Evaporation Residue Production in Complete and Incomplete Fusion Reactions of Ne-20 with Au-197 and Ho-165 at E = 14.9 x AMeV
Authors:
Fritz Peter Heßberger
Abstract:
Velocity distributions of heavy residues (A_Res > A_Tar), produced in irradiations of Au-197 and Ho-165 with Ne-20 at bombarding energies of E = 208 MeV, have been measured at the velocity filter SHIP. While for the products from Ne-20 + Ho-165 just a mean value of v/v_CN = 0.91+-0.01 was obtained, individual residues, attributed to isotopes of astatine and polonium with mass numbers ranging from…

While for the products from Ne-20 + Ho-165 just a mean value of v/v_CN = 0.91+-0.01 was obtained, individual residues, attributed to isotopes of astatine and polonium with mass numbers ranging from A=195 to A=203 could be identified by means of alpha - spectroscopy in the bombardments Au-197. A linear increase of the mean velocity from v/v_CN = 0.85 to v/v_CN = 0.93 with decreasing residue mass was observed. This effect was attributed to an increasing contribution of pre-equilibrium particle emission to the production of heavy residues. A quantititative estimation resulted in a 90 % contribution of pre-equilibrium processes to the production of astatine isotopes, and a 50 % contribution to the polonium isotopes.

Synthesis of new elements at the upper border of the charts of nuclei and investigation of their decay properties and nuclear structure has been one of the main research topics in low energy nuclear physics since more than five decades. Main items are the quest for the heaviest nuclei that can exist and the verification of the theoretical predicted spherical proton and neutron shells at Z = 114, 120 or 126 and N = 172 or 184. The scope of the present paper is to illustrate some technical and physical aspects in investigation of the heaviest nuclei ('superheavy nuclei') and to critical discuss some selected results, which from a strict scientific point of view are not completely clear so far, making partly also suggestions for alternatively interpretations. A complete review of the whole field of superheavy element research, however, is out of the scope of this paper.

Abstract:
In two recent papers by Pore et al. and Khuyagbaatar et al. discovery of the new isotope Md-244 was reported. The decay data, however, are conflicting. While Pore et al. report two isomeric states decaying by alpha emission with E(1)=8.66(2) MeV, T_1/2=0.4+0.4/-0.1s and E(2)=8.31(2) MeV, T_1/2 approx 6 s, Khuyagbaatar et al. report only a single transition with a broad energy distribution of E=(8.…

The data published by Pore et al. very similar to those published for Md-245 (E=8.64(2), 8.68(2) MeV T_1/2=0.35+0.23/-0.16}$ s ). Therefore, we compare the data presented for Md-244 by Pore et al. with those reported for Md-245 by Ninov et al. and also by Khuyagbaatar et al.. We conclude that the data presented by Pore et al. shall be attributed to Md-245 with small contributions (one event each) from Fm-245 and probably Md-246.

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-48 + Am-243 were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Amongst the detected thirty correlated alpha-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-alpha-fission and five recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events were observed. The latter are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator. Contrary to their interpretation, we propose an alternative view, namely to assign eight of these eleven decay chains of recoil-alpha(-alpha)-fission type to start from the 3n-evaporation channel 115-288. The other three decay chains remain viable candidates for the 2n-evaporation channel 115-289.

Quantum-mechanical shell effects are expected to strongly enhance nuclear binding on an "island of stability" of superheavy elements. The predicted center at proton number $Z=114,120$, or $126$ and neutron number $N=184$ has been substantiated by the recent synthesis of new elements up to $Z=118$. However the location of the center and the extension of the island of stability remain vague. High-precision mass spectrometry allows the direct measurement of nuclear binding energies and thus the determination of the strength of shell effects. Here, we present such measurements for nobelium and lawrencium isotopes, which also pin down the deformed shell gap at $N=152$.

The masses of ten proton-rich nuclides, including the N=Z+1 nuclides 85-Mo and 87-Tc, were measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP. Compared to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003 a systematic shift of the mass surface by up to 1.6 MeV is observed causing significant abundance changes of the ashes of astrophysical X-ray bursts. Surprisingly low alpha-separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc are found, making the formation of a ZrNb cycle in the rp process possible. Such a cycle would impose an upper temperature limit for the synthesis of elements beyond Nb in the rp process.

The masses of very neutron-deficient nuclides close to the astrophysical rp- and nu p-process paths have been determined with the Penning trap facilities JYFLTRAP at JYFL/Jyväskylä and SHIPTRAP at GSI/Darmstadt. Isotopes from yttrium (Z = 39) to palladium (Z = 46) have been produced in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. In total 21 nuclides were studied and almost half of the mass values were experimentally determined for the first time: 88Tc, 90-92Ru, 92-94Rh, and 94,95Pd. For the 95Pdm, (21/2^+) high-spin state, a first direct mass determination was performed. Relative mass uncertainties of typically $δm / m = 5 \times 10^{-8}$ were obtained. The impact of the new mass values has been studied in nu p-process nucleosynthesis calculations. The resulting reaction flow and the final abundances are compared to those obtained with the data of the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003.

Four nuclides ($^{144, 145}$Ho and $^{147, 148}$Tm) were found to be proton-unbound. The implication of the results on the location of the proton drip-line is discussed by analyzing the one-proton separation energies.
