A method for the generation of ultrarelativistic electron beams with high spin polarization is put forward, where a tightly-focused linearly-polarized ultraintense laser pulse interacts with a nonprepolarized transverse-size-tailored solid target. The radiative spin polarization and angular separation is facilitated by the standing wave formed via the incident and reflected laser pulses at the overdense plasma surface. Strong electron heating caused by transverse instability enhances photon emission in the density spikes injected into the standing wave near the surface. Two groups of electrons with opposite transverse polarization emerge, anti-aligned to the magnetic field, which are angularly separated in the standing wave due to the phase-matched oscillation of the magnetic field and the vector potential. The polarized electrons propelled into the plasma slab, are focused at the exit by the self-generated quasistatic fields. Our particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate the feasibility of highly polarized electrons with a single 10 PW laser beam, e.g. with polarization of 60% and charge of 8 pC selected at energy of 200 MeV within 15 mrad angle and 10% energy spread.

A relativistic analytical theory of strong field ionization applicable across the regimes of the deep-tunneling up to the over-barrier ionization (OTBI) is developed, incorporating the effects of the polarization of the atomic bound state and the Stark-shift in an ultrastrong laser field. The theory, in particular, addresses the order of magnitude discrepancy of the ionization yield in the relativistic regime calculated via the numerical solution of the Klein-Gordon equation [B. Hafizi \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 133201 (2017)] with respect to the state-of-the-art quasiclassical theory of Perelomov-Popov-Terent'ev (PPT) for strong field ionization. The developed theory employs a Keldysh-like approach describing the ionization as an adiabatic quantum jump from the bound state to the continuum at a specific transition time, where the improved performance is achieved by accounting for the bound state distortion in the laser field. In the nonrelativistic limit, our theory reproduces the well-known fit to the numerical calculations for the OTBI rate via the Tong-Lin factor. Realistic conditions for an experimental confirmation of the prediction of the present relativistic model versus PPT-theory are also presented.

The spin polarization of photoelectrons induced by an intense linearly polarized laser field is investigated using numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in companion with our analytic treatment via the spin-resolved strong-field approximation and classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that, even though the total polarization vanishes upon averaging over the photoelectron momentum, momentum-resolved spin polarization is significant, typically exhibiting a vortex structure relative to the laser polarization axis. The polarization arises from the transfer of spin-orbital coupling in the bound state to the spin-correlated quantum orbits in the continuum. The rescattering of photoelectrons at the atomic core plays an important role in forming the polarization vortex structure, while there is no significant effect of the spin-orbit coupling during the continuum dynamics. Furthermore, spin-polarized electron holography is demonstrated, feasible for extracting fine structural information about the atom.

Vacuum polarization (VP) is investigated for the interaction of a polarized $γ$-ray beam of GeV photons with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse. In a conventional setup of a vacuum birefringence measurement, a VP signal is the emerging small circular (linear) polarization of the initially linearly (circularly) polarized probe photons. The pair production via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in such a high-energy environment eliminates part of the $γ$-photons in the outgoing $γ$-beam, increasing the statistical error and decreasing the accuracy of this VP signal. In contrast, we investigate the conversion of the emerging circular polarization of $γ$-photons into longitudinal polarization of the created positrons, considering the latter as the main VP signal. To study the VP effects in the highly nonlinear regime, where the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian method breaks down, we have developed a Monte-Carlo simulation method, incorporating vacuum birefringence and dichroism via the one-loop QED probabilities in the locally constant field approximation. Our Monte Carlo method will enable the study of VP effects in strong fields of arbitrary configuration. With 10~PW laser systems, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the fermionic signal of the VP effect at the 5$σ$ confidence level with a few hours of measurement time.

Built upon the notion of nonspreading for an extended relativistic wavepacket, the concept of Born rigidity for accelerated motion in relativity is the key ingredient of the solution. At its core, the solution comes from the connection between the self-accelerated free electron wave packet and the eigenstate of a Dirac electron in a constant and homogeneous gravitational field via the equivalence principle. The solution is an essential step towards the realization of the laser-driven relativistic collider [Meuren et al. PRL 114, 143201 (2015)], where the large spreading of a common Gaussian wave packet during the excursion in a strong laser field strongly limits the expectable yields.

Generation of ultrarelativistic polarized leptons during interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated domain. While the symmetry of the laser field tends to average the radiative polarization of leptons to zero, we demonstrate the feasibility of sizable radiative polarization through breaking the symmetry of the process in the reflection regime. After the reflection, the off-axis particles escape the tightly focused beam with polarization correlated to the emission angle, while the particles at the beam center are more likely to be captured in the laser field with unmatched polarization and kinetic motion. Meanwhile, polarization along the electric field emerges due to the spin rotation in the transverse plane via precession. In this way, the combined effects of radiative polarization, spin precession and the laser field focusing are sha** the angle-dependent polarization for outgoing leptons. Our spin-resolved Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate an angle-dependent polarization degree up to $\sim20\%$ for both electrons and positrons, with a yield of one pair per seed electron. It provides a new approach for producing polarized high density electron and positron jets at ultraintense laser facilities.

Transient electron dynamics near the interface of counterstreaming plasmas at the onset of a relativistic collisionless shock (RCS) is investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. We identify a slingshot-like injection process induced by the drifting electric field sustained by the flowing focus of backwards-moving electrons, which is distinct from the well-known stochastic acceleration. The flowing focus signifies the plasma kinetic transition from a preturbulent laminar motion to a chaotic turbulence. We find a characteristic correlation between the electron dynamics in the slingshot acceleration and the photon emission features. In particular, the integrated radiation from the RCS exhibits a counterintuitive non-monotonic dependence of the photon polarization degree on the photon energy, which originates from a polarization degradation of relatively high-energy photons emitted by the slingshot-injected electrons. Our results demonstrate the potential of photon polarization as an essential information source in exploring intricate transient dynamics in RCSs with relevance for earth-based plasma and astrophysical scenarios.

Particle-in-cell simulations provide the classification and in-depth analysis of three different regimes of the current filaments, namely, the normal filament, abnormal filament, and quenching regimes. We show that electron radiative polarization emerges during the instability along the azimuthal direction in the momentum space, which significantly varies across the regimes. We put forward an intuitive Hamiltonian model to trace the origin of the electron polarization dynamics. In particular, we discern the role of nonlinear transverse motion of plasma filaments, which induces asymmetry in radiative spin flips, yielding an accumulation of electron polarization. Our results break the conventional perception that quasi-symmetric fields are inefficient for generating radiative spin-polarized beams, suggesting the potential of electron polarization as a source of new information on laboratory and astrophysical plasma instabilities.

The polarization dynamics of electrons including multiple nonlinear Compton scattering during the interaction of a circularly-polarized ultraintense laser pulse with a counterpropagating ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated. While electron polarization emerges mostly due to spin-flips at photon emissions, there is a non-radiative contribution to the polarization which stems from the one-loop QED radiative corrections to the self-energy, which admits of a simple physical model. We put forward a method to single out the non-radiative contribution to the polarization, employing the reflection regime of the interaction when the radiation reaction is significant. The polarization of electrons that penetrate in the forward direction through a colliding laser is shown to be dominated by the loop effect, while the reflected electrons are mostly polarized by spin-flips at photon emissions. We confirm this effect by quantum Monte Carlo simulations considering the helicity transfer from the laser field to the electrons, taking into account the opposite sign of the polarizations induced by the non-radiative loop effect and radiative spin-flip. Our Monte Carlo simulations show a polarization signal as high as $\gtrsim 10\%$ from the non-radiative effect, amenable for experimental detection with current technology.

Tunneling ionization is characterized by a negative time delay, observed asymptotically as a specific shift of the photoelectron momentum distribution, which is caused by the interference of the sub-barrier recolliding and direct ionization paths. In contrast, a \textit{Gedankenexperiment} following the peak of the wavefunction shows a positive tunneling time delay at the tunnel exit, considering only the direct ionization path. In this paper, we investigate the effects of sub-barrier recollisions on the time delay pattern at the tunnel exit. We conclude that the interference of the direct and recolliding trajectories decreases the tunneling time delay at the exit by the value equal to the asymptotic time delay maintaining, however, its sizeable positive value. Finally, we discuss the recent experiment [Light: Science \& Applications 11, 1 (2022)] addressing the tunneling time in a modified two-color attoclock setup. The analysis of the experimental findings with our theoretical model indicates the physical necessity to introduce a new time characteristic for tunneling ionization -- the time delay describing the initiation of the tunneling wave packet.

Vacuum birefringence (VB) is a basic phenomenon predicted in quantum electrodynamics (QED). However, due to the smallness of the signal, conventional magnet-based and extremely intense laser-driven detection methods are still very challenging. This is because in the first case the interaction length is large but the field is limited, and vice versa in the second case. We put forward a method to generate and detect VB in a plasma bubble wakefield, which combines both advantages, providing large fields along large interaction lengths. A polarized $γ$-photon beam is considered to probe the wakefield along a propagation distance of millimeters to centimeters in the plasma bubble. We find via plasma particle-in-cell simulations that the VB signal in terms of Stokes parameters can reach about $ 10^{-5}$ ($10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$) for tens of MeV (GeV) probe photons with moderately intense lasers ($10^{20}$-$10^{21}~\mathrm{W/cm^2}$). The main source of noise from plasma electrons is mitigated, in particular, by a choice of $γ$-photon polarization and by proper modulation of the plasma density. The proposed method represents an attractive alternative for the experimental observation of VB via laser-plasma interaction.

Tunneling ionization of an atom in ultrashort laser pulses is considered. When the driving laser pulse is switched-on and -off with a steep slope, the photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) shows an edge-effect because of the photoelectron diffraction by the time-slit of the pulse. The trivial diffraction pattern of the edge effect consisting of fast oscillations in the PMD disguises in the deep nonadiabatic regime the physically more interesting features in the spectrum which originate from the photoelectron dynamics. We point out the precise conditions how to avoid this scenario experimentally and if unavoidable in theory we put forward an efficient method to remove the edge-effect in the PMD. This allows to highlight the nonadiabatic dynamical features of the PMD, which is indispensable for their further investigation in complex computationally demanding scenarios. The method is firstly demonstrated on a one-dimensional problem, and further applied in three-dimensions for the attoclock. The method is validated by a comparison of analytical results via the strong-field approximation with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

An all-optical method of ultrafast spin rotation is put forward to precisely manipulate the polarization of relativistic charged particle beams of leptons or ions. In particular, laser-driven dense ultrashort beams are manipulated via single-shot interaction with a co-propagating moderate temporally asymmetric (frequency-chirped or subcycle THz) laser pulse. Using semi-classical numerical simulations, we find that in a temporally asymmetrical laser field, the spin rotation of a particle can be determined from the flexibly controllable phase retardation between its spin precession and momentum oscillation. An initial polarization of a proton beam can be rotated to any desired orientation (e.g., from the common transverse to the more useful longitudinal polarization) with extraordinary precision (better than 1\%) in tens of femtoseconds using a feasible frequency-chirped laser pulse. Moreover, the beam qualities, in terms of energy and angular divergence, can be significantly improved in the rotation process. This method has potential applications in various areas involving ultrafast spin manipulation, like laser-plasma, laser-nuclear and high-energy particle physics.

Electron beam longitudinal polarization during the interaction with counterpropagating circularly-polarized ultraintense laser pulses is investigated, while accounting for the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. Although it is known that the helicity transfer from the laser photons to the electron beam is suppressed in linear and nonlinear Compton scattering processes, we show that the helicity transfer nevertheless can happen via an intermediate step of the electron radiative transverse polarization, phase-matched with the driving field, followed up by spin rotation into the longitudinal direction as induced by the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. With spin-resolved QED Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate the consequent helicity transfer from laser photons to the electron beam with a degree up to 10%, along with an electron radial polarization up to 65% after multiple photon emissions in a femtosecond timescale. We put forward a new method, harnessing polarization properties of $γ$-photons emitted from a non-pre-polarized plasma irradiated by a circularly polarized pulse. We show that the angular pattern of $γ$-photon linear polarization is explicitly correlated with the dynamics of the radiating electrons, which provides information on the laser-plasma interaction regime. Furthermore, with the $γ$-photon circular polarization originating from the electron radiative spin-flips, the plasma susceptibility to quantum electrodynamical processes is gauged. The common analysis in the strong field approximation is consequently generalised to include the leading light-front non-dipole Coulomb corrections and demonstrates the counter-intuitive impact of the sub-barrier Coulomb field. Despite its attractive nature, the sub-barrier Coulomb field increases the photoelectron nondipole momentum shift along the laser propagation direction, involving a strong dependence on the laser field. The scaling of the effect with respect to the principal quantum number and angular momentum of the bound state is found. In contrast to Compton scattering sources, the envisaged x-ray source exhibits an extremely narrow relative bandwidth of the order of $10^{-4}$, comparable with an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). The brilliance of the x-rays can be an order of magnitude higher than that of a state-of-the-art Compton source. By tuning the laser intensities and the electron energy, one can realize either a single peak or a comb-like x-ray source of around keV energy. The laser intensity and the electron energy in the suggested setup are rather moderate, rendering this scheme compact and table-top size, as opposed to XFEL and synchrotron infrastructures.

The dynamics and radiation of ultrarelativistic electrons in strong counterpropagating laser beams are investigated. Assuming that the particle energy is the dominant scale in the problem, an approximate solution of classical equations of motion is derived and the characteristic features of the motion are examined. A specific regime is found with comparable strong field quantum parameters of the beams, when the electron trajectory exhibits ultrashort spike-like features, which bears great significance to the corresponding radiation properties. An analytical expression for the spectral distribution of spontaneous radiation is derived in the framework of the Baier-Katkov semiclassical approximation based on the classical trajectory. All the analytical results are further validated by exact numerical calculations. We consider a non-resonant regime of interaction, when the laser frequencies in the electron rest frame are far from each other, avoiding stimulated emission. Special attention is devoted to settings when the description of radiation via the local constant field approximation fails and to corresponding spectral features. Periodic and non-periodic regimes are considered, when lab frequencies of the laser waves are always commensurate. The sensitivity of spectra with respect to the electron beam spread, focusing and finite duration of the laser beams is explored.

Generation of arbitrarily spin-polarized lepton (here refer in particular to electron and positron) beams has been investigated in the single-shot interaction of high-energy polarized $γ$ photons with an ultraintense asymmetric laser pulse via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) pair production. We develop a fully spin-resolved semi-classical Monte Carlo method to describe the pair creation and polarization in the local constant field approximation. In nonlinear BW process the polarization of created pairs is simultaneously determined by the polarization of parent $γ$ photons, the polarization and asymmetry of scattering laser field, due to the spin angular momentum transfer and the asymmetric spin-dependent pair production probabilities, respectively. In considered all-optical method, dense GeV lepton beams with average polarization degree up to about $80\%$ (adjustable between the transverse and longitudinal components) can be obtained with currently achievable laser facilities, which could be used as injectors of the polarized $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Dense high-energy monoenergetic proton beams are vital for wide applications, thus modern laser-plasma-based ion acceleration methods are aiming to obtain high-energy proton beams with energy spread as low as possible. In this work, we put forward a quantum radiative compression method to post-compress a highly accelerated proton beam and convert it to a dense quasi-monoenergetic one. We find that when the relativistic plasma produced by radiation pressure acceleration collides head-on with an ultraintense laser beam, large-amplitude plasma oscillations are excited due to quantum radiation-reaction and the ponderomotive force, which induce compression of the phase space of protons located in its acceleration phase with negative gradient. Our three-dimensional spin-resolved QED particle-in-cell simulations show that hollow-structure proton beams with a peak energy $\sim$ GeV, relative energy spread of few percents and number $N_p\sim10^{10}$ (or $N_p\sim 10^9$ with a $1\%$ energy spread) can be produced in near future laser facilities, which may fulfill the requirements of important applications, such as, for radiography of ultra-thick dense materials, or as injectors of hadron colliders.

Interaction of an ultrastrong short laser pulse with non-prepolarized near-critical density plasma is investigated in an ultrarelativistic regime, with an emphasis on the radiative spin polarization of ejected electrons. Our particle-in-cell simulations show explicit correlations between the angle resolved electron polarization and the structure and properties of the transient quasistatic plasma magnetic field. While the magnitude of the spin signal is the indicator of the magnetic field strength created by the longitudinal electron current, the asymmetry of electron polarization is found to gauge the island-like magnetic distribution which emerges due to the transverse current induced by the laser wave front. Our studies demonstrate that the spin degree of freedom of ejected electrons could potentially serve as an efficient tool to retrieve the features of strong plasma fields.

The problem of time delay in tunneling ionization is revisited. The origin of time delay at the tunnel exit is analysed, underlining the two faces of the concept of the tunnelling time delay: the time delay around the tunnel exit and the asymptotic time delay at a detector. We show that the former time delay, in the sense of a delay in the peak of the wavefunction, exists as a matter of principle and arises due to the sub-barrier interference of the reflected and transmitted components of the tunneling electronic wavepacket. We exemplify this by describing the tunnelling ionization of an electron bound by a short-range potential within the strong field approximation in a "deep tunnelling" regime. If sub-barrier reflections are extracted from this wavefunction, then the time delay of the peak is shown to vanish. Thus, we assert that the disturbance of the tunnelling wavepacket by the reflection from the surface of the barrier causes a time delay in the neighbourhood of the tunnel exit.

Exact solutions of the Dirac equation, a system of four partial differential equations, are rare. The vast majority of them are for highly symmetric stationary systems. Moreover, only a handful of solutions for time dependent dynamics exists. Given the growing number of applications of high energy electron beams interacting with a variety of quantum systems in laser fields, novel methods for finding exact solutions to the Dirac equation are called for. We present a method for building up solutions to the Dirac equation employing a recently introduced approach for the description of spinorial fields and their driving electromagnetic fields in terms of geometric algebras. We illustrate the method by develo** several stationary as well as non-stationary solutions of the Dirac equation with well defined orbital angular momentum along the electron's propagation direction. The first set of solutions describe free electron beams in terms of Bessel functions as well as stationary solutions for both a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The second set of solutions are new and involve a plane electromagnetic wave combined with a generally inhomogeneous longitudinal magnetic field. Moreover, the developed technique allows us to derive general physical properties of the dynamics in such field configurations, as well as provides physical predictions on the self-consistent electromagnetic fields induced by the dynamics.

The problem of Freeman resonances [R. R. Freeman \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{59}, 1092 (1987)] when strong field ionization is enhanced due to the transient population of excited states during the ionization, is revisited. An intuitive model is put forward which explains the mechanism of the intermediate population of excited states during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization via the under-the-barrier recollision and recombination. The theoretical model is based on perturbative strong-field approximation (SFA), where the sub-barrier bound-continuum-bound pathway is described in the second-order SFA, while the further ionization from the excited state by an additional perturbative step. The enhancement of ionization is shown to arise due to the constructive interference of contributions into the excitation amplitudes originating from different laser cycles. The applied model provides an intuitive understanding of the electron dynamics during a Freeman resonance in strong-field ionization, as well as means of enhancing the process and possible applications to related processes.

Several recent attoclock experiments have investigated the fundamental question of a quantum mechanically induced time delay in tunneling ionization via extremely precise photoelectron momentum spectroscopy. The interpretations of those attoclock experimental results were controversially discussed, because the entanglement of the laser and Coulomb field did not allow for theoretical treatments without undisputed approximations. The method of semiclassical propagation matched with the tunneled wavefunction, the quasistatic Wigner theory, the analytical R-matrix theory, the backpropagation method, and the under-the-barrier recollision theory are the leading conceptual approaches put forward to treat this problem, however, with seemingly conflicting conclusions on the existence of a tunneling time delay. To resolve the contradicting conclusions of the different approaches, we consider a very simple tunneling scenario which is not plagued with complications stemming from the Coulomb potential of the atomic core, avoids consequent controversial approximations and, therefore, allows us to unequivocally identify the origin of the tunneling time delay.

Stochasticity effects in the spin (de)polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam during photon emissions in a counterpropoagating ultrastrong focused laser pulse in the quantum radiation reaction regime are investigated. We employ a Monte Carlo method to describe the electron dynamics semiclassically, and photon emissions as well as the electron radiative polarization quantum mechanically. While in the latter the photon emission is inherently stochastic, we were able to identify its imprints in comparison with the new developed semiclassical stochasticity-free method of radiative polarization applicable in the quantum regime. With an initially spin-polarized electron beam, the stochastic spin effects are seen in the dependence of the depolarization degree on the electron scattering angle and the electron final energy (spin stochastic diffusion). With an initially unpolarized electron beam, the spin stochasticity is exhibited in enhancing the known effect of splitting of the electron beam along the propagation direction into two oppositely polarized parts by an elliptically polarized laser pulse. The considered stochasticity effects for the spin are observable with currently achievable laser and electron beam parameters.

It is commonly assumed that in ultrastrong laser fields, when the strong field parameter of the laser field $ξ$ is larger than one, the electron radiation is well described by the local constant field approximation (LCFA). We discuss the failure of this conjecture, considering radiation of an ultrarelativistic electron interacting with strong counterpropagating laser waves. A deviation from LCFA, in particular in the high-frequency domain, is shown to occur even at $ξ\gg 1$ because of the appearance of an additional small time scale in the trajectory. Moreover, we identify a new class of LCFA violation, when the radiation formation length becomes smaller than the one via LCFA. It is characterized by a broad and smooth spectrum rather than an harmonic structure. A similar phenomenon is also demonstrated in the scenario of an electron colliding with an ultrashort laser pulse. The relevance to laser-plasma kinetic simulations is discussed.

We employ a semiclassical Monte Carlo method to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics, photon emissions and polarization, and pair production. Abundant high-energy linearly polarized gamma photons are generated intermediately during this interaction via nonlinear Compton scattering, with an average polarization degree of more than 50%, which further interacting with the laser fields produce electron-positron pairs due to nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. The photon polarization is shown to significantly affect the pair yield by a factor beyond 10%. The considered signature of the photon polarization in the pair's yield can be experimentally identified in a prospective two-stage setup. Moreover, the signature can serve also for the polarimetry of high-energy high-flux gamma photons with a resolution well below 1% with currently achievable laser facilities.

The specific features of nonlinear pair production and radiation processes in an ultratsrong rotating electric field are investigated, taking into account that this field models the antinodes of counterpropagating laser beams. It is shown that a particle in a rotating electric field acquires an effective mass which depends on its momentum absolute value as well as on its direction with respect to the field plane. This phenomenon has an impact on the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler and nonlinear Compton processes. The spectra of the produced pairs in the first case, and the emitted photon in the second case, are shown to bear signatures of the effective mass. In the first case, the threshold for pair production by a $γ$-photon in the presence of this field varies according to the photon propagation direction. In the second case, varying the energy of the incoming electron allows for the measurement of the momentum dependence of the effective mass. Two corresponding experimental setups are suggested.

For the process simulation a Monte Carlo method is developed which employs the electron-spin-resolved probabilities for polarized photon emissions. We show efficient ways for the transfer of the electron polarization to the high-energy photon polarization. In particular, multi-GeV CP (LP) $γ$-rays with polarization of up to about 95\% can be generated by a longitudinally (transversely) spin-polarized electron beam, with a photon flux at a single shot meeting the requirements of recent proposals for the vacuum birefringence measurement in ultrastrong laser fields. In strong-field ionization interferences between electron trajectories create a variety of interference structures in the final momentum distributions. Among them, the interferences between electron pathways that are driven directly to the detector and the ones that rescatter significantly with the parent ion lead to holography-type interference patterns that received great attention in recent years. In this work, we study the influence of the magnetic field component onto the holographic interference pattern, an effect beyond the electric dipole approximation, in experiment and theory. The experimentally observed nondipole signatures are analyzed via quantum trajectory Monte Carlo simulations. We provide explanations for the experimentally demonstrated asymmetry in the holographic interference pattern and its non-uniform photoelectron energy dependence as well as for the variation of the topology of the holography-type interference pattern along the laser field direction. Analytical scaling laws of the interference features are derived, and their direct relation to either the focal volume averaged laser intensities, or to the peak intensities are identified. The latter, in particular, provides a direct access to the peak intensity in the focal volume.

Impacts of spin-polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam head-on colliding with a strong laser pulse on emitted photon spectra and electron dynamics have been investigated in the quantum radiation regime. We simulate photon emissions quantum mechanically and electron dynamics semiclassically via taking spin-resolved radiation probabilities in the local constant field approximation. A small ellipticity of the laser field brings about an asymmetry in angle-resolved photon spectrum, which sensitively relies on the polarization of the electron beam. The asymmetry is particularly significant in high-energy photon spectra, and is employed for the polarization detection of a high-energy electron beam with extraordinary precision, e.g., better than 0.3\% for a few-GeV electron beam at a density of the scale of $10^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$ with currently available strong laser fields. This method demonstrates for the first time a way of single-shot determination of polarization for ultrarelativistic electron beams via nonlinear Compton scattering. A similar method based on the asymmetry in the electron momentum distribution after the interaction due to spin-dependent radiation reaction is proposed as well.

For this purpose the generation of polarized positrons via multiphoton Breit-Wheeler pair production and the associated spin dynamics in single-shot interaction of an ultraintense laser pulse with an ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. A specifically tailored small ellipticity of the laser field is shown to promote splitting of the polarized particles along the minor axis of laser polarization into two oppositely polarized beams. Generation of ultrarelativistic polarized positrons during interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating two-color petawatt laser pulse is investigated theoretically. Our Monte Carlo simulation based on a semi-classical model, incorporates photon emissions and pair productions, using spin-resolved quantum probabilities in the local constant field approximation, and describes the polarization of electrons and positrons for the pair production and photon emission processes, as well as the classical spin precession in-between. The main reason of the polarization is shown to be the spin-asymmetry of the pair production process in strong external fields, combined with the asymmetry of the two-color laser field. Employing a feasible scenario, we show that highly polarized positron beams, with a polarization degree of $ζ\approx 60\%$, can be produced in a femtosecond time scale, with a small angular divergence, $\sim 74$ mrad, and high density $\sim 10^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$. We calculate the photon emissions quantum mechanically and the plasma dynamics semiclassically via two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. An ultrarelativistic plasma generated and driven by an ultraintense laser pulse head-on collides with another strong laser pulse, which decelerates the electrons due to radiation-reaction effect and results in a significant compression of the proton energy spectra because of the charge separation force. In the considered regime the SEs are demonstrated in the shift of the mean energy of the protons up to hundreds of MeV. We develop a Monte-Carlo method to model electron radiative spin effects in arbitrary electromagnetic fields by employing spin-resolved radiation probabilities in the local constant field approximation. Due to spin-dependent radiation reaction, the applied elliptically polarized laser pulse polarizes the initially unpolarized electron beam and splits it along the propagation direction into two oppositely transversely polarized parts with a splitting angle of about tens of milliradians. Thus, a dense electron beam with above 70\% polarization can be generated in tens of femtoseconds. The semi-classical heuristic emission formula of Baier-Katkov [Sov. Phys. JETP \textbf{26}, 854 (1968)] is well-known to describe radiation of an ultrarelativistic electron in strong external fields employing the electron's classical trajectory. To find the limitations of the Baier-Katkov approach, we investigate electron radiation in a strong rotating electric field quantum mechanically using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. Except for an ultrarelativistic velocity, it is shown that an additional condition is required in order to recover the widely used semi-classical result. A violation of this condition leads to two consequences. First, it gives rise to qualitative discrepancy in harmonic spectra between the two approaches. Second, the quantum harmonic spectra are determined not only by the classical trajectory but also by the dispersion relation of the effective photons of the external field.

Dynamics of an electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense focused ultrashort circularly-polarized laser pulse are investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. Generally, the ponderomotive force of the laser fields may deflect the electrons transversely, to form a ring structure on the cross-section of the electron beam. However, we find that when the Lorentz factor of the electron $γ$ is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the invariant laser field parameter $ξ$, the stochastic nature of the photon emission leads to electron aggregation abnormally inwards to the propagation axis of the laser pulse. Consequently, the electron angular distribution after the interaction exhibits a peak structure in the beam propagation direction, which is apparently distinguished from the "ring"-structure of the distribution in the classical regime, and therefore, can be recognized as a proof of the fundamental quantum stochastic nature of radiation. The stochasticity signature is robust with respect to the laser and electron parameters and observable with current experimental techniques.

The impacts of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a long relativistic tightly-focused laser pulse on the dynamics of a counter-propagating electron beam have been investigated in the, so-called, electron reflection regime, requiring the Lorentz factor of the electron $γ$ to be approximately two orders of magnitudes lower than the dimensionless laser field parameter $ξ$. The electrons are reflected at the rising edge of the laser pulse due to the ponderomotive force of the focused laser beam, and an asymmetric electron angular distribution emerges along the laser polarization direction, which sensitively depends on the CEP of the driving laser pulse for weak radiative stochastic effects. The CEP siganatures are observable at laser intensities of the order or larger than $10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ and the pulse duration up to 10 cycles. The CEP detection resolution is proportional to the electron beam density and can achieve approximately $0.1^{\circ}$ at an electron density of about $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$. The method is applicable for currently available ultraintense laser facilities with the laser peak power from tens of terawatt to multi-petawatt region.

Recently, in a strong Coulomb field regime of tunneling ionization an unexpected large enhancement of photoelectron spectra due to the Coulomb field of the atomic core has been identified by numerical solution of time-dependent Schrödinger equation [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{117}, 243003 (2016)] in the upper energy range of the tunnel-ionized direct electrons. We investigate the origin of the enhancement employing a classical theory with Monte Carlo simulations of trajectories, and a quantum theory of Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation based on the generalized eikonal approximation for the continuum electron. Although the quantum effects at recollisions with a small impact parameter yield an overall enhancement of the spectrum relative to the classical prediction, the high energy enhancement itself is shown to have a classical nature and is due to momentum space bunching of photoelectrons released not far from the peak of the laser field. The bunching is caused by a large and nonuniform, with respect to the ionization time, Coulomb momentum transfer at the ionization tunnel exit.

Gamma-ray beams with large angular momentum are a very valuable tool to study astrophysical phenomena in a laboratory. We investigate generation of well-collimated $γ$-ray beams with a very large orbital angular momentum using nonlinear Compton scattering of a strong laser pulse of twisted photons at ultra-relativistic electrons. Angular momentum conservation among absorbed laser photons, quantum radiation and electrons are numerically demonstrated in the quantum radiation dominated regime. We point out that the angular momentum of the absorbed laser photons is not solely transferred to the emitted $γ$-photons, but due to radiation reaction shared between the $γ$-photons and interacting electrons. The efficiency of the angular momentum transfer is optimized with respect to the laser and electron beam parameters. The accompanying process of electron-positron pair production is furthermore shown to enhance the orbital angular momentum gained by the $γ$-ray beam.

The role of the Coulomb potential of the atomic core for creation of caustics in the photoelectron momentum distribution for tunneling ionization in a linearly polarized strong laser field, usually termed as Coulomb focusing, is investigated within classical theory beyond the dipole approximation. Coulomb focusing is addressed by analytical calculation of Coulomb momentum transfer to the tunneled electron due to rescatterings, while applying perturbation theory and classifying the recollisions either as fast or as slow. The accuracy of the obtained analytical formulas for the Coulomb momentum transfer is investigated by analytical derivation of asymptotic photoelectron momentum distribution and its comparison to exact numerical calculations. With the help of the applied analytical treatment, we analyze the origin of the counterintuitive energy-dependent bend of the Coulomb focusing cusp in the photoelectron momentum distribution in a linearly polarized laser field in the non-dipole regime, and its scaling with the field parameters. The importance of high-order recollisions is also investigated and they are shown to be responsible for a decrease of the bend of the cusp at very low energies in this regime. In general, the momentum transfer caused by high-order rescattering events, while being a perturbation with respect to the instantaneous electron momentum at the rescattering, is shown to induce a significant non-perturbative contribution to the total momentum transfer.

The impact of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of an intense multi-cycle laser pulse on the radiation of an electron beam during nonlinear Compton scattering is investigated. An interaction regime of the electron beam counterpropagating to the laser pulse is employed, when pronounced high-energy x-ray double peaks emerge at different angles near the backward direction relative to the initial electron motion. This is achieved in the relativistic interaction domain, with the additional requirements that the electron energy is much lower than that necessary for the electron reflection condition at the laser peak, and the stochasticity effects in the photon emission are weak. The asymmetry parameter of the double peaks in the angular radiation distribution is shown to serve as a sensitive and uniform measure for the CEP of the laser pulse. The method demonstrates unprecedented sensitivity to subtle CEP-effects up to 10-cycle laser pulses and can be applied for the characterization of extremely strong laser pulses in present and near future laser facilities.

A new pathway of strong laser field induced ionization of an atom is identified which is based on recollisions under the tunneling barrier. With an amended strong field approximation, the interference of the direct and the under-the-barrier recolliding quantum orbits are shown to induce a measurable shift of the peak of the photoelectron momentum distribution. The scaling of the momentum shift is derived relating the momentum shift to the tunneling delay time according to the Wigner concept. This allows to extend the Wigner concept for the quasistatic tunneling time delay into the nonadiabatic domain. The obtained corrections to photoelectron momentum distributions are also relevant for state-of-the-art accuracy of strong field photoelectron spectrograms in general.

Strong-field ionization and rescattering beyond the long-wavelength limit of the dipole approximation is studied with elliptically polarized mid-IR pulses. We have measured the full three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions (3D PMDs) with velocity map imaging and tomographic reconstruction. The ellipticity-dependent 3D-PMD measurements revealed an unexpected sharp, thin line-shaped ridge structure in the polarization plane for low momentum photoelectrons. With classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulations and analytical methods we identified the associated ionization dynamics for this sharp ridge to be due to Coulomb focusing of slow recollisions of electrons with a momentum approaching zero. This ridge is another example of the many different ways how the Coulomb field of the parent ion influences the different parts of the momentum space of the ionized electron wave packet. Building on this new understanding of the PMD, we extend our studies on the role played by the magnetic field component of the laser beam when operating beyond the long-wavelength limit of the dipole approximation. In this regime, we find that the PMD exhibits an ellipticity-dependent asymmetry along the beam propagation direction: the peak of the projection of the PMD onto the beam propagation axis is shifted from negative to positive values with increasing ellipticity. This turnover occurs rapidly once the ellipticity exceeds $\sim$0.1. We identify the sharp, thin line-shaped ridge structure in the polarization plane as the origin of the ellipticity-dependent PMD asymmetry in the beam propagation direction. These results yield fundamental insights into strong-field ionization processes, and should increase the precision of the emerging applications relying on this technique, including time-resolved holography and molecular imaging.

Signatures of stochastic effects in the radiation of a relativistic electron beam interacting with a counterpropagating superstrong short focused laser pulse are investigated in a quantum regime when the electron's radiation dominates its dynamics. We consider the electron-laser interaction at near-reflection conditions when pronounced high-energy gamma-ray bursts arise in the backward-emission direction with respect to the initial motion of the electrons. The quantum stochastic nature of the gamma-photon emission is exhibited in the angular distributions of the radiation and explained in an intuitive picture. Although, the visibility of the stochasticity signatures depends on the laser and electron beam parameters, the signatures are of a qualitative nature and robust. The stochasticity, a fundamental quantum property of photon emission, should thus be measurable rather straightforwardly with laser technology available in near future.
