From its conception, 6G is being designed with a particular focus on sustainability. The general philosophy of the H2020 Hexa-X project work on sustainability in 6G is based on two principles: to reduce direct negative life cycle impacts of 6G systems as much as possible (Sustainable 6G) and to analyze use cases that maximize positive environmental, social, and economic effects in other sectors of society (6G for Sustainability or its enablement effect). To apply this philosophy, Hexa-X is designing 6G with three sustainability objectives in mind: to enable the reduction of emissions in 6G-powered sectors of society, to reduce the total cost of ownership and to improve energy efficiency. This paper describes these objectives, their associated KPIs and quantitative targets, and the levers to reach them. Furthermore, to maximize the positive effects of 6G through the enablement effect, a link between 6G and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) framework is proposed and illustrated by Hexa-X use case families.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute the key enabler for programmable electromagnetic propagation environments, and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localization, and sustainability requirements of next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we first present the deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed within the ongoing European Union Horizon 2020 RISE-6G project, as well as a network architecture integrating RISs with existing standardized interfaces. We identify various RIS deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signaling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, with the aid of simulations and reflectarray measurements, two novel metrics that emerge in the context of RIS-empowered wireless systems: the RIS bandwidth and area of influence. Their extensive investigation corroborates the need for careful deployment and planning of the RIS technology in future networks.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute the enabler for programmable propagation of electromagnetic signals, and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localization, and sustainability requirements of next generation wireless communications networks. In this paper, we present various deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed by the ongoing EU H2020 RISE-6G project. The scenarios are taxonomized according to performance objectives, in particular, connectivity and reliability, localization and sensing, as well as sustainability and secrecy. We identify various deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signaling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and their respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, via preliminary simulation results and reflectarray measurements, two key novel challenges with RIS-enabled smart wireless environments, namely, the area of influence and the bandwidth of influence of RISs, which corroborate the need for careful deployment and planning of this new technology.

This paper provides techno-economic analyses on the network deployments to cover 4 key verticals, under 5G-NR. These verticals, namely Automotive, Smart city, Long range connectivity and Disaster and emergency support, were chosen to reflect the ONE5G project objective of investigating environments from densely populated cities (''Megacity'') to large underserved areas. The work presented covers the network deployment framework including common centralization strategies and the main cost factors. Initial results presented for long range connectivity and emergency support networks provide the cost trade-offs in different deployment options and cost sensitivity to some of the parameters.

Lucid dreaming (LD) is a phenomenon during which the person is aware that he/she dreaming and is able to control the dream content. Studies have shown that only 20% of people can experience lucid dreams on a regular basis. However, LD frequency can be increased through induction techniques. External stimulation technique relies on the ability to integrate external information into the dream content. The aim is to remind the sleeper that she/he is dreaming. If this type of protocol is not fully efficient, it demonstrates how sensorial stimuli can be easily incorporated into people's dreams. The objective of our project was to replicate this induction technique using material less expensive and more portable. This material could simplify experimental procedures. Participants could bring the material home, then have a more ecological setting. First, we used the OpenBCI Cyton, a low-cost EEG signal acquisition board in order to record and manually live-score sleep. Then, we designed a mask containing two LEDs, connected to a microcontroller to flash visual stimulation during sleep. We asked two volunteers to sleep for 2 hours in a dedicated room. One of the participants declared having a dream during which the blue lights diffused by the mask were embedded into the dream environment. The other participant woke up during the visual stimulation. These results are congruent with previous studies. This work marked the first step of a larger project. Our ongoing research includes the use of an online sleep stage scoring tool and the possibility to automatically send stimuli according to the sleep stage. We will also investigate other types of stimulus induction in the future such as vibro-tactile stimulation that showed great potentials.

Anxiety is a common health issue that can occur throughout one's existence. In this pilot study we explore an alternative technique to regulate it: biofeedback. The long-term objective is to offer an ecological device that could help people cope with anxiety, by exposing their inner state in a comprehensive manner. We propose a first iteration of this device, "Inner Flower", that uses heart rate to adapt a breathing guide to the user, and we investigate its efficiency and usability. Traditionally, such device requires user's full attention. We propose an ambient modality during which the device operates in the peripheral vision. Beside comparing "Ambient" and "Focus" conditions, we also compare the biofeedback with a sham feedback (fixed breathing guide). We found that the Focus group demonstrated higher relaxation and performance on a cognitive task (N-back). However, there was no noticeable effect of the Ambient feedback, and the biofeedback condition did not yield any significant difference when compared to the sham feedback. These results, while promising, highlight the pitfalls of any research related to biofeedback, where it is difficult to fully comprehend the underlying mechanisms of such technique.
