The focus lies on the evolution of the principle eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix in the regime that the number of vertices grows large. The main result is a functional central limit theorem, which displays that the principal eigenvalue essentially inherits the characteristics of the dynamics of the individual edges.

Let $G_n$ be an undirected finite graph on $n\in\mathbb{N}$ vertices labelled by $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$. For $i \in [n]$, let $Δ_{i,n}$ be the friendship bias of vertex $i$, defined as the difference between the average degree of the neighbours of vertex $i$ and the degree of vertex $i$ itself when $i$ is not isolated, and zero when $i$ is isolated. Let $μ_n$ denote the friendship-bias empirical distribution, i.e., the measure that puts mass $\frac{1}{n}$ at each $Δ_{i,n}$, $i \in [n]$. The friendship paradox says that if $G_n$ has no self-loops, then $\int_{\mathbb{R}} xμ_n(\mathrm{d}x) \geq 0$, with equality if and only if in each connected component of $G_n$ all the degrees are the same.
We show that if $(G_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of sparse random graphs that converges to a rooted random tree in the sense of convergence locally in probability, then $μ_n$ converges weakly to a limiting measure $μ$ that is expressible in terms of the law of the rooted random tree. We study $μ$ for four classes of sparse random graphs: the homogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph, the inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph, the configuration model and the preferential attachment model. In particular, we compute the first two moments of $μ$, identify the right tail of $μ$, and argue that $μ([0,\infty))\geq\tfrac{1}{2}$, a property we refer to as friendship-paradox significance.

We identify the critical percolation threshold as $$π_c=\fracδ{2\big(m(m+δ)+\sqrt{m(m-1)(m+δ)(m+1+δ)}\big)}$$ for $δ$ positive and $π_c=0$ for non-positive values of $δ$. Therefore the giant component is robust for $δ\in(-m,0]$, while it is not for $δ>0$.
Our proof for the critical percolation threshold consists of three main steps. First, we show that preferential attachment graphs are large-set expanders, enabling us to verify the conditions outlined by Alimohammadi, Borgs, and Saberi (2023). Within their conditions, the proportion of vertices in the largest connected component in a sequence converges to the survival probability of percolation on the local limit. In particular, the critical percolation threshold for both the graph and its local limit are identical. Second, we identify $1/π_c$ as the spectral radius of the mean offspring operator of the Pólya point tree, the local limit of preferential attachment models. Lastly, we prove that the critical percolation threshold for the Pólya point tree is the inverse of the spectral radius of the mean offspring operator. For positive $δ$, we use sub-martingales to prove sub-criticality and apply spine decomposition theory to demonstrate super-criticality, completing the third step of the proof. For $δ\leq 0$ and any $π>0$ instead, we prove that the percolated Pólya point tree dominates a supercritical branching process, proving that the critical percolation threshold equals $0$.

We analyse the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the configuration model with large degrees, where the latter are treated as hard constraints. In particular, we compute the expectation of the largest eigenvalue for degrees that diverge as the number of vertices $n$ tends to infinity, uniformly on a scale between $1$ and $\sqrt{n}$, and show that a weak law of large numbers holds. We compare with what was derived in our earlier paper "Central limit theorem for the principal eigenvalue and eigenvector of Chung-Lu random graphs" for the Chung-Lu model, which in the regime considered represents the corresponding configuration model with soft constraints, and show that the expectation is shifted down by $1$ asymptotically. This shift is a signature of breaking of ensemble equivalence between the hard and soft (also known as micro-canonical and canonical) versions of the configuration model. The latter result generalizes a previous finding in "A spectral signature of breaking of ensemble equivalence for constrained random graphs" obtained in the case when all degrees are equal.

We characterise the limiting moments in terms of graph homomorphisms and also classify the contributing partitions. We present an analytic way to determine the Stieltjes transform of the limiting measure. The convergence of the empirical distribution function follows from the theory of local weak convergence in many examples but we do not rely on this theory and exploit combinatorial and analytic techniques to derive some interesting properties of the limit. We extend the methods of Khorunzhy et al. (2004) and show that a fixed point equation determines the limiting measure. The limiting measure crucially depends on $λ$ and it is known that in the homogeneous case, if $λ\to\infty$, the measure converges weakly to the semicircular law (Jung and Lee (2018)). We extend this result of interpolating between the sparse and dense regimes to the inhomogeneous setting and show that as $λ\to \infty$, the measure converges weakly to a measure which is known as the operator-valued semicircular law.

We consider Markovian dynamics on a typical realization of the so-called Directed Configuration Model (DCM), that is, a random directed graph with prescribed in- and out-degrees. In this random geometry, we study the meeting time of two random walks on a typical realization of the graph starting at stationarity, the coalescence time for a system of coalescent random walks, and the consensus time of the voter model. Indeed, it is known that the latter three quantities are related to each other when the underlying sequence of graphs satisfies certain mean field conditions. Such conditions can be summarized by requiring a fast mixing time of the random walk and some anti-concentration of its stationary distribution: properties that a typical random directed graph is known to have under natural assumptions on the degree sequence. In this paper we show that, for a typical large graph from the DCM ensemble, the distribution of the meeting time is well-approximated by an exponential random variable and we provide the first-order approximation of its expectation, showing that the latter is linear in the size of the graph, and the preconstant depends on some easy statistics of the degree sequence. As a byproduct, we are able to analyze the effect of the degree sequence in changing the meeting, coalescence and consensus time. Our approach follows the classical idea of converting meeting into hitting times of a proper collapsed chain, which we control by the so-called First Visit Time Lemma.

We consider an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph ensemble with exponentially decaying random disconnection probabilities determined by an i.i.d. field of variables with heavy tails and infinite mean associated to the vertices of the graph. This model was recently investigated in the physics literature in Garuccio et al. (2020) as a scale-invariant random graph within the context of network renormalization. From a mathematical perspective, the model fits in the class of scale-free inhomogeneous random graphs whose asymptotic geometrical features have been recently attracting interest. While for this type of graphs several results are known when the underlying vertex variables have finite mean and variance, here instead we consider the case of one-sided stable variables with necessarily infinite mean. To simplify our analysis, we assume that the variables are sampled from a Pareto distribution with parameter $α\in(0,1)$. We start by characterizing the asymptotic distributions of the typical degrees and some related observables. In particular, we show that the degree of a vertex converges in distribution, after proper scaling, to a mixed Poisson law. We then show that correlations among degrees of different vertices are asymptotically non-vanishing, but at the same time a form of asymptotic tail independence is found when looking at the behavior of the joint Laplace transform around zero. Moreover, we present some findings concerning the asymptotic density of wedges and triangles, show a cross-over for the existence of dust (i.e. disconnected nodes), and identify a strongly connected regime in the ensemble.

We study preferential attachment models where vertices enter the network with i.i.d. random numbers of edges that we call the out-degree. We identify the local limit of such models, substantially extending the work of Berger et al.(2014). The degree distribution of this limiting random graph, which we call the random Pólya point tree, has a surprising size-biasing phenomenon. Many of the existing preferential attachment models can be viewed as special cases of our preferential attachment model with i.i.d. out-degrees. Additionally, our models incorporate negative values of the preferential attachment fitness parameter, which allows us to consider preferential attachment models with infinite-variance degrees. Our proof of local convergence consists of two main steps: a Pólya urn description of our graphs, and an explicit identification of the neighbourhoods in them. We provide a novel and explicit proof to establish a coupling between the preferential attachment model and the Pólya urn graph. Our result proves a density convergence result, for fixed ages of vertices in the local limit.

We consider the two-opinion voter model on a regular random graph with n vertices and degree $d \geq 3$. It is known that consensus is reached on time scale n and that on this time scale the volume of the set of vertices with one opinion evolves as a Fisher-Wright diffusion. We are interested in the evolution of the number of discordant edges (i.e., edges linking vertices with different opinions), which can be thought as the perimeter of the set of vertices with one opinion, and is the key observable capturing how consensus is reached. We show that if initially the two opinions are drawn independently from a Bernoulli distribution with parameter $u \in (0, 1)$, then on time scale 1 the fraction of discordant edges decreases and stabilises to a value that depends on d and u, and is related to the meeting time of two random walks on an infinite tree of degree d starting from two neighbouring vertices. Moreover, we show that on time scale n the fraction of discordant edges moves away from the constant plateau and converges to zero in an exponential fashion. Our proofs exploit the classical dual system of coalescing random walks and use ideas from Cooper et al. (2010) built on the so-called First Visit Time Lemma. We further introduce a novel technique to derive concentration properties from weak-dependence of coalescing random walks on moderate time scales.

The covariance structure of the field is a function of the transfer current matrix and this relates the model to a class of systems (e.g. height-one field of the Abelian sandpile model or pattern fields in dimer models) that have a Gaussian limit due to the rapid decay of the transfer current. Indeed, we prove that the properly rescaled field converges to white noise in an appropriate local Besov-Hölder space. Moreover, under a different rescaling, we determine the $k$-point correlation function and cumulants on $U_ε$ and in the continuum limit as $ε\to 0$. This result is related to the analogue limit for the height-one field of the Abelian sandpile (\citet{durre}), with the same conformally covariant property in $d=2$.

In literature almost all works have considered the field as indexed over $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and this enabled one to study the model using methods from partial differential equations. In this article we would like to investigate the dependence of the membrane model on a different geometry, namely trees. The covariance is expressed via a random walk representation which was first determined by Vanderbei (1984). We exploit this representation on $m$-regular trees and show that the infinite volume limit on the infinite tree exists when $m\ge 3$. The function $f$ is assumed to be non-negative definite, symmetric, bounded and of finite rank $k$. We study the edge of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of such an inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graph under the assumption that $N\varepsilon_N\to \infty$ sufficiently fast. Although the bulk of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix, scaled by $\sqrt{N\varepsilon_N}$, is compactly supported, the $k$-th largest eigenvalue goes to infinity. It turns out that the largest eigenvalue after appropriate scaling and centering converge to a Gaussian law, if the largest eigenvalue of $f$ has multiplicity $1$. If $f$ has $k$ distinct non-zero eigenvalues, then the joint distribution of the $k$ largest eigenvalues converge jointly to a multivariate Gaussian law. The first order behaviour of the eigenvectors is derived as a by-product of the above results. The results complement the homogeneous case derived by Erdős et al.(2013).

While in infinite volume the proof is based on Fourier analytic methods, in finite volume we rely on some discrete PDE techniques involving finite-difference approximation of elliptic boundary value problems.

Abstract:
Inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graphs $\mathbb G_N$ on $N$ vertices in the non-dense regime are considered in this paper. The edge between the pair of vertices $\{i,j\}$ is retained with probability $\varepsilon_N\,f(\frac{i}{N},\frac{j}{N})$, $1 \leq i \neq j \leq N$, independently of other edges, where $f\colon\,[0,1] \times [0,1] \to [0,\infty)$ is a continuous function such that…

Inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi random graphs $\mathbb G_N$ on $N$ vertices in the non-dense regime are considered in this paper. The edge between the pair of vertices $\{i,j\}$ is retained with probability $\varepsilon_N\,f(\frac{i}{N},\frac{j}{N})$, $1 \leq i \neq j \leq N$, independently of other edges, where $f\colon\,[0,1] \times [0,1] \to [0,\infty)$ is a continuous function such that $f(x,y)=f(y,x)$ for all $x,y \in [0,1]$. We study the empirical distribution of both the adjacency matrix $A_N$ and the Laplacian matrix $Δ_N$ associated with $\mathbb G_N$ in the limit as $N \to \infty$ when $\lim_{N\to\infty} \varepsilon_N = 0$ and $\lim_{N\to\infty} N\varepsilon_N = \infty$. In particular, it is shown that the empirical spectral distributions of $A_N$ and $Δ_N$, after appropriate scaling and centering, converge to deterministic limits weakly in probability. For the special case where $f(x,y) = r(x)r(y)$ with $r\colon\,[0,1] \to [0,\infty)$ a continuous function, we give an explicit characterization of the limiting distributions. Furthermore, applications of the results to constrained random graphs, Chung-Lu random graphs and social networks are shown.

Breiman's theorem study the classical product convolution between regularly varying measures. We derive an analogous result to Breiman's theorem in case of multiplicative Boolean convolution. This work deals with the divisible sandpile model when an initial configuration sampled from a heavy-tailed distribution. Extending results of Levine et al. (2015) and Cipriani et al. Random matrices whose entries come from a stationary Gaussian process are studied. The limiting behavior of the eigenvalues as the size of the matrix goes to infinity is the main subject of interest in this work. It is shown that the limiting spectral distribution is determined by the absolutely continuous component of the spectral measure of the stationary process, a phenomenon resembling that in the situation where the entries of the matrix are i.i.d. On the other hand, the discrete component contributes to the limiting behavior of the eigenvalues in a completely different way. Therefore, this helps to define a boundary between short and long range dependence of a stationary Gaussian process in the context of random matrices.

The classical multivariate extreme value theory tries to capture the extremal dependence between the components under a multivariate domain of attraction condition and it requires each of the components to be in the domain of attraction of a univariate extreme value distribution as well. The multivariate extreme value (MEV) model has a rich theory but has some limitations as it fails to capture the dependence structure in presence of asymptotic independence. A different approach to MEV was given by Heffernan and Tawn (2004), where they examined MEV distributions by conditioning on one of the components to be extreme. Here we assume one of the components to be in Frechét or Weibull domain of attraction and study the behavior of the product of the components under this conditional extreme value model.

Let $\{X_t, t \geq 1\}$ be a sequence of identically distributed and pairwise asymptotically independent random variables with regularly varying tails and $\{ Θ_t, t\geq1 \}$ be a sequence of positive random variables independent of the sequence $\{X_t, t \geq 1\}$. We shall discuss the tail probabilities and almost sure convergence of $\xinf=\sum_{t=1}^{\infty}Θ_t X_t^{+}$ (where $X^+=\max\{0,X\}$) and $\max_{1\leq k<\infty} \sum_{t=1}^{k}Θ_t X_t$ and provide some sufficient conditions motivated by Denisov and Zwart (2007) as alternatives to the usual moment conditions. In particular, we illustrate how the conditions on the slowly varying function involved in the tail probability of $X_1$ helps to control the tail behavior of the randomly weighted sums.
Note that, the above results allow us to choose $X_1, X_2,...$ as independent and identically distributed positive random variables. If $X_1$ has regularly varying tail of index $-α$, where $α>0$, and if $\{Θ_t,t\geq1\}$ is a positive sequence of random variables independent of $\{X_t\}$, then it is known, which can also be obtained from the sufficient conditions above, that under some appropriate moment conditions on $\{Θ_t,t\geq1\}$, $\xinf=\sum_{t=1}^{\infty}Θ_t X_t$ converges with probability 1 and has regularly varying tail of index $-α$. Motivated by the converse problems in Jacobsen et al. (2009) we ask the question that, if $\xinf$ has regularly varying tail, then does $X_1$ have regularly varying tail under some appropriate conditions? We obtain appropriate sufficient moment conditions, including nonvanishing Mellin transform of $\sum_{t=1}^\infty Θ_t$ along some vertical line in the complex plane, so that the above is true. We also show that the condition on the Mellin transform cannot be dropped.

In this article, we introduce the notion of free subexponentiality, which extends the notion of subexponentiality in the classical probability setup to the noncommutative probability spaces under freeness. We show that distributions with regularly varying tails belong to the class of free subexponential distributions. This also shows that the partial sums of free random elements having distributions with regularly varying tails are tail equivalent to their maximum in the sense of Ben Arous and Voiculescu [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 2037-2059]. The analysis is based on the asymptotic relationship between the tail of the distribution and the real and the imaginary parts of the remainder terms in Laurent series expansion of Cauchy transform, as well as the relationship between the remainder terms in Laurent series expansions of Cauchy and Voiculescu transforms, when the distribution has regularly varying tails.
