We have carried out inversions of travel times as measured by Gizon et al. (2020) to infer the internal profile of the solar meridional circulation (MC). A linear inverse problem has been solved by the regularized least-squares method with a constraint that the angular momentum (AM) transport by MC should be equatorward (HK21-type constraint). Our motivation for using this constraint is based on the result by Hotta and Kusano (2021) where the solar equator-fast rotation was reproduced successfully without any manipulation. The inversion result indicates that the MC profile is a double-cell structure if the so-called HK21 regime, in which AM transported by MC sustains the equator-fast rotation, correctly describes the physics inside the solar convective zone. The sum of the squared residuals computed with the inferred double-cell MC profile is comparable to that computed with the single-cell MC profile obtained when we exclude the HK21-type constraint, showing that both profiles can explain the data more or less at the same level. However, we also find that adding the HK21-type constraint degrades the resolution of the averaging kernels. Although it is difficult for us to determine the large-scale morphology of the solar MC at the moment, our attempt highlights the relevance of investigating the solar MC profile from both theoretical and observational perspectives.

Data gloves play a crucial role in study of human gras**, and could provide insights into grasp synergies. Grasp synergies lead to identification of underlying patterns to develop control strategies for hand exoskeletons. This paper presents the design and implementation of a data glove that has been enhanced with instrumentation and fabricated using 3D printing technology. The glove utilizes flexible sensors for the fingers and force sensors integrated into the glove at the fingertips to accurately capture grasp postures and forces. Understanding the kinematics and dynamics of human grasp including reach-to-grasp is undertaken. A comprehensive study involving 10 healthy subjects was conducted. Grasp synergy analysis is carried out to identify underlying patterns for robotic gras**. The t-SNE visualization showcased clusters of grasp postures and forces, unveiling similarities and patterns among different GTs. These findings could serve as a comprehensive guide in design and control of tendon-driven soft hand exoskeletons for rehabilitation applications, enabling the replication of natural hand movements and grasp forces.

Abstract:
We present a QCD analysis of the twist-three parton distribution functions associated with the spin-orbit correlation of quarks and gluons in the nucleon. We derive a novel longitudinal momentum sum rule which may be regarded as the momentum version of the Jaffe-Manohar spin sum rule. The result is also applicable to spinless hadrons and nuclei with trivial modifications.

In our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 182002 (2022)], we introduced a pioneering observable aimed at experimentally detecting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of gluons. Our focus was on the longitudinal double spin asymmetry observed in exclusive dijet production during electron-proton scattering. We demonstrated the sensitivity of the $\cos φ$ angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton as a probe for gluon OAM at small-$x$ and its intricate interplay with gluon helicity. This current work provides a comprehensive exposition, diving further into the aforementioned calculation with added elaboration and in-depth analysis. We reveal that, in addition to the gluon OAM, one also gains access to the spin-orbit correlation of gluons. We supplement our work with a detailed numerical analysis of our observables for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider. In addition to dijet production, we also consider the recently proposed semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering process which potentially offers experimental advantages over dijet measurements. Finally, we investigate quark-channel contributions to these processes and find an unexpected breakdown of collinear factorization.

D104 (2021) 094027], we have computed the perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) involving the $g_T(x)$ distribution. In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs, and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in Drell-Yan proportional to $g_T(x)$ and its gluonic counterpart, and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and Drell-Yan. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to $g_T(x)$ from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large-$x$ (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at sub-percent levels otherwise.

We extend the discussion of the recently discovered 'anomaly poles' in QCD Compton scattering. We perform the complete one-loop calculation of the Compton amplitude using momentum transfer $t$ as the regulator of collinear divergences. In the gluon channel, we confirm the presence of poles $1/t$ in both the real and imaginary parts of the amplitude. In the quark channel, we find unexpected infrared single $1/ε$ and double $1/ε^2$ poles. We then perform the one-loop calculation of the leading-twist quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for quark and gluon external states with the same regulators and find that all these singular terms can be systematically absorbed into the GPDs, showing that QCD factorization is restored to this order. Having established this, we discuss the fate of the $1/t$ poles. We argue that they become the nonperturbative building blocks of GPDs that encode the chiral and trace anomalies of QCD, in a way consistent with the known constraints these anomalies impose on the nucleon axial and gravitational form factors. The scope of research on GPDs can therefore be expanded to address the manifestation and implications of quantum anomalies in high-energy exclusive processes.

To decipher complex patterns of gravity-mode period spacings observed for intermediate-mass main-sequence stars is an important step toward the better understanding of the structure and dynamics in the deep radiative region of the stars. In this study, we apply JWKB approximation to derive a semi-analytical expression of the g-mode period spacing pattern, for which the gradient in the Brunt-Väisälä frequency is taken into account. The formulation includes a term $P^{-1} B_{\star}$, where $P$ and $B_{\star}$ represent the g-mode period and degree of the structural variation, the latter of which especially is related to the steepness of the gradient of the Brunt-Väisälä frequency. Tests with 1-dimensional stellar models show that the semi-analytical expression derived in this study is useful for inferring the degree of the structural variation $B_{\star}$ with accuracy of $\sim 10\,\%$ in the case of relatively massive intermediate-mass models with the mass $M$ larger than $3 \,M_{\odot}$. The newly formulated expression will possibly allow us to put further constraints on, e.g., mixing processes inside intermediate-mass main-sequence g-mode pulsators such as $β$ Cep, SPB, and $γ$ Dor stars that have been principal targets in asteroseismology.

Numerical results are presented for the configurations with $B=1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,32,108$. We find that the $B$-dependence is consistent with a power-law $D(0)\propto B^β$ with $β=1.7\sim 1.8$. This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

In the polarized case, we rederive the pole $1/l^2$ related to the axial (chiral) anomaly. In addition, we obtain the usual logarithmic term and the DIS coefficient function. We interpret the result in terms of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) $\tilde{H}$ and $\tilde{E}$ and discuss the possible violation of QCD factorization for the Compton scattering amplitude. Remarkably, we also find poles in the unpolarized case which are remnants of the trace anomaly. We argue that these poles are cancelled by the would-be massless glueball poles in the GPDs $H$ and $E$ as well as in their moments, the nucleon gravitational form factors $A,B$ and $D$. This mechanism sheds light on the connection between the gravitational form factors and the gluon condensate operator $F^{μν}F_{μν}$.

The D-term is one of the conserved charges of hadrons defined as the forward limit of the gravitational form factor $D(t)$. We calculate the nucleon's D-term in a holographic QCD model in which the nucleon is described as a soliton in five dimensions. We show that the form factor $D(t)$ is saturated by the exchanges of infinitely many $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ glueballs dual to transverse-traceless metric fluctuations on the Wick rotated AdS$_7$ black hole geometry. We refer to this phenomenon as `glueball dominance', in perfect analogy to the vector meson dominance of the electromagnetic form factors. However, the value at vanishing momentum transfer $D(t=0)$ can be interpreted as due to the exchange of pairs of pions and infinitely many vector and axial-vector mesons without any reference to glueballs. We find that the D-term is slightly negative as a result of a cancellation between the isovector and isoscalar meson contributions.

A scheme of Bayesian rotation inversion, which allows us to compute the probability of a model of a stellar rotational profile, is developed. The validation of the scheme with simple rotational profiles and the corresponding sets of artificially generated rotational shifts has been successfully carried out, and we can correctly distinguish the (right) rotational model, prepared beforehand for generating the artificial rotational shifts, with the other (wrong) rotational model. The Bayesian scheme is applied to a gamma Dor-delta Sct type hybrid star, KIC 11145123, leading to a result that the convective core of the star might be rotating much faster (~ 10 times faster) than the other regions of the star. The result is consistent with that previously suggested by Hatta et al. (2019) based on a 3-zone modeling, further strengthening their argument from a Bayesian point of view.

The two-dimensional internal rotation of KIC11145123 has been inferred via asteroseismology. Based on the Optimally Localized Averaging method and a simple three-zone modeling of the internal rotation, we have found evidence for a contrast between the internal rotation of the radiative region and that of the convective core; the radiative region rotates almost uniformly throughout the region, but the convective core may be rotating about 6 times faster than the radiative region above. We have also found a marginally significant evidence of latitudinal differential rotation in the outer envelope. These newly indicated features of the internal rotation of the star can help us further constrain the theory of angular momentum transport inside stars as well as understand the complex physical properties of the star, which was once thought to be a main-sequence A-type star but recently has been proposed to be a blue straggler, based on spectroscopy.

Non-standard modeling of KIC 11145123, a possible blue straggler star, has been asteroseismically carried out based on a scheme to compute stellar models with the chemical compositions in their envelopes arbitrarily modified, mimicking effects of some interactions with other stars through which blue straggler stars are thought to be born. We have constructed a non-standard model of the star with the following parameters: $M=1.36M_{\odot}$, $Y_{\mathrm{init}}=0.26$, $Z_{\mathrm{init}}=0.002$, and $f_{\mathrm{ovs}}=0.027$, where $f_{\mathrm{ovs}}$ is the extent of overshooting described as an exponentially decaying diffusive process. The modification is down to the depth of $r/R\sim0.6$ and the extent $ΔX$, which is a difference in surface hydrogen abundance between the envelope-modified and unmodified models, is $0.06$. The residuals between the model and the observed frequencies are comparable with those for the previous models computed assuming standard single-star evolution, suggesting that it is possible that the star was born with an relatively ordinary initial helium abundance of $\sim0.26$ compared with that of the previous models ($\sim0.30$--$0.40$), then experienced some modification of the chemical compositions, and gained helium in the envelope. Detailed analyses of the non-standard model have implied that the elemental diffusion in the deep radiative region of the star might be much weaker than that assumed in current stellar evolutionary calculations; we need some extra mechanisms inside the star, rendering the star a much more intriguing target to be further investigated.

Motivated by a novel origin of transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) uncovered by some of us, we quantitatively investigate its impact on the theoretical understanding of the mechanism responsible for SSA. This new contribution from the quark-initiated channel first appears in two-loop perturbation theory and involves the $g_T(x)$ distribution. We point out another entirely analogous piece from the gluon-initiated channel proportional to the gluon helicity distribution $ΔG(x)$. Both contributions are solely expressed in terms of twist-two polarized parton distribution functions and twist-two fragmentation functions in the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, such that they can be unambiguously evaluated without introducing free parameters. We make predictions for measurements of the asymmetries $A_{UT}$ at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), and find that $A_{UT}$ associated with the $\sin (φ_h-φ_S)$, $\sin φ_S$ and $\sin (2φ_h-φ_S)$ harmonics can reach up to 1-2\% even at the top EIC energy.

We numerically evaluate the magnitude of these asymmetries for a number of processes in collider experiments, including diffractive dijet and dilepton production in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC and inclusive dijet production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. In particular, the $\cos (2φ)$ asymmetry of perturbative origin can dominate over the primordial asymmetry due to the linearly polarized gluon distribution.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and develo** detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

For dijet production, depending on partonic subprocesses, the probability involves various `color multipoles', i.e., the product of 4 ($qq\to qq$) or 6 ($qg\to qg$) or 8 ($gg\to gg$) Wilson lines. We calculate all these multipoles for a fixed dijet configuration and discuss the factorization of higher multipoles into lower multipoles as well as the validity of the large-$N_c$ approximation.

While both Pomeron and Odderon contribute to helicity-flip processes in general, in the forward limit $t=0$ only the double helicity-flip amplitude $φ_2$, dominated by the spin-dependent Odderon, survives. This may affect the extraction of the $ρ$ parameter as well as the total cross section in the LHC energy domain and beyond.

In the $k_T$ factorization framework, many more sources for SSA exist, and contributions from all possible two-parton transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions are presented up to two loops and twist three.

We compute the gluon Sivers function $f_{1T}^{\perp g}(x,k_\perp)$ of the transversely polarized nucleon at small-$x$ by exploiting the known connection between the dipole gluon Sivers function and the Odderon. We numerically solve the evolution equation for the Odderon both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. While we find that the $x$ and $k_\perp$ dependences of the Sivers function do not factorize as a result of the quantum evolution, factorization breaking is not numerically significant, and is much milder than what one expects in the case of unpolarized TMDs. We also point out the possibility that, due to the presence of a node in the Sivers function, single spin asymmetry for open charm production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering flips signs as the transverse momentum of D-mesons is varied. This can be tested at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Single spin asymmetry in forward $pA$ collisions: Phenomenology at RHIC
Authors:

Abstract:
We confront the theoretical result of single spin asymmetry (SSA) $A_N$ in forward $pA$ collisions $p^\uparrow A \to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect with the recent preliminary experimental data from the PHENIX and STAR collaborations at RHIC. While we find overall reasonable agreement with the STAR data, our results indicate that the strong nuclear suppression of the asymmetry…

While we find overall reasonable agreement with the STAR data, our results indicate that the strong nuclear suppression of the asymmetry $A_N\sim A^{-1/3}$ observed by the PHENIX collaboration cannot be explained within the present understanding of this problem.

Abstract:
We show that, in dimensional reguralization in the minimal subtraction scheme, the QCD trace anomaly can be unambiguously decomposed into two parts coming from the renormalized quark and gluon energy momentum tensors. We carry out this decomposition at the two-loop level. The result can be used to constrain the renormalization group properties of the nucleon's twist-four gravitational form factor…

Holographic $J/ψ$ production near threshold and the proton mass problem
Authors:

Abstract:
It has been suggested that the production of a heavy quarkonium near threshold in electron-proton scattering can shed light on the origin of the proton mass via the QCD trace anomaly. We study the photoproduction of $J/ψ$ off the proton using gauge/string duality and demonstrate that the $t$-dependence of the differential cross section $dσ/dt$ at small-$t$ is a sensitive probe of the trace anomaly…

Abstract:
We show that the diffractive forward production of two quarkonia, especially the $χ_{cJ}$ and $η_c$ states, in proton-proton or proton-ion collisions can access the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon Wigner distribution of the proton. We use the hybrid factorization approach where the collinear, double gluon PDF is applied for one of the protons and the $k_T$-dependent (Wigner or GTMD) distribution for the…

We use the hybrid factorization approach where the collinear, double gluon PDF is applied for one of the protons and the $k_T$-dependent (Wigner or GTMD) distribution for the other. The production of quarkonia is treated in the NRQCD framework. A particularly concise formula is obtained for double $χ_{J=1}$ production.

We suggest inclusive hadron production in ultra-peripheral proton-nucleus collisions (UPCs) $p^\uparrow A \to h AX$ as a new channel to investigate single spin asymmetries (SSAs), in particular, to test the assumed dominance of the contribution from twist-three fragmentation functions. The UPC cross sections are obtained by considering the photoproduction limit of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). In particular, we find simple formulas for the polarized UPC cross sections in the collinear twist-three framework. We then numerically calculate the fragmentation contribution to SSA in $p^\uparrow A \to πA X$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and find a few percent asymmetry in the forward region.
