Observation of $D^{0(+)}\to K^0_Sπ^{0(+)}η^\prime$ and improved measurement of $D^0\to K^-π^+η^\prime$

Abstract: By analyzing $2.93\ \rm fb^{-1}$ of data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored hadronic decays $D^0\to K^-π^+η^\prime$, $D^0\to K^0_Sπ^0η^\prime$ and $D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+η^\prime$, which are determined to be $(6.43 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.31_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$,… ▽ More By analyzing $2.93\ \rm fb^{-1}$ of data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored hadronic decays $D^0\to K^-π^+η^\prime$, $D^0\to K^0_Sπ^0η^\prime$ and $D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+η^\prime$, which are determined to be $(6.43 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.31_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$, $(2.52 \pm 0.22_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.15_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$ and $(1.90 \pm 0.17_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.13_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. Measurement of $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η' e^+ e^- $) and search for a dark photon

Abstract: Using a data sample of $(1310.6\pm7.0)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ decay events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we study the electromagnetic Dalitz decay $J/ψ\to η' e^+e^-$ with two dominant $η'$ decay modes, $η' \to γπ^+ π^-$ and $η' \to π^+π^-η$. A search for the dark photon ($γ'$) is performed via $J/ψ\toη' γ', γ' \to e^{+}e^{-}$. Excluding the $ω$ and $φ$ mass regions, no significant signal is observed in the mass range from 0.1 to 2.1 GeV/$c^{2}$. We set upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η' γ')\times\mathcal{B}(γ' \to e^+e^-)$, $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toη' γ'$) and the mixing strength as a function of dark photon mass. Polarization and Entanglement in Baryon-Antibaryon Pair Production in Electron-Positron Annihilation

Abstract: Using a sample of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of spin polarization of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons from the coherent production in the $J/ψ\toΛ\barΛ$ decay. We measure the phase between the hadronic form factors to be $ΔΦ=(42.4\pm0.6\pm0.5)^\circ$. Two approaches are presented. A mass-dependent analysis is performed by parameterizing the $K_{S}K_{S}$ invariant mass spectrum as a sum of Breit-Wigner line shapes. Additionally, a mass-independent analysis is performed to extract a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the $K_{S}K_{S}$ system while making minimal assumptions about the properties and number of poles in the amplitude. The dominant amplitudes in the mass-dependent analysis include the $f_{0}(1710)$, $f_{0}(2200)$, and $f_{2}^\prime(1525)$. The mass-independent results, which are made available as input for further studies, are consistent with those of the mass-dependent analysis and are useful for a systematic study of hadronic interactions. The branching fraction of radiative $J/ψ$ decays to $K_{S}K_{S}$ is measured to be $(8.1 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-4}$, where the uncertainty is systematic and the statistical uncertainty is negligible. △ Less

Evidence of a resonant structure in the $e^+e^-\to π^+D^0D^{*-}$ cross section between 4.05 and 4.60 GeV

Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40~GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for th… ▽ More The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+D^0D^{*-}$ for center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60~GeV is measured precisely using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and 4.40~GeV. Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of $4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the $Y(4220)$ state and the theoretical prediction of a $D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecule. This result is the first observation of $Y(4220)$ associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional $Y(4260)$, $Y(4320)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, or a new resonance, do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from $ψ(4415)$ and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement. △ Less

Measurement of the phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays

Abstract: Using 16 energy points of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the $J/ψ$ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100 pb$^{-1}$, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays. The relative phase between $Jψ$ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process ($e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation wit… ▽ More Using 16 energy points of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the $J/ψ$ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100 pb$^{-1}$, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays. The relative phase between $Jψ$ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process ($e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation without the $J/ψ$ resonance) is confirmed to be zero by studying the cross section lineshape of $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ production. The relative phase between $J/ψ$ strong and electromagnetic decays is then measured to be $(84.9\pm3.6)^\circ$ or $(-84.7\pm3.1)^\circ$ for the $2(π^{+}π^{-})π^{0}$ final state by investigating the interference pattern between the $J/ψ$ decay and the continuum process. This is the first measurement of the relative phase between $J/ψ$ strong and electromagnetic decays into a multihadron final state using the lineshape of the production cross section. We also study the production lineshape of the multihadron final state $ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ with $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$, which provides additional information about the phase between the $J/ψ$ electromagnetic decay amplitude and the continuum process. Additionally, the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to 2(π^{+}π^{-})π^{0}$ is measured to be $(4.73\pm0.44)\%$ or $(4.85\pm0.45)\%$, and the branching fraction of $J/ψ\toηπ^{+}π^{-}$ is measured to be $(3.78\pm0.68)\times10^{-4}$. Both of them are consistent with the world average values. The quoted uncertainties include both statistical and systematic uncertainties, which are mainly caused by the low statistics. △ Less

First measurement of $e^+ e^- \to pK^{0}_{S}\bar{n}K^{-} + c.c.$ above open charm threshold

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the inclusive semileptonic $Λ_c^+$ decay

We obtain $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \rightarrow X e^+ ν_e) = (3.95\pm0.34\pm0.09)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Search for invisible decays of $ω$ and $φ$ with $J/ψ$ data at BESIII

Observation of $h_1(1380)$ in the $J/ψ\to η^{\prime} K\bar K π$ Decay

Abstract: Using $1.31 \times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the first observation of the $h_1(1380)$ in $J/ψ\to η^{\prime} h_1(1380)$ with a significance of more than ten standard deviations. The mass and width of the possible axial-vector strangeonium candidate $h_1(1380)$ are measured to be $M = (1423.2 \pm 2.1 \pm 7.3)\mevcc$ and… ▽ More Using $1.31 \times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the first observation of the $h_1(1380)$ in $J/ψ\to η^{\prime} h_1(1380)$ with a significance of more than ten standard deviations. The mass and width of the possible axial-vector strangeonium candidate $h_1(1380)$ are measured to be $M = (1423.2 \pm 2.1 \pm 7.3)\mevcc$ and $Γ= (90.3 \pm 9.8 \pm 17.5)\mev$. The product branching fractions, assuming no interference, are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η^{\prime}h_1(1380)) \times \mathcal{B}(h_1(1380) \to K^{*}(892)^{+} K^{-} +c.c.) = (1.51 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-4}$ in $η^{\prime}K^+K^-π^0$ mode and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to η^{\prime}h_1(1380)) \times \mathcal{B}(h_1(1380) \to K^{*}(892)\bar K +c.c.) = (2.16 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.29) \times 10^{-4}$ in $η^{\prime}K_S^0K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ mode. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Isospin symmetry violation is observed in the decays $h_1(1380) \to K^{*}(892)^{+} K^{-} +c.c.$ and $h_1(1380) \to K^{*}(892)^{0}\bar K^{0} +c.c.$. Based on the measured $h_1(1380)$ mass, the mixing angle between the states $h_1(1170)$ and $h_1(1380)$ is determined to be $(35.9\pm2.6)^{\circ}$, consistent with theoretical expectations. △ Less

Observation of $ψ(3686) \to η' e^+ e^- $

Abstract: Using a data sample of $448.1 \times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz decay $ψ(3686) \to η' e^+ e^-$, with significances of 7.0$σ$ and 6.3$σ$ when reconstructing the $η'$ meson via its decay modes $η'\toγπ^+ π^-$ and $η'\toπ^+π^-η$ ($η\to γγ$), respectively. Survival of the simplest: the cost of complexity in microbial evolution

Abstract: The evolution of microbial and viral organisms often generates clonal interference, a mode of competition between genetic clades within a population. In this paper, we show that interference strongly constrains the genetic and phenotypic complexity of evolving systems. Our analysis uses biophysically grounded evolutionary models for an organism's quantitative molecular phenotypes, such as fold sta… ▽ More The evolution of microbial and viral organisms often generates clonal interference, a mode of competition between genetic clades within a population. In this paper, we show that interference strongly constrains the genetic and phenotypic complexity of evolving systems. Our analysis uses biophysically grounded evolutionary models for an organism's quantitative molecular phenotypes, such as fold stability and enzymatic activity of genes. We find a generic mode of asexual evolution called phenotypic interference with strong implications for systems biology: it couples the stability and function of individual genes to the population's global speed of evolution. This mode occurs over a wide range of evolutionary parameters appropriate for microbial populations. It generates selection against genome complexity, because the fitness cost of mutations increases faster than linearly with the number of genes. Recombination can generate a distinct mode of sexual evolution that eliminates the superlinear cost. We show that positive selection can drive a transition from asexual to facultative sexual evolution, providing a specific, biophysically grounded scenario for the evolution of sex. In a broader context, our analysis suggests that the systems biology of microbial organisms is strongly intertwined with their mode of evolution. △ Less

The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to n \bar{n}) = (3.06 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \to p \bar{p}) = (3.05 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-4}$. Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. With the hypothesis that the polar angular distributions of the neutron and proton in the center-of-mass system obey $1+α\cos^2θ$, we determine the $α$ parameters to be $α_{n\bar{n}} = 0.68 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.11$ and $α_{p\bar{p}} = 1.03 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$ for $ψ(3686)\to n\bar{n}$ and $ψ(3686)\to p\bar{p}$, respectively. △ Less

The branching fractions of $D^0\to π^-μ^+ν_μ$ and $D^+\to π^0μ^+ν_μ$ are measured to be $(0.272 \pm 0.008_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.006_{\rm syst.})\%$ and $(0.350 \pm 0.011_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.010_{\rm syst.})\%$, respectively, where the former is of much improved precision compared to previous results and the latter is determined for the first time. Using these results along with previous BESIII measurements of $D^{0(+)}\to π^{-(0)}e^+ν_e$, we calculate the branching fraction ratios to be ${\mathcal R}^0\equiv {\mathcal B}_{D^{0}\to π^{-}μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^{0}\to π^{-}e^+ν_e}=0.922\pm 0.030_{\rm stat.}\pm0.022_{\rm syst.}$ and ${\mathcal R}^+\equiv {\mathcal B}_{D^{+}\to π^{0}μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^{+}\to π^{0}e^+ν_e}=0.964\pm 0.037_{\rm stat.}\pm0.026_{\rm syst.}$, which are compatible with the theoretical expectation of lepton flavor universality within $1.7σ$ and $0.5σ$, respectively. We also examine the branching fraction ratios in different four-momentum transfer square regions, and find no significant deviations from the standard model predictions. △ Less

The processes $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c1}$ and… ▽ More Using a data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.600$ GeV, we search for the production of $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c0,1,2}$ and the charmonium-like state $Y(4140)$ in the radiative transition $e^{+}e^{-} \to γY(4140)$ with $Y(4140)$ subsequently decaying into $φJ/ψ$. The processes $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c1}$ and $φχ_{c2}$ are observed for the first time, each with a statistical significance of more than 10σ, and the Born cross sections are measured to be $(4.2^{+1.7}_{-1.0}\pm 0.3)$ pb and $(6.7^{+3.4}_{-1.7}\pm 0.5)$ pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signals are observed for $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c0}$ and $e^{+}e^{-} \to γY(4140)$ and upper limits on the Born cross sections at $90\%$ confidence level are provided at $\sqrt{s}=4.600$ GeV. △ Less

For the forbidden decay of $χ_{c1}\toγγ$, no signal is observed, and an upper limit on the two-photon width is obtained to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c1})<5.3 ~\rm{eV}$ at the 90\% confidence level. The ratio of the two-photon widths between helicity-zero and helicity-two components in the decay $χ_{c2}\toγγ$ is also measured to be $f_{0/2} = Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-2}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. △ Less

Abstract: The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. This is the first observation of the $Y(2175)$ in this process. The mass and width of the $Y(2175)$ are determined to be ($2135\pm 8\pm 9$)~… ▽ More The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. This is the first observation of the $Y(2175)$ in this process. The mass and width of the $Y(2175)$ are determined to be ($2135\pm 8\pm 9$)~MeV/$c^2$ and ($104\pm 24\pm 12$)~MeV, respectively, and the production cross section of $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)\to ηφf_{0}(980)\to ηφπ^+ π^-$ is at a several hundred femtobarn level. No significant signal for the process $e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175)$ is observed and the upper limit on $σ(e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175))/σ(e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175))$ is estimated to be 0.43 at the 90\% confidence level. We also search for $ψ(3686) \to ηY(2175)$. No significant signal is observed, indicating a strong suppression relative to the corresponding $J/ψ$ decay, in violation of the "12\% rule." △ Less

Abstract: By analyzing 482 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=4.009$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the %absolute branching fractions for the semi-leptonic decays $D_{s}^{+}\to φe^{+}ν_{e}$, $φμ^{+}ν_μ$, $ημ^{+}ν_μ$ and $η'μ^{+}ν_μ$ to be ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toφe^{+}ν_{e})=(2.26\pm0.45\pm0.09)$\%,… ▽ More By analyzing 482 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=4.009$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the %absolute branching fractions for the semi-leptonic decays $D_{s}^{+}\to φe^{+}ν_{e}$, $φμ^{+}ν_μ$, $ημ^{+}ν_μ$ and $η'μ^{+}ν_μ$ to be ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toφe^{+}ν_{e})=(2.26\pm0.45\pm0.09)$\%, ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toφμ^{+}ν_μ)=(1.94\pm0.53\pm0.09)$\%, ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toημ^{+}ν_μ)=(2.42\pm0.46\pm0.11)$\% and ${\mathcal B}(D_{s}^{+}\toη'μ^{+} ν_μ) = (1.06\pm0.54\pm0.07)$\%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Determination of the number of $ψ(3686)$ events at BESIII

Abstract: The numbers of $ψ(3686)$ events accumulated by the BESIII detector for the two rounds of data taking during 2009 and 2012 are determined to be $(107.0\pm0.8)\times 10^6$ and $(341.1\pm 2.1)\times 10^6$, respectively, by counting inclusive hadronic events, where the uncertainty is dominated by systematics and the statistical uncertainty is negligible. Study of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $π^+π^-η^\prime$

Abstract: Using the data samples of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events and $4.48\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, partial wave analyses on the decays $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-η^\prime$ are performed with a relativistic covariant tensor amplitude approach. The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching frac… ▽ More Using the data samples of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events and $4.48\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, partial wave analyses on the decays $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-η^\prime$ are performed with a relativistic covariant tensor amplitude approach. The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching fraction ${\cal B}(J/ψ\to ρη^\prime)$ is determined to be $(7.90\pm0.19(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.49(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$. Two solutions are found in the $ψ(3686)$ decay, and the corresponding branching fraction ${\cal B}(ψ(3686)\to ρη^\prime)$ is $(1.02\pm0.11(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.24(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$ for the case of constructive interference, and $(5.69\pm1.28(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.36(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-6}$ for destructive interference. As a consequence, the ratios of branching fractions between $ψ(3686)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to $ρη^\prime$ are calculated to be $(12.9\pm1.4(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.1(\mathrm{sys}))$\% and $(7.2\pm1.6(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.0(\mathrm{sys}))$\%, respectively. We also determine the inclusive branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $π^+π^-η^\prime$ to be $(1.36\pm0.02(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-4}$ and $(1.51\pm0.14(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.23(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$, respectively. △ Less

Search for the rare decay $D^+ \to D^0 e^+ν_e$

Abstract: We search for the rare decay $D^+\to D^0 e^+ν_{e}$, using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 $\rm fb^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage rings. No signals are observed. We set the upper limit on the branching fraction for $D^+\to D^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $1.0\times 10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level. Observation of $χ_{c2}\toη'η'$ and $χ_{c0,2}\toηη'$

Abstract: Using a sample of $447.9\times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009 and 2012, we study the decays $χ_{c0,2}\to$ $η'η'$ and $ηη'$. The decays $χ_{c2}\toη'η'$, $χ_{c0}\toηη'$ and $χ_{c2}\toηη'$ are observed for the first time with statistical significances of $9.6σ$, $13.4σ$ and $7.5σ$, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be… ▽ More Using a sample of $447.9\times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009 and 2012, we study the decays $χ_{c0,2}\to$ $η'η'$ and $ηη'$. The decays $χ_{c2}\toη'η'$, $χ_{c0}\toηη'$ and $χ_{c2}\toηη'$ are observed for the first time with statistical significances of $9.6σ$, $13.4σ$ and $7.5σ$, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toη'η') =(2.19\pm0.03\pm0.14)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2}\toη'η') = (4.76\pm0.56\pm0.38)\times10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toηη') = (8.92\pm0.84\pm0.65)\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2}\toηη') = (2.27\pm0.43\pm0.25)\times10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The precision for the measurement of $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toη'η')$ is significantly improved compared to previous measurements. Based on the measured branching fractions, the role played by the doubly and singly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka disconnected transition amplitudes for $χ_{c0,2}$ decays into pseudoscalar meson pairs can be clarified. △ Less
