In this paper we show for every sufficiently large integer $g$ the existence of a complete family of closed and embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces deforming the Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ parametrized by their conformal type. When specializing to the minimal case, we discover a pattern resulting in the coefficients of the involved expansions being alternating multiple zeta values (MZVs), which generalizes the notion of Riemann's zeta values to multiple integer variables. This allows us to extend a new existence proof of the Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ for all to all $g\geq 3$ using complex analytic methods and to give closed form expressions of their area expansion up to order $7$. For example, the third order coefficient is $\tfrac{9}{4}ζ(3)$ (the first and second order term were shown to be $\log(2)$ and $0$ respectively in \cite{HHT}). As a corollary, we obtain that the area of $ξ_{1,g}$ is monotonically increasing in their genus $g$ for all $g\geq 0.$

First we survey and explain the strategy of some recent results that construct holomorphic $\text{sl}(2, \mathbb C)$-differential systems over some Riemann surfaces $Σ_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$, satisfying the condition that the image of the associated monodromy homomorphism is (real) Fuchsian \cite{BDHH} or some cocompact Kleinian subgroup $$Γ\subset \text{SL}(2, \mathbb C)$$ as in \cite{BDHH2}. As a consequence, there exist holomorphic maps from $Σ_g$ to the quotient space $\text{SL}(2, \mathbb C)/ Γ$, where $Γ\subset \text{SL}(2, \mathbb C)$ is a cocompact lattice, that do not factor through any elliptic curve \cite{BDHH2}. This answers positively a question of Ghys in \cite{Gh}; the question was also raised by Huckleberry and Winkelmann in \cite{HW}.
Then we prove that when $M$ is a Riemann surface, a Torelli type theorem holds for the affine group scheme over $\mathbb C$ obtained from the category of holomorphic connections on {\it étale trivial} holomorphic bundles.
After that, we explain how to compute in a simple way the holonomy of a holomorphic connection on a free vector bundle.
Finally, for a compact Kähler manifold $M$, we investigate the neutral Tannakian category given by the holomorphic connections on étale trivial holomorphic bundles over $M$. If $\varpi$ (respectively, $Θ$) stands for the affine group scheme over $\mathbb C$ obtained from the category of connections (respectively, connections on free (trivial) vector bundles), then the natural inclusion produces a morphism $v:{\mathcal O}(Θ)\longrightarrow {\mathcal O}(\varpi)$ of Hopf algebras. We present a description of the transpose of $v$ in terms of the iterated integrals.

With the principal objective of demonstrating mature, large-scale, REBCO magnets, the project was executed jointly by the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) and Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). The TFMC achieved its programmatic goal of experimentally demonstrating a large-scale high-field REBCO magnet, achieving 20.1 T peak field-on-conductor with 40.5 kA of terminal current, 815 kN/m of Lorentz loading on the REBCO stacks, and almost 1 GPa of mechanical stress accommodated by the structural case. Fifteen internal demountable pancake-to-pancake joints operated in the 0.5 to 2.0 nOhm range at 20 K and in magnetic fields up to 12 T. The DC and AC electromagnetic performance of the magnet, predicted by new advances in high-fidelity computational models, was confirmed in two test campaigns while the massively parallel, single-pass, pressure-vessel style coolant scheme capable of large heat removal was validated. The REBCO current lead and feeder system was experimentally qualified up to 50 kA, and the crycooler based cryogenic system provided 600 W of cooling power at 20 K with mass flow rates up to 70 g/s at a maximum design pressure of 20 bar-a for the test campaigns. Finally, the feasibility of using passive, self-protection against a quench in a fusion-scale NI TF coil was experimentally assessed with an intentional open-circuit quench at 31.5 kA terminal current.

Parabolic SL(r,C)-opers were defined and investigated in [BDP] in the set-up of vector bundles on curves with a parabolic structure over a divisor. Here we introduce and study holomorphic differential operators between parabolic vector bundles over curves. We consider the parabolic SL(r,C)-opers on a Riemann surface X with given singular divisor S and with fixed parabolic weights satisfying the condition that all parabolic weights at any point $x_i$ in S are integral multiples of $\frac{1}{2N_i+1}$, where $N_i > 1$ are fixed integers. We prove that this space of opers is canonically identified with the affine space of holomorphic differential operators of order r between two natural parabolic line bundles on X (depending only on the divisor S and the weights $N_i$) satisfying the conditions that the principal symbol of the differential operators is the constant function 1 and the sub-principal symbol vanishes identically. The vanishing of the sub-principal symbol ensures that the logarithmic connection on the rank r bundle is actually a logarithmic SL(r, C)-connection.

The non-abelian Hodge correspondence is a real analytic map between the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles and the deRham moduli space of irreducible flat connections mediated by solutions of the self-duality equation. In this paper we construct such solutions for strongly parabolic $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$ Higgs fields on a $4$-punctured sphere with parabolic weights $t \sim 0$ using loop groups methods through an implicit function theorem argument at the trivial connection for $t=0.$ We identify the rescaled limit hyper-Kähler moduli space at the singular point at $t=0$ to be the completion of the nilpotent orbit in $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)$ modulo a $\mathbb Z_2\times\mathbb Z_2$ action equipped the Eguchi-Hanson metric. Our methods and computations are based on the twistor approach to the self-duality equations using Deligne and Simpson's $λ$-connections interpretation. Due to the implicit function theorem, Taylor expansions of these quantities can be computed at $t=0$. By construction they have closed form expressions in terms of multiple polylogarithms and their geometric properties lead to some identities of $Ω$-values which we believe deserve further investigations.

In this paper we combine the existence and regularity of the Plateau solution $f_t$ in $t \in (0, \tfrac{1}{4})$ with topological information about the moduli space of Fuchsian systems on the 4-puncture sphere to obtain existence of a Fuchsian DPW potential $η_t$ for every $f_t$ with $t\in(0, \tfrac{1}{4}]$. Moreover, the coefficients of $η_t$ are shown to depend real analytically on $t$. This implies that the Taylor approximation of the DPW potential $η_t$ and of the area obtained at $t=0$ found in \cite{HHT2} determines these quantities for all $ξ_{1,g}$. In particular, this leads to an algorithm to conformally parametrize all Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$.

We study the monodromy map for logarithmic $\mathfrak g$-differential systems over an oriented surface $S_0$ of genus $g$, with $\mathfrak g$ being the Lie algebra of a complex reductive affine algebraic group $G$. These logarithmic $\mathfrak g$-differential systems are triples of the form $(X, D,Φ)$, where $(X, D) \in {\mathcal T}_{g,d}$ is an element of the Teichmüller space of complex structures on $S_0$ with $d \geq 1$ ordered marked points $D\subset S_0= X$ and $Φ$ is a logarithmic connection on the trivial holomorphic principal $G$-bundle $X \times G$ over $X$ whose polar part is contained in the divisor $D$. We prove that the monodromy map from the space of logarithmic $\mathfrak g$-differential systems to the character variety of $G$-representations of the fundamental group of $S_0\setminus D$ is an immersion at the generic point, in the following two cases:
A) $g \geq 2$, $d \geq 1$, and $\dim_{\mathbb C}G \geq d+2$;
B) $g=1$ and $\dim_{\mathbb C}G \geq d$.
The above monodromy map is nowhere an immersion in the following two cases:
1) $g=0$ and $d \geq 4$;
2) $g\geq 1$ and $\dim_{\mathbb C}G < \frac{d+3g-3}{g}$.
This extends to the logarithmic case the main results in \cite{CDHL}, \cite{BD} dealing with nonsingular holomorphic $\mathfrak g$-differential systems (which corresponds to the case of $d\,=\,0$).

To construct these we use an implicit function theorem argument in the parameter $t= \tfrac{1}{2(g+1)}$. This allows us to give an iterative algorithm to compute the power series expansion of the DPW potential and area of $f_\varphi^g$ at $t= 0$ explicitly. In particular, we obtain for large genus Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ % due to the real analytic dependence of its area and DPW potential on $t,$ a scheme to explicitly compute the coefficients of the power series in $t$ in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Vanadium dioxide undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) from an insulating (monoclinic) to a metallic (tetragonal) phase close to room temperature, which makes it a promising functional material for many applications, e.g. as chemical sensors. Not much is known about its surface and interface properties, although these are critical in many of its applications. This work presents an atomic-scale investigation of the tetragonal rutile VO$_2$(110)$_\text{T}$ single-crystal surface and reports results obtained with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), supported by density-functional theory-based (DFT) calculations. The surface reconstructs into an oxygen-rich (2$\times$2) superstructure that coexists with small patches of the underlying, unreconstructed (110)-(1$\times$1) surface. The best structural model for the (2$\times$2) surface termination, conceptually derived from a vanadium pentoxide (001) monolayer, consists of rings of corner-shared tetrahedra. Over a wide range of oxygen chemical potentials this reconstruction is more stable than the unreconstructed (110) surface as well as models proposed in the literature.

Group 15 elements in zero oxidation state (P, As, Sb and Bi), also called pnictogens, are rarely used in catalysis due to the difficulties associated in preparing well-structured and stable materials. Here, we report on the synthesis of highly exfoliated, few layer 2D phosphorene and antimonene in zero oxidation state, suspended in an ionic liquid, with the native atoms ready to interact with external reagents while avoiding aerobic or aqueous decomposition pathways, and on their use as efficient catalysts for the alkylation of nucleophiles with esters. The few layer pnictogen material circumvents the extremely harsh reaction conditions associated to previous superacid-catalyzed alkylations, by enabling an alternative mechanism on surface, protected from the water and air by the ionic liquid. These 2D catalysts allow the alkylation of a variety of acid-sensitive organic molecules and giving synthetic relevancy to the use of simple esters as alkylating agents.

We study a natural functional on the space of holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of a compact Riemann surface, generalizing the energy of equivariant harmonic maps corresponding to twistor lines. We give a link to a natural meromorphic connection on the hyperholomorphic line bundle recently constructed by Hitchin. Moreover, we prove that for a certain class of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space, the functional is basically given by the Willmore energy of corresponding (equivariant) conformal map to the 3-sphere. As an application we use the functional to distinguish new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space from the space of twistor lines.

Implantable, closed-loop devices for automated early detection and stimulation of epileptic seizures are promising treatment options for patients with severe epilepsy that cannot be treated with traditional means. Most approaches for early seizure detection in the literature are, however, not optimized for implementation on ultra-low power microcontrollers required for long-term implantation. In this paper we present a convolutional neural network for the early detection of seizures from intracranial EEG signals, designed specifically for this purpose. In addition, we investigate approximations to comply with hardware limits while preserving accuracy. We compare our approach to three previously proposed convolutional neural networks and a feature-based SVM classifier with respect to detection accuracy, latency and computational needs. Evaluation is based on a comprehensive database with long-term EEG recordings. The proposed method outperforms the other detectors with a median sensitivity of 0.96, false detection rate of 10.1 per hour and median detection delay of 3.7 seconds, while being the only approach suited to be realized on a low power microcontroller due to its parsimonious use of computational and memory resources.

The boost of available digital media has led to a significant increase in derivative work. With tools for manipulating objects becoming more and more mature, it can be very difficult to determine whether one piece of media was derived from another one or tampered with. As derivations can be done with malicious intent, there is an urgent need for reliable and easily usable tampering detection methods. However, even media considered semantically untampered by humans might have already undergone compression steps or light post-processing, making automated detection of tampering susceptible to false positives. In this paper, we present the PS-Battles dataset which is gathered from a large community of image manipulation enthusiasts and provides a basis for media derivation and manipulation detection in the visual domain. The dataset consists of 102'028 images grouped into 11'142 subsets, each containing the original image as well as a varying number of manipulated derivatives.

Solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations corresponds to special real sections in the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space -- twistor lines. A question posed by Simpson in 1997 asks whether all real sections give rise to global solutions of the self-duality equations. An affirmative answer would allow for complex analytic procedure to obtain all solutions of the self-duality equations. The purpose of this paper is to construct counter examples given by certain (branched) Willmore surfaces in $3$-space (with monodromy) via the generalized Whitham flow. Though these higher solutions do not give rise to global solutions of the self-duality equations on the whole Riemann surface $M$, they are solutions on an open dense subset of it. This suggest a deeper connection between Willmore surfaces, i.e., rank $4$ harmonic maps theory, with the rank $2$ self-duality theory.

It is known that ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ is the twistor space for the hyper-Kähler structure on the moduli space of rank one holomorphic connections on $X$. We investigate the group $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ of all holomorphic automorphisms of ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$. The connected component of $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ containing the identity automorphism is computed. There is a natural element of $H^2({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}, {\mathbb Z})$. We also compute the subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ that fixes this second cohomology class. Since ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ admits an ample rational curve, the notion of algebraic dimension extends to it by a theorem of Verbitsky. We prove that ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ is Moishezon.

Constant mean curvature surfaces in $S^3$ can be studied via their associated family of flat connections. In the case of tori this approach has led to a deep understanding of the moduli space of all CMC tori. For compact CMC surfaces of higher genus the theory is far more involved due to the non abelian nature of their fundamental group. In this paper we extend the spectral curve theory for tori developed in \cite{Hi, PiSt} and for genus $2$ surfaces \cite{He3} to CMC surfaces in $S^3$ of genus $g=k\cdot l$ with commuting $\mathbb Z_{k+1}$ and $\mathbb Z_{l+1}$ symmetries. We determine their associated family of flat connections via certain flat line bundle connections parametrized by the spectral curve. We generalize the flow on spectral data introduced in \cite{HeHeSch} and prove the short time existence of this flow for certain families of initial surfaces. In this way we obtain various families of new CMC surfaces of higher genus with prescribed branch points and prescribed umbilics.

Minimal and CMC surfaces in $S^3$ can be treated via their associated family of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections. In this the paper we parametrize the moduli space of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections on the Lawson minimal surface of genus 2 which are equivariant with respect to certain symmetries of Lawson's geometric construction. The parametrization uses Hitchin's abelianization procedure to write such connections explicitly in terms of flat line bundles on a complex 1-dimensional torus. This description is used to develop a spectral curve theory for the Lawson surface. This theory applies as well to other CMC and minimal surfaces with the same holomorphic symmetries as the Lawson surface but different Riemann surface structure. Additionally, we study the space of isospectral deformations of compact minimal surface of genus $g\geq2$ and prove that it is generated by simple factor dressing.

Black holes are extremely dense and compact objects from which light cannot escape. There is an overall consensus that black holes exist and many astronomical objects are identified with black holes. White holes were understood as the exact time reversal of black holes, therefore they should continuously throw away material. It is accepted, however, that a persistent ejection of mass leads to gravitational pressure, the formation of a black hole and thus to the "death of while holes". So far, no astronomical source has been successfully tagged a white hole. The only known white hole is the Big Bang which was instantaneous rather than continuous or long-lasting. We thus suggest that the emergence of a white hole, which we name a 'Small Bang', is spontaneous - all the matter is ejected at a single pulse. Unlike black holes, white holes cannot be continuously observed rather their effect can only be detected around the event itself. Gamma ray bursts are the most energetic explosions in the universe. Long gamma-ray bursts were connected with supernova eruptions. There is a new group of gamma-ray bursts, which are relatively close to Earth, but surprisingly lack any supernova emission. We propose identifying these bursts with white holes. White holes seem like the best explanation of gamma-ray bursts that appear in voids. We also predict the detection of rare gigantic gamma-ray bursts with energies much higher than typically observed.

We present a novel quantum stochastic evolution equation for a matter field describing the canonical state of a weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas. In the ideal gas limit our approach is exact. This numerically very stable equation suppresses high-energy fluctuations exponentially, which enables us to describe condensed and thermal atoms within the same formalism. We present applications to ground state occupation and fluctuations, density profile of ground state and thermal cloud, and ground state number statistics. Our main aim are spatial coherence properties which we investigate through the determination of interference contrast and spatial density correlations. Parameters are taken from actual experiments [1].
