutoff procedures must yield the same renormalized result up to an enumerable list of Wilson coefficients for conformally invariant local counterterms at the droplet edge. We also demonstrate the existence of a previously unnoticed edge contribution to the ground-state operator dimension of order Q^{{2\over 3} - {1\over d}} in d spatial dimensions. Finally, we show there is no bulk or edge counterterm scaling as Q^0 in two spatial dimensions, which establishes the universality of the order Q^0 term in large-Q expansion of the lowest charged operator dimension in d=2.

As a sequel to previous work, we extend the study of the ground state configuration of the $D=3$, Wilson-Fisher conformal $O(4)$ model. In this work, we prove that for generic ratios of two charge densities, $ρ_1/ρ_2$, the ground-state configuration is inhomogeneous and that the inhomogeneity expresses itself towards longer spatial periods. This is the direct extension of the similar statements we previously made for $ρ_1/ρ_2\ll 1$. We also compute, at fixed set of charges, $ρ_1,\, ρ_2$, the ground state energy and the two-point function(s) associated with this inhomogeneous configuration on the torus. The ground state energy was found to scale $(ρ_1+ρ_2)^{3/2}$, as dictated by dimensional analysis and similarly to the case of the $O(2)$ model.
Unlike the case of the $O(2)$ model, the ground also strongly violates cluster decomposition in the large-volume, fixed-density limit, with a two-point function that is negative definite at antipodal points of the torus at leading order at large charge.

We show these correlators have the universal large-$n$ expansion \[ \log(\mathcal{Y}_n) \simeq \mathcal{J} \mathbf{A} + \mathbf{B} + \log(Γ( \mathcal{J} + α+ 1)) , \] where $\mathcal{J} \equiv 2 n Δ_{\mathcal{O}}$ is the total $R$-charge of $\mathcal{O}_n$, the $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ are theory-dependent coefficients, $α$ is the coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term for the Weyl $a$-anomaly, and the $\simeq$ denotes equality up to terms exponentially small in $\mathcal{J}$. Our methods combine the structure of the Coulomb-branch effective field theory (EFT) with the supersymmetric recursion relations. However, our results constrain the power-law corrections to all orders, even for non-Lagrangian theories to which the recursion relations do not apply. For the case of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SQCD, we also comment on the nature of the exponentially small corrections, which can be calculated to high precision in the double-scaling limit recently discussed by Bourget et al. We show the exponentially small correction is consistent with the interpretation of the EFT breaking down due to the propagation of massive BPS particles over distances of order of the infrared scale $|x - y|$.

In this note we study two point functions of Coulomb branch chiral ring elements with large $R$-charge, in quantum field theories with ${\mathcal N} = 2$ superconformal symmetry in four spacetime dimensions. Focusing on the case of one-dimensional Coulomb branch, we use the effective-field-theoretic methods of arXiv:1706.05743, to estimate the two-point function $${\mathcal Y}_n \equiv |x-y|^{2nΔ_{\mathcal O}}\left<({\mathcal O}(x))^n(\bar{\mathcal O}(y))^n\right>$$ in the limit where the operator insertion On has large total $R$-charge ${\mathcal J} = nΔ_{\mathcal O}$. We show that ${\mathcal Y}_n$ has a nontrivial but universal asymptotic expansion at large ${\mathcal J}$, of the form $${\mathcal Y}_n = {\mathcal J}! \left(\frac{\left| {\mathbf N}_{\mathcal O}\right|}{2π}\right)^{2{\mathcal J}}{\mathcal J}^α{\tilde{\mathcal Y}}_n$$ where ${\mathcal Y}_n$ approaches a constant as $n\to\infty$, and ${\mathbf N}_{\mathcal O}$ is an $n$-independent constant describing on the normalization of the operator relative to the effective Abelian gauge coupling. The exponent $α$ is a positive number proportional to the difference between the $a$-anomaly coefficient of the underlying CFT and that of the effective theory of the Coulomb branch. For Lagrangian SCFT, we check our predictions against exact results from supersymmetric localization of Baggio et. al. and Gerchkovitz et. al., and find precise agreement for the logarithm ${\mathcal B}_n = \log{\mathcal Y}_n$, up to and including order $\log{\mathcal J}$. We also give predictions for the growth of two-point functions in all rank-one SCFT in the classification of Argyres et. al. In this way, we show the large-$R$-charge expansion serves as a bridge from the world of unbroken superconformal symmetry, OPE data, and bootstraps, to the world of the low-energy dynamics of the moduli space of vacua.

We consider the operator spectrum of a three-dimensional ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theory with moduli spaces of one complex dimension, such as the fixed point theory with three chiral superfields $X,Y,Z$ and a superpotential $W = XYZ$. By using the existence of an effective theory on each branch of moduli space, we calculate the anomalous dimensions of certain low-lying operators carrying large $R$-charge $J$. While the lowest primary operator is a BPS scalar primary, the second-lowest scalar primary is in a semi-short representation, with dimension exactly $J+1$, a fact that cannot be seen directly from the $XYZ$ Lagrangian. The third-lowest scalar primary lies in a long multiplet with dimension $J+2 - c_{-3} \, J^{-3} + O(J^{-4})$, where $c_{-3}$ is an unknown positive coefficient. The coefficient $c_{-3}$ is proportional to the leading superconformal interaction term in the effective theory on moduli space. The positivity of $c_{-3}$ does not follow from supersymmetry, but rather from unitarity of moduli scattering and the absence of superluminal signal propagation in the effective dynamics of the complex modulus. We also prove a general lemma, that scalar semi-short representations form a module over the chiral ring in a natural way, by ordinary multiplication of local operators. Combined with the existence of scalar semi-short states at large $J$, this proves the existence of scalar semi-short states at all values of $J$. Thus the combination of ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal symmetry with the large-$J$ expansion is more powerful than the sum of its parts.

Using an effective theory valid on scales longer than the scale defined by the charge density, we show that the ground-state configuration is inhomogeneous for generic ratios $ρ_1 / ρ_2$. This result confirms, within the context of a well-defined effective theory, a recent no-go result of Alvarez-Gaume' et al. We also show that any spatially periodic ground state solutions have an energetic preference towards longer periods, within some range of $ρ_1 / ρ_2$ containing a neighborhood of zero. This suggests that the scale of variation of the ground state solution in finite volume will be the infrared scale, and that the use of the effective theory at large charge in finite volume is self-consistent.

Various universal features of relativistic rotating strings depend on the organization of allowed local operators on the worldsheet. In this paper, we study the set of Neumann boundary operators in effective string theory, which are relevant for the controlled study of open relativistic strings with freely moving endpoints. Relativistic open strings are thought to encode the dynamics of confined quark-antiquark pairs in gauge theories in the planar approximation. Neumann boundary operators can be organized by their behavior under scaling of the target space coordinates X, and the set of allowed X-scaling exponents is bounded above by +1/2 and unbounded below. Negative contributions to X-scalings come from powers of a single invariant, or "dressing" operator, which is bilinear in the embedding coordinates. In particular, we show that all Neumann boundary operators are dressed by quarter-integer powers of this invariant, and we demonstrate how this rule arises from various ways of regulating the short-distance singularities of the effective theory.

We calculate the anomalous dimensions of operators with large global charge $J$ in certain strongly coupled conformal field theories in three dimensions, such as the O(2) model and the supersymmetric fixed point with a single chiral superfield and a $W = Φ^3$ superpotential. Working in a $1/J$ expansion, we find that the large-$J$ sector of both examples is controlled by a conformally invariant effective Lagrangian for a Goldstone boson of the global symmetry. For both these theories, we find that the lowest state with charge $J$ is always a scalar operator whose dimension $Δ_J$ satisfies the sum rule $ J^2 Δ_J - \left( \tfrac{J^2}{2} + \tfrac{J}{4} + \tfrac{3}{16} \right) Δ_{J-1} - \left( \tfrac{J^2}{2} - \tfrac{J}{4} + \tfrac{3}{16} \right) Δ_{J+1} = 0.035147 $ up to corrections that vanish at large $J$. The spectrum of low-lying excited states is also calculable explcitly: For example, the second-lowest primary operator has spin two and dimension $Δ\ll J + \sqrt{3}$. In the supersymmetric case, the dimensions of all half-integer-spin operators lie above the dimensions of the integer-spin operators by a gap of order $J^{1/2}$. The propagation speeds of the Goldstone waves and heavy fermions are $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}$ and $\pm \frac{1}{2}$ times the speed of light, respectively. These values, including the negative one, are necessary for the consistent realization of the superconformal symmetry at large $J$.

We present a common solution to the puzzles of the light Higgs or quark masses and the need for a shift symmetry and large field values in high scale chaotic inflation. One way to protect, for example, the Higgs from a large supersymmetric mass term is if it is the Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) of a nonlinear sigma model. However, it is well known that nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) with nontrivial Kähler transformations are problematic to couple to supergravity. An additional field is necessary to make the Kähler potential of the NLSM invariant in supergravity. This field must have a shift symmetry --- making it a candidate for the inflaton (or axion). We give an explicit example of such a model for the coset space $SU(3)/SU(2) \times U(1)$, with the Higgs as the NGB, including breaking the inflaton's shift symmetry and producing a chaotic inflation potential. This construction can also be applied to other models, such as one based on $E_7/SO(10) \times U(1) \times U(1)$ which incorporates the first two generations of (light) quarks as the Nambu-Goldstone multiplets, and has an axion in addition to the inflaton. Along the way we clarify and connect previous work on understanding NLSMs in supergravity and the origin of the extra field (which is the inflaton here), including a connection to Witten-Bagger quantization. This framework has wide applications to model building; a light particle from a NLSM requires, in supergravity, exactly the structure for chaotic inflaton or an axion.

We investigate charge quantization in the Standard Model (SM) through a $\mathbb{CP}^2$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM), $SU(3)_G/(SU(2)_H \times U(1)_H)$, and a $\mathbb{CP}^3$ model, $SU(4)_G/(SU(3)_H \times U(1)_H)$. We also generalize to any $\mathbb{CP}^k$ model. Charge quantization follows from the consistency and dynamics of the NLSM, without a monopole or Grand Unified Theory, as shown in our earlier work on the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ model (arXiv:1309.0692). We find that representations of the matter fields under the unbroken non-abelian subgroup dictate their charge quantization under the $U(1)_H$ factor. In the $\mathbb{CP}^2$ model the unbroken group is identified with the weak and hypercharge groups of the SM, and the Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) has the quantum numbers of a SM Higgs. There is the intriguing possibility of a connection with the vanishing of the Higgs self-coupling at the Planck scale. Interestingly, with some minor assumptions (no vector-like matter and minimal representations) and starting with a single quark doublet, anomaly cancellation requires the matter structure of a generation in the SM. Similar analysis holds in the $\mathbb{CP}^3$ model, with the unbroken group identified with QCD and hypercharge, and the NGB having the up quark as a partner in a supersymmetric model. This can motivate solving the strong CP problem with a vanishing up quark mass.

Using the Polchinski-Strominger effective string theory in covariant gauge, we compute the mass of a rotating string in D dimensions with large angular momenta J, in one or two planes, in fixed ratio, up to and including first subleading order in the large J expansion. This constitutes a first-principles calculation of the value for the order $J^0$ contribution to the mass-squared of a meson on the leading Regge trajectory in planar QCD with bosonic quarks. For open strings with Neumann boundary conditions, and for closed strings in $D\geq 5$, the order $J^0$ term in the mass-squared is exactly calculated by the semiclassical approximation. This term in the expansion is universal and independent of the details of the theory, assuming only D-dimensional Poincare invariance and the absence of other infinite-range excitations on the string worldvolume, beyond the Nambu-Goldstone bosons.

We investigate the consistency conditions for matter fields coupled to the four-dimensional (${\cal N} = 1$ supersymmetric) $\mathbb{CP}(1)$ nonlinear sigma model (the coset space $SU(2)_G/U(1)_H$). We find that consistency requires that the $U(1)_H$ charge of the matter be quantized, in units of half of the $U(1)_H$ charge of the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson, if the matter has a nonsingular kinetic term and the dynamics respect the full group $SU(2)_G$. We can then take the linearly realized group $U(1)_H$ to comprise the weak hypercharge group $U(1)_Y$ of the Standard Model. Thus we have charge quantization without a Grand Unified Theory (GUT), completely avoiding problems like proton decay, doublet-triplet splitting, and magnetic monopoles. We briefly investigate the phenomenological implications of this model-building framework. The NG boson is fractionally charged and completely stable. It can be naturally light, avoiding constraints while being a component of dark matter or having applications in nuclear physics. We also comment on the extension to other NLSMs on coset spaces, which will be explored more fully in a followup paper.

The dS/CFT proposal of Anninos, Hartman, and Strominger relates quantum Vasiliev gravity in dS_4 to a large N vector theory in three dimensions. We use this proposal to compute the Wheeler-de Witt wave function of a universe having a particular topology at future infinity. This amplitude is found to grow rapidly with the topological complexity of the spatial slice; this is due to the plethora of states of the Chern-Simons theory that is needed to impose the singlet constraint. Various mechanisms are considered which might ameliorate this growth, but none seems completely satisfactory. We also study the topology dependence in Einstein gravity by computing the action of complex instantons; the wave function then depends on a choice of contour through the space of metrics. The most natural contour prescription leads to a growth with genus similar to the one found in Vasiliev theory, albeit with a different power of Newton's constant.

Via a chain of dualities, we connect the Omega-deformed SYM to a new four-dimensional gauge theory which we refer to as the reciprocal gauge theory. This theory has several properties in common with Liouville field theory, such as its gauge coupling b^2 =ε_2 / ε_1, and its behavior under S-duality. Finally, we realize the BPS states on the SYM side of the AGT correspondence and follow them along the chain of dualities.
In the fluxtrap frame, we are dealing with two distinct types of states localized in different radial positions, while in the reciprocal frame, we find single states carrying both charges localized in one place which appear to be perturbatively stable. Our microscopic picture of the small-b limit exhibits semiclassically BPS bound states, which are not visible at the level of the partition function.

We find no phase transition at temperatures of order one; the usual Hawking-Page phase transition is removed by the highly degenerate light states associated with conical defect states in the bulk. Three dimensional Chern-Simons-matter CFTs with vector-like matter are considered on T^3, where the dynamics is described by an effective theory for the eigenvalues of the holonomies. Likewise, we find no evidence for a Hawking-Page phase transition at large level k.

On the spatial torus T^2, we find light states at small `t Hooft coupling λ=N/k, where k is the Chern-Simons level, taken to be large. In the free scalar theory the gaps are of order \sqrt λ/N and in the critical scalar theory and the free fermion theory they are of order λ/N. The entropy of these states grows like N Log(k). We briefly consider spatial surfaces of higher genus. Based on results from pure Chern-Simons theory, it appears that there are light states with entropy that grows even faster, like N^2 Log(k). This is consistent with the log of the partition function on the three sphere S^3, which also behaves like N^2 Log(k). These light states require bulk dynamics beyond standard Vasiliev higher spin gravity to explain them.

Our solution gives an explicit description of the geometry in the core of Nekrasov and Witten's realization of the instanton partition function, far from the asymptotic region of their background. This construction lifts naturally to M-theory and corresponds to an M5-brane wrapped on a Riemann surface with a selfdual flux. Via a 9-11 flip, we finally reinterpret the Omega deformation in terms of non-commutative geometry. Our solution generates all modified couplings of the Ω-deformed gauge theory, and also yields a geometric origin for the quantum spectral curve of the associated quantum integrable system.

In this article, we construct a supersymmetric real mass deformation for the adjoint chiral multiplets in the gauge theory describing the dynamics of a stack of D2-branes in type II string theory. We do so by placing the D2-branes into the T-dual of a supersymmetric NS fluxbrane background. We furthermore note that this background is the string theoretic realization of an Omega-deformation of flat space in the directions transverse to the branes where the deformation parameters satisfy ε_1 = - ε_2. This Ω-deformation therefore serves to give supersymmetric real masses to the chiral multiplets of the 3D gauge theory. To illustrate the physical effect of the real mass term, we derive BPS-saturated classical solutions for the branes rotating in this background. Finally, we reproduce all the same structure in the presence of NS fivebranes and comment on the relationship to the gauge theory/spin-chain correspondence of Nekrasov and Shatashvili.

Nonlinear sigma models with altered nonperturbative sectors are the same as nonlinear sigma models on special stacks known as gerbes. After reviewing the existing results on such theories in two dimensions, we discuss examples of gerby moduli `spaces' appearing in four-dimensional field theory and string compactifications, and the effect of various dualities. We discuss global topological defects arising when a field or string theory moduli space has a gerbe structure. We also outline how to generalize results of Bagger-Witten and more recent authors on quantization issues in supergravities from smooth manifolds to smooth moduli stacks, focusing particular attention on stacks that have gerbe structures.

The regions are connected by expanding "domain walls" but are not separated by causal horizons, and physical excitations can propagate between them. As specific examples we construct solutions that interpolate between oriented and unoriented string theories, and also between type II and heterotic theories. In this note we explore the application of modular invariance in 2-dimensional CFT to derive universal bounds for quantities describing certain state degeneracies, such as the thermodynamic entropy, or the number of marginal operators. We show that the entropy at inverse temperature 2 pi satisfies a universal lower bound, and we enumerate the principal obstacles to deriving upper bounds on entropies or quantum mechanical degeneracies for fully general CFTs. We then restrict our attention to infrared stable CFT with moderately low central charge, in addition to the usual assumptions of modular invariance, unitarity and discrete operator spectrum. For CFT in the range c_left + c_right < 48 with no relevant operators, we are able to prove an upper bound on the thermodynamic entropy at inverse temperature 2 pi. Under the same conditions we also prove that a CFT can have a number of marginal deformations no greater than ((c_left + c_right) / (48 - c_left - c_right)) e^(4 Pi) - 2.

We prove that every unitary two-dimensional conformal field theory (with no extended chiral algebra, and with central charges c_L, c_R > 1) contains a primary operator with dimension Delta_1 that satisfies 0 < Delta_1 < (c_L + c_R)/12 + 0.473695. Translated into gravitational language using the AdS_3 /CFT_2 dictionary, our result proves rigorously that the lightest massive excitation in any theory of 3D gravity with cosmological constant Lambda < 0 can be no heavier than 1/(4 G_N) + o(|Lambda|^(1/2)). In the flat-space approximation, this limiting mass is twice that of the lightest BTZ black hole. The derivation of the bound applies at finite central charge for the CFT, and does not rely on an asymptotic expansion at large central charge. Neither does our proof rely on any special property of the CFT such as supersymmetry or holomorphic factorization, nor on any bulk interpretation in terms of string theory or semiclassical gravity. Our only assumptions are unitarity and modular invariance of the dual CFT. Our proof demonstrates for the first time that there exists a universal center-of-mass energy beyond which a theory of "pure" quantum gravity can never consistently be extended.

We use open string field theory to study the dynamics of unstable branes in the bosonic string theory, in the background of a generic linear dilaton. We find a simple exact solution describing a dynamical interpolation between the perturbative vacuum and the recently discovered nonperturbative tachyon vacuum. In our solution, the open string tachyon increases exponentially along a null direction, after which nonlinearities set in and cause the solution to asymptote to a static state. In particular, the wild oscillations of the open string fields which plague the time-like rolling tachyon solution are entirely absent. Our model thus represents the first example proving that the true tachyon vacuum of open string field theory can be realized as the endpoint of a dynamical transition from the perturbative vacuum.

Examples of gauged linear sigma models with non-birational Kahler phases are a relatively new phenomenon. Most of our examples involve gauged linear sigma models for complete intersections of quadric hypersurfaces, though we also discuss some more general cases and their interpretation. We also propose a more general understanding of the relationship between Kahler phases of gauged linear sigma models, namely that they are related by (and realize) Kuznetsov's `homological projective duality.' Along the way, we shall see how `noncommutative spaces' (in Kontsevich's sense) are realized physically in gauged linear sigma models, providing examples of new types of conformal field theories. Throughout, the physical realization of stacks plays a key role in interpreting physical structures appearing in GLSMs, and we find that stacks are implicitly much more common in GLSMs than previously realized.

Superstring theories in the critical dimension D=10 are connected to one another by a well-explored web of dualities. In this paper we use closed-string tachyon condensation to connect the supersymmetric moduli space of the critical superstring to non-supersymmetric string theories in more than ten dimensions. We present a new set of classical solutions that exhibit dynamical transitions between string theories in different dimensions, with different degrees of stability and different amounts of spacetime supersymmetry. In all examples, the string-frame metric and dilaton gradient readjust themselves during the transition. The central charge of the worldsheet theory remains equal to 15, even as the total number of dimensions changes. This phenomenon arises entirely from a one-loop diagram on the string worldsheet. Allowed supersymmetric final states include half-BPS vacua of type II and SO(32) heterotic string theory. We also find solutions that bypass the critical dimension altogether and proceed directly to spacelike linear dilaton theories in dimensions greater than or equal to two.

The tree-level potential of the string theory produces an equation of state at the threshold between accelerating and decelerating cosmologies, and the resulting spacetime is globally conformally equivalent to Minkowski space. We demonstrate that exact solutions exist with a condensate of the closed-string tachyon, the simplest of which is a Liouville wall moving at the speed of light. We rely on the existence of this solution to derive constraints on the couplings of the tachyon to the dilaton and metric in the string theory effective action. We examine the M-theory version of SQCD which is known as MQCD. In the IIA limit, this theory appears to have a supersymmetry-breaking brane configuration which corresponds to the meta-stable state of N=1 SU(Nc) SQCD. However, the behavior at infinity of this non-supersymmetric brane construction differs from that of the supersymmetric ground state of MQCD. We interpret this to mean that it is not a meta-stable state in MQCD, but rather a state in another theory. This provides a concrete example of the fact that, while MQCD accurately describes the supersymmetric features of SCQD, it fails to reproduce its non-supersymmetric features (such as meta-stable states) not only quantitatively but also qualitatively.

Abstract:
In this paper we study CFT's associated to gerbes. These theories suffer from a lack of cluster decomposition, but this problem can be resolved: the CFT's are the same as CFT's for disconnected targets. Such theories also lack cluster decomposition, but in that form, the lack is manifestly not very problematic. In particular, we shall see that this matching of CFT's, this duality between noneffe…

In particular, we shall see that this matching of CFT's, this duality between noneffective gaugings and sigma models on disconnected targets, is a worldsheet duality related to T-duality. We perform a wide variety of tests of this claim, ranging from checking partition functions at arbitrary genus to D-branes to mirror symmetry. We also discuss a number of applications of these results, including predictions for quantum cohomology and Gromov-Witten theory and additional physical understanding of the geometric Langlands program.

We resolve a puzzle in the theory of strings propagating on locally flat spacetimes with nontrivial Wilson lines for stringy Z_N gauge symmetries. We find that strings probing such backgrounds are described by consistent worldsheet CFTs. The level mismatch in the twisted sectors is compensated by adjusting the quantization of momentum of strings winding around the Wilson line direction in units of 1/(N^2 R) rather than 1/(N R), as might have been classically expected. We demonstrate in various examples how this improvement of the naive orbifold prescription leads to satisfaction of general physical principles such as level matching and closure of the OPE. Applying our techniques to construct a Wilson line for T-duality of a torus in the type II string (``T-fold''), we find a new 7D solution with N=1 SUSY where the moduli of the fiber torus are fixed. When the size of the base becomes small this simple monodrofold exhibits enhanced gauge symmetry and a self-T-duality on the S^1 base.

New Type II String Theories with Sixteen Supercharges

Abstract:
We present two new backgrounds of type IIA string theory preserving 16 supercharges. The Wilson line theory has many new phenomena, including a self-duality of type IIA on a single circle, enhanced gauge symmetry at the self-dual radius, and a T-duality between uncharged and (locally) charged branes. The orbifold theory also presents many novel features, including charged, stable non-BPS D1, D3, and D5-branes pinned to the fixed locus, and an instability of the D0-brane near the fixed locus.

We evaluate the problem of galaxy formation in the landscape approach to phenomenology of the axion sector. With other parameters of standard LambdaCDM cosmology held fixed, the density of cold dark matter is bounded below relative to the density of baryonic matter by the requirement that structure should form before the era of cosmological constant domination of the universe. Galaxies comparable to the Milky Way can only form if the ratio also satisfies an upper bound. The resulting constraint on the density of dark matter is too loose to select a low axion decay constant or small initial displacement angle on anthropic grounds.

We study tree-level solutions to heterotic string theory in which the number of spacetime dimensions 10+n changes dynamically due to closed string tachyon condensation. Taking the large-n limit, we compute the amount by which the dilaton gradient changes during the condensation process. At leading order in n we find that the change in the invariant magnitude of the dilaton gradient compensates the change in spacelike central charge on the worldsheet, so that the total worldsheet central charges are equal at early and late times. This result supports our interpretation of the worldsheet theory as a CFT of critical central charge which describes a dynamical reduction in the total number of spacetime dimensions.

The Kaluza-Klein modes of the supercritical dimensions are dual to non-singlet bound states of open strings.

We study string theory in supersymmetric time-dependent backgrounds. In the framework of general relativity, supersymmetry for spacetimes without flux implies the existence of a covariantly constant null vector, and a relatively simple form of the metric. As a result, the local nature of any such spacetime can be easily understood. We show that we can view any such geometry as a sequence of solutions to lower-dimensional Euclidean gravity. If we choose the lower-dimensional solutions to degenerate at some light-cone time, we obtain null singularities, which may be thought of as generalizations of the parabolic orbifold singularity. We find that in string theory, many such null singularities get repaired by $α'$-corrections - in particular, by worldsheet instantons. As a consequence, the resulting string theory solutions do not suffer from any instability. Even though the CFT description of these solutions is not always valid, they can still be well understood after taking the effects of light D-branes into account; the breakdown of the worldsheet conformal field theory is purely gauge-theoretic, not involving strong gravitational effects.

The idea is to augment the class of vacua which can be described as fibrations by enlarging the monodromy group around the singular fibers to include perturbative stringy duality symmetries. As a controlled laboratory for testing this program, we study in detail six-dimensional (1,0) supersymmetric vacua arising from two-torus fibrations over a two-dimensional base. We also construct some examples of two-torus fibrations over four-dimensional bases, and comment on the extension to other fibrations.
