Symmetry constraints for the emission angle dependence of Hanbury Brown--Twiss radii
Abstract: We discuss symmetry constraints on the azimuthal oscillations of two-particle correlation (Hanbury Brown--Twiss interferometry) radii for non-central collisions between equal spherical nuclei. We also propose a new method for correcting in a model-independent way the emission angle dependent correlation function for finite event plane resolution and angular binning effects.

Emission angle dependent pion interferometry at RHIC and beyond
Abstract: We use hydrodynamics to generate freeze-out configurations for non-central heavy-ion collisions at present and future collider energies. Such collisions are known to produce strong elliptic flow. The accompanying space-time structure of the source at freeze-out is analyzed using pion interferometry. Between RHIC and LHC energies the source deformation in the transverse plane changes sign. This l… ▽ More

Elliptic Flow from a Transversally Thermalized Fireball
Abstract: The agreement of elliptic flow data at RHIC at central rapidity with the hydrodynamic model has led to the conclusion of very rapid thermalization. This conclusion is based on the intuitive argument that hydrodynamics, which assumes instantaneous local thermalization, produces the largest possible elliptic flow values and that the data seem to saturate this limit. Two RHIC puzzles: Early thermalization and the HBT problem
Abstract: Hadron spectra from the first year RHIC run are shown to be excellently reproduced by hydrodynamic calculations. Shear viscosity of hot scalar field theory in the real-time formalism

Flow effects on the freeze-out phase-space density in heavy ion collisions
Abstract: The strong longitudinal expansion of the reaction zone formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is found to significantly reduce the spatially averaged pion phase-space density, compared to naive estimates based on thermal distributions. This has important implications for data interpretation and leads to larger values for the extracted pion chemical potential at kinetic freeze-out.

Fluctuation probes of quark deconfinement
Abstract: The magnitude of the local fluctuations of the net baryon number and electric charge differs widely between the confined and deconfined phases, and the difference is partially frozen at an early stage in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Is there elliptic flow without transverse flow?
Abstract: Azimuthal anisotropy of final particle distributions was originally introduced as a signature of transverse collective flow. Bose-Einstein Correlations in a Space-Time Approach to e+ e- Annihilation into Hadrons
Abstract: A new treatment of Bose-Einstein correlations is incorporated in a space-time parton-shower model for e+ e- annihilation into hadrons. Two alternative afterburners are discussed, and we use a simple calculable model to demonstrate that they reproduce successfully the size of the hadron emission region. One of the afterburners is used to calculate two-pion correlations in e+ e- -> Z^0 -> hadrons… ▽ More

Strange Messages: Chemical and Thermal Freeze-out in Nuclear Collisions
Abstract: Thermal models are commonly used to interpret heavy-ion data on particle yields and spectra and to extract the conditions of chemical and thermal freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions. I discuss the usefulness and limitations of such thermal model analyses and review the experimental and theoretical evidence for thermalization in nuclear collisions. The crucial role of correlating strangeness produ… ▽ More

Coalescence and flow in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions
Abstract: Using a density matrix approach to describe the process of coalescence, we calculate the coalescence probabilities and invariant momentum spectra for deuterons and antideuterons. We evaluate our expressions with a hydrodynamically motivated parametrization for the source at freeze-out which implements rapid collective expansion of the collision zone formed in heavy ion collisions. We find that t… ▽ More

A Generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem for Nonlinear Response Functions
Abstract: A nonlinear generalization of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT) for the n-point Green functions and the amputated 1PI vertex functions at finite temperature is derived in the framework of the Closed Time Path formalism. We verify that this generalized FDT coincides with known results for n=2 and 3. New explicit relations among the 4-point nonlinear response and correlation (fluctuation)… ▽ More

Bose-Einstein Final State Symmetrization for Event Generators of Heavy Ion Collisions
Abstract: We discuss algorithms which allow to calculate identical two-particle correlations from numerical simulations of relativistic heavy ion collisions. A toy model is used to illustrate their properties.

n-point functions at finite temperature
Abstract: We study $n$-point functions at finite temperature in the closed time path formalism. With the help of two basic column vectors and their dual partners we derive a compact decomposition of the time-ordered $n$-point functions with $2^n$ components in terms of $2^{n-1} -1$ independent retarded/advanced $n$-point functions. This representation greatly simplifies calculations in the real-time forma… ▽ More

Wigner functions in covariant and single-time formulations
Abstract: We will establish the connection between the Lorentz covariant and so-called single-time formulation for the quark Wigner operator. To this end we will discuss the initial value problem for the Wigner operator of a field theory and give a discussion of the gauge-covariant formulation for the Wigner operator including some new results concerning the chiral limit. We discuss the gradient or semi-c… ▽ More

Hanbury Brown - Twiss Interferometry in High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics
Abstract: I review recent applications of two-particle intensity interferometry in high energy physics, concentrating on relativistic heavy ion collisions. By measuring hadronic single-particle spectra and two-particle correlations in hadron-hadron or heavy-ion collisions, the size and dynamical state of the collision fireball at freeze-out can be reconstructed. I discuss the relevant theoretical methods… ▽ More

Multi-boson effects and the normalization of the two-pion correlation function
Abstract: The two-pion correlation function can be defined as a ratio of either the measured momentum distributions or the normalized momentum space probabilities. We show that the first alternative avoids certain ambiguities since then the normalization of the two-pion correlator contains important information on the multiplicity distribution of the event ensemble which is lost in the second alternative.… ▽ More

Fine-Tuning Two-Particle Interferometry II: Opacity Effects
Abstract: We present a model study of single-particle spectra and two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations for opaque sources. We study the transverse mass dependence of the correlation radii R_\perp, R_\parallel and R_0 in the YKP parametrization and find a strong sensitivity of the temporal radius parameter R_0^2 to the source opacity. A simple comparison with the published data from 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb co… ▽ More
