Jet fragmentation and gauge/string duality
Abstract: We consider an analog of e^+e^- annihilation in gauge theories which have a dual string description in asymptotically AdS_5 space and discuss the nature of jet fragmentation. We construct the timelike anomalous dimension which governs the scale dependence of the fragmentation function. In the limit of infinite 't Hooft coupling, the average multiplicity rises linearly with the energy and the inc… ▽ More

Jet evolution in the N=4 SYM plasma at strong coupling
Abstract: Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the time evolution of an energetic R-current propagating through a finite temperature, strongly coupled, N=4 SYM plasma and propose a physical picture for our results. In this picture, the current splits into a pair of massless partons, which then evolve via successive branchings, in such a way that energy is quasi-democratically divid… ▽ More

Deep inelastic scattering off a N=4 SYM plasma at strong coupling
Abstract: By using the AdS/CFT correspondence we study the deep inelastic scattering of an R-current off a N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma at finite temperature and strong coupling. Within the supergravity approximation valid when the number of colors is large, we compute the structure functions by solving Maxwell equations in the space-time geometry of the AdS_5 black three-brane. We find a ra… ▽ More

Deep inelastic scattering at strong coupling from gauge/string duality : the saturation line
Abstract: For gauge theories which admit a dual string description, we analyze deep inelastic scattering at strong 't Hooft coupling and high energy, in the vicinity of the unitarity limit. We discuss the onset of unitarity corrections and determine the saturation line which separates weak scattering from strong scattering in the parameter space of rapidity and photon virtuality. We discover that the appr… ▽ More

Correlation of small-x gluons in impact parameter space
Abstract: In the framework of the QCD dipole model at high energy, we present an analytic evaluation of the dipole pair density in two limits in which the parent dipole is much larger/smaller than the distance between the two child dipoles. Due to conformal symmetry, the two limits give an identical result. The power-law correlation between dipoles explicitly breaks the factorization of target-averaged sc… ▽ More

CGC formalism with two sources
Abstract: In this work we extend the JIMWLK formalism to the two-source problem. The S-matrix for the forward scattering can be written in a double functional integral representation which involves the usual functional integral for the gluon field and the spin path integral for the external color sources. Modifications needed in the light-cone gauge are discussed. Using our source term we compute the prod… ▽ More

Diffusive scaling and the high-energy limit of deep inelastic scattering in QCD at large N_c
Abstract: Within the limits of the large-N_c approximation (with N_c the number of colors), we establish the high-energy behaviour of the diffractive and inclusive cross-sections for deep inelastic scattering at fixed impact parameter. We demonstrate that for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of Q^2, well above the proton average saturation momentum <Q_s^2>, the cross-sections are dom… ▽ More

On the Wess-Zumino term in high energy QCD
Abstract: Recently, Kovner and Lublinsky proposed new small-x QCD evolution equations valid when the gluon density inside the target is low. The key element of their construction is the Wess-Zumino term which ensures the non-commutativity of valence charges. In this paper we clarify the origin and significance of this term by showing that it can be naturally incorporated in the effective theory of Color G… ▽ More

Color dipoles from Bremsstrahlung in QCD evolution at high energy
Abstract: We show that the recently developed Hamiltonian theory for high energy evolution in QCD in the dilute regime and in the presence of Bremsstrahlung is consistent with the color dipole picture in the limit where the number of colors N_c is large. The color dipoles are quark-antiquark pairs which can radiate arbitrarily many soft gluons, and the evolution consists in the splitting of any such a dip… ▽ More

Effective Hamiltonian for QCD evolution at high energy
Abstract: We construct the effective Hamiltonian which governs the renormalization group flow of the gluon distribution with increasing energy and in the leading logarithmic approximation. Relation between the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions
Abstract: Lattice QCD simulations at finite temperature have shown that the chiral phase transition in the chiral limit and the deconfinement phase transition in the quenched limit are continuously connected. I emphasize the nontriviality of this result and propose an unconventional scenario which naturally explains the existing lattice data. The continuity of the two phase transitions is a manifestation… ▽ More

Deconfining Phase Transition as a Matrix Model of Renormalized Polyakov Loops
Abstract: We discuss how to extract renormalized from bare Polyakov loops in SU(N) lattice gauge theories at nonzero temperature in four spacetime dimensions. Single loops in an irreducible representation are multiplicatively renormalized without mixing, through a renormalization constant which depends upon both representation and temperature. The values of renormalized loops in the four lowest representa… ▽ More

On the nature of thermal QCD phase transitions
Abstract: We argue that the chiral phase transition and the deconfinement phase transition in finite temperature QCD are just different limits of a single crossover phase transition driven by the lightest scalar field which is a mixture of the glueball and the sigma meson. The key mechanism, the level repulsion between the sigma and the glueball, gives not only a unified description of the finite temperat… ▽ More

Linking the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions
Abstract: We show that the electric glueball becomes critical at the end-point of the deconfinement phase transition in finite temperature QCD. Based on this observation and existing lattice data, we argue that the chiral phase transition at a zero quark mass and the deconfinement phase transition at an infinite quark mass are continuously connected by the glueball-sigma mixing.

Dilute Nuclear Matter in Chiral Perturbation Theory
Abstract: We use chiral perturbation theory to compute the effective nucleon propagator in an expansion about low density in the chiral limit. We neglect four-nucleon interactions and focus on pion exchange. Evaluating the nucleon self-energy on its mass shell to leading order, we show that the effective nucleon mass increases by a small amount. We discuss the relevance of our results to the structure of… ▽ More

Proton number fluctuation as a signal of the QCD critical end-point
Abstract: We argue that the event-by-event fluctuation of the proton number is a meaningful and promising observable for the purpose of detecting the QCD critical end-point in heavy-ion collision experiments. The proton fluctuation also manifests itself as anomalous enhancement of… ▽ More

The Equation of State for Cold and Dense Strongly Interacting Matter

Purely perturbative Boltzmann equation for hot non-Abelian gauge theories
Abstract: In the perturbation theory, trasnport phenomena in hot non-Abelian gauge theories like QCD are often plagued with infrared singularities or nonperturbative effects. We show, in the context of the Kadanoff & Baym formalism, that there are certain nonequilibrium processes which are free from such difficulties. For these processes, due to an interplay between the macroscopic and microscopic physics… ▽ More
