New dimensional estimates for subvarieties of linear algebraic groups
Abstract: For every connected, almost simple linear algebraic group $G\leq\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ over a large enough field $K$, every subvariety $V\subseteq G$, and every finite generating set $A\subseteq G(K)$, we prove a general dimensional bound, that is, a bound of the form \[|A\cap V(\overline{K})|\leq C_{1}|A^{C_{2}}|^{\frac{\dim(V)}{\dim(G)}}\] with $C_{1},C_{2}$ depending only on $n,\mathrm{deg}(V)$. Abstract: We study the two-parameter quadratic sieve for a general test function. This improves on previous bounds. Our second objective is to contribute to an ongoing discussion on how to find a non-sofic group. In particular, we show that, if the Higman gr… ▽ More

Power-free values, large deviations, and integer points on irrational curves
Abstract: Let $f\in \mathbb{Z}\lbrack x\rbrack$ be a polynomial of degree $d\geq 3$ without roots of multiplicity $d$ or $(d-1)$. Erdős conjectured that, if $f$ satisfies the necessary local conditions, then $f(p)$ is free of $(d-1)$th powers for infinitely many primes $p$. This is proved here for all $f$ with sufficiently high entropy. The proof serves to demonstrate two innovations: a strong repulsion… ▽ More

The parity problem for reducible cubic forms
Abstract: Let f in Z[x,y] be a reducible homoegeneous polynomial of degree 3. We show that f(x,y) has an even number of prime factors as often as an odd number of prime factors.

On the behaviour of root numbers in families of elliptic curves
Abstract: Let E be a one-parameter family of elliptic curves over Q. We prove that the average root number is zero for a large class of families of elliptic curves of fairly general type. Furthermore, we show that any family E with at least one point of multiplicative reduction over Q(t) has average root number 0, provided that two classical arithmetical conjectures hold for two polynomials constructed ex… ▽ More

Integral points on elliptic curves and 3-torsion in class groups
Abstract: We give new bounds for the number of integral points on elliptic curves. The method may be said to interpolate between approaches via diophantine techniques ([BP], [HBR]) and methods based on quasiorthogonality in the Mordell-Weil lattice ([Sil6], [GS], [He]). We apply our results to break previous bounds on the number of elliptic curves of given conductor and the size of the 3-torsion part of t… ▽ More
