In recent years there has been an increased interest in neural networks, particularly with regard to their ability to approximate partial differential equations. In this regard, research has begun on so-called physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) which incorporate into their loss function the boundary conditions of the functions they are attempting to approximate. In this paper, we investigate the viability of obtaining the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of non-rotating black holes in 4-dimensional space-time using PINNs, and we find that it is achievable using a standard approach that is capable of solving eigenvalue problems (dubbed the eigenvalue solver here). In comparison to the QNMs obtained via more established methods (namely, the continued fraction method and the 6th-order Wentzel, Kramer, Brillouin method) the PINN computations share the same degree of accuracy as these counterparts. In other words, our PINN approximations had percentage deviations as low as $(δω_{_{Re}}, δω_{_{Im}}) = (<0.01\%, <0.01\%)$. In terms of the time taken to compute QNMs to this accuracy, however, the PINN approach falls short, leading to our conclusion that the method is currently not to be recommended when considering overall performance.

Machine learning algorithms are growing increasingly popular in particle physics analyses, where they are used for their ability to solve difficult classification and regression problems. While the tools are very powerful, they may often be under- or mis-utilised. In the following, we investigate the use of gradient boosting techniques as applicable to a generic particle physics problem. We use as an example a Beyond the Standard Model smuon collider analysis which applies to both current and future hadron colliders, and we compare our results to a traditional cut-and-count approach. In particular, we interrogate the use of metrics in imbalanced datasets which are characteristic of high energy physics problems, offering an alternative to the widely used area under the curve (auc) metric through a novel use of the F-score metric. We present an in-depth comparison of feature selection and investigation using a principal component analysis, Shapley values, and feature permutation methods in a way which we hope will be widely applicable to future particle physics analyses. Moreover, we show that a machine learning model can extend the 95% confidence level exclusions obtained in a traditional cut-and-count analysis, while potentially bypassing the need for complicated feature selections. Finally, we discuss the possibility of constructing a general machine learning model which is applicable to probe a two-dimensional mass plane.

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) hold the potential for supplementing the existing set of techniques for solving differential equations that emerge in the study of black hole quasinormal modes. The present research investigated them by studying black hole perturbation equations with known analytical solutions and thus could be framed as inverse problems in PINNs. Our main goal was to test the accuracy of PINNs in computing unknown quasinormal frequencies within the differential equations. The black hole perturbation scenarios that we considered included near extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, and a toy problem resembling them. For these cases, it was shown that PINNs could compute the QNFs with up to 4 digit decimal accuracy for the lowest multipole number, $l$, and lowest mode number, $n$.

In this work we consider spin-3/2 fields in Schwarzschild (A)dS black hole spacetimes. As this spacetime is different from the Ricci-flat cases, it is necessary to modify the covariant derivative to the supercovariant derivative in order to maintain the gauge symmetry, as noted in our earlier works, where this is done here by including terms related to the cosmological constant. Together with the eigenmodes for spin-3/2 fields on an $n$-sphere, we derive the master radial equations, which have effective potentials that in general include an explicitly imaginary part and energy dependence. We found that for the asymptotically AdS cases, the explicit imaginary dependence automatically disappears, because of the negative cosmological constant. We take this case as an example and obtain the quasi-normal modes by using the Horowitz-Hubeny method [6].

The vacuum solution of Einstein's theory of general relativity provides a rotating metric with a ring singularity, which is covered by the inner and outer horizons, and an ergo region. In this paper, we will discuss how ghost-free, quadratic curvature, Infinite Derivative Gravity (IDG) may resolve the ring singularity. In IDG the non-locality of the gravitational interaction can smear out the delta-Dirac source distribution by making the metric potential finite everywhere including at $r=0$. We show that the same feature also holds for a rotating metric. We can resolve the ring singularity such that no horizons are formed in the linear regime by smearing out a delta-source distribution on a ring. We will also show that the Kerr-metric does not solve the full non-linear equations of motion of ghost-free quadratic curvature IDG.

We were also able to determine the quasi-normal modes of the associated gauge invariant variables using the WKB approximation and the asymptotic iteration method (AIM). However, it was found that for higher dimension, and especially for the near extremal cases, the effective potential developed another maximum. The shape of the potential posed difficulties for the WKB approximations, as well as the AIM. As such, in this proceedings we would like to explore the connection between the AIM and the continued fraction method, and determine a possible reason for the difficulty in calculating the quasi-normal modes for spin-3/2 fields in this spacetime.

In this paper we will construct a linearized metric solution for an electrically charged system in a {\it ghost-free} infinite derivative theory of gravity which is valid in the entire region of spacetime. We will show that the gravitational potential for a point-charge with mass $m$ is non-singular, the Kretschmann scalar is finite, and the metric approaches conformal-flatness in the ultraviolet regime where the non-local gravitational interaction becomes important. We will show that the metric potentials are bounded below one as long as two conditions involving the mass and the electric charge are satisfied. Furthermore, we will argue that the cosmic censorship conjecture is not required in this case. Unlike in the case of Reissner-Nordström in general relativity, where $|Q|\leq m/M_p$ has to be always satisfied, in {\it ghost-free} infinite derivative gravity $|Q|>m/M_p$ is also allowed, such as for an electron.

In this paper we consider spin-3/2 fields in a $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. As these spacetimes are not Ricci-flat, it is necessary to modify the covariant derivative to the supercovariant derivative, by including terms related to the background electromagnetic fields, so as to maintain the gauge symmetry. Using this supercovariant derivative we arrive at the corresponding Rarita-Schwinger equation in a charged black hole background. As in our previous works, we exploit the spherically symmetry of the spacetime and use the eigenspinor-vectors on an $N$-sphere to derive the radial equations for both non-transverse-traceless (non-TT) modes and TT modes. We then determine the quasi-normal mode and absorption probabilities of the associated gauge-invariant variables using the WKB approximation and the asymptotic iteration method. We then concentrate on how these quantities change with the charge of the black hole, especially when they reach the extremal limits.

One way of determining this is by looking at the absorption probabilities associated with the black hole. In this proceedings we will look at the absorption probability for spin-3/2 particles near $N$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. We will show how the Unruh method is used to determine these probabilities for low energy particles. We then use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation in order to determine these absorption probabilities for the entire possible energy range.
