Magnetisation and magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out on superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 samples with x=0.40 and 0.50. From low field magnetization data carried out at different temperatures below TC, HC1 has been extracted. The plot of HC1 versus temperature shows an anomalous increase at low temperatures. From high field magnetization hysterisis measurements carried out in fields up to 16 T at 4.2 K and 20 K, the critical current density has been evaluated using the Bean critical state model. The JC determined from the high field data is >104A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 5 T. The superconducting transitions were also measured resistively in increasing applied magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla. From the variation of the TC onset with applied field, dHC2/dT at TC was obtained to be -7.708 T/K and -5.57 T/K in the samples with x=0.40 and 0.50.

We report on the effect of Ni substitution at the Co site on the physical properties of NaxCoO2 system by investigating the series NaxCo1-yNiyO2 (x=0.75, 0<y<0.15). An upturn in the resistivity is observed in all Ni substituted samples as the temperature is lowered, suggestive of the occurrence of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT). The temperature at which this transition occurs increases with Ni content. The temperature dependence of the resistivity in the metallic region in the Ni substituted samples shows a T2 dependence, which is qualitatively different from that observed in the pristine sample. The evolution of the Fano asymmetry parameter, extracted by analyzing the lineshape of the IR active in-plane Co-O mode, both as a function of Ni concentration and temperature corroborates the occurrence of the MIT. It is argued that the progressive substitution of the Co4+ ions with Ni increases the probability of double occupancy and therefore the on-site Coulomb interaction energy leading to a shift in the thermodynamically driven MIT to higher temperatures.

The Raman line corresponding to the E2g phonon mode shows progressive hardening from 620 cm-1 in pristine MgB2 to 775 cm-1 in the sample with carbon fraction x=0.2. The corresponding line width on the other hand, increases from a value of about 220 cm-1 to 286 cm-1 in samples with x = 0.1, beyond which it decreases to a value 167 cm-1 for x=0.2. From the average mode frequency and the line width obtained from Raman measurements and taking the values of N(0) obtained from the calculated variation in s hole density of states in MgB2-xCx, the electron phonon coupling strength to the E2g phonon, l2g, is evaluated using Allen’s formula. This remains large for low C fraction, but shows rapid decrease for x > 0.10. Using this value of l2g appropriately weighted, TC is obtained from McMillan’s equation. These values are in good agreement with the experimentally measured TC variation in MgB2-xCx.

Coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is observed in all the Cu doped samples studied here. The zero field susceptibility data suggests formation of a spontaneous vortex phase. Cu do** decreases the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, whereas the superconducting transition temperature increases until an optimal concentration x~0.1. This reflects an increase in hole transfer to the CuO2 planes and reduction of ferromagnetic order within the ruthenate layers.

The superconducting transition temperature, T$_{C}$, the residual resistivity $ρ_{0}$ and the slope of resistivity curve at high temperature, d$ρ$/dT, have been measured in a series of MgB$_{2}$ samples that have been chemically substituted to varying degree with Li or Cu at the Mg-site and by Li or Cu at the Mg-site along with C substitution at the B-site. DC resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements were employed to extract the above parameters. T$_{C}$ versus the electron count (estimated from simple chemical valence count arguments) shows a universal behaviour, with T$_{C}$ being constant at the MgB$_{2}$ value for electron counts lower than in MgB$_{2}$ but rapidly decreasing for larger electron counts. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch- Gruneisen formula, from which the Debye temperature, $θ_{D}$, and the $ρ_{0}$ are extracted. $θ_{D}$ variation with T$_{C}$ is not systematic, whereas $ρ_{0}$ versus T$_{C}$ shows a systematic variation that depends on the type of the chemical substituent. This dependence has a signature of the nature of the intraband/interband scattering affected by the chemical substitutions. d$ρ$/dT increases with C substitution, but decreases with Li and Cu substitution, implying that C substitution leads to the domination of conductivity by the $σ$ band, while in the Li/Cu substituted samples the $π$ band dominates conduction.

Do** with Dy gives no significant structural changes except for a minor change in the c/a ratio. However the superconducting transition temperature is significantly suppressed and magnetic ordering temperature enhanced on Dy do**. These effects are described and discussed.

Our synthesis procedure, following the recipe for MgB2, involves reaction of elemental components in a Ta crucible at 900o C under 50 bar of argon pressure. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate the formation of P63/mmc structure up to x=0.6. However, no diamagnetic signal or zero resistance, corresponding to the superconducting transition, was observed in the temperature range of 300 to 4 K. This is possibly related to the presence of disorder in the B-C stacking; evidence for which is suggested from a study of the vibrational modes of LixBC through infrared spectroscopy.

Results of our study on the superconducting and normal state properties of the recently discovered superconductor MgCNi_3, the effect of Fe and Co substitution at the Ni site and the effect of pressure are reported. It is shown that a two band model provides a consistent interpretation of the temperature dependence of the normal state resistance and the Hall constant. Whereas band structure calculations suggest an increase in T_c upon partial substitution of Ni with Fe and Co, Co substitution quenches superconductivity and Fe substitution leads to an increase followed by a decrease in T_c. The observed variation of T_c may be explained in terms of a competition between increase in T_c due to increase in density of states and a decrease due to spin fluctuations. Based on these results, it is suggested that the spin fluctuations are weaker in Fe doped samples as compared to the Co doped ones. An initial decrease in T_c (and the normal state resistance) followed by an increase is observed on application of pressure. The decrease in T_c for small applied pressures can be understood in terms of the decrease in the density of states at the Fermi level. The subsequent increase in T_c with pressure is due to a lattice softening or a structural phase transition, consistent with the band structure calculations. It is conjectured that suppression of spin fluctuations by pressure may also be responsible for the observed increase in T_c at higher pressures.

Successful replacement of B by C in the series MgB2-xCx for values of x upto 0.3 are reported. Resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements have been carried out in the samples. Solubility of carbon, inferred from the observed change in the lattice parameter with carbon content indicates that carbon substitutes upto x=0.30 into the MgB2 lattice. The superconducting transition temperature, TC measured both by zero resistivity and the onset of the diamagnetic signal shows a systematic decrease with increase in carbon content upto x=0.30, beyond which the volume fraction decreases drastically. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch-Gruneisen formula for all the carbon compositions studied. The Debye temperatures, extracted from the fit is seen to decrease with carbon content from 900K to 525K, whereas the electron-phonon interaction parameter, obtained from the McMillan equation using the measured TC and the Debye temperature, is seen to increase monotonically from 0.8 in MgB2 to 0.9 in the x=0.50 sample. The ratio of the resistivities between 300K and 40K versus TC is seen to follow the Testardi correlation for the C substituted samples. The decrease in TC is argued to mainly arise due to large decrease in the Debye temperature with C concentration and a decrease in the hole density of states at N(EF).

The absorption spectrum is characterised by a broad band centred at 485 cm^{-1}, with shoulders at 333 and 387 cm^{-1}. Studies on the temperature dependence of absorption, indicate that these modes initially harden with the lowering of temperature, and this trend is arrested at ~ 100 K, below which they soften. Further, in the case of the mode at 333 cm^{-1}, there is a distinct softening associated with the superconducting transition at 39 K. The implications of these experimental results in the context of superconductivity in MgB2 are discussed.

After releasing the pressure from 31.1 GPa, the Raman and the photoluminescence spectra of the recovered sample are that of the starting $C_{70}$ crystal. These results indicate that the $C_{70}$ molecules are stable upto 31.1 GPa and the amorphous carbon high pressure phase is reversible, in sharp contrast to the results on solid $C_{60}$. A qualitative explaination is suggested in terms of inter- versus intra-molecular interactions.
