The quantum numbers of these structures are determined with significance of at least $4$ standard deviations. The lightest has mass consistent with, but width much larger than, previous measurements of the claimed $X(4140)$ state.

We construct spectral zeta functions for the Dirac operator on metric graphs. We start with the case of a rose graph, a graph with a single vertex where every edge is a loop. The technique is then developed to cover any finite graph with general energy independent matching conditions at the vertices. The regularized spectral determinant of the Dirac operator is also obtained as the derivative of the zeta function at a special value. In each case the zeta function is formulated using a contour integral method, which extends results obtained for Laplace and Schrodinger operators on graphs.

A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations $N\to pπ^-$, either the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp$ states, previously observed in $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^-$ decays, or the $Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^-$ state, previously reported in $B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^-$ decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

A measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay ${B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}}$ is presented together with a determination of the S-wave fraction of the $K^+π^-$ system in the decay $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$. The analysis is based on $pp$-collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3\,fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb experiment. The measurements are made in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, $q^2$. Precise theoretical predictions for the differential branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays are available for the $q^2$ region $1.1<q^2<6.0\,{\rm GeV}^2/c^4$. In this $q^2$ region, for the $K^+π^-$ invariant mass range $796 < m_{Kπ} < 996\,{\rm MeV}/c^2$, the S-wave fraction of the $K^+π^-$ system in $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays is found to be \begin{equation*}
F_{\rm S} = 0.101\pm0.017({\rm stat})\pm0.009 ({\rm syst}), \end{equation*} and the differential branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays is determined to be \begin{equation*}
{\rm d}\mathcal{B}/{\rm d} q^2 = (0.342_{\,-0.017}^{\,+0.017}({\rm stat})\pm{0.009}({\rm syst})\pm0.023({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-7}c^{4}/{\rm GeV}^{2}. \end{equation*} The differential branching fraction measurements presented are the most precise to date and are found to be in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Correcting the observed charge asymmetry for detection and background effects, the $CP$ asymmetry is found to be $a_{\text{sl}}^s = (0.39 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.20) \% $, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $a_{\text{sl}}^s$ to date. It is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model and will constrain new models of particle physics.

Zircon crystals offer a unique combination of suitability for high-precision radiometric dating and high resistance to alteration. Paleomagnetic experiments on ancient zircons may potentially constrain the earliest geodynamo, which holds broad implications for the early Earth interior and atmosphere. However, the ability of zircons to record accurately the geomagnetic field has not been fully demonstrated. Here we conduct thermal and room temperature alternating field (AF) paleointensity experiments on 767.1 thousand year old (ka) zircons from the Bishop Tuff, California. The rapid emplacement of these zircons in a well-characterized magnetic field provides a high-fidelity test of the zircons intrinsic paleomagnetic recording accuracy. Successful dual heating experiments on nine zircons measured using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope yield a mean paleointensity of 46.2 +/- 18.8 microtesla (1sigma), which agrees closely with high-precision results from Bishop Tuff whole rock (43.0 +/- 3.2 microtesla). High-resolution quantum diamond magnetic map**, electron microscopy, and X-ray tomography indicate that the bulk of the remanent magnetization in Bishop Tuff zircons is carried by Fe oxides associated with apatite inclusions, which would be susceptible to destruction via metamorphism and aqueous alteration in older zircons. As such, while zircons can reliably record the geomagnetic field, robust zircon-derived paleomagnetic results require careful characterization of the ferromagnetic carrier and demonstration of their occurrence in primary inclusions. We further conclude that a combination of quantum diamond magnetometry and high-resolution imaging can provide detailed, direct characterization of the ferromagnetic mineralogy of geological samples.

Stochastic simulation methods can be applied successfully to model exact spatio-temporally resolved reaction-diffusion systems. However, in many cases, these methods can quickly become extremely computationally intensive with increasing particle numbers. An alternative description of many of these systems can be derived in the diffusive limit as a deterministic, continuum system of partial differential equations. Although the numerical solution of such partial differential equations is, in general, much more efficient than the full stochastic simulation, the deterministic continuum description is generally not valid when copy numbers are low and stochastic effects dominate. Therefore, to take advantage of the benefits of both of these types of models, each of which may be appropriate in different parts of a spatial domain, we have developed an algorithm that can be used to couple these two types of model together. This hybrid coupling algorithm uses an overlap region between the two modelling regimes. By coupling fluxes at one end of the interface and using a concentration-matching condition at the other end, we ensure that mass is appropriately transferred between PDE- and compartment-based regimes. Our methodology gives notable reductions in simulation time in comparison with using a fully stochastic model, whilst maintaining the important stochastic features of the system and providing detail in appropriate areas of the domain. We test our hybrid methodology robustly by applying it to several biologically motivated problems including diffusion and morphogen gradient formation. Our analysis shows that the resulting error is small, unbiased and does not grow over time.

The $D$ decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the $D$ decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the $CP$ violation parameters are found to be $x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02$, $x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04$, $y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06$ and $y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values $γ$ = $(71 \pm 20)^\circ$, $r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17$ and $δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ$. The parameters $r_{B^0}$ and $δ_{B^0}$ are the magnitude ratio and strong phase difference between the suppressed and favoured $B^0$ decay amplitudes, and have been measured in a region of $\pm 50$ MeV/$c^2$ around the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ mass and with the magnitude of the cosine of the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ helicity angle larger than 0.4.

A measurement is also made of the mass difference, $m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-}$, and the corresponding $Ω_b^-$ mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{Ω_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.

No periodic variations of the particle-antiparticle mass differences are found, consistent with Lorentz invariance and $ CPT$ symmetry. Results are expressed in terms of the Standard Model Extension parameter $Δa_μ$ with precisions of $ \mathcal{O}(10^{-15})$ and $ \mathcal{O}(10^{-14})$ GeV for the $ B^0$ and $ B^0_s$ systems, respectively. With no assumption on Lorentz (non-)invariance, the $ CPT$-violating parameter $z$ in the $ B^0_s$ system is measured for the first time and found to be $ \mathcal{R}e(z) = -0.022 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.005$ and $ \mathcal{I}m(z) = 0.004 \pm 0.011\pm 0.002$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

We provide new general methods in the calculus of variations for the anisotropic Plateau problem in arbitrary dimension and codimension. A new direct proof of Almgren's 1968 existence result is presented; namely, we produce from a class of competing "surfaces," which span a given bounding set in some ambient space, one with minimal anisotropically weighted area. In particular, rectifiability of a candidate minimizer is proved without the assumption of quasiminimality. Our ambient spaces are a class of Lipschitz neighborhood retracts which includes manifolds with boundary and manifolds with certain singularities. Our competing surfaces are rectifiable sets which satisfy any combination of general homological, cohomological or homotopical spanning conditions. An axiomatic spanning criterion is also provided. Our boundaries are permitted to be arbitrary closed subsets of the ambient space, providing a good setting for surfaces with sliding boundaries.

The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the $B_s^0$ flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ flavour oscillations in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific $B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^-$ decays. The tagging power measured in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays is found to be $(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))$\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ to $D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes $r_{D}^{K3π}$ and the product of the coherence factor $R_{D}^{K3π}$ and a charm mixing parameter $y^{'}_{K3π}$. The constraints measured are $r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}$, which is the most precise determination to date, and $R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}$, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase $γ$ in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm$ decays. The analysis also gives the most precise measurement of the $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ branching fraction, and the first observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in this decay mode, with a significance of 8.2 standard deviations.

The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to $γ$ of existing and future studies of the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay.

Clear filamentary structures are observed at the edge of tokamak plasmas. These filaments are ejected out radially and carry plasma in the far Scrape Off Layer (SOL) region, where they are responsible for producing most of the transport. A study has been performed of the characteristics of the filaments observed in L-mode plasma on MAST, using visible imaging. A comparison has then been made with the observed particle and power profiles obtained at the divertor as a function of the plasma current. The radial velocity and to a lesser extent the radial size of the filaments are found to decrease as the plasma current is increased at constant density and input power. The results obtained in this paper on the dependence of the average filament dynamics on plasma current are consistent with the idea that the filaments are responsible for determining the particle profiles at the divertor.

In future nuclear fusion reactors high heat load events, such as edge-localised modes (ELMs), can potentially damage divertor materials and release impurities into the main plasma, limiting plasma performance. The most difficult to handle are type I ELMs since they carry the largest fraction of energy from the plasma and therefore deposit the largest heat flux at the target and on first wall materials. Knowing the temperature of the ions released from ELM events is important since it determines the potential sputtering they would cause from plasma facing materials. To make measurements of Ti by retarding field energy analyser (RFEA) during type I ELMs a new operational technique has been used to allow faster measurements to be made; this is called the fast swept technique (FST).

An angular analysis of the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine $C\!P$-averaged observables and $C\!P$ asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the $K^{+}π^{-}$ system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of $q^2$, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for $q^2$-dependent decay amplitudes in the region $1.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}$, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of $C\!P$-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, $Δη$, and relative azimuthal angle, $Δφ$, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, $Δφ\approx 0$, is observed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.9$. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to $η=4.9$. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

No significant excess of $D^0 \to e^\pm μ^\mp$ candidates over the expected background is seen, and a limit is set on the branching fraction, $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to e^\pm μ^\mp) < 1.3 \times 10^{-8}$, at 90 % confidence level. This is an order of magnitude lower than the previous limit and it further constrains the parameter space in some leptoquark models and in supersymmetric models with R-parity violation.

Measurements are presented of electroweak boson production using data from $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of $2.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The bosons are identified in the $W\rightarrowμν$ and $Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay channels. The cross-sections are measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$, with transverse momenta $p_{\rm T} > 20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c}$ and, in the case of the $Z$ boson, a dimuon mass within $60 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^{2}}$. The results are \begin{align*} σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν} &= 1093.6 \pm 2.1 \pm 7.2 \pm 10.9 \pm 12.7{\rm \,pb} \, , σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν} &= \phantom{0}818.4 \pm 1.9 \pm 5.0 \pm \phantom{0}7.0 \pm \phantom{0}9.5{\rm \,pb} \, , σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} &= \phantom{00}95.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.7 \pm \phantom{0}1.1 \pm \phantom{0}1.1{\rm \,pb} \, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. The evolution of the $W$ and $Z$ boson cross-sections with centre-of-mass energy is studied using previously reported measurements with $1.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of data at $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. Differential distributions are also presented. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Decay candidates with muon pairs that have an invariant mass in the range 675--875 MeV$/c^2$ are considered. This region is dominated by the $ρ^{0}$ and $ω$ resonances. The branching fraction in this range is measured to be ${\cal B}$($D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$) = $(4.17 \pm 0.12(stat) \pm 0.40(syst))\times10^{-6}$. This is the first observation of the decay $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$. Its branching fraction is consistent with the value expected in the Standard Model.

Production cross-sections are measured for $Υ(1S)D^0$ and $Υ(1S)D^+$ pairs in the forward region. The measured cross-sections and the differential distributions indicate the dominance of double parton scattering as the main production mechanism. This allows a precise measurement of the effective cross-section for double parton scattering.

No $b$ hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be
${f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}$, where $f_{Ξ_b^-}$ and $f_{Λ_b^0}$ are the $b\toΞ_b^-$ and $b\toΛ_b^0$ fragmentation fractions, and ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ is the branching fraction. Assuming $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$ is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)$ would lie in the range from $(0.57\pm0.21)\%$ to $(0.19\pm0.07)\%$.

The decay $B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^-$ is analyzed using $\rm 3~fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the $ψ(2S) π$ mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the $Kπ$ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the $ψ(2S)π$ mass spectrum can be described in terms of $Kπ$ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8$σ$ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the $Z(4430)^-$ exotic state.

The production cross-sections of $D^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D_{s}^{+}$, and $D^{*+}$ mesons are measured in bins of charm meson transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, and rapidity, $y$, and cover the range $0 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 15\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The inclusive cross-sections for the four mesons, including charge conjugation, within the range of $1 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 8\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ are found to be \begin{equation} σ(pp \to D^{0} X) = 2072 \pm 2 \pm 124\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D^{+} X) = 834 \pm 2 \pm \phantom{1}78\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D_{s}^{+} X) = 353 \pm 9 \pm \phantom{1}76\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D^{*+} X) = 784 \pm 4 \pm \phantom{1}87\,μ\mathrm{b} \end{equation} where the uncertainties are due to statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively.

Amplitude models are applied to studies of resonance structure in $D^0\to K^0_S K^- π^+$ and $D^0\to K^0_S K^+ π^-$ decays using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. Relative magnitude and phase information is determined, and coherence factors and related observables are computed for both the whole phase space and a restricted region of $100\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2$ around the $K^{*}(892)^{\pm}$ resonance. Two formulations for the $Kπ$ $S$-wave are used, both of which give a good description of the data. The ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K^0_S K^+ π^-)/\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K^0_S K^- π^+)$ is measured to be $0.655\pm0.004\,(\textrm{stat})\pm0.006\,(\textrm{syst})$ over the full phase space and $0.370\pm0.003\, (\textrm{stat})\pm0.012\,(\textrm{syst})$ in the restricted region. A search for $CP$ violation is performed using the amplitude models and no significant effect is found. Predictions from $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry for $K^{*}(892)K$ amplitudes of different charges are compared with the amplitude model results.

Plateau's problem is not a single conjecture or theorem, but rather an abstract framework, encompassing a number of different problems in several related areas of mathematics. In its most general form, Plateau's problem is to find an element of a given collection \(\cal{C} \) of "surfaces" specified by some boundary constraint, which minimizes, or is a critical point of, a given "area" function \(F:\cal{C}\to \R \). In addition, one should also show that any such element satisfies some sort of regularity, that it be a sufficiently smooth manifold away from a well-behaved singular set. The choices apparent in making this question precise lead to a great many different versions of the problem. Plateau's problem has generated a large number of papers, inspired new fields of mathematics, and given rise to techniques which have proved useful in applications further afield. In this review we discuss a few highlights from the past hundred years, with special attention to papers of Federer, Fleming, Reifenberg and Almgren from the 1960's, and works by several groups, including ourselves, who have made significant progress on different aspects of the problem in recent years. A number of open problems are presented.
